Quest to Become a Hero

[X] Tell her that you think it's because you had a dream about another person's life last night, and it somehow imprinted some of their skill onto you. You're just speculating though, and you're not sure how it happened, it's all very confusing. (Make no mention of Heroic Spirits.)

If you want a doctor to help you, then don't lie to her. (I mean, we didn't really dream about another person's life, or am I missing something?)

Edit: I was wrong; we did dream about another person's life. Changed my vote.

Nah, we did. We dreamt of an old scribe dude who got punished to transcribing stuff for eternity, and experienced all of that. Our body and soul wasn't meant to withstand that at this point however, so we got some kinda super-arthritis.

That's what I remember, anyway. Lemme see if i can quote it.

Here it is!
A life sentence they called it, a punishment for crimes against the Imperial Family for daring to spread the truth of knowledge to the masses.

"What kind of punishment is it to offer a student of Knowledge a chance to spend the remainder of his life browsing and copying the personal library of the Emperor Himself? Bwhahaha, truly I've lucked out this time. No one to bother me and all the knowledge of the world to view! Such idiots."

With that you turn to the table laden with books, just a few for now but their value is truly incalculable for every one is an ancient record of the Imperial Library. Blank pages, ink, sand, and a quill rest next to them for it is all you would ever need to copy these aging masterpieces. Hesitation and excitement fill you as you sit down to work, a hand shakily preparing the quill while the other readies the pages for your work...

From there it all becomes a blur. Time passes, days or weeks or even years perhaps? You can't tell for all that is clear to you is the man's actions, no... your actions? Whatever lies on the books is a blur to you, but every action of those hands and arms is clear as they copy page after page. Book after book. Wrinkles form, tanned skin turning pale as the blurred contents are poured out onto new pages under the increasingly skilled hand.

By the time you can no longer move it, for all that you feel from your own two hands is crippling pain, you know that you have achieved something few before ever have. Sure, it was simply copying but you had honed it into an art-form. Perhaps it is okay to pass away with having achieved this?

"Yes, yes. This is good enough. I can sleep in peace knowing this..."

With that your frail form clambers onto a straw mat next to the desk, warmth leaving your body with every movement as the world starts to fade. Colors bleed away turning the world black and white, your body quickly refuses to respond, and yet you are satisfied...

Tells the Guild that no, we aren't keeping some kinda soul-destroying monster hidden or whatever so they can't jail us, and doesn't hint at our Heroic Spirit nature. Because the first thing they're probably gonna think is that we were trying to tame something we shouldn't have been, considering how our hands and soul are damaged and we don't want to tell why. Better to tell a little of the truth and try to allay suspicions than lie and have the guild start hounding us for maybe bringing in some kinda soul eating creature.
Yeah, while telling anything about the dream reveals there's something going on with the MC, saying that we don't know what happened encourages the guild to figure out what happened themselves. After all, the soul wound had to come from somewhere, and they need to make sure that no one else is in danger.

I'm hoping that the dream itself isn't too unusual. Maybe they'll think that the MC is dreaming of his past life?

Events so Far
It's a little rough, but here's a recap since it's been so long. It's just a rough outline of major points, I probably skipped some details somewhere.

Our protagonist is John Stitch, a scholar who spent much of his life studying in Relgar's Academy, but he has always had a dream to become a Hero of which the legends speak. Leaving behind the Academy, he joined the Adventurer's Guild in Relgar and obtained the entry rank of Porcelain Adventurer.

As his first quest he took up a request to copy some aging records of the Temple of War's archive, but strangely upon heading to the Temple he was stopped outside by the statue of the War God himself seemingly come to life. Time had frozen for all, but John and the God before him. He seemed to call him a Heroic Spirit, remarking on the oddity of your original path before offering two choices: the Crown or the Sword. Of the two choices offered John chose the Crown, a boon that left a mark upon his brow unseen by others and a strange power to dominate the free will of other beings.

Even such a simple task as copying old records couldn't go simply apparently for in the process John discovered a journal which spoke of a long dead clergyman's interactions with the founder of the Relgar Township. According to it, Relgar was capable of tilling miles of land with a single strike from a hoe and when the founder noticed the priest's shock at the sight he left behind one sentence. 'For those who follow a path to the end even the most mundane things can turn into miraculous abilities.'

Afterwards he found a scroll bearing the seal of the Cult of the Burning Sword, the order of knights entrusted with enforcing the laws of the Temple of War and guardians of the Bastion Mountains. Worried of persecution and the potential that it might fall into the hands of an innocent people he stole the scroll, as a Hero rightfully should.

During his second request working for the Guild, John assisted with bookkeeping at an inn and managed to uncover acts of embezzlement and leaves it to the owner to handle. During his work there John established his own Code of Ethics as a Scholar, even a mere student of knowledge should have rules to abide by.

Sometime after John entered into a dream realm, a black void with nothing in it aside from a multicolored flame constantly circled by a faint, golden crown. It was there that he learned he was the Vessel for the Heroic Spirit, a strange entity that apparently appeared in every era in it's time of need and set it's "Vessel" on a path to greatness. It seemed to state that the "Vessel" was required to continually pursue the path of a Hero, but in return they would be granted strength for their achievements.

The Heroic Spirit's rules were:

  1. A Heroic Spirit's vessel must forever strive towards greater heights, a Hero is never created from nothing.
  2. If a Vessel achieves something of note, an act that would contribute to their legend, then the Spirit will grant them a chance for power.
  3. When a Vessel obtains a new level the Spirit will reward them with yet more potential power.
  4. A Vessel must never willingly reveal it's existence as one.
  5. A Vessel must hold no attachment to life, even death can forge a legacy.
The offered "chance for power" came in the form of Heroic Legacy Points, which he had earned by earning the blessing of the Crown from the War God, reaching Level 2, and establishing a Code of Honor unique to himself.

After that dream he took on a request to gather some medicinal plants and ended up dominating his first follower: A common Vicious Rabbit that had attempted to accost him on the road. It would later turn out that when it comes to training in effective methods of evasion, a rabbit can beat a scholar with ease.

Sometime after John was once more drawn into that strange dream realm only to be ripped away into yet another realm, a great hall adorned in countless murals depicting scholars, battles, herbalists, and far more. Within that temple he encountered a Flame far beyond the scale of that which he saw in his dreams, it spoke and declared itself the Origin of Heroic Spirits, and Arbitrator of .... something? It pressed John to progress faster, claiming it had brought him there to instill a greater drive to build his Legacy.

It was in that same Temple that he discovered five pedestals, and seven statues that towered above the temple hall. Of the pedestals one seemed to represent himself, a plain book with merely a page and half of writing resting upon it. Writing that encompassed all of his existence, equal to nothing more than a mere page and a half.

Following a conversation with the Origin of Heroic Spirits, John is offered a chance to examine the things within the temple. Among them he chose to view the murals which led to his experiencing the later stage of an unknown man's life, the years spent doing nothing aside from copying the records of an Imperial Family's library. When he awoke he found his hands torn beyond recognition, and blood dripping from his nose. Supposedly a result of an injury to the soul.

...In other words, we swiped the scroll but we've done very little that's cool or fitting of a hero since, barely seeking out glory or opportunities to forge a legacy.
Hrrm.
...I have a thought but it'll half to wait a bit, possibly much longer depending on how severe that damage to our hands is, but here's the thought:
Dominate Writing seems born of the intersection between our mastery of literacy and the Domination power in general. But while we can use it to absorb knowledge for our own purposes...What about using it to craft writings that impart our skills to others? Like say, when we arrive at our next job, depending on our workload, grabbing some orphan and making him an 'apprentice' via a Dominated Writing born of our own knowledge of literacy?
Admittedly, such an act might violate the principle of 'No work is better than hasty work' if only due to the limited time period such a 'student' of ours would have to operate...But it's something to try that beats trying to learn how to beat things up. That's what Rabbit's job will be!...Eventually.

Omission isn't Lying, Right?
[X] Tell her that you think it's because you had a dream about another person's life last night, and it somehow imprinted some of their skill onto you. You're just speculating though, and you're not sure how it happened, it's all very confusing. (Make no mention of Heroic Spirits.)

You take a while contemplating an answer, the unnerving shining eyes of your doctor turned interrogator boring into you all the while. As a scholar lies are not an unknown to you, no small amount of self proclaimed geniuses, historians, and the like have based their entire lives around elaborate lies spun to bring fame to themselves. A situation for this calls not for a lie, but a partial truth for it is not a lie to purposefully exclude information... You suddenly notice that your hands have been rhythmically tapping the desk and you retract them before looking Valencia directly in the eyes.

"To be honest I believe it is possible that a dream I had last night was the cause. In it I seemed to witness another person's life, or at least the very last portions of it and as absurd as it sounds I feel like I was imprinted with... No, it feels more accurate to say I apparently inherited some part of the skill they achieved in their life time. When I woke up from this dream I was in the condition that you see now.

It's simply a theory of course, I am little more than a scholar of low status who has taken up adventuring, so my knowledge is somewhat lacking in these matters. As a man who has devoted much of his life to the pursuit of truth and followed only the observable truths it's all quite befuddling."

What awaits you is complete silence, the glow in Valencia's eyes slowly fading as she brings a up in what you assume is an inquisitive pose. It is incredibly fascinating how the sight of a single finger, so perfect that it doesn't seem fit for the mortal world and utterl-

You shake your hand to look away from her face as you begin to drill yourself on the various mathematical problems the Academy's teachers had burned into your mind, all in an effort to drive away the odd growing obsession you feel.

'It appears the records were not lying, Elves do seem to have some kind of vague and enchanting nature about them. What was it they said about those of weaker will who come into prolonged contact with them? Something about the formation of an obsession that leads people to devote their lives to the Elf they met?

Perhaps it's a trait that can be attributed to their divine lineage, assuming the fables and tales are right that is. If they are wrong though... well, no need to linger on those possibilities.'

It takes a while for a change to occur with the Elven doctor before you, but when it does the snapping of her fingers startles you out of your introspection.

"You are certainly not lying about what you said, someone of your strength simply cannot fool the will of the Dawn Tree. It is certainly possible that a fragment of someone of great might's soul somehow came in contact with your own causing it's memories to blend with yours, the sheer difference in power between the two of you resulting in a violent rejection.

Whatever the case may be, I did not feel any traces of a soul that isn't your own still within you. I will have to require you to visit here once a day for the next week to ensure there was nothing I missed, but you should ultimately be fine unless anything else occurs. I must apologize, but an injury to the soul is not something I am capable of fixing. It should slowly heal with time though if you need a more expedient solution then I recommend you visit the Temple of the Dead.

Priests of the Deathless One are exceptionally knowledgeable when it comes to the soul, such a treatment will of course strike a deep blow to your wallet.

Now, onto that which I can actually help you with. If you wish I can immediately restore your hands for a small fee of a silver and thirty coppers, or I can merely use herbal and alchemical options to ensure a swift recovery for forty coppers. What would you prefer, sir?"

You choose...
[] To have her heal your hands immediately, you do have work to do after all.
[] To settle for the cheaper, and slower option. You will have to make do for now.
[] Simply thank her for her time and leave, such prices are a bit steep for your current budget.
[] Write-in.

Description: Due to the recent influx of trade and people plying the many businesses of the Lord the request has been made to recruit more able scribes to help record all the financial records made in this time. Work would be long and tedious, but those with experience please accept.

GM Note: Adjusted your money to the right amount, forgot to change it when you had to reimburse the innkeeper for his newly bloodstained sheets. Remember, at times your QM has the memory of a sieve that got shot. Repeatedly.

We currently have a quest that needs the use of our hands, so we may have to suck up the greater cost.

...In other words, we swiped the scroll but we've done very little that's cool or fitting of a hero since, barely seeking out glory or opportunities to forge a legacy.

Well, to be fair, we have done some stuff: discovered fraud for the inn owner, gained and tamed our first monster follower, tried to train ourself... it's just that we started as a squishy Lvl. 1 Scribe, and we've only graduated to a slightly less squishy Lvl. 2 Scribe so far. It's gonna take some more time and experience until we're ready to venture forth and slay monsters.

We were hoping to nab the Swift Growth I from the Heroic Legacy Trait Shop once we got 10 Heroic legacy Points, which multiplies all our EXP gain by 1.25 permanently. Getting that should really help us grow so that we can start having adventures.

It's way back here:

[] Swift Growth I [10] - With enough power the Heroic Spirit can even help you grow, increasing the rate at which you earn experience by twenty-five percent permanently.

We only need 3 more Legacy Points, then we've got it.

Well huh, looks like elves get some kind of fey aura and detect lies as racial abilities, that's something. We'll hopefully be able to develop something to resist the fey aura with time, because we're a Hero with mental powers, but it'll be something to watch out for during our visits with her for the next week.

I wonder why the fey/entrancing aura centered on her hand/finger though? Was it because our own were injured, so the magic made hers look better in comparison? Was it just because after the scribe dream thing, our MC can appreciate a good pair of hands? Was the aura just making it so that whatever caught our attention about her seemed super entrancing? I'm not sure.

[] To have her heal your hands immediately, you do have work to do after all.

I'm tempted to do this so that we can immediately start on the Scribing quest, but I'm not sure if we'd be able to finish it quick enough to be able to pay for a night at the inn. Probably gonna go with the assisted healing then, and hope that we get payed within the next couple of days.

[X] To settle for the cheaper, and slower option. You will have to make do for now.

Edit: Something I just noticed; we seem to have gained a fourth Scholar Code after our dream with the giant Heroic Flame thing. That's nice.

We are a Scribe. Our hands are our working tools. What do we do without them?

How much does either option cost, anyway?

I wonder if we should ask if we could use our G.P to pay for the healing instead since we have a quite a bit more of it. Also wonder if there is any place we could exchange our G.P for normal money we should ask the receptionist about this.

[X] Ask if you can pay in Guild Points (G.P) instead, if you can how much would each option costs. If the full healing is under 50 G.P accept the full healing, if we can not pay in G.P then take the cheaper option.

Ugh, either spend all our money and rely on the Scribe job payment for our inn room tonight (or hope they provide room and board if it goes too long), or get the cheaper (still 1/3 of our money) medicine and do the job while penalized. This sucks.

Oh well, may as well ask.
