Umm... Y'all sure you really want 17 con?

Edit: As someone who owns over a dozen dogs I can say with 100% certainty that they aren't all that.

About 7 chihuahua's and more beagles than I can bother counting.

Eh, I'm doing this for the lulz, not for any actual strategic reason.

If @Pandemonious Ivy wants to edit that part, it's in their hands. I trust them to give us the best mastiff-wielding, hurdy-gurdy-playing slime bard the world has ever seen.

Oh sure it seems amusing right now, but I can almost guarantee you that it'll get old real quick.

[X] [Expertise] Arcana (New Spells!)
We'll get new spells and spell slots on leveling up. Bards don't seem to have any mechanic for learning ones they encounter.

Arcana is generally used when you encounter a magical effect/object and want to figure out what it is without having Identify or Detect Magic.

Investigation comes up most often when searching anything (rooms, corpses of enemies you just killed, etc)

For thieves, it also comes up when checking for traps.

Eh, the stats could go either way. We could describe the discrepancy between our endurance and dexterity to the effect of 'slimes don't dodge, but they don't have any internal organs either', if we'd like.

Incidentally, if we were to shove our arm down somebody's throat, owing to our lack of any bones which would inhibit such a maneuver, would they just immediately start choking? It's not like they could just swallow it or anything.

Slimes can move through a space as little as a square inch in size, but they can't end their round there. Mechanically at least, that's how that works.

So if you tried that, the slime would be forcefully expelled from the throat upon ending your turn.

Honestly I just copied a setup I liked and pasted it. I really didn't want to go through the trouble of making my own.

But, like, why? What force ejects them?

Even if it's just something like 'if you do that, you'll lose your arm because they'll bite it off or something', that'd be fine, I just want a reason.

I expect it will, yes, unless we do something even more odd and attempt to put it to productive use. Not impossible, but it will take more effort than we are probably willing to spend. Still, why would we even want Thieves Tools when we can probably squeeze through the lock?

Hey Rules Lawyer Person (sorry in advance if this offends you, I mean no insult), what are the combat advantages of having a trained Mastiff, and how woukd proficiency affect that? Are there any other advantages beside combat ones?

We're expecting to operate with a group (because a bard without a group is like a fighter without a sword. Or armor. Or his legs.) and will probably want to keep the fact that we're a slime on the down-low?

What, and NOT eat people? I find the very idea objectionable. Any group that does not accept us for what we are does not deserve us. And what we are is a literally man-eating (and woman-eating, we're not picky) bard. And also a damn good hurdy-gurdy player.

Going to bed. Second Tally. Vote ends tomorrow morning.

Note: I will be busy Friday to Saturday. Don't expect too much in the way of updates. But I may still be able to pop in from time to time.

Changing my vote to Almost Nimble Bard in the interest of making sure that Ivy's stat build does not win, as it is a very bad build (our main stats are Charisma and Dexterity... we have no reason at all to throw 15 points into Constitution, especially at the expense of our main stats and Intelligence; our dump stats should be Strength and Constitution, as we have no real need for those stats which means we can dump them safely). Hopefully, Almost Nimble Bard does not put 13 or 11 points into Constitution to the detriment of Intelligence and\or Wisdom.

I'm not sure why Intelligence would be our other main stat?

It's on the tool list, might as well pick one up!

Ivy I said cute, not good, like when your 3 year old baby sis draws a picture of you,
Sadly said baby posted her picture on the internet and now runs for the presidency because she got the support of the uneducated masses

But seriously Ivy, please change your vote
Your stat build is, to put it kindly, really bad and your spell build is invalid (has to many level 2 spells) & rather badish

Well a trained Mastiff can fight & act as an allied NPC during battle and can warn you if somebody approaches, that being said they are worse the an fellow adventurer but better then nothing

I'm saying it that way, because Mastiffs are still animals at the end of the day, and thus aren't particular smart

Meaning that when he runs away (either due fear effect or low HP) and leaves the combat range we are probably not going to see the mastiff ever again, because he is to dump to find his way back

Other then that you can also ride a Mastiff if you are a small creature, which we aren't btw

As for proficiency, that is usually only needed for Mounts when you lack the proper gear but still wish to use them

That being said, since we as mentioned above, cannot mount a Mastiff I would probably homebrew an alternative use for the Proficiency to make it not completly useless, but that is up to the GM here,

Mounted combat get's a bit confusing. (The mastiff is in there as a mount, which is why I'm talking about this)

Basically, you have intelligent mounts and non-intelligent mounts. Intelligent mounts basically do their own thing. Non-intelligent mounts can do exactly 3 actions: Dash, Help and Dodge.

Animal companions would probably be a more useful comparison, but I'm pretty sure most of them involve a telekinetic bond and a higher intelligence rating. It's also not something I typically deal with.

For non-combat, animals often have advantage of perception checks relying on smell. Just having an extra perception check when taking watch can be helpful, even if they don't have the best perception.
