[x] Stay at the big map and watch the fireworks.

Ah, so the "One hundred turns is, however" was a reference to preparing since the start of the game, not to time magic.

How to Beat Humans
[X] Go back to Remilia and watch her fight.

You look up at the big map for a few moments, then shake your head. Whatever it is, you aren't going to figure it out here. "Thank you both for explaining things to me," you say, and if Vita looks suspicious, Koakuma bows appropriately. You turn back to the table and consider sitting with someone else, to see if they have anything interesting - but they don't think Remilia can do it, and seem to be taking the Belkan Invasion as the end of the game, anyway. You return to the table as the turn changes once more and hop into the chair next to your sister. She winks at you and her wing curls around you as you lean against her.

"Trying to guess, or just interested in watching how things play out?" You shrug.

"A little of both," you respond, and she chuckles. She keeps tapping at pop-ups - minor and major events like trade deals and scandals - and a small box pops up in front of you … the demographics and statistics of her kingdom.

"You should be able to figure it out before the invasion begins," she says with a grin, and you look over the information. Most of it just concretely expresses what Koakuma stated - the people are very happy with their rulers, the aristocrats and other upper classes aren't endemically abusive or corrupt, education and health are good …. You shake your head and click through the options until you find a series of over-time graphs, all the while keeping half an eye on the growing dissent, dissatisfaction, and crime that seems to be cropping up. It's just like Koakuma said - cultural domination. Over time, cultural homogeneity. Which is just a little bit odd, over - after a check, hundreds of simulated years - and across several dozen planets. There just aren't that many factors that can unify people to such a degree ….

"Remilia-chan's people aren't happy anymore."

"Mm. And your ally has been asking around, too. Are you sure you're going to be able to fight the Belkans?" Remilia just smiles toothily at Fate as you dig through her demographics, finally finding more or less what you expected - the culture of her kingdom is highly religious, although without extending into the political sphere. There is no state religion, and no laws forbidding or requiring religion, it simply … is dominated by a single apocalyptic religion. That must have been tricky, if she didn't use her magic or power to manipulate the game - but she said she didn't cheat, so she must have done so within the context of the game itself. Well, she is your amazing sister, after all. She squeezes against you, pressing you close with her wing, and you match her grin.

"Not only fight, young Fate, but prevail. As I said - I plan to force the Belkans to withdraw, and that has not changed. These disruptions are merely the pawing of an impatient horse." You shake your head at the looks of confusion on the Mid-Childans, and Remilia smiles. "You should study animals more. Knowing whether a beast strikes to slay or to flee, whether its huffs are a bluff or a sign of danger - humans are not so far removed from the beasts of the field or the birds of the sky, after all." Megane looks up from her screens.

"Have you studied animals much, Remilia?" Your sister laughs darkly and shakes her head.

"I have not, but I have read much of humans' own writings - and I have studied humans in great depth. Do you know what you are, deep inside? It is a very rare state … most humans do not truly know themselves, what they are capable of. What they truly are, in the dark and the cold. It is a weakness, the antithesis of youkai - but it is a strength, that allows humans to trust other humans. Because they do not know themselves, they believe that others are not monsters and so grant them trust." Fate stiffens and sits upright, staring at your sister.

"I think you're wrong about a lot of people, Remilia-chan. They're better than you think."

"Oh, people are indeed good and kind. To humans." Remilia looks at each of the others in turn. "You humans are quite sacrificing, almost altruistic, but that quality is highly dependent on two factors. The first factor is attractiveness; a kitten or puppy will garner more sympathy, receive more aid, than a snake or a snail, because it is more attractive to your typical human. The second factor is that of family, and you humans are quite self-deceiving in that matter, and the extremes of human treatment are based heavily on the notions of acceptance and repudiation." The burgeoning discussion ends as the Belkan Invasion begins, crushing one of the non-player states that existed in the south of the map, and the Belkans sweep north and east, overrunning Fate's domain and slamming into Megane and Zest's states. Fate's forces conduct an attempt at defense, almost a mere formality, and after they're smashed her state surrenders swiftly. Megane's forces fare a little better, but after the arrival of the Cradle and the invasion of her capital world, her nation also surrenders. Zest's state, larger and more hostile, bloodies the Belkan fleets sent against it, but even the destruction of his capital doesn't end the resistance entirely - perhaps a quarter of his domain surrenders, half continues fighting in the name of the government, and the remainder attempt to gain their own independence.

"War 'to the last broken knife and the last poisoned well'?" Remilia bows her head to Fate, and you watch as the Belkan invasion fleets advance toward your sister's state.

"Indeed. I said that family is an important part of what determines how humans treat each other, and that acceptance and repudiation govern the extremes of human behavior. When a human says, 'You are my brother, and I will fight for you,' that is expected; when it is said to an unrelated human, it is an expression of deepest trust - what many humans deem righteousness. Loyalty, honor, and the related concepts … these are counted among the greatest treasures of humanity. But when a human says, 'You are not a human; you are less than the dog on my floor, the pig in my barn, the monkey living in the forest,' - when he says that, when he repudiates the humanity of another human … then the knives come out. Blood stills into poison incomparable, and we youkai bow before the multitude of atrocities that our betters commit in the name of humanity." The Belkan fleets assault the border worlds and smash the defending fleets, the hastily-built defense platforms. The planets do not surrender, and attempt to launch strikes at the orbiting ships, so the Belkans descend to compel surrender, leading with battalions of automatons. The armies are wiped out, the only prisoners taken those too wounded to continue fighting, and the militia - half-trained men and women, adolescents eager to show their faith - replace them, only to be shattered and scattered to the winds. The Belkans attempt to pacify the cities, and are attacked by common citizens with knives, thrown masonry, poisoned, strangled, buried under corpses. Factories, built beneath hospitals and guarded by nurseries, continue to produce modern armaments … and when the Belkans finally withdraw from the planets, your sister's kingdom is richer by twenty billion martyrs.

"What …?" You aren't sure if Megane meant to say anything; she certainly looks horrified by your sister's callousness. Fate and Nanoha both look unhappy and disappointed, and Vita is practically trembling with rage.

"The designers made everyone human, but allowed for superhuman alterations. In reality, this level of fanatic devotion to a religion would not be possible - not so consistently over two-score and more planets. And the Belkans are merely human, themselves. Yes, they will continue fighting - but my kingdom will not surrender when they slaughter its ruler, when they obliterate the capital world. They are human, and they can hate … but this kingdom repudiates them entirely, and is so vast. The Belkans will break and will not complete their conquest." You nod in agreement, and Fate blanches and looks away. Nanoha looks sorrowfully at her screen for a moment.

"Do you not care for your people?" Remilia looks at Zest for a moment before nodding.

"I do - but this is a simulation, a game, and these are not my people. And were this reality, and the only possibility for the survival of my people to turn them against the invaders, to repudiate them - then I would do it. A people forged into weapons to annihilate an invader can be healed, can be turned into ploughshares. A people destroyed are gone." She sounds almost wistful, and you rub your cheek against hers. Does she miss Hesse? Maybe you can sneak out of Gensokyo and visit, just the two of you ….

"Hey. Is what Reimu said true?" Everyone looks at the fiercely-glaring Vita, and your sister nods once. "Good. 'Cause you're making everyone upset, and that means you're getting uppity." She holds out Graf Eisen authoritatively, and in a flash of red she's armored by her Barrier Jacket and pointing her hammer at Remilia. "I, Vita, Knight of the Iron Hammer, challenge you, Remilia. And when I exterminate you, you have to stop being so awful just to try and prove a point!" Chairs shuffle back - Nanoha, Fate, and, a little surprisingly, Zest. Well, they might entertain your sister a bit ….

[X] Watch the fight.

Remilia chuckles and nods. "Well, it is quite nice out, so I suppose I shall indulge you." She looks back at the game and taps her lips before looking over at Nanoha. "Should we finish the game? I would rather like to see how it ends, after all."

"We can set it to continue automatically; it's already recording the game for later viewing," Fate says, and Remilia nods again before glancing at you and shrugging.

"Then I suppose we should remove ourselves to the dueling area. Pache, if you would show them? I need to ready myself." You frown, but Remilia just smiles and kisses your forehead, then dissolves into a swarm of bats that surges out of the room. Patchouli sighs and closes her book before floating toward the door, waiting for you and the others to catch up to her.

"The dueling grounds are in the back, but there is a reason we're taking the long way," she says, and Vita scoffs irritatedly.

"What, you're going to tell us that we don't have a chance of beating her and we should just give up?" You chuckle, earning a glare from her, but Patchouli just shakes her head.

"That is true, of course, but it isn't what we want. The first thing is that Remilia will want you to fight her at your best, to not hold back simply because she is your host. That includes the expectation that you will all fight against her together, rather than in series." Fate frowns at Patchouli's back, then looks at you.

"She doesn't care about losing or winning, then? What about you?" You smile and shake your head.

"She won't lose - she's better at fighting than I am, and there are fewer of you now than there were against me. And if you do win - so what? You're heroes, you're supposed to defeat monsters if you're strong enough. And if Vita smiles a bit more over the next few days, then it's all the better." Nanoha laughs and Vita actually blushes as she scowls at you.

"Indeed. As Flandre does, I do not believe you actually can defeat Remilia - this mansion and its grounds are her world, and she has access to all her stored energy. Perhaps, if you fought her elsewhere, the four of you might be able to defeat her if she does not choose to exercise her full magical strength …." Patchouli shakes her head and stops before turning and taking something out of a pocket. "Nanoha, this is for you, to use in the battle against Remilia." Nanoha takes the deep red prism and holds it gingerly.

"How did you acquire a Relic?" Fate's eyes are narrow, and Patchouli sighs.

"That is not a Relic; it is a Philosopher's Stone Remilia asked me to create for Nanoha. It will temporarily allow her to exercise her current full magical might without further damaging her body or her Linker Core, and will be necessary for her to engage Remilia effectively." Fate and Vita both look at Nanoha with concern as Patchouli turns and continues drifting down the hallway.

"It's safe to use, right?" You resist the urge to scoff at Vita's question - she genuinely worries about Nanoha, and infuriating her right now would be very rude.

"Vita-chan, they wouldn't do something like that." Vita's look shows that she isn't convinced, but she bites her lip and keeps silent. "Patchouli-chan, how do I use it?"

"Simply hold it against your bare skin - around the chest would be most efficient, followed by the face - and heat it up. Once it starts melting, it will flow through your skin and take full effect in about a minute. It should last for a few hours of intense magical use, but will definitely pass through your system within a few days." Nanoha nods and studies the opaque stone, but doesn't use it immediately. She also doesn't put it away, however, and you all keep following Patchouli to the back of the mansion. You let yourself fall back until you reach Satsuki.

"So who are you hoping will win, Satsuki?" She blushes and wrings her hands, flustered by your knowing tone, and you giggle before rubbing your head against her side. Sakuya shakes her head slowly in apparent disappointment. Patchouli leads you to the terrace overlooking the back lawn, and as you run to the railing you see your sister. She's standing on a large, lonely branch, facing away from you but bent almost in a fishhook shape, and as you smile and wave she opens glowing red eyes. Her wings snap open as she turns and steps off the branch into open air, and she looks down at the group with an amused expression.

"Come, children - come challenge the Scarlet Moon on this hot, fun night!" The atmosphere around you billows as Fate, Nanoha, and Zest ready themselves for combat, and the already-prepared Vita hurtles forward. Her wild overhead swing misses completely as Remilia slips under and around it, and to cap off the evasion Remilia shoves Vita toward the ground before launching herself higher, above the trees, as Zest and Fate surge toward her. Megane leans against the rail next to you.

"Are you worried?" She doesn't say anything as you watch Remilia dart between attacks and dodge brilliant pink beams. Once Vita works up the momentum for another charge - a spinning rush assisted by Graf Eisen - Remilia abandons her static tactics, opting to never be even remotely stationary, and you grin as Fate and Zest are put to work trying to interpose themselves between her and Nanoha. For her part, the white mage ceases using large-scale sparks and switches to a horde of small pink orbs that hound your sister relentlessly.

"… How do you feel about Lutecia?" You cock your head as Remilia hard-blocks one of Zest's strikes, then spins him around and hurls him toward the ground. Fate takes advantage of the that - and Vita's next rush, assisted by Nanoha's orbs - to change tactics considerably, abandoning her scythe for a pair of single-edged blades and taking up s position in front of Nanoha.

"She's my friend, and I want her to be happy. She's not stupid - she knows what I am and some of what I do - but I've tried to keep the worst of my playing around from her. I don't want to change her. I want her to stay my friend, of course, but I don't want to make her suddenly think that cutting off humans' heads is perfectly normal behavior for her just because I do it." Remilia hurtles upward and is intercepted by Fate as Nanoha falls back toward the ground, but it's hard to tell if Remilia is pinning Fate or the other way around as the sky lights up with arcs of red and gold lightning, signs of the two keeping each other from concentrating on anything but the other. Taking advantage of that, the others come to a rest over the lawn and Nanoha starts preparing a spell. Vita and Zest confer quickly as Nanoha's Device begins drawing in power, and then Zest casts a caging spell at your sister as Vita teleports Fate to safety.

Your sister thunders down, slapping aside Zest's attempt to interpose himself and smashing through Nanoha's first defense spell before bouncing off the collapsing second barrier. She floats in the air, apparently unharmed, and smiles - then she snaps her fingers and crimson bolts fall from the sky like rain. Fate darts forward, somehow keeping up with Remilia even while dodging the incoming bursts of magic, while Zest simply shields himself more heavily and moves to support her. Nanoha moves back to keep her distance, supporting the two front-liners with binding attempts and those chasing orbs, while Vita … you aren't sure where she flits off to, but it's probably to try dealing with your sister's support magic. Remilia pushes back Zest and Fate, moving toward Nanoha, when Zest abruptly withdraws, leaving only Fate to try and block your sister - at least, for a few seconds, before a gigantic hammer comes smashing down on them, and scarlet shards of crystallized magic fly out as Graf Eisen slams into the ground. You and Megane step back as a wall of dust and shattered earth flies toward the mansion, but nothing passes the plane of the railing, and Patchouli shakes her head as the aftershocks of the impact faintly rumble the mansion. Fate floats down, panting heavily, to examine the aftermath of Vita's attack, and starts to relax before whipping her blades up and backing away as your sister slams into her, claws lashing out furiously.

"Enjoying yourself, Flandre?" Remilia smiles at you, sitting on the edge of the enormous hammer, and Megane frantically looks back and forth between her and the Remilia fighting Fate. You grin and your sister bows her head before looking at the magician. "Pache, did you give Nanoha the stone?"

"I did, but I didn't make sure she used it. Should I have?" Your sister sighs and shakes her head as another simulacrum carries an unconscious Vita to the terrace, and a ragged Zest lands as well, his Barrier Jacket scorched and slashed. Megane hurries to his side, but he shakes his head and looks at Remilia.

"Two at once?" Remilia spreads her arms and grins.

"You know when you're beaten. These girls … not so much." Fate limps through the air, escorted by another simulacrum. Her Barrier Jacket is badly shredded all along her left side, and she looks around worriedly before sighing in relief and looking up. You lean over the balcony and look up as well, and see a few exchanges of pink and scarlet lightning - then a massive explosion.

"… No, Remilia, she didn't use it," Patchouli says dryly, and your sister shoots her a look. Fate, an agonized expression on her face, starts to fly up, but another simulacrum appears, carrying a nervously-smiling Nanoha. Her Barrier Jacket is badly scorched throughout, her right arm looks broken, and her Device is snapped along the haft. Remilia stands up and turns a stern expression on her.

"Really, Nanoha. We were trying to avoid events like this, you understand?" Nanoha sighs and nods and starts to respond, and Remilia stomps on the hammer. It dissolves, and she spins the miniature form's chain once. "Oh, keep it, you stupid little girl! Save it for a threat you need it for, or give it to a researcher you hate. Pache, take her and Fate and check them over." She whirls and floats over to Vita, gently picking her up and carrying her toward the door. Satsuki scurries out of the way, but Sakuya keeps her composure and holds the door for Remilia. You frown at Nanoha - she actually looks a little guilty, so maybe you shouldn't make her feel any worse ….

Why didn't Nanoha use the stone? Unlike Fate, she didn't seem that against it when Patchouli gave it to her. Did someone convince her not to use it, or was she maybe thinking she'd save it for a finishing blow and not get the chance to use it in time?

Why didn't Nanoha use the stone?
She and Raising Heart came to the conclusion that if it worked as effectively as Patchouli implied it did, then it worked by insulating the Linker Core (and, presumably, parts of her body) from mana overload. If that were true, then using the Philosopher's Stone would also slow her down by a measurable degree - enough to outweigh the firepower benefit from using it. She didn't actually make the final decision until the fight began, though, and decided to apologize and return it after the match, regardless of the outcome.

(As an aside: IIRC, in a Post-StrikerS match in the manga, Signum came out more intact than Nanoha, which implies to me that while she isn't as fragile as Fate, she still isn't particularly tanky. EDIT: At least Fate's less protective forms; in their base forms, particularly in StrikerS, I'm not at all sure that Fate is any less defensive than Nanoha.)

The question is a bit complex but:
Season 1:
-Nanoha's base form should be a bit tankier and a bit less maneuverable than Fate's base form from the TV release, but Sonic Form drops all defense for speed.

Season 2:
-Initial comparisons say that Nanoha's defense is better. Vita took her two cartridge drilling attack(which is specifically anti-barrier) to penetrate Nanoha's defense and even then it took a bit of time to grind through. Signum cut through Fate's defense in a single cartridge boosted stroke as soon as she got a straight shot, but took a while to actually get a straight hit on Fate.
-After the Cartridge system upgrade, Nanoha has a visibly bulkier costume, with more gems/field emitters on it(the Movie version adds a whole breastplate under the clothes). Fate is visibly faster after the upgrade but apparently no more durable. At this point I think the gap is pretty significant.

Season 3:
-Nanoha seems to be basically Same-but-more.
-Fate added a heavy mantle, which probably adds a bit more defense and avoids public indecency charges.

That said, it's noted by the Wolkenritter that Nanoha is tanky for a midchildan style user. Her barrier jacket is designed to exchange fire at high speed and long range.
She's absolutely nowhere near as tanky as a Belkan style fighter, which has a style that involves charging through a barrage of laser fire to land devastating melee hits.

Assuming you're talking about the initial fight in Episodes 1-2 ... that's ....

Nanoha was injured blocking Vita's initial attack (you can see her holding her right hand while she's falling, before transforming), then blocks the first hit with a barrier and then Raising Heart. After getting knocked flying, Vita makes a second Raketenform attack that also breaks through Protection, damages Nanoha's Barrier Jacket, and again knocks her flying. It's not clear just how much physical damage Nanoha suffered as a result of those attacks compared to the damage she took before putting on the Barrier jacket.

When Signum first arrives, she gets a deflecting hit on Bardiche (no damage), then loads a Cartridge to activate Purple Lightning Flash and first cuts through Bardiche's haft (essentially cosmetic damage), then has her second attack blocked by Defenser (no damage). She then breaks through a Shield/Barrier, then loads a Cartridge and inflicts damage on Bardiche. After loading another Cartridge, she and Fate continue to clash, but the focus turns to Nanoha, so if she gets hit again it isn't shown (although we know that Fate hits Signum at some point).

So what we have is Signum and Vita both using Cartridge-enhance attacks to break through defensive spells (Defenser and Protection, respectively) - but that's part of the problem. Those are defensive spells, not the Barrier Jackets, and while Vita does damage Nanoha's Barrier Jacket, Signum doesn't get a hit against Fate's. Not that that would be a terribly valid comparison in the first place, because all that would tell us is that Signum can damage Fate's Barrier Jacket with her Cartridge-enhanced attack, and Vita can damage Nanoha's Barrier Jacket wither her Cartridge-enhanced attack. And if we do see them being damaged by the other attack, that still doesn't necessarily tell us anything, only that Vita/Signum can damage Barrier Jackets with their attacks.

... Anyway.
For obvious reasons, I'm focusing more on StrikerS, which has the added complication of Nanoha's injury, but do you remember where that comparison was said? I did check Episode 3 of A's, but that just has Signum remarking on Fate's skill and saying that if Laevatein didn't outclass Bardiche so much the battle would have been more difficult.

Anyway, here's the images from Nanoha and Signum's exhibition match:

They'd been 'fighting' for ~20 minutes prior to that, mostly demonstrating battle techniques, then went all-out against each other for about three minutes. Nanoha gets a partial hit in thanks to a close-range bind, barely dodges a Sturmfalken, then trades what is probably Divine Buster against something called 'Kouya' (Gleaming Fang?), with the above results.

*Looks over post a couple times*
... This is why I left SB :/ Gods, but Vs. Debates was bad for me :(

Really, Nanoha? You had the creator of the stone right next to you and could've just asked how it works...
