There's an idea. Make friends, then head east to slay the darkness that was man's beginning, and bring the rest into the light.
Could be a good goal for the Bëor. As the Wisest of the Houses of Men, they have the best chance to unify the three and gain the aid of the Elves for a campaign to free the eastern reaches of the world. And that could have some serious knock on effects for the balance of power.

I admit a grand crusade like that is more appealing than just digging in and waiting.

To have a serious change on the War of the Jewels...and I always found interesting the idea of eastern Men that weren't sworn to the Enemy.

And now that I've been elucidated on the potential of man, the idea of doing what the Edain could not and building a great power in the First Age, to match the greatest of the Firstborn at their height, is most intriguing.

It will be interesting to see what even random chance does, honestly. A lot of the major actors are so driven by their natures that they barely could be said to have free will but even tiny changes may mean that their headlong charges go in strange directions. And this is without player interaction.
TBH I think the overall result would still be the same (Morgoth gains control over most of Beleriand before Host of the Valar arrive), but casualties could be substantially lower.

@Demitius @Fezzes : any chance I could get you to switch which house of the edain you're voting for? Besides Hurin, the great of lords of the house of Hador are also descendants of Beor, through Morwen Eledhwen and Rían; Turin Turambar and Tuor Eladar and Eärendil Peredhil and of course the twins, Elrond and Elros.
Seconding this. @Demitius @Fezzes you might also want to know that in addition to the OTL ties between the Hadorian and Beorian nobility, these two houses originated from the same group of Men who headed west, with the House of Beor (Lesser Folk) splitting and crossing into Beleriand first while the House of Marach/Hador (Greater Folk) tarrying a bit longer. The Beorians and Hadorian peoples are therefore also closely related.

Thinking about our propensity for action, I'm not sure we'd be able and willing to stand by digging and building and letting the world go around us.

In which case the low XP growth (and Grace, further hindering growth) would be an issue for development while also being part of the wider world.

Men could perhaps serve to bring the other races of the east into more direct action, like Durin's folk, the Avari, etc.

The elves of the east are thoroughly focused on the east. And Man has the capacity to learn from both elder races.

Can you honestly say that if we were to play as Dwarves and hear of kin and possible allies and good folk dying, you'd just be able to stay put? Didn't happen in the last big LOTR quest with Dwarves, by Sayle.

If we do end up dabbling in the east, not unlikely with either dwarves or men, it will be very interesting to see what is playing around off stage. There was a lot going on but we never really got to see it due to the focus of the books.

The Avari are doing something on the shores of their Garden of Eden and reaching a long ways beyond, touched by shadow but never wholly shadow. Humanity mocking the movements of Migration Era, already branching into dozens of distinct peoples, possibly whole subspecies considering the druedain, with many fairly well established if they can maintain a funerary culture like with the Barrow Downs. It was clearly not a quiet place.

I'm fine with getting out there, so long as we at least get a good fortress mountain and a lvl 5 backup(or two) before a full mobilization.

(not going full dig-dug might help us not digging up hell too early)

Durins folk are actually well positioned to be the light in the east, starting well east of the other players

Yeah, and that will require focusing more on the internal than the external. The last time there was a dwarf quest and it looked like people outside were gonna get fucked, they sprang to heading out there and fighting, not just entrenching more.

We could invite the people outside to come inside?

They will feel much better within the embrace of a mountain without all that sky addling their brains.
