How else does one grow? And this can be characterised as him being offended enough (you can add in Megan's reaction causing him to look again at the lies Rita wrote and have it be, ever so slightly, personal), to break out of his comfort zone and do something drastic and... talk to people :)

[X] Plan Doing the Mystery Justice
One grows naturally. And tracking down every goddamned person in Ravenclaw is so massively out of character that it's not even close to natural. I'm not sure if you noticed or not but Jacob is not a good person. What you want him to do is what a good person would do. Jacob wouldn't do this for no benefit of his own. He gets nothing out of this. He hates attention and would never do this. And the sheer quantity of people you want to track down and talk to is far to much for him to believably go for. Because he doesn't give a shit about how other people are handling this. He doesn't care about Skeeter's article as you do. This mystery, this case, is over. He's solved the riddle and now it no longer interests him.

Hmm, on second look at the write in, there is no limit or mention on how many, and the scale is quite large. @veekie, you mentioned later on that you were hoping for a group of 1-3rd years mostly, maybe you could make that a bit clearer in the vote?

Personally I still wanna present the facts to a few people and let them do what they want with it. Basic practice for when we give presentations for funding for our ARCHEOLOGICAL EXPEDITIONS! :D

Edit: I read "Knowing that it was all fake let you see how perverted and sickening the woman really was" as him perciving Rita as sick and perverted, and I strongly disagree with your assessment on Jacob's charcheter, or that bit where he told Megan to call him Jacob would not, I fell, have happened if he was as cold as you are postulating.

The dude's quiet and shy, not a dick to just drop the consequences of his actions, keep secret basic information after the effects are right Infront of him

I mean he might become such if we choose to make him so, but I think we may have to politely disagree on where we want this dude's charcheter to develop. :(

No I read him as an utter jackass rather than quiet and shy. He has a heart. And he definitely won't ignore what's in front of him. But at the same time he's detached and has very little patience with others and prefers solitude. If he's directly responsible for something he'll take the steps to make up for it. But Rita Skeeter is not his fault. And thusly he doesn't care as much as the 'gather every last member of Ravenclaw together and tell them everything' implies he does. He may be sickened by her glory hounding but not enough to do something so wildly out of character as the vote.

And no, all of Ravenclaw is not just 'a few people' anyways. It's at least 60+ people and that's low balling it.

Edit: If you want to do something about Skeeter gather up the professors and tell them what we found. Telling a bunch of students is just attention seeking.

Sorry for double post, but as a free action, @veekie , what about writing Jacob's parents about what happened? #worriedpeoplearetiresometoreadabout :)
That seems fine. I'll add it in as a free action.

The intent is to just make it known that we're willing to clear the air on the matter of the mystery, and any Ravenclaws, of the affected classes who're feeling uneasy(as well as nosy Ravenclaws in general who want to know) can show up if they want. This lets him clear the matter without people approaching him at random to ask, or worse, believing Skeeter's shit.

We aren't doing this for them. We're doing this for the mystery and how Skeeter fucked it all up is offensive enough for him to step a bit outside his comfort zone to disambiguate to a small-medium group of people.

This isn't wholly new to him. He HAS interacted and fairly normally but he sees no purpose in seeking out people just to talk to them. Conversations of substance are fine.

I repeat myself from earlier. Go to the professors if you want something done. Otherwise gathering such a large group is attention seeking at best.

I am not afraid of dying – It is not that you don't fear; you are not a Gryffindor. You feel terror and experience fear just as anyone else. But you are not afraid of dying. There is no reason to be afraid of the unavoidable. You will live your life to the fullest and answer as many of the questions that linger on your mind as you can. But when it is time… you will smile and go.

This both annoys and disgusts me because of my own beliefs. Why do people in HP quests just love to be Thanatophilliacs is beyond me.

I'm fine with this. Yes, there are plenty of ways with which to subvert death as shown by Jacob's parents, ghosts, Sally-Anne, and even Voldemort, but that doesn't mean one should or has to try to flee from death. In spite of his out-of-the-box thinking and unique perspective, Jacob is at his core a simple person, a student enjoying the wonders of magic and the delight of discovering mysteries. He isn't-and doesn't need to be-a special person. He doesn't want to be a leader or an archmage, and he's not destined for some grand deeds. All he wants to do is discover magical mysteries-that is the answer he found with the closing of this first case. He will live fully for the joy and thrill of uncovering the mysteries lost in time and magic, and he will not regret it. He will live fully chasing what he loves and shall die content.

Hehe, in all honesty, it's far too of an enlightened answer for such a young child. How many of us can claim we have found our razon d'etre afterall?

It's nice to see how Jacob isn't falling into the pitfall of fame and instead mourning how annoying everyone pestering him is. He sought out Sally-Anne because he was curious not because he wanted the fame. If anyone wants to know what happened, well, the pieces are already there. He solved it, so they can too. Also, his mute impression is getting better with how he refuses to even talk to anyone. Really need to learn how to do wordless spells to fully sell the act.

In contrast to Jacob however, we've got the attention-hungry Rita...

Yeah, Rita's trash. Distorting the truth for her own benefit, making herself look tragic and pitiful, is despicable. No reason not to oust the fraud. The letter is going to be anonymous, and I highly doubt the QM is going to bend that around to have it bite us in the butt later.

Besides, Jacob just accepted he's not going to fear death anymore. Why should he fear gossiping libel-if there is any-from a middle-age fraud?

Being able to see "underneath the underneath" is a great thing indeed.

This is a touching and important moment for Jacob. The entire chapter has been Jacob being the cold and detached detective bemoaning all the new attention; however, it is here, he sees the first sign of genuine appreciation. He's starting to realize that there's more to mysteries than just the joy of solving them; answering them can also help people. Megan was unknowingly bereaved of her friend and stuck in a melancholic limbo without really knowing why. Jacob saved her from that. By shining the light on the disappearance of Sally-Anne, he also showed her the light, letting her grieve and move on.

Interesting analysis. I really enjoy posts like these, because it allows me to see what ideas reach the reader and helps me adapt my writing. Thank you!

@Tabula Rasa Just how much OOC can we act before you veto a vote?

I won't be vetoing at all, I think. Just tell you when something is not possible. This vote as it is right now is possible. I will certainly roll for it and put a spin on it, but the only thing you really have to take care with is what your wand thinks of your actions (Not that this specific action is a problem, just in general).

I get you enjoy letting us do as we please with a character, but I do feel there should be limits on what you allow of us freedom wise. But that's hopefully a problem we'll never have to face.

That being said I do have to still protest gathering every last person in Ravenclaw and telling them everything. I feel it's far to much out of character for Jacob to do. And it's attention seeking as fuck.

Fagus wood, Phoenix feather core, 12" long - The true match for a beech wand will be, if young, wise beyond his or her years, and if full-grown, rich in understanding and experience. Beech wands perform very weakly for the narrow-minded and intolerant. Phoenix feather wands are always the pickiest when it comes to potential owners, for the creature from which they are taken is one of the most independent and detached in the world. These wands are the hardest to tame and to personalise, and their allegiance is usually hard won. (Wand only available due to chosen origin. +5 to all spellcasting. If too many actions are taken that speak against the ideals of the wand, the wand will mark you unworthy and lose the bonus)
Reminder of the details.
-Keep an open mind
-Do not discriminate or allow prejudice to sway you
-Be of wisdom and insight

Phoenix feather takes the Beech qualities and amplifies it further.

Please either actually read it or stop misrepresenting it. Its specifically offering to disambiguate the mystery for affected students, and anyone interested.

This being Ravenclaw we'd get a few more showing up out of pure academic curiosity, but I don't really expect many to show up even amongst the affected classes.
But we know there IS an interest in the facts of the mystery and the Fake News is making that impenetrable.

I did read it. Anyone interested in actually investigating it would know instantly that Rita is full of shit. Also Jacob has never done it before. Telling people the answer to questions. He prefers to satisfy himself with them and keep quiet.

Also you don't seem to get that this is the thing news does. They take whatever they think will interest the public and slather it everywhere for ratings.

And again, if you want to deal with Skeeter's bullshit, tell the professors. Not a bunch of children with little to no pull to their name.

-[x] Case 2: I am afraid of dying – Your first case has given you a new perspective onto things. When someone dies, how are they turned into ghosts? Are they fully here or is it only an afterimage, stuck in between both worlds. Professor Binns often calls students by the wrong names and gives the wrong houses points… but does he? There is system to the madness. (Costs 2 actions)
-[x] Quidditch Round 1, Ravenclaw vs Gryffindor – It's time for the first game of the year and while you have a lot of things that you'd like to focus on, most of the school will be present here. Go and watch the Quidditch Game. It could be interesting and if it is not, well you will be high enough up to watch the clouds instead. Win-Win.
-[x] Business School of Hogsmeade (Multiple Actions on this count as multiple rolls stacking) – This is the first year, in which you can go to Hogsmeade. Good that you've been planning for this since first year: Buy Books, Ingredients, Joke Shop Articles, Instruments and other things. Go and look, if you can make some money by buying things for first and second years. Roll for how many are interested and then for how much they want to spend. Take 10% of their spending as a fee. x2
-[x] Stage I, Dreams of old (Takes 2 Actions) – The book your father gave you is one without adornment as decoration, nor is there any title to find on the old leather binding. There is not one word written on the pages of the old tomb and your father gave you nothing but one clue: It has something to do with memory magic. What is this riddle about?
-[x] Stage II, A Shadow behind the Paintings (Multiple Actions on this count as multiple rolls stacking) – Most pupils go through their life at Hogwarts without ever looking beyond what they can see. You have already taken a first step in getting a better understanding of the structures surrounding you. Now you only need to dig deeper. (Find passages going out of Hogwarts.) Multiple DC thresholds to see how many you find, from low to very high. x2
-[x] Write In: Clear the Air(Ravenclaw) - Megan let you realize something. Sally-Anne's disappearance would have affected many of your fellow students, and Skeeter's lies are doing them no favors if they researched the matter of their own, with deliberate deceit muddying the waters. Detail and present the mystery and the evidence you've found in the Ravenclaw common room, particularly for the students of the affected years(and of course, letting the teachers know beforehand). See if anyone can turn up additional facts relating to the case, to get more precise timelines, who were affected and how it happened.

[X] Plan Case Work, Family History, and Learning New Things

I was fine with the low effort anonymous letter because it was a simple way to get back at Rita, but rounding up an entire crowd like an audacious activist is both far too much effort and sets an annoying precedent.

In the case of disseminating the truth to the wider public, it really won't do much because the audience is just going to be children. Nor will it be able to counter Rita's story because it can easily be spun as coming from schoolyard gossip and not from a reputable source.

But what I dislike most about the opposing vote is what it means for Jacob. Jacob is a solitary seeker of truth. What matters to him is the pursuit of mystery and solving them. After that, he is content because that is all he is concerned with. He did not care about telling others about what transpired, he did not care about the points he received, and he did not care about any fame or attention he garnered. They were all non-issues at best and nuisances at worst. I enjoyed this because it side-stepped the pitfalls of fame while also increasing Jacob's mysteriousness.

To come forth with the truth would ultimately shift Jacob's priorities. Instead of ignoring the muttering and rumors of the masses and moving on to the next mystery, he would feel obligated to address them. An introvert, one who has constantly shunned attention, who would wake hours before others to avoid them, and who speaks so seldom that an-admittedly slightly dimwitted-classmate never heard him speak in two whole years of schooling, would now have to rally and convince crowds like the charismatic talker that he isn't. Jacob sees the truth, but he is not one to stand on a soapbox and shout it out to the world. He makes numerous insights almost every chapter yet never mentions them to others. This would be a turning point. He would start to feel the need to tell people, to draw everyone's attention and tell them everything. It would become a routine: solve a mystery then espouse how he solved it to an adoring audience. That's not the path I would want him to take.

Ultimately, plan Doing the Mystery Justice ironically does more injustice to it. The mystery has been solved. The case has been closed. Sally-Anne led to rest. Now, let it pass and move on.
