Quest to Become a Hero

[X] Go read in the Guild Library.

I'll go with this option as we've been told in the past when ever we visit the store that what we get from it depends upon our appraisal skill so I'd like to do some more research about it, and necessary negotiation skills that an adventurer needs. After all, realistically the character should be negotiating constantly whether that's for food, rooms to stay at, purchasing or selling items, or trying to increase the reward that a job offers.

This is also another opportunity to use dominate writing, plus there could be a potential way to gain further XP by trying to dominate two writings at once. While OOC we know there's a limit from the character sheet, I'm not sure if IC we know yet so it would be valuable information.

I thought we weren't allowed to use Dominate Writing on the books in the Guild Library any more. There was that big booming voice chastising us for doing so last time, remember?

We didn't use it on the Guild writings, we made our own notes and Dominated those. We got the Big Booming Voice telling us that using it on our own stuff was okay, but not any of the guild stuff. So what we want to do is use Transcribe Writing to copy the section we need on to our own paper, and then dominate that.

I'd like to use the library to research how to take proper care of our Minion, but if people just want to get a quick boost to Appraisal before shopping, then that's fine too. We need the Dominate Writing exp anyway. Keep in mind though that the Dominate Buff is just a stopgap solution to our ignorance, since it's temporary and takes time and effort to put together the disposable copy. If we really want a long term solution, then there are Identification lessons we can attend:

Learning About Haggling and the Power Known As Identification

Groaning in he process, you stumble up off the ground and towards the exit of the training hall. You aren't in the best shape for physical labor, or anything like that so it's the perfect time to go about reading some books that might help figure out more about the Guild's hidden functions and even assist in haggling with the non-Guild merchantmen. By the time you make it all the way up the stairs and to the Library door you find yourself short of breath again, stinging pain coming from overworked and bruised muscles, but before you can proceed that familiar voice booms around you.

"Leave the Vicious Rabbit outside, even if you have full control I would rather not tempt fate and end up with books damaged for it. I'll make sure no one bothers it."

You wearily agree before ordering your minion to remain here in the hall, out of the way of others, before heading inside. Something about the various bookshelves laden with books, scrolls, and the like is exceptionally comforting to you as you go about hunting down materials that might apply to your current needs. All told you manage to hunt down three books that might be of use - 'A Beginner's Guide to Haggling', 'What a New Adventurer Should Know About Identification', and 'Properly Utilizing the Guild Card for Matters of Trade'.

Pushing the other books aside you decide to delve into the book on haggling first.

---

Haggling is an inevitable part of an Adventurer's life from buying new gear at blacksmiths to selling extra valuable you find on your requests that aren't the objective. Ultimately haggling comes down to a mixture of charm and understanding market value related to the object(s) in question. Knowing the market price for a specific monster hide will go a long way to help you get the best price for it, but the thing to keep in mind is fairness. You can maximize profits all you want, even seek for the cheapest price possible, but trying to screw over the buyer/seller will result in a horrible time for you.

Be fair in your judgement since merchants also need to make a living, don't expect to get things at production value or sell at the highest possible price unless you've managed to establish an excellent friendship or partnership. After all, contacts are more valuable than almost every Adventurer expects, few understand this even well into the higher ranks...

---

It doesn't take you long to finish the book, the information in going a long way to helping you even if you are sure actual practice is gonna be needed before you can go much further. Pushing it to the side, your hand reaches over and cracks open the book about Identification as you delve once more into the flow of reading.

---

Identification. Most people will live their entire lives without knowing what exactly it is, but understanding that high class Identifiers can receive stipends that would bankrupt small towns and receive recognition on par with some of the top Noble Houses. Identification is a facet of the System we all have, but rather than an automatic aid it is more akin to a form of magic utilizing the System. As most know the System is a creation of the Three Saviors who severed much of their connection to the mortal realm in order to grant the Free Realm the power to resist against the Demonic Incursion.

Identification is the act of obtaining an item or object's information in a format fitting for the System through manipulation of the inherent divine power inside of you which runs the System itself. It allows the user to understand the inherent traits of magical items, weapons, etc. on a level that formerly only craftsmen and great scholars could as well as in a much more effective/speedy manner.

In order to utilize Identification a wielder of the System has to first learn to sense the energy unique to the System and then propel it out of their body, into the item needing identification, and then back into their body...

---

You close the cover of the second book as a hand goes to rub your temples, your head hurting at the sheer oddity of this weird power called Identification. You of course know about the System, it is a gift from the Gods that lets one observe their own growth and more efficiently strengthen themselves as they grow in a manner that doesn't conflict with the Laws of the world. Of course, the reason your head hurts isn't the information about the System, but rather the potentially hidden features within if Identification also stems from it.

What else could the System be hiding, and why would the Gods keep it obscured from view?

It is a boon granted to those who seek to become like Lords, towering above the world with every action and word capable of bringing great waves of change. Currently it is weak and only grants you the power of Domination, but if you grow stronger and perform in a way that meshes with this Boon then perhaps its strength can grow.

Now no innocent souls shall be ended with this dangerous knife, but ... yours might be if you mess up? Slightly increased chance of learning stealth and thievery related skills until discovered, lost if the Sealed Scroll is destroyed.

Ethical Scholar - A scholar's duty is that of facts, numbers, honesty, and boundaries. You have a devotion to the work of the written word that few would follow in the face of potential benefits. Established personal Scholarly Code, sticking to it makes your work easier and better while going against it more difficult and with worse results.

Hrm. The System I imagine might well actually govern combat, be tied to, if not the source of, the powers granted to the Free Realm. And as for hiding it...I'm inclined out here to make the comparison to owning a computer or car. A complex device most people don't fully get, but can utilize in a limited fashion even without knowing the really cool tricks you can do. But that said, really cool tricks are important in their own right.
Incidentally? If we haven't already, we should definitely see about books about monster taming tips and tricks, if not on the subject itself. Mostly I'm thinking it might let us be prepared beforehand not only for any hazards and protocols associated with our minion, but also might give us clues to how our power of Dominion might vary from typical methods, seeing as our power is something granted to us directly from the God of War, which doesn't happen for everyone, to say the least.

So, what I'm getting from this chapter is that we are currently operating under a higher-tiered system than most everyone else. I'm going to all the one that everyone has the General System, while calling ours the Heroic System.

To look at the differences between them, I'm going to compare our stat sheet to the Vicious Rabbit's.

Alright, so the first major difference is that we can earn Heroic Legacy points but the rabbit doesn't, so that's getting filed under Heroic System.

The second is that we have an Abilities section and the Rabbit doesn't, thus making Abilities restricted to the Heroic System. Additionally, we didn't get an abilities section until we got access to the Heroic System.

The third difference is that the Heroic System doesn't seem to function on levels. We don't have a Heroic Legacy level, and the traits that we can get from the Heroic Legacy don't evolve over time as skills do. (This might or might not be disproved if/when we get a chance to check out the skills page of the Heroic System)

The Titles section also didn't appear until we got access to the Heroic Legacy system, and doesn't appear on our Rabbit's Stat Sheet, so that's most likely restricted to the Heroic Legacy system as well.

Another thing is that the rabbit doesn't have a percentage next to her skill anymore that signifies how much more she needs to do to reach the next level, whereas all of our skills have that. Uncertain if this means that being able to improve skills outside dedicated practice sessions is restricted to the Heroic System or not.

Well, this is all I can think of for now, but if anyone else has any ideas or clues or whatever, feel free to share them!

If we're pointing out differences between our stat sheet and the Rabbit's, the first thing I noticed was that her Health is tracked by a hard numerical value, whereas ours has been a narrative descriptor (Perfect, Battered and Bruised, and such). I don't think that's connected to our Heroic Spirit though, since it was already like that before meeting the God of War. I guess that's a difference between users of the Free Realm System vs Monsters of the Demonic Incursion? In which case that calls into question whether the differences between us and the Rabbit are actually representative of differences with other people's Systems.

True, but we have to consider whether or not monsters are part of the demonic incursion. I don't think they are, because the rabbit should have some kind of Infernal description in its stats. I think that the monsters of the Free Realm and the monsters of the Demonic Incursion are distinct. You'd think that the Church would be trying to eradicate the general monsters more if that was the case, but they're not. The Church is still manning the Wall, still fighting to keep the Demonic Invasion Force at bay. The monsters of the Free Realm have apparently been around long enough tat everyone knows what they are, and so if they were in fact Infernal then the land should be overrun, because that would mean that the Church would have lost the fight to keep the Infernal Legions at bay.

Thus, I believe that the Monsters of The Free Realm and the Infernal Legion are different from each other.

What other pieces of knowledge do you guys think is worthwhile to look up? We've just seen an indication of special abilities available in this universe, so I'd be interested in looking up more that are mentioned.

Meta wise it also makes sense to look up historic heroes throughout the ages and see just what their accomplishments are, or presumably at some point, one of them has written a book so we may get some extra understanding that way.

It is also kind of curious that the Guild operates and releases knowledge in a similar fashion to learning other things we can do with personal divine energy.

Something else we could is look up domination magic to get some experience towards that safely, then follow up with usng dominate writing on a piece of it and see just what happens.
