Booknerds all know the feeling of reading too much and forgetting basic functions. Obviously it'll unlock a special trait :V

@adwarf is this writin cool? I assume the bulk of those papers sitting around are invoices and receipts and the like.

I'd prefer to clean the office first given the state of it, as it shouldn't take too much time really. Then you can get down to work, or decide to snoop a little now that stuff is more organized. I can see us cleaning the office be something the owner appreciates too and would reward.

Honestly, I'm kinda skeptical about that. Because on the one hand, you're right, we might get thanked or an additional reward for cleaning up. On the other hand, someone explicitly told us to not touch anything other than what we need to work.

Plus, Larry seems like the kind of guy who'd get mad that we cleaned up and messed up his "system".

I absolutely hate it when people "organize" my space for me. If everything's arranged by someone else's system, sure it looks neat but then I don't know where the hell anything is, and what good is a system if I don't know what the logic is.

[x] Pay for a snack from the bar and ASK if we can clean the office first

Awesome thanks!
@veekie @Nevill just calling out a few people to see if anyone is interested in switching to my vote. I think the boss here already mistrusts Larry. Bringing up his obstruction immediately will only help us and give us a chance of really getting to the bottom of things.
I want to do this, but we can ask questions whenever we want so what say we get a little info first?

Might not be a good idea to tip anyone off to the idea that we're interested until we're out of options, because until now we haven't asked any questions so no one thinks they know what our opinions are and we haven't sided with anybody. Let's see if we can figure out what the trouble is based on the books first, so we can make as informed a decision as possible when we decide what, if anything, we want to ask.

That actually makes a lot of sense

After a moment of thought you turn around and head back down the hall to poke your out into the bar, the mountain of a man busy cleaning several glasses with a rag as you call out.

"Hey, do you think I can buy something to eat? Maybe a snack, didn't get a chance to eat since this morning."

A toothy grin spreads on the man's face as he sets the glass down and turns towards you,

"Absolutely, but don't talk bout buyin it. You came to double check my place's ledgers. Ain't a reason to pay. Go on back, I'll get Henry to bring ya some grub."

You give him a slight smile and nod before asking the most important question on your mind.

"Is it alright if I clean the Office while I'm at it?"

In response the man laughs, his beard shaking furiously in the process, before waving his hand to you.

"By all means go ahead, that is Larry's damned mess anyway. Teach him a lesson to not treat others places as his own."

You raise an eyebrow at that, would explain his spiteful attitude if he's disagreeing with the boss over things, but seriously... Who the hell raised this brat? It is mind boggling that someone could think and act like this kid is considering he isn't even the owner of the Inn. You return to the office while shaking your head and get to work moving the scattered piles of paper and notes into neat piles on the bookshelves, the books finding their way onto shelves separate from the loose papers under your hard work.

By the time you've finished straightening things up the room finally begins to look like an actual office rather than an elderly scholar's library, and quite on time as well as a knock soon comes from the doorway. Following it is a scruffy looking black haired man in a dirty chef's uniform - a plate of steaming potatoes, steak, and steamed Monstrous Corn kernels in hand. He seems surprised at the cleanliness of the room, but powers through it as he sets the plate down on the table along side a fork.

"Boss says it's on the house, told me to give you the works since you volunteered to clean this place up. Now, I really must get back to worry before the old bear comes back to kick me for running behind.

I'll leave you to it."

Huh... Much better impression compared to Larry, even if his looks were a bit all over the place, but what did it matter? You need to eat and get this work over with before it gets too late, don't want to be knife fighting a guy for an inn room or something moronic like that. With that in mind you sit down behind the desk, pull the plate of food over, and pop open the first ledger.

---

It is well into the night by the time you've finished your work, the numerous ledgers rewritten into two books with any errors well labeled as well as your theories on the relatively minor discrepancies that were clearly just deviations, user error, or wastage of goods. Your now empty plate is pushed to the side, a frown on your face as your sleep deprived eyes stare at the most important part of your work... a sheet of paper displaying an obvious trend in the ledgers that you are absolutely certain is some form of embezzlement disguised as surplus food costs...

How do you handle this?
[] Confront Larry about the embezzling.
[] Bring it to the attention of the big guy at the bar who you now realize is the owner.
[] Put the sheet in your bag and ignore the embezzling.
[] Write-in.

Show it to him, work him through the math, let him make his own judgments. While it might not be Larry (It's Larry) we shouldn't be the ones to say.
