Karaoke I
[X] See if a karaoke place is nearby
- [X] Main room

"Do you want to go back to Amy's now?" Satsuki stares out through the glass for a few more seconds before shaking her head.

"No. No, I … I don't want to bother her and the kids right now." You lean around her and look up brightly.

"Then shall we go … singing?" She blinks at you for a moment before laughing happily.

"Hehe. Yes, let's find a karaoke place. Um, you don't mind if I find out if one's nearby, do you?" You shrug and she sighs, relieved, then takes out her cell phone. You watch her curiously. "... Hello, Amy. No, everything's fine; we're almost finished with the aquarium. We both enjoyed it a lot. Thank you for finding it. Um, actually, we were thinking about staying out a bit later, and I was wondering if you knew if there were any karaoke places nearby." Satsuki smiles at you as she waits for Amy to say something. It's only a short time before she nods and smiles again, though. "Thank you, Amy! Hm? Ah, sure. She wants to talk with you, Flandre-sama." Frowning, you hold the phone up to your ear like Satsuki just did.

"Hello?"

"Ah, Flandre! Sorry to drop this on you right now, but Fate called about something and asked that I pass the information on to you pretty quickly. First, the Sankt-Kaiser's request is being dealt with, nothing serious in there. More importantly, uh, she said that you're being required to explain what happened with a certain tower. You'll be interviewed when you return to Mid-Childa, unless you'd prefer to send a report early." You scowl, but it is 'later'; you're honestly a bit surprised that you were allowed to go with Satsuki before having to explain things. And it wouldn't be that difficult to write it down, but then you'd be increasing the number of people who know about it … and if you aren't clear enough for their desires, you'll have to go to the interview anyway.

"I see. Thank you, Amy." Satsuki frowns worriedly, but you smile and shake your head. "Was there anything else?"

"No, that's it. Have fun, you two!" The phone clicks and you return it to Satsuki.

"Are we in trouble for something?" You shake your head again.

"No, the Bureau just wants me to explain something. Nothing for you to worry about. Is there a karaoke place nearby?" She nods, clearly not entirely convinced, but she turns and starts walking instead of trying to get you to explain further.

"Yes, maybe twenty minutes' walk from here - from the entrance to the park, anyway." She smiles and holds out her hand for you to take, like you were a little kid, and you sniff disdainfully before taking it. As tempting as it is to take off and fly, following her directions to get there faster, this is her vacation, so unless it's really important - or she asks - you'll follow her lead. And the walk does give you opportunities to ask her about little things, like the traffic lights and other things you see just walking around. Idle chatter, really, nothing of real substance, but Satsuki seems to enjoy thinking and remembering those little things.

The karaoke bar is actually a fairly respectable establishment, although from what you've seen of Amy that doesn't seem too out of character. Rather, you wonder how many lesser establishments you passed to get here. Situated on the corner of a block, the building is columnar instead of a cube, and while you can see that the upper floors have glass windows, you can't see through them, allowing some privacy for the occupants. A young woman, not too much older than Satsuki, greets you in a reception area. "Hello! Are you having a good night?" You both nod and her smile grows. "Ah, that's good, that's good. So, will you be joining the festivities in the main room, or would you like a private room?" Satsuki starts to respond, then looks a little nervously at you. It's her vacation, true … but it won't be that bad.

"The main room, please." The girl nods and turns a clipboard toward you and Satsuki.

"Alright. If you two would just sign your names, I'll get your bands." Satsuki hesitates, but signs her name anyway, then lets you write your name. "Thank you! Here you go, and one for you. There's a bit of an event going on - anime and video game night - so there's a competition. You don't have to participate; you can sing normal songs if you don't take up too much stage time. Menus are on the tables, please use the ringer if you need a server; they can also help if you have other questions about the operation. Please enjoy your visit!" She bows from behind the counter, and Satsuki reflexively returns the bow; you look at them for the barest of moments, then bow slightly as well.

"Thank you!" You follow Satsuki through the door and into the main area. It's actually partially partitioned, with a few areas out of view of the stage thanks to freestanding walls, but Satsuki takes a table on one of the mezzanines that can still see the stage. You suppose the wide variety of costumes are a result of the event - the two girls on stage, singing a song about Christmas, are wearing tight red and blue outfits that match their hair, and the only other table on your level has fake swords propped against the railing, all of which are much too large for normal humans to have used properly. "Hmm … is there anything you want to eat, Flandre-sama?" You shrug and look at the menu, but the dessert section is quite lacking. You do raise your eyebrows at the rather high prices, but then you see the notice: in order to sing, you have to pay a small fee, but each song allows you to get any one item, whether drink, dessert, entrée, or other. So if you just want to snack, the prices are high but not unbearable, but if you want a meal, it would be much cheaper to sing a few songs and pay that way. The lyrics to the song are displayed on the walls, presumably for the benefit of people who don't know the songs.

"Not right now. Hehe. … They aren't bad." Satsuki nods as the two girls finish their song and wave to the room to cheers and applause. They're replaced by a man wearing some kind of uniform, with a badge or headband across one eye. You're not sure if he's as bad at singing as it sounds, or if the mask is distorting his voice, or what, but you shake your head at his poor attempt. Satsuki chuckles and looks around the room.

What do you do?

[ ] Listen and chat for a while.
- [ ] About the Tohnos.
- Subject?

[ ] Play along with the event.

[ ] Try to get Satsuki to go on the stage alone.

[ ] You don't have to go along with the event.
- What song(s)?

DM Note: I did have thoughts about allowing choice of song for the event, but it is karaoke, wherein half the fun is watching people flail at songs they've never heard before, so playing along with the event will be a random song. I'll be using my own library, which is not the most expansive, but if you want to add selections, please limit yourself to three or less. Not going along, of course, I'll let you pick songs, so long as they aren't anime or video-game related.

I forget... What is this about a tower?

Flandre crushed a powerful magical structure like an egg from distance. Of course they are curious because that is like witnessing atomic bomb going off for us. I am curious what they will think about FLANDRE being a weapon of mass destruction actually. Her ability to just tear most things apart from moderate distance no matter how tough the target is is terrifying.

I for one wonder if some will think if Flandre is how she is if they learn she didn't train to get that power, she was born with it. If Flandre explains that much anyway.

Huh. But they aren't curious about the dragon she did the same thing to?

Maybe one of them was in an easier to observe location.

Honestly, I'm slightly surprised they want details. During Verossa's mind reading back when we contracted with the TSAB, we showed him memories of our life, including at least one instance of Breaking. Seems his report didn't go around, or it's the scale of what we Broke.

Regardless, whether in a report or interview, we can honestly mention that they knew from the start.

Personally, I want to write the report just so we can drily state something like
"After probing the tower's defenses, I judged that personal elimination would take unacceptably long considering the ongoing battle on Hroth. I met up with Enforcer Vita Yagami, then flew to minimum safe distance and behind cover. After letting her relay an advance warning, I proceeded to Break the tower.
For more details on Breaking, please refer to my initial interview with Investigator Acous Verossa, during which I showed him a memory demonstrating the technique."

An expansion on Flan's thoughts on the matter:

* Based on the circumstances of Flan's receipt of the information, it's possible that the demand came not from the Bureau, but from Vita. Fate is normally a stickler for protocol; this was given to you third-hand, incidentally to a different matter, and without any specifics regarding who is requesting the information or any specifics. This is only a possibility, and even the lack of a formal communication waiting at Amy's won't 'prove' it to be true, one way or the other, but it would explain discrepancies with the demand. If true, however, there's no real need to respond quickly or politely, and in any case Vita will be able to learn it soon enough in Gensokyo.

* By being vague with the demand, the Bureau may be giving Flan a loophole to avoid answering entirely and completely, or trying to catch her in a technicality somehow.

* The Bureau already has examples of Flandre breaking things: a building, Gadget Drones and Tre, and a dragon. By asking specifically about the tower, which did not have an observer apart from Vita or any observation equipment, the Bureau may be trying to prove a theory or hypothesis - if they think they have found a mechanism for Flan's attack - or they may be hoping that she will explain the mechanism to them, either of which would indicate that the Bureau may be trying to replicate the ability, or protect against it. If this is true, then a snarky response by letter would definitely result in an annoying formal interview, and quite possibly in a reduced chance for enjoyable activities.

Odds are good they're going to be finding ways to replicate it.

Karaoke II
[X] Play along with the event.

"And you, Satsuki? Are you going to order anything right away?" Satsuki looks at her menu before shaking her head. You smile and press the button to summon the server.

"Ah - you said …?" You nod and look down at the stage; most of the audience seems to share your disapproval of the man's attempt, although they are rather polite about it. "Oh." The man perseveres as a young woman approaches your table.

"You called for assistance?" You nod excitedly and lean toward her.

"Yup! So this karaoke thing, how do we do it? Do we go down there and talk to someone?" She blinks, seemingly taken aback by your interest, but after a brief glance at Satsuki she nods at you.

"No, all you need to do is press this button, then hold your wristband against the display -" You press the indicated stud and then hold up your wrist. After a moment the glossy screen turns green. "… Like that, yes. And that means that you've been accepted into the queue. When it turns blue that means you're the next singer, and if it turns red that means you're supposed to be on the stage. If you want to sing something with multiple people, all of you need to hold your wristbands up to the display. There's a waiting area down by the stage -" You hop up and look down.

"Where that person is?" You point at the pale-haired person, wearing casual normal clothes, sitting on a padded bench. The server nods.

"Yes. You can see what song you'll be singing down there, but once you enter the waiting area you aren't supposed to leave." As the badly-singing man finally steps off the stage, to much applause, the person waiting bounces off the bench and hurries up the stairs to the stage, taking a small stick from the wall. "There are two kind of microphones, hand-held like she's using, or the headset kind if you want your hands free. Ah, sometimes the people in the private rooms elect to participate, so there won't always be someone on the stage performing, so make sure you keep an eye on the indicator light." You watch the girl as she sings; she doesn't have the right voice for the song, and it's in English, but she does surprisingly well … but if it's the same 'Rules of Nature' song that Koakuma mentioned, you're not sure what to think about the familiar's taste in music. It is, mercifully enough, short, and you see the three men with exaggerated swords walk down to the stage as your light turns blue.

"And the balance between meals and songs is recorded on a computer, right?" The server's head jerks back to Satsuki, as if she'd momentarily forgotten your servant existed.

"Yes, that's right. If you become members, you can 'roll over' a certain number of performances per month …." She looks at you and Satsuki uncertainly, hand poised over one of her pockets, but after sharing a look with Satsuki you shake your head.

"I'm sorry, but we're only visiting for a few days." A ragged cheer sweeps the room as the music for the three men starts, and you cock your head at the incongruous spectacle. They aren't merely singing - and although they aren't really any good, they aren't nearly as bad as the other dressed-up performer - they also seem to be dancing. Something choreographed, given how well they know the moves. "Mmm … do I have to come back up here to do another song, or is there one of these things down there, too?" The server nods again.

"You do have to come back here, to help prevent people from monopolizing the stage. And if you do three songs in a row, unless there is at least a five-minute break between each song, you'll be locked out from performing for fifteen minutes." You scowl and she shakes her head. "Another establishment had an incident where someone tried suing the establishment after he damaged his voice by singing too frequently. Of course, nothing came of it, but it's easier to simply prevent such things. You also cannot request a song that has been performed within the last half-hour, to prevent individuals from getting into singing 'contests,' and no song can be sung more than three times within a single hour." You nod and she looks down at the stage. "Anyway, if you're going to be performing, you should get down to the stage. Hare Hare Yukai isn't that long a song." You bob your head and wave at Satsuki before darting down toward the stage. Instead of taking a seat on the bench - if the server was right, sitting would probably be a waste of time - you look around the area. The title of your song - Dear You - doesn't mean anything to you, of course.

More cheers erupt as the trio finish their performance, and you grin at them as they depart the stage. The one in the black robes looks slightly ill, but the ones with fake armor look pretty pleased and nod at you. "Good luck, young miss," says the one with outrageously-spiked hair, and you wave and bounce up the stairs, disdaining the 'microphones' - the room isn't so big that you can't make yourself heard, especially since you won't be prancing around. Maybe you can let Giltless do that? Satsuki waves, and you curtsy politely, just before the words to the song appear on the wall. Even with the characters lighting up as you're supposed to be singing them, it takes you an embarrassingly long time to get the timing down, but you think you did fairly well. More importantly, it's actually very nice to hear a piano again, and you fix the music in your mind; you'll have to play it when you get back to Mid-Childa. The message of the song, though ….

Muted applause rings out as the music fades away, and you curtsy again before making your way back to your table. Satsuki tries to smile at you, and you bow your head. "It's too bad they couldn't have picked a happier song," you say, but she shakes her head.

"It's fine, Flandre-sama. It was a happy song, anyway …." You open up the menu again, waiting for the next performance, and it happens to be someone in a private room, a girl singing, not too badly, a song about someone named 'JoJo'. You look down, but the waiting area is still empty.

"… I'm going to try singing something else, okay?" Satsuki blinks, drawn out of her introspection, and nods. You hold your wrist over the light and it turns green, then blue, and you look down to see a tall red-haired woman walking purposefully toward the stage. You hop onto the bench as she starts singing a bouncy song about an obsessively-loving sister. Your next song is something called Run for Your Life, which is probably going to disappoint you on at least one level. You extend an invitation to Headless and Giltless, but they seem to share your misgivings; Headless even sticks her tongue out at you. Oh, well.
