Out of curiosity, why do people like this? I've noticed that it was quite popular in the discussion, but I can't really see why.
We have roughly pre-first year hogwarts student level of understanding of local magic and layperson understanding of mechanics. Consequently, I am not all that worried about advanced stuff; we won't be asking for books on local magical quantum physics equivalent because we have four to three years of catching up to do before they are actually useful to us, and by then Vivian is simply a prodigy doing some advanced reading.
Honestly, I'm trying out a crit-system I've seen used for high-powered games. Basically, every time a roll ends with 100+ you subtract 100 roll another d100, add that to the total, and keep going until you stop. Success comes in degrees depending on how well you do.

For most people, physical appearance has a lot of subtle effects that help out in day to day life. As shallow as it sounds, knowing that you look good can be a major confidence boost for a person, and people are generally inclined to think well of attractive/well-groomed individuals. There have been a lot of psychological studies done on both of these topics, but it basically boils down to quirks of human psychology.
