Lack of food? Storms? Hostile animals? Hostile people? Landslides?

All of that, sans the hostile people and some of the tribe might have lost their nerve and split up due to the weirdness of the place. Which might have turned violent on a bad secondary roll.

Closed off valley with rivers! Yes! An excellent location to turtle up and boom, provided we get our feet under us. To that end:

Basics are indispensable so setting up camp and gathering food are musts. After that, exploring the valley is the best option, we have to know what we have in the first place if we want to make use of it. Double dipping food might be worth it later, but we must be careful... we don't want to make our wildlife extinct! Some early conservation tech would be sweet to research later on, so we can do it without risking an ecological collapse.

One thing I noticed in the update is that the mountains have goats and some kind of larger herbivore living in them; one thing we can pursue a little further on is trying to develop herds. The goats in particular, if we can domesticate them, would let us make use of the mountains and extend our periphery into them while also being more sustainable than hunting. That's something to keep in mind also if we're thinking about improving hunting practices.

And best of all -- they're not afraid of humans yet. The only problem is that domestication isn't a thing just yet. :(

Since I'm using a entirely custom map that has not even a passing resemblance to the real world, I've got to play it a bit loosely with the habitats of various things. You've settled in the vaguely European part of the world, thus it would probably be a bit hard to guess that the large bovines are yaks.

Note, double-dipping on food is different types of collection, hunting animals, and gathering herbs and berries. We effectively can't risk extinction, and in fact would benefit MORE from spreading our ecological impact as widely as possible until we develop proper agriculture and/or herding.

I am glad that these Civilization Games are catching on.
I'm voting to plan overview because it explores the general surroundings and gives us an idea about what is in the environment, be it other people, dangerous/useful animals, or interesting land formations.
It also lets us take advantage of Bold while it's still around, and gives off an air of exploring a new world, which is something that I like.

I'm voting to plan overview because it explores the general surroundings and gives us an idea about what is in the environment, be it other people, dangerous/useful animals, or interesting land formations.

Hunting also takes advantage of the cultural trait i thought? It effects Hunting at least.

It increases the likely hood of crit success or fails on hunting or exploitation, but it only gives buffs to exploration rolls.

Plus, I would prefer to encourage braving the unknown and exploring new places over hunting for the biggest game.
