Oglethorpe's dream: A Colony of Georgia quest

I don't know what to vote. Land of the Free is everything I want, but will cripple us economically for decades to come; while Wine for all but the Catholics will see the rise of bootlegging, and quite possibly organized crime as well, while also being needlessly antagonistic towards Catholicism. Both approaches are seriously flawed, thus my hesitation.

It's a nice dream... but I'm a realist at heart. Dreams don't come true just because you wish for them real hard. They require blood, sweat, tears, and yes, veritable mountains of gold to make things happen, and outlawing slavery all but cripples us. For we are not yet a nation true, our neighbors not friends, but competitors seeking to edge us out in ever-shifting games of trade and commerce. We are on our own Thule, and we have no one but ourselves to rely on.

I feel like Bootlegging and crime would be easier to handle then crippled economy. Plus we can go slave free once the economy, and the nation, can handle it.

Well free slave will be not without problems once people are accustomed to this, and remove will creat economicas andl socials upset? See the american civil war.

Hard liquor won't necessarily result in bootlegging, sonny! Just drink beer!

Also, the Catholics are traitors who serve the far off Pope and indulge their sins in the pretense that paying a bit of money to him will cleanse them of them. Loyal, hardy protestants are the only proper citizens of our young colony.

You are outlawing the production of an intoxicant, and you don't think that will lead to bootlegging? I'm afraid History would like to have a word with you...

Afaik the Prohibition was against the sale of ALL alcohol, except those wines the churches needed for their sacrament, was it not? In which case people had no recourse for the intoxicant that is alcohol other than bootlegging. If you still provide a means of intaking alcohol, albeit in a more diluted form, bootlegging will be rendered more costly than not. Furthermore, the decrease in widespread and severe addiction, abuse domestic or otherwise, accidents, and mood effects that decreased access to hard liquor would cause is a major boon. One that is quite worth the small rise in crime that is, in itself, a source of income as a result of punitive fees.

This is going to be one interesting colony.
 
Well, this is going to be... interesting.

I foresee a hell of a lot of problems ahead of us. Especially since our neighbouring colonies are basically going to be aggressively 'if you weren't a colony under the control of the same nation we'd be at actual war' with us, due to the fact that any slave escaping over our borders is going to be freed... Well, that or they aren't going to be freed and we're going to have riots or a lot of 'indentured servants that definitely AREN'T slaves but look like it' and corruption in the colony.

    Although religious toleration was beginning to emerge as a value during the Enlightenment, it was the pragmatic need to attract settlers that led to broad religious freedoms. South Carolina wanted German Lutherans, Protestant Scots and Jews as a counter to the French and Spanish Catholic absolutist presence to the south, which was perceived as a threat to their English freedoms.

    This is one reason that relations between South Carolina and Georgia were strained from the very start. South Carolina could not comprehend why Georgia would allow Catholics. Further souring relations was the fact that the Very cream of South Carolina society was opposed to Georgia on principle. To them it was injustice that the Crown take away land from South Carolina and give it to make a new colony. While the Plantation owners were also worried about run away slaves as all slaves had to do was swim the Savannah river and they'd be free.

    But anyway enough with bickering neighbors let's get to how the Georgia Colony and Savannah are doing.

    One of the most crucial elements to the prosperity of Savannah and Georgia was Oglethorpe's friendship with Tomochichi. He granted Oglethorpe permission to settle on the Yamacraw bluff. As a result Georgia and Savannah did not have to deal with a war with the Yamacraw Tribe a subsection of the Creek Tribe when they first settled.

    Prior to arrival in the New World Oglethorpe had developed as sophisticated plan on how to design the city of Savannah. Oglethorpe laid the city out in a series of grids that allowed for wide open streets intertwined with shady public squares and parks that served as town meeting places and in the future could be good centers of business.

    The prosperity of Savannah presented another problem. When people founded or moved to Georgia they were promised 100 acres if they paid there own way or 40 if they were paid for by the Trustees to come over. Now that the survival of the colony was not at risk people wanted there promised land.

    A reasonable request the only problem Oglethorpe had no system for distribution of land.

    You can write the votes like this:
