Hello Sufficient Velocity I'm going to be running what I hope will be a successful quest now. I've had this in my head for about three months.

Here's how this quest will work you the readers will be the Government of The Colony of Georgia.

Not as the governor or the legislature but as the entire government of the colony of Georgia. You will run the Colony at first as Oglethorpe and his 21 trustees. Then if you see fit you can reform yourself into something different to govern the Georgia colony with the Crowns permission.
Now without further ado I give you Oglethorpe's Dream.

THE FOUNDING OF GEORGIA
It had been more than five decades since the British had established a new colony. James Edward Oglethorpe, a philanthropist and an English general, along with twenty-one other men, created a charter to settle a new colony which they named Georgia in honor of King George II. The grant established land between the Savannah and Altamaha rivers as well as the waters of these rivers.

Georgia's Trustees, Oglethorpe and the twenty-one other men, established that no man was to make profit off the settlement. Once the charter was finalized the men brought it to the attention of King George II. In 1732, King George II, under the persuasion of Oglethorpe, signed off on the last of the 13 colonies.

At the time of the charter, British prisons were being over-crowded by people in debt. Oglethorpe spent much of his time in England working with the poor and insisted that the formation of a new colony would allow debt-ridden people a fresh start. His idea was to create an asylum for the poor and the persecuted Protestants. The establishment of Georgia would also protect the northern colonies from Spanish and French intrudors.

Though this was all well and good what mattered the most to King George ll was the charter which Oglethorpe and the 21 trustees labored over let's take a look at it shall we.

After the King approved the charter of Georgia Oglethorpe started preparing for the founding of the Georgia colony. Deciding he would personally go with the settlers.

So on November of 1732, 114 people left from the River Thames to settle Britain's new colony of Georgia. They arrived at Port Royal, South Carolina. While the colonists rested, Oglethorpe, Peter Gordon, William Bull, and several other South Carolina militia searched for a proper settling area. They came to Yamacraw Bluff, which was about seventeen miles from the Savannah river's mouth. The men chose this area for its natural protection from assault.

There they met John Musgrove, son of a South Carolina Governor, and his wife Mary, native Creek Indian. The two lived near Yamacraw Bluff and traded goods with the Creek Indians. With Musgrove's help, Oglethorpe was able to obtain the land from the local Creek village leader Tomochichi. Upon securing the land, Oglethorpe returned to South Carolina to gather up the settlers.

[X] To allow slavery with heavy restrictions on how you can treat a slave.

We're currently a pre-industrial agrarian colony right now, so we won't be economically competitive without slavery of one form or another. That said, the idea here is to allow slavery with some caveats to better pave the way for emancipation as we grow less and less reliant on unskilled labor to remain economically viable.

[X] To allow all alcohol no matter the strength.

Have you heard of the Prohibition before? Yeah, this is a bad idea all around, and a good way to create a tradition of organized crime that we do NOT want in our colony.

[X] People can only own up to 100 acres.

Head those monopolies off at the pass, otherwise you'll get speculators buying up huge swathes of land on the cheap and selling it back at a premium.

[X] Women can own land and hold any type of property.

*shrugs* No good reason not to allow this.

[X] No they meant for this to be a society of equals.

They have coin and bodies fit for labor, why the hell would we turn them away?!

[X] No we must not let the fears of some corrupt our society.

See above.

[X] No they have many skills we need.

Again, see above. The only reason one would ban a people or group of peoples is to get in good with the other colonies so as not to be seen as filthy papists/heathens, etc. But I'd much rather our colony be the beating heart of industry in the area then a part of some proto-American good 'ole boy's club.

Quick question, on a scale of 1 to 10 how much do you guys think we need Slavery? Dropping it would be a bit of a gamble, but if we make allowances for people of all races/genders to join the workforce that massively increases the number of potential workers we can call on. Is it enough to replace Slavery without costing us a veritable fortune? I honestly don't know, but I'm hoping somebody out there does.

For reference everything in pink is what we will likely come to control in the immediate future though our claim goes all the way to the pacific.

If we want to have an economy we need slavery but we could make do without it so an 8 out of 10

Forgot slavery question

Heh, a friend of mine is trying to talk me into setting us up as a colony of pirates, and I gotta say it's a fairly tempting idea...

Umm....NO sorry I try to have as little QM interference as possible but Britain would not allow one of there colonies to go pirate so I'm just going to kill this in its cradle again sorry but realistic Quests are very important to me.

Slavery is just common sense, but to mistreat one of God's creatures is anathema to His will and thus to the prosperity of our venture.
Hard liquor is the devil's juice and the devil is the father of abuse, poor decisions, and misery. Ban it, except for the possession of those surgeons who need it to prevent disease. Beer and wine, though, make for a good time and proper observance of Jesus Christ's sacrament. Plus, some people gotta drink. Better to keep 'em lookin' for somethin' light than brewin' somethin' hard.
People should only own what land they themselves can personally oversee, which is enough to feed them, their family, and a good helping of those who make a living through their learning and tools rather than their cows and crops. That this also keeps out rich escaping nobles and saves us trouble down the line is coincidence. ;)
Women can own and do what they want, mine sure does. Heh, heh.
Fuck the Catholics and their goddamn tainting of His own Words and the loyal citizens of our colony and our home land toward the whims and whiles of the damned Italians' damned Pope. Can't trust 'em, and I ain't going to settle a new land with those I can't trust.
Blacks are fine by me. The earth darkens the hands of all those who work it.
Jews are good too. Kindly and clean folk, well-read. Give 'em their space and they'll give you their wisdom.
