"Gnatia is a tiny city and while it will make a splendid southern buffer it will not safe the Messapii from Taras, Besides, putting Ostaron on the throne does not prevent it from continuing to support Daxtus against Taras. Further, these lands are for one, empty, and for another formerly Peuketii. What we seize here is of absolutely no importance to the Messapii. Their loss will please our allies and not particularly weaken the Messapii. I say take it and let those who dispute our actions taste the sharp end of our spears!"

It's in flux. Your prowess in combat is appreciated but many of the Italiote cities do not like Herodion's methods and behavior, seeing it as barbaroi influence and disrespect to the Gods. The Metapontines are split between seeing as staunch allies and manipulators. Rhegion is appreciative but distant.

Also, since IA1 asked me, it is possible to lend material support to Daxtus in the form of a 10-20 talent per turn subsidy of his forces. However, this option is blocked off if you choose to seize the northwest lands. It is not blocked off if you simply make Gnatia a tributary.
 
[X] USER MOTION - Eretria shall supply Daxtus with 10 Talents per year in support to sustain his war with Taras, and a significant hint that we really do quite like Ostaron and maybe if he could see his way to doing something about Arsenon we'd be really happy...

EDIT:
To make this explicit, the goal is that Daxtus will remove all support from Arsenon, ideally arranging for him to die in the fight with Taras, while we install Ostaron unopposed, and without any notable civil strife to create lasting bad blood in Gnatia.

We have no reason to wish Taras to win this war, making Daxtus an ally benefits us long term, and having him agree that Gnatia is clearly and permanently in our sphere is the best manner to secure our south.

This is an acceptable write-in, but precludes the option of making Ostaron a tributary (because he doesn't need to rely on you to take the throne), and will simply restore Gnatia's alliance. And of course it doesn't involve seizing the northwest.

That's fine. I'd rather we take our time to woo Daxtus and the Messapii than kick them while they're down for immediate advantage.
 
Or... hmm. @Cetashwayo, could we offer to buy the former Peuketii lands off Daxtus in return for a subsidy payment/offering a lump sum of cash?

He doesn't particularly need the land anyway, he gets the money he needs to fund his war with Taras, and Harpos gets the land he wants. Win-win.

No. It's a loss of face and buying land is not very common in this period. Most stories of land purchases are from foundational myths of colonies, and usually involves tricking the natives through guile and wit.

Having Daxtus sustain his rule through sucking at the Eretrian teat is almost as good for our long term purposes.

[X] Write-in: Provide a subsidy of 10 talents a year to Daxtus, for as long as he continues to be at war with the Tarantines. In return, secure his agreement not to interfere in the politics of Gnatia.

To be clear, this user motion works like a regular write-in. Just vote for it, and if it has the most votes out of all the options, it wins.

He's already conceded Gnatia to us. They're not part of his confederacy and he doesn't care if we claim them as a tribute. Totally on board with funding him (for whatever it'll do), though. Also, we should be the ones to place Ostaron on the throne, not Daxtus, as then he'd be indebted to Eretria, not Daxtus.

As asked in the discord, A Gnatian tributary would net you an extra 3.5 talents a turn and easier access to the Gnatian levies, another ~350 men or so.
