Keep our vassals happy and our enemies Weak. Eretrians are bold and good at war. Let us be bold then and let us indulge in war.

So says Mikeletos.

Hmmm... Given that the Messapii have their hands full repelling an angry and indignant Taras, perhaps now is indeed the best time to carve out a piece of their realm, even with the bulk of our levy on campaign in Sicily. It is definitely a high risk strategy, but right now it looks like Daxtus coalition is set to fall apart, and using the chance to secure our southern flank and reward a great ally that has been amazingly useful in our campaigning sounds like the Eretrian Thing to do. After all, High Risk High Reward is our thing.

What i am most worried about right now is Taras breaking the Messapii before their blood lust is sated, and coming up north to take a swing at us while our army is in Sicily. While i am confident that our fortifications can repulse a barbaroi army, a Greek one is another thing entirely? Especially with Korinthian ships in port and our seawalls unfinished. That, however, actually sounds like an argument for placing Ostaron on Gnatias throne and seizing the Northern Messapii lands. Having to raze Gnatia or risking an Eretrian ally in their back might dissuade Taras from trying anything.

Also we really need to hope that our war with the other greek cities is over soon, we are taking far to many casualties.

[X] Allow the alliance with Gnatia to lapse under Arsenon and accept his rule. We must not get entangled in this web while war still looms in Sicily and Italia.

Fellow citizens,
I urge you to remember that we promised the Messapii peace on two occasions. First, at the Groove of Artemis and again when they let us aid our fellow Ionians unhindered.
Also, should we choose to join the attacks on the Messapii then they will surely fall to Taras. I say we must not allow Taras to subjugate the Messapii! Some might say this will secure our southern flank, but I warn you that this would only strengthen our real rival to the south. We have had an amicable relationship with Daxtus so far, I say let us build on this. For he will be a useful ally and buffer against the hostile polis of Taras. He will be grateful to us for letting him fight this war undisturbed. I dare say that this is our best chance to diplomatically secure our southern flank. For there is not great love between Daxtus and Arpus and should the former come to trust Eretria he can surely be convinced to stay out of our future struggles with the Dauni.

I find the idea that we are breaking the peace with the Messapii through this move unconvincing. Not even any Barbaroi goatherders ply their trade in the wasteland between Eretria and Gnatia. There are only ruins - and ruins of Peuketii temples and cities, at that. What care does the warlord Daxtus have for land that does not supply him wealth nor warriors? Why should we not return their ancestral land to our steadfast allies?

If we invade his northern lands and force the men of those lands to return home, then his army will surely lose strength and cohesion.

What men? The area we wish to take is filled with Peuketii ruins and barren and empty. There aren't many men and the region is more important to Harpos than Daxtus.

Let our enemies know our cruel, closed fist, bound in bronze, spear and shield held aloft.

Let our friends know our open palm, spilling forth with grapes and good wine and grain and fish. Harpo is our friend, Gnatia is our friend.

Right?

Daxtus has dealt honestly, for a barbaroi, with this city and is the enemy of mighty Taras. It would ill serve the polis to make it easier for the Tarantines to break the Messappii right now, and to break a sacred oath to Artemis when we know by the slaying of mighty Antipater that the gods are looking upon our conduct intently.

We should find another way to reward our friend Harpos, with talents as well as plunder in freely-given gift. And perhaps we might discuss with Daxtus the allowance of his northern lands to be put into productive use. Or seize them if they break our truce, but at some more promising time.

There are at least 350 men of Gnatia in his army. I expect the total number he would lose to an invasion by us to be around 500. That is a not insignificant amount when he is already engaged with Taras.

Did Gnatia even march for him? I thought a major concern for him was the fact Gnatia wasn't under his command.
