Something we might want to consider and probably address at least briefly in our vote is how we want Koharu to play into whatever we say here, and how to best communicate our desires to her (preferably, while avoiding obvious extensive telepathic conversations under Konno's eyes). Do we want her to back us up? Aggressively pick apart whatever Konno says for flaws and ulterior motives, as she appears to be defaulting to? Run some kind of good-cop-bad-cop bit where Yui is nice about everything and Koharu is skeptical, so that Yui appears reasonable and worth working with by contrast? Something else?

If we coordinate with Koharu properly we can get a serious advantage in negotiations because she's both good at socialing and has magical powers which will be actively putting Konno off balance by dragging her attention to Koharu in ways that she likely didn't expect and wasn't prepared for. But if we don't coordinate at all or account for what Koharu will be thinking/saying we could end up worse off than if we'd come alone, because Konno likely would not have a hugely difficult time fracturing our currently-unified social front if we're not coordinating at all.

And aside from that, part of the reason that we brought Koharu was to make her feel like she's being valuable and doing something helpful, as well as like working with Yui is intrinsically rewarding (and hopefully even enjoyable). If we can swing this so that she's acting as part of a coordinated effort instead of deciding where and how to pitch in on her own it's likely to be more effective as far as team-building efforts go. Ideally once this meeting with Konno is over we'll be able to turn to Koharu and go "We are a Dynamic Diplomat Duo and this was so much easier with you here! I'm really glad you were able to come!" and have her feel all warm and fuzzy about it. We can probably make that happen with some relatively small adjustments to the votes being written here.

I included a line about coordinating with her in my vote. Would you prefer some more specific direction, or...?

Specific negotiations of the kind SWB was talking about and the various branches of my vote were talking about can wait until we've established our position, I reckon.

And this was, indeed, my reasoning for truncating my vote there instead of continuing on - I want to hear Konno's response first instead of autopiloting through it.

I mean, isn't that built into Plan Less of a Jerk already? What am I missing here?
Well, that's not the only plan on the table. It does do a better job than most. As far as its specifics go, what it says is...
[ ] Keep both Koharu and Maiko on a shared line, to coordinate responses and keep getting info.
and later
-[ ] While Koharu's assessment may be "uncharitable", that doesn't make it unfounded. Having girls in Nagamioka who don't ultimately answer to you reduces your claim to the city as a whole - and you refuse to let your city devolve into another Tokyo. That's something that'll have to be adressed in any arrangements you make.
So it definitely means coordinate with her, which is good, but it doesn't lay out a strategy for what that coordination will actually consist of. Is Koharu meant to be making any of the points laid out in the plan, or leaving that to Yui while waiting for Konno to respond and attacking/giving opinions on her responses? The second bit implies the latter- that is, that we're relying on her to continue being uncharitable so that we can then go "that's a good point, let me say it's right but be nicer" without explicitly saying so- but it's not actually explicit or clear about any of that so that could easily be reading too much into it.

I mean, Yui and Koharu can probably improvise playing off one another fairly well since they're both socialite types. We don't need to put anything more than this has already. That said, the level of coordination actually described here here basically has them defaulting to figuring out how to coordinate an effective social strategy entirely themselves instead of having us make the call on it, so if we think that there's any particular conversational play likely to be a particularly good bet to use we should say what it is.

Edit: Also we need to remember that Koharu's personality and what we know about her wish means that we cannot expect her to stay quiet while Yui makes speeches. She has to be a major participant in the conversation because her motivation and magic demand that she draw attention and not allow herself to be ignored.

The thing is, Yui is better at social than me. (And just about all the other voters here.) I trust her to come up with a workable approach more than I trust any particular plan that I've come up with (and I did consider a few). If a particular social strategy with Koharu is proposed that I very much like, I'll include it in the vote - until then, I'll leave it to Yui.

That's fair enough. I'm just remembering that we've had coordination failures in this quest based primarily on the assumptions that people would act appropriately independently before- specifically, when we fought Hisae's group after the initial plan had been executed Tomo basically froze up, crippled by uncertainty and inexperience. While this is certainly not a battle, it's still working with someone that we've never worked with before in a reasonably tense situation, and while it's entirely possible that it'll turn out fine it's also entirely possible that leaving things unstated will result in coordination not going as smoothly as we'd hope.

That said, Koharu is not Tomo, and she's got experience with social situations in general. She'll be driven to act rather than sit back, so any errors are likely to be a result of her expressing opinions that conflict with ours rather than standing back when we need her to step up.

Potential new vote, awaiting review before being edited in as official.

-[] Attempt to coordinate with Koharu via telepathy. Koharu will play 'bad cop', and continue to act suspicious and probe for weaknesses In Konno's statements/logic/negotiating position/etc.. Koharu, knowing Yui intends to recruit and protect these girls, wants to make sure they are trustworthy even before Yui mentions the desire outloud, explaining her suspicious attitude. Koharu will eventually bring up how Konno's actions will likely cause a fracture within her group or even an outright coup, which Yui will be surprised about and be very unhappy with.
--[] Yui will play the good cop, who wants everybody to get along well and safe. Yui will attempt to avoid sounding naive, but will make her feelings clear on the subject of recruiting others for their own good and so she can better protect both them and the city (from witches and invaders). Yui will naturally be distressed at the underhanded tactics Konno is displaying, but will make an attempt at forgiveness given the potential direness of Konno's situation. Yui will argue for honesty, openness and full disclosure going forward into the negotiations.

-[] We intend to recruit Konno and the others fully into Yui's swiftly expanding harem team, both for the benefits to the team and because we intend to keep those girls alive. Yui believes she can best do so as their direct leader and protector. Yui understands that a gradual approach is sometimes necessary, and so is willing to agree to lesser measures in the interim (such as a land lease), with the understanding of recruitment down the line. This is regardless of whether Konno agrees to be recruited; all shall fall to Yui's charm in the end (jokingly or just internal thoughts)! Yui provides the condition that her contribution not be the direct or indirect cause of such strife that the recruitment of other members of the team becomes impossible. This means no coup, no fractured team. If no lasting deal can be created without causing irreparable strife within the team, then we will only agree to more temporary measures such as a short loan of seeds until more open negotiations can occur.
--[] Yui asks about Konno's original intentions in arranging this meeting, and if, after Yui's own goals are made clear, Konno's intentions are the same. Yui attempts to accommodate Konno's goals so far as they do not conflict with her own goals of protection and eventual recruitment. Where there are disagreements, they attempt to find a middle ground.

[] "Shina Konno. Your eyes can see the weaknesses of others. I wonder what they see about me? That'll have to wait for another time though.
-[] "I understand the situation you're in. I understand that you feel you have to go behind your group's back to survive. You've done it before, after all, and here you are still living.
--[] "I detest that sort of underhanded manipulation. I hate the backstabbing politicking that is so common in Tokyo. But I understand the necessity, on occasion, so I won't hold your past actions against you. Starting from this point on, let's be clear and honest about what we both intend to gain from this meeting, okay? I'll even go first! :)"

Do... do the likes count as approval of this iteration of my plan as it is? I was kinda hoping for written confirmation and/or suggestions, but I wanna go get lost in a video game or two...

I'm just gonna edit it in and disappear. Old plan in the spoiler above if you need it for some reason. Ciao.

Edit: Oh wait I almost forgot to actually do the thing. Almost.

I do think that this iteration of your plan is stronger than the original. That said, I mostly gave it a like because I approve of people being willing to put in the work required to actually think about and write up decent plans, then review and improve them, on general principle.

My personal opinions on it... well, my biggest objection is I don't actually mind if we fracture their team as long as we're not responsible for killing any of it. It's not as though the team breaking up means death; girls can and do change teams all the time and we've effectively set a precedent already that we're willing to facilitate the movements of girls between different Tokyo groups by what we did with Kaede. We don't necessarily need to recruit everyone and it's not an ideal statement to make that we aren't willing to do anything which would prevent us from doing so; some people just might honestly not be a good fit for Nagamioka (I would argue who specifically, but that's kind of beside the point here) and in that case our objective should be to see them peacefully join other teams that they can fit with.

I'm not sure if that's a major point of principle for you or merely incidentally included in your choice of language.

I think I like redzonejoes plan more now, being more inclined towards full annexation as an end goal myself.

  • [x] Plan Less Of A Jerk
[X] Plan Delightfully soft, and yet still firm.
[X] You know what position her group is in perfectly, in fact. You're sympathetic - being short of Grief Seeds and stuck in the middle of an imploding group must suck.
[X] The thing is, though, that despite the fact that you're well aware of her reasons for going behind her group leader's back this time, this isn't the first time. And this kind of behaviour tends to tear apart groups violently.
[X] You're perfectly willing to make a similar deal to the one she suggested (though perhaps less tied to the territory itself), with her group, but not at the cost of bringing bullshit Tokyo politics into it, if at all possible. That's counterproductive to the stability you're trying to build, within Nagamioka and without.
[X] Does she have any way of addressing your concerns?
[X] Possible alternative proposals; What are her thoughts on them?
-[X] Convincing Furuhata to come talk to us and listen when we tell her about her group's problems and how we would like to help. Does Konno think it's possible, and is she willing to possibly forfeit her shot at leadership and still help if the problems can be worked out that way?
-[X] Ask Maiko if Konno could be trusted to become part of our intel group and behave herself, and if we could integrate the other personalities. If yes, also offer a full annexation of the entire group.
[X]This arrangement seems loosely amenable so far, so lets get down to the brass tacks of the agreement.
-[X]Konno knows we are an Aikawa, so we should demonstrate that. Tell her that we will lease the territory for some agreed upon time with a few conditions, for now with a more open ended agreement for after the first lease ends
--[X]The duration of the initial lease should be for no more than 2 months for now, and no less than 2 weeks
-[X]Start negotiations at 50/50 split of GS collected, but be willing to move as far as 40/60 of the GS collected, in their favor.
--[X]if pressed argue that Witches are especially abundant presently, and that the relatively short duration of the lease will allow for renegotiation of terms as the situation changes with more simplicity
-[X]Yui's group must be notified of all magical girls that enter or are in the lease territory, and a member of Yui's group must be present for any meetings with such magical girls. Our fluffy Mephistopheles is currently on a recruiting spree through Nagamioka, and we want to prevent any unfortunate accidents.
    [X] Plan Work-study Program
-[X] You know what position her group is in perfectly, in fact. You're sympathetic - being short of Grief Seeds and stuck in the middle of an imploding group must suck. However, you really need to not go behind her leader's back on this. Suggest she act as a go-between and bring an offer to Furuhata. Get her leader to at least meet telepathically - or preferably in person with whoever she wants to bring - to hammer out details. She can claim we contacted her or whatever if she wants, as long as she gets that meeting for us.
-[X] Suggest that you could take on problem children from her group as a sort of trial period. Attach them to existing groups in your territory. They can hunt well, as long as they are willing to do it using the guidelines and patrol routes you've worked out for optimal hunting. A third of every gem they acquire could be sent back to the Tokyo group as a sort of loaner fee. If things don't work out, you send them back none the worse and with a few new Grief seeds under their skirts. The name of the game is friendly relations and efficient cooperation/collection of Grief seeds.
--[X] Chizuka - or Tsurumi, but probably not both - could do well under Yumi or Koharu.
--[X] Tamazaki or Miyu or Konno herself could do well under your aegis personally, or possibly the Gundam trio. So that, frankly, you could keep an eye on Tamazaki or Konno with the understanding that if they start farming familiars or backstabbing the group you will come down on them like a ton of pink bricks.
--[X] Heck, Furuhata and Oshigiri could potentially hold down their own territory in Nagamioka or their current location so long as they were willing to pay heed to us, their adorable overlord.
-[X] You'll check in with the relevant Nagamioka groups as necessary. We want any group's input before we stick them with a new member, and to address their concerns properly.

I don't necessarily want to recruit everybody. I'm content with the occasional Kaede situation, where we see them off peacefully with another group and we don't need to deal with their crap anymore.

Problem is that this process is actually a bit involved, it requires knowing both the girls we're seeing off safely and the group that's adopting them, to some extent, otherwise we might just be creating problems. Yui and the thread at large have come to a sort of unofficial understanding, back when we chose not to kill Kaede. There was a lot of discussion about morality and ideals and how Yui intends to run things. While I was fine with a bleaker outlook on things, the eventual consensus was that Yui would try to save everybody, even ratbags like Naomi. Yui wouldn't kill just because it's convenient. Yui also wouldn't just ship a girl off in a box to india, or kick a girl across the bridge with no seeds food or allies, because these sort of actions are basically indirectly killing them. We also couldn't just release people like Kaede and Naomi out into the wild together with a couple seeds and a stern warning because they'd inevitably cross others, and the blood on their hands would reflect off of our own as well.

With that kind of mindset, with the goal of saving everybody and the attitude that neglect is as good as death, with Yui trying to take the weight of the world on her shoulders...

This kind of attitude the thread now has towards poaching only the best girls and leaving the rest is mind-boggling. I didn't agree with the push towards impossible idealism, but the decision has been made and so I'm willing to stand by it. Apparently more so than anybody who actually pushed for the concept. We, that is, Yui, wants to save them all. That means we must at least temporarily recruit them all, because the alternative is trusting that those suspicious sods who refuse to join us are capable of taking care of themselves when all the evidence suggests incompetence, ignorance and an early grave for anybody left behind after a deal like this.

People seem to have this idea that all recruits must be friends, and we have to take the time to get to know them all, and the story will be bogged down with trying to manage 40 characters at once, when in reality we can recruit them without ever having to lay eyes upon them or speak to them. We can give them a plot of land to control, we can organise through maiko or yumi or whoever to optimise patrol groups and split apart personalities that clash. There's no reason not to recruit them aside from negligence and willful ignorance of Yui's self-imposed responsibility to be the hero everybody in this system needs.

And if, ultimately, we learn that one or more of them are utterly incompatible with our leadership? Something we have no way of knowing beforehand, btw, given we've hardly even talked to any of them... That's when we do as we did with Kaede, and find a nice, stable group to adopt them, content that they're no longer under threat of imminent death. A group that we'll keep our eyes on, and be willing to help, and probably eventually integrate into our kingdom anyways because delegation and expansion and ideals.

This is very much true.

The act of breaking an existing team lays the responsibility for what happens with them next on your shoulders, indirect as it may be. There are also other factors in play. If we think a girl is 'not worth keeping' (other than because of an impossibility of coexistence) for us who can actually handle some inefficiency, why would you think anyone else would welcome her? Or what happens when there is a local on the team as there often are, do we start running girls out of their homes to optimize?

Taking their teams with their land is probably the cleanest solution... their own territory already provides some Grief Seed income, so we only increase the load on our territory by a couple of girls as we sort out the incompatibilities within the existing team and leave them to live pretty much as they did, but under our supervision and without the pressure of the constant fight for survival and for leadership to ensure said survival.

That said, @Redshirt Army, your vote appears to be in the solid lead, but can you explain to me in layman's terms what do you actually propose? There is a lot of talk of what we don't want to do, but very little about what we do. As far as I could understand, you want to bring the offer via the official channels to Furuhata... and suppose it succeeds, then what are your plans for the group? Am I correct that you do not have any offer for Konno except for providing a temporarily relief for her group, and leave the decision of the course of action for the future?

If I had to sum up Delightfully Soft, it'd be 'you help me keep your entire team stable and in working order while convincing them to join, I'll back you up'. What is your pitch?

I feel that these comments should not go unchallenged.

First, while some poaching has been discussed, that's not what the idea behind the proposed deal was - and the deal is not even in the leading vote, because we're trying to establish our position on Konno's coup plan. The idea Konno proposed was that Furuhata's group would essentially relocate some of their members who are currently not a good fit into leased territory. SWB proposed something more like an exchange program instead, which has gotten a lot of support in-thread. It's not a recruitment, though it could become one later. What it does do is help deal with a situation that could result in a group implosion and dead girls, and help build a rapport between Yui's group and members of Furuhata's.

Second, I can't deny there's a tendency to go for friendship building actions, and I suspect this will continue for a while. And honestly, it's been the appropriate choice so far, because Yui's group is still quite small. It's ideal for them to have a close support network and friends among the Nagamioka girls, as well as personal loyalty to Yui. I disagree with your assertion that we must necessarily try to recruit all the girls, even temporarily - moreover, even if that becomes a necessity later, there are a number of arguments against doing it now that have been brought up.

Third, it's entirely possible to make a reasonable guess about whether someone is not compatible with Yui's leadership. For instance, if she's complicit in their group breaking up, and makes a recruitment pitch immediately after. That's an easy way to build resentment. Giving Konno the means to launch a coup could easily get someone in the group killed, which is bad, let alone utterly messing up any later recruitment efforts.

As far as I could understand, you want to bring the offer via the official channels to Furuhata... and suppose it succeeds, then what are your plans for the group?

That depends entirely on both Konno's reaction to us establishing some ground rules and clarifying our position, as well as what later evidence suggests we can get away with when talking to the leader. I'm not opposed to any of the options that end up with the girls acting under our direct authority, up to and including annexation if we can suggest it diplomatically.

Now, these specifics aren't actually in my vote, but that's 100% intentional - I straight up do not want to suggest specific proposals right now, both because I want to tailor my approach based on the upcoming update instead of putting it on autopilot, and because hashing out those details right now with Konno, instead of with her groups actual leader, is kind of sketch as hell in my book.

This is understandable. Even though I think that, knowing the lines along which her group may fracture, Konno could do much to reinforce it instead... given the reason to stick her neck out for them, which she currently lacks. But that has its own drawbacks.

But then, if you don't actually have an offer for her, why do you reveal your knowledge of her power?

With redzonejoe's idea, it had a purpose: "I know your power, and I want you to lend it to me." What is yours?

It's not just a trivial tidbit that reveals how well we are informed. Her power is dangerous, a double-edged sword that would make her unemployable to half the Tokyo teams who would be unwilling to take a risk of having someone like her around. She keeps it a secret from her own team, and probably not just because she is waiting to backstab everyone, but because the knowledge of her ability would make them second-guess her every decision and motive.

Telling her 'I know what you are hiding from your team' with no follow-up carries certain connotations, which might not be what you are looking for. Even if you don't want to come off as threatening, it still changes the relationship dynamics when you say you know something that has the potential to ruin a person. I don't think she will damn the group just to keep you away from them and the secret from leaking, but it definitely doesn't build mutual trust.

Just fyi, that last post wasn't really about the vote anymore. It's more of a larger picture "how do we want to handle things going forward?" discussion, which is obviously strongly related to this vote, but I wasn't particularly attempting to sway the vote with that post. Unless Nevill there works miracles I've basically accepted that the vote is over and I just want to get everybody on the same page about Yui's self-imposed responsibilities and what they actually mean in practice.
