A homeless mutant in 1980s New York struggles to survive and thrive and live.
1.0 Prologue
It's 1980s New York in the fall. The leaves have fallen out of the trees and the air has turned cold, crisp. You're Evelyn Schwartz, a homeless mutant who was kicked out of her home last year. The X men and the Brotherhood debuted two years ago and while they have made strides in their own ways, mutants still face fierce discrimination. They can be barred from most places and housing is often refused to them. Your powers are unimpressive to you, having only the ability to move an ounce and the ability to change your skin color to different colors.

What are your attributes? (Must choose at least one, can choose all of them.)

[ ]Claws that can retract.

[ ] All blue eyes that glow when using your powers.

What is your backstory?

[ ] You come from a rich family that tried to have you killed when you emerged as a mutant, seeking to erase you, a stain, on their family. [THE FAMILY LEGACY]

[ ] You come from a middle class family that loved you dearly until you emerged as a mutant. Then they kicked you out. You're hoping to find your sister in New York who might take you in, but she didn't leave an address when she left your family for reasons you're beginning to understand ... [SISTER DEAR]

Evelyn Schwartz shivered in the fire escape as she woke up to a gale of wind through the alleyway. She'd have to find somewhere to live soon, hopefully she'd find her sister by then. Going to any of the anti mutie shelters, which was all of them, was a risky business. She had heard of rumors of mutants who came in and didn't come back out. She adjusted the sunglasses she was wearing to hide her unnatural all blue eyes and checked her pocket. There was only a crisp twenty dollar bill, a far cry from the three hundred dollars she had started out with when her asshole parents had kicked her out.

Her stomach grumbled and Evelyn made the trek down to the hotdog stand she usually went to, where the friendly Irish man never asked too many questions about her homelessness and choice of eyewear. He was the cheapest food around at three dollars.

"Hey Mister Ryan," she greeted, with a smile.

"Nice to see you again," he greeted back. "Usual?"

"Yup," she said. He quickly got it done and handed her the hotdog with ketchup and onions that she took gratefully while sitting on a bench nearby to people watch. She didn't have much options at the moment. Maybe she could be a paper seller for the Daily Bugle or do that under the table cleaning job she heard about from Ed, the resident permanent hobo. But she also wanted to look for her sister, where her only clue was that she was living in a neighborhood called Hell's Kitchen and her name 'Catherine Schwartz'.

What do you do?

[ ] Go to the Daily Bugle and try to sell papers for them.

1.2 The Job
[X] Go to Ed and get that under the table cleaning job.

Evelyn made her way to Ed's usual haunt, a nice street where he panhandled for money. Smiling at her, he waved her over and she ambled over.

"What do you need me for, girl?" he asked, giving her a knowing look.

"Well, I was wondering if that under the table cleaning job was still available?" she asked, hands in jacket pockets.

"Ahhh, that. Yes, it's still available. It's from an old friend who owes me a favor," he explained. Ed stood up and started walking to a nearby payphone. He dialed a number after loading it with coins and waited patiently.

"Hey it's Edward, I'm calling about that job ... She's a good kid, don't worry ... Today? That's good ... Thanks Thomas," He hung up and turned to Evelyn. "Well he needs someone today, great news. It's at Oscorp, he's expecting you in an hour. He'll be in the lounge in a blue suit."

Evelyn calculated how long it'd take to get there and nodded firmly. "Alright, I better get going, thanks Ed!"

She ran off, jogging as she headed to the Oscorp building uptown. The buildings got even taller and the people more elite as she moved, making her uncomfortable, but she managed to get to the building without incident and while the security gave her a hard look, they didn't stop her. A man in a blue suit stood up from the lounge area and strode over to her while scrutinizing her. He had all white hair that was coifed perfectly and grey gloves.

"You're Ed's recommendation?" he asked, primly.

"Yup," she said nervously.

"Well, I'm Thomas Gendry, head of cleaning staff. Come with me, I need to measure you for your uniform and such." He said, turning on a dime and heading to a back door. Evelyn trotted alongside him. As soon as the doors closed behind them, he began talking.

"You'll be paid 60 dollars for six hours of work out of my personal wallet. If I need you for longer, you will be compensated accordingly. There are facilities to shower if you need it. Try to keep your head down and you'll do fine," he said, before taking her to a laundry room and pulling out a measure tape from somewhere. "Hmm, you're a medium. I'll give you three uniforms, please try not to lose them."

The uniforms were a baby blue color that smelled fresh. Evelyn loved them instantly. He looked at her face and sighed.

"Those sunglasses aren't going to work," he searched around the room and found a pair of black goggles. He handed them to Evelyn who took them gratefully.

"Just say you have a light sensitivity if someone bothers you about them," he said dismissively. He checked a clipboard on the wall. "It looks like you're doing the penthouse, floor 16, and the cafeteria floor. Also if you find, god forbid, any blood or worse, do not try to clean it up yourself, fetch me or the floor manager and we'll handle it. Here's your pass and schedule. Don't lose this either."

She nodded and headed into the locker rooms to change. Starting at the cafeteria floor, she found that it wasn't terribly hard job as she had dealt with worse being homeless. Floor 16 was interesting as it was the bio research floor. Mostly very full of plants. The penthouse was where things were interesting.

It was fairly clean already and she was mostly getting rid of dust and vacuuming. Harry Osborn was inside, talking on the phone. He nodded at her as she passed, but continued talking.

"Look, I want it discontinued. What my father was doing was very inappropriate and no longer represents the Oscorp brand ... I don't care, break the contract! ... I'm getting an important call, goodbye," he snapped, hanging up and switching to the other call.

"Cathy, it's so nice to hear you ..." He said, in a sweet tone. Evelyn paused. What a weird coincidence. She kept vacuuming. "You should move out of that apartment and in with me, Hell's Kitchen is no place for you ..."

What? Evelyn paused again. Could this be ... ?

But before she could do anything, a large tall man with red hair came through the door. "Osborn, I need to talk to you."

"Can you hold for me honey?" Harry Osborn said into the phone, before glaring at the man. "Dr. Octavius, I am busy."

"Talking to that girl of yours yes. You have more important responsibilities such as allowing the military to contract my work." Dr. Octavius spat out.

"The military does not need your tentacles to kill more civilians." Harry said, exasperated.

"I need the money to fund my research!" He exclaimed.

"And I told you, you need to diversify." Harry said, growing more heated.

What do you do?

[ ] Ask Harry Osborn if the woman on the phone is Catherine Schwartz.

1.3 Kingpin's Territory
[X] Quietly leave. You don't want to get caught up in this.

Evelyn quietly backpedaled and made her escape as the men continued to argue. She did not want to get caught up in a fight between Harry Osborn and one of his top scientists. She collected her payment from the head cleaning lady, Anna, and got out. It sounded like it could be her ... but that would mean her sister was in a relationship with Harry Osborn, the orphaned heir of Oscorp? Ridiculous.

She headed to Ed, to thank him again for the job, and again, slowly the landscape changed from towering skyscrapers to shorter buildings and dirtier streets. Once she got close enough, she saw that Ed was being bothered by two men in black suits. She slowed down as she could hear snatches of the loud conversation.

" ... don't understand old man! This is Kingpin's territory now and anyone who gets money, including beggars like you, have to pay for the security that comes with that," he said, looming over Ed.

"Okay, I have twenty dollars, if that's what you want," Ed said, warily.

"Do you hear this?" He said, sneering at Ed and pushing him backwards. "I use twenty dollars for fucking toilet paper!"

"I'm homeless sir, I don't get that much living on the streets," Ed said, regaining his balance after nearly falling.

"Then we'll take it out of your hide," The other man said, cracking his knuckles. Evelyn's eyes widened as Ed caught her eye and shook his head no.

What do you do?

[ ] Stay out of the way.

[ ] Offer them seventy dollars to leave Ed alone.

1.4 Ed
[X] Stay out of the way.

Evelyn stays out of view, out of the way, as the men proceed to beat Ed. It's hard to watch. She still watches though, burning this memory into her mind. Eventually they get tired of kicking him and leave, entering an expensive lincoln car. She runs over as soon as the coast is clear and tries to take stock of Ed.

"I'm fine, I'm fine," Ed said, struggling to stand up. She helped him up. "Thank you kid."

He has two broken fingers and is probably a mass of bruises. "You should go to a doctor for your fingers." She said automatically. She kicked herself after immediately for being stupid.

"No money kid, not even for the clinics. Besides I know how to splint and set these myself. Not the first time I've broken something," he said, shaking his head.

"I'm sorry," Evelyn said, eyes welling up.

"It's okay. Better a man with terminal cancer get beaten than a girl with so much promise," he said waving her off.

"What?!" Evelyn exclaimed, shocked.

"Don't worry about it," he said with a sigh. "Anyways, how did the job go?"

"Don't change the subject! You have terminal cancer?!" she exclaimed.

"Don't worry, there's nothing to be done about it. Stomach, stage four, yada yada," he said, flippantly. "C'mon tell me about your day."

"Okay ... " Evelyn said. "I, um, cleaned a bunch of floors, including the penthouse. Harry Osborn was there."

"Hah! Really?" Ed said, slapping his knee.

"Yeah, but I think ... I think he was talking to my sister. As a girlfriend." Evelyn confessed.

"What? What are the odds?" Ed said, blinking.

"Yeah I know! But then a scientist named Dr. Octavius came in and they started arguing and I left because I didn't want to get caught up in it." Evelyn looked down.

"Well there's valour in retreating for another day." Ed mused. "Well, we should both get going now."

"Huh? Why?" Evelyn asked.

"This street isn't safe anymore if Kingpin's putting his men to marking it." Ed pointed out. "You and I need to move. Morlock or Noir territory should be safe. They don't care about us homeless."

"Ah ... " Evelyn took this in and nodded. She parted ways with Ed and found another fire escape to sleep on. She looked at the sky nervously, as the cloudy skies forebode snow or worse.

Evelyn woke up to rain. It was drizzling, but ice cold and she knew it would get worse really quickly. She got down the fire escape and under a shop's overhang. She checked her clothes to make sure it wasn't wet- which it wasn't- and watched the rain pour down for an hour. When it finished, she wondered what to do. She didn't need to go to Oscorp for a few hours.

1.5 Paper Hawking
[X] Telepathy- (LVL STUDENT 0/100XP) Can listen to brief words of surface level thoughts!
[x] Go to the Daily Bugle and try to sell papers for them.

Evelyn begins to hear strange things around her as she decides to go to the Daily Bugle to try to sell papers for them.

<Late> She passed a running office worker.

<Fucking cat> A woman with a bunch of bandaids on her fingers walked past.

<Ice cream> A little girl with her mother were in front of a ice cream shop, looking at their menu.

Evelyn was pretty sure these weren't her thoughts. So ... she was either going crazy or she was developing another mutation. She decided to believe in the better option so she ducked into an alleyway and tried to turn off this telepathy. She didn't exactly want to hear every johnny and jane's thoughts all the time so Evelyn tried to focus like when she focused using her telekinesis. It just seemed to intensify the thoughts, but she could feel it now, tangible and warm, and so carefully pushed it further down into her mind, covering it with old memories. Coming out of her fugue, she was relieved that she didn't have to hear the thoughts of everyone passing by, but just as a test, she pulled it out.

<Game> <papers> <Jeffrey>

And pushed it back in.

Blessed silence. She smiled and headed to the Daily Bugle and managed to get to the receptionist there. She looked to be in her early twenties with black short hair and a red polka dot blouse with a shoulder padded black jacket over it. Her nametag read Betty.

"Can I help you?" She asked, tilting her head.

"Hi, I was hoping I could sell papers for the Daily Bugle?" Evelyn asked, nervously.

"Okay, but you'll have to pay an upfront fee of $10 for a stack of hundred 25 cent newspapers." Betty explained. Evelyn quickly did the math in her head and found it was a profit of $15. It wasn't bad if she managed to sell them all in an hour.

"Sure, sounds good. Can I come back to grab another stack if I manage to sell them all?" Evelyn asked.

"Absolutely." Betty said, beaming. She gave Betty the money and grabbed two stacks of fifty newspapers. Turning on her telepathy power, she quickly used it to discern who wanted a paper and who didn't which made her really efficient. In an hour, she was rolling in quarters and headed back to The Daily Bugle. Betty took her money with some surprise, but didn't say anything as Evelyn grabbed another stack.

Evelyn was disappointed that when she returned there were no more stacks, but it wasn't bad for two hours of work. She decided to head to Oscorp for her work, braving the gentrified streets again. Unfortunately, she wasn't assigned to the penthouse again, being assigned to three floors of science related things. Evelyn was cleaning the sixteenth floor when she was rudely bumped by a scientist.

"Schultz!" a female scientist yelled, stalking up to a taller brown haired woman.

"What do you need again Raxton?" Schultz said dryly.

"Fuck off, you owe me, bitch," Raxton snapped, pulling out two pieces of paper. "I need your boss to support these two proposals."

"Doctor Octavius hardly listens to me," Schultz said, rolling her eyes. She still took them and looked them over. "They're both interesting, but I can't do both. Choose one."

"Are you kidding me?" Raxton said, folding her arms. "I saved your ass when I double checked your formulas last month."

"I would have caught those eventually, and besides, even you know that doing both is an impossibility," Schultz said, before shaking the papers with her fingertips. "Now choose."

"Fuck off, you choose. I'm going to get some coffee from the cafeteria." Raxton said, before stalking off angrily. Schultz grimaced, before spotting Evelyn.

"Hey, sanitation staff lady!" Evelyn's shoulders stiffened as she tried to find an exit. Unfortunately, Schultz was upon her with her long gazelle legs before she knew it. "Can you help me out? Choose one proposal for me. Here."

She handed the papers to Evelyn who timidly took them. One was about a new type of electrical power plant while another was research about inducing regeneration from lizard DNA.

What do you choose?

[ ] Power plant.

[ ] Lizard DNA regeneration.

"Thanks, I really appreciate it," Schultz said, smiling slyly. "Here's my business card as a show of my appreciation."

Was ... Was she hitting on her?? Evelyn turned on her telepathy as she took the card.

<cute!>

Evelyn blushed and turned it off. "I-I gotta go clean." Retreating to an opening elevator, she headed to the worker's lounge to cool off and hide. She ate her dinner and wonders if she should try to go to the Penthouse under the guise of cleaning or not before going to her trusty fire escape.

What do you do?

[ ] Go to the Penthouse under the guise of cleaning.

[ ] Don't go and head to your new fire escape to sleep.

1.6 Norman Osborn?
[X] Lizard DNA regeneration.
[X] Don't go and head to your new fire escape to sleep.

The next morning was pretty good, no snow yet thankfully. However when she came in to get her second stack, she found herself staring down a sixteen year old east asian girl who was holding the last stack that they had both grabbed.

"Let go," she growled.

"No way, I got here first," Evelyn said, weakly.

"And I grabbed it first," she snapped back, but Betty stood up and walked over.

"Girls, there's only one way to settle this," she said, serious. "Rock, paper, scissors!"

Evelyn blinked but the other girl was already in position. Throwing out paper, she was surprised to find that she won as the other girl played rock.

"Agh! Damnit!" she said, grimacing.

"Don't be upset, Michelle," Betty reprimanded lightly. "You'll get another stack in another day."

"Fine," she said, before holding out a hand to Evelyn. "I'll win next time."

"Okay?" Evelyn said, taking her hand and shaking it. "I hope that there's not a next time for both our sakes."

---

She got to Oscorp again, admiring the trees falling leaves and changing colors. This time she was assigned to the penthouse again but Harry Osborn wasn't there this time. Instead, there was a broken window and a man rummaging through the papers on the desk. There was a mechanical glider on the floor and Evelyn had a sinking feeling as she turned on her telepathy.

<WHERE> <MINE> <HARRY>

She backed away quickly but bumped into Harry Osborn who stood in the doorway in shock.

"Dad?!" he exclaimed, making Evelyn call him stupid in her head. The man turned towards them and she could see the resemblance in a funhouse mirror sort of way. The features that made Harry Osborn striking and handsome were grotesque in its sunken madness on Norman Osborn.

"Son, it's good to see you. I'm here to take back the company, you must be so tired of the responsibility," he said suavely.

"Dad, you're a criminal. You, you killed people," Harry said, pulling Evelyn back behind him. Norman Osborn's face twisted suddenly.

"I DID WHAT I HAD TO!" Norman screamed at him. "YOU SMALL MINDED PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND!"

"Dad ..." Harry whispered, afraid. Norman started stalking towards him, hands closed in fists.

"I'll show you how you have to be a real man to rule this company!" He yelled.

What do you do?

1.7 Hazard
[X] Use your telekinesis to induce a stroke in Norman. No one would suspect you, given his medical history of injecting crazy chemicals into his body.

Evelyn was terrified. Looking at that madman's face, she knew he was willing to kill. She wanted to run, to turn around and never look back.

But she'd never forgive herself if something happened to Harry Osborn. After seeing Ed, she didn't want to have someone's injuries or worse on her hands.

So she concentrated her power in a tiny point in his brain.

Norman staggered suddenly, gripping his head with his hands. He grabbed a fancy endtable to steady himself and toppled a vase, that was probably worth more than a entire year's paychecks, onto the ground. It cracked in two as Norman moaned.

"Dad?" Harry said, taking a step forward. Evelyn mouthed what and grabbed the back of his collar to drag him backwards.

"We have to get out of here," Evelyn hissed, pulling the fire alarm on her way to the stairs. Harry Osborn seemed to get his equilibrium and nodded firmly. They met the other workers and scientists on the way down, with most of them swarming Harry with questions.

"Sir, is this another false alarm? I don't see any smoke from the building." Doctor Octavius asked.

"No, my father apparently broke out of the facility he was in and came here at the penthouse." Harry said, reluctantly. There was many shocked faces among the crowd, and the pace picked up considerably after that bit of news.

"Someone call the police," someone spoke out.

It wasn't easy getting down all those stairs, but the people of Oscorp managed to do so. It was a large crowd that milled outside of the the corporation, anxious for news. Some left already after Harry declared today off and they could go home if they wanted to, but Evelyn wanted to know the state of the man known as Green Goblin. Finally a cop came outside, and explained that Norman Osborn wasn't there anymore, though their story was corroborated by the fact he had escaped from the facility he was being held at.

Mr. Gendry found Evelyn in the crowd after that and sighed. "I am truly sorry for what you just experienced and grateful you got Mr. Osborn out of there safely. Consider this hazard pay."

He gives her $560 much to her shock.

"Thank you Mr. Gendry." Evelyn mumbled. He waved her off and she hurried off to sleep off her exhaustion. She didn't know how to feel about Norman Osborn being alive ... It was good she didn't kill a man, but not so great that he got away still. She went to sleep on the fire escape.

A small snowflake landed on Evelyn's nose and she woke up, miserably cold. It was her day off from Oscorp so after she finished selling the newspapers, she wondered what she should do.
