Hold up @ManusDomine you're running a Mage game? Got any spots left?
I'll write you on the list, but it's currently full.

(That is, unless @EarthScorpion decides to leave because he gets bored or something; cheeky fucker still hasn't made his character sheet, I think he's planning to pretend he's done it and go as long as he can without a character sheet until I go "wait I'm like 90% sure you don't have Forces 5 ES you've got to be kidding me". Then he throws a rare Disney movie at me and runs before I can pursue, probably.)

Hold up you're running a mage game where are people talking about it and why are you not talking about it on SV? :V

Is it possible to lurk on the game so I can actually see how one is run? There's a group I'm in that I might be able to convince to play Mage once our current Vampire game finishes, but I'm still really hesitant on doing so while my only experience of how paradigm casting works is Panopticon.

The group plays in person, and while Panopticon was a great read, it's not a good example of what you should do on the fly, because far too much thought went into each action for me to even attempt to use it as a basis for actually playing.

Witness the power of Discord my Technocratic friend, for science marches on. :V

(It consists of @EarthScorpion, @Omicron and @NonSequtur.)

How cruel, hiding knowledge from the public so that only the worthy may gaze upon it. How anti-Traditionalist :V

I did a lot of paradigm casting in @IXJac's mage game. If you're comfortable with your character's paradigm, it becomes pretty much second nature, especially once you realize that paradigm and genre have more than a few overlaps.

Fanfic: Haigeki Ch 7, Ranma | FanFiction

and I really liked it's take on magical girls, so I decided to do a write up for its use in Mage the Ascension.

Magical Girls
Originally from Japan, Magical Girls (MCs) use a corruption of the priest techniques practiced there. Instead of seeking purity of spirit, MCs seek purity of the body. Pursuing beauty with the fanaticism of a zealot, MCs quickly come to embody a specific form of beauty. Clothing, cleanliness and makeup are all used during this process, but less obvious things like mannerisms and vocal training play a role as well, for a MC must be beautiful in all ways. This devotion to beauty grants the MC access to the priestly techniques of Haigeki(Rejection) which allows them to seal or destroy ugliness and Shuken (Supremecy/Dominion) which allows them to impose their view of beauty on the world. These techniques must resonate with the Megami no Ooi (Mantle of the godess), the aspect of beauty that the MC embodies/pursues. Once the MC gains access to Haigeki and Shuken, they turn it inwards, removing any imperfections and enhancing any beauty they have, allowing them to more fully embody their Megami no Oioo. This quickly creates a feedback loop which ends in their transformation. The benefits of such a transformation are immense. The primary benefit is a constant, passive use of Haigeki and Shuken. Actions and objects that embody beauty (as defined by the Megami no Ooi) are enhanced , while those that it considers ugly are weakened. MCs can run downhill during an avalanche in heels and not trip or get dirty, for Shuken rejects such ugliness. Blows turn aside or miss by inches to preserve the beauty of the MC, and those that hit are quickly healed. These defenses tend to vary in execution depending on the magical girl, but the end result is the same. In addition, the MCs Haigeki and Shuken are enhanced while transformed, and can be used to impose or reject more esoteric forms of beauty as long as the MC considers these to be truly beautiful, though the MC can never learn magic directly opposed by their Megami no Ooi. A candy themed MC might for example be able to make their candy as tough as steel, as long as they consider hardness to be something which candy should have. However the transformation is tiring to maintain, and their rejection of reality is fragile. Once the transformation is dropped, all the damage accumulated returns, and any changes revert.

I'm going to note that Mage doesn't support magical girls very well.

You need Matter 3 to do transformations, which is half your starting spheres right there. Every transformation is Vulgar, so that's paradox you're accumulating. And finally, a lot of them fight with obviously magical weapons, which are also vulgar.

Golden Chalice Fite Mage versus Magical Girl With Similar Attributes turns out to be pretty horrifying for that reason.

This is why you kidnap a bunch of Japanese children and bring them to a secluded island where you will have all of your fights.

Add to that, say they are special chosen girls and teach them about some magic, then leave them to their fates when the fuck up because they're level 1 and see what they do. BAM, self contained story of fighting monsters with boat loads of terror since they might not be smart enough to figure out, hey maybe ya shouldn't do magic. Cause power corrupts or some shit. Or maybe they cannibalize each other, cause sometimes two mana can make all the difference in making or breaking things and/or enemies. Or making more enemies. Paradox fun time. And I'm sadly unaware of old Mages mechanics and know Chronicles just enough. Oh well, maybe the girls make vampires or something.

Yeah, some changes were made to make them more Mage friendly, such as Shuken and Haigeki being available outside of the transformation. Additionally their defense can be quasi coincidental. Their powers work to keep them beautiful while transformed, and this can be enhanced toughness, but it can also be sailor moon esque lucky stumbles or extremely graceful prescient dodging like sailor pluto. But adhering to closely is hard on Mage.

The point of populating a remote, secluded island entirely with people who are indoctrinated to believe that magical girl animes are real is to create a bubble of Consensus in which Magical girl anime tropes are the fundamental laws of reality. And thus everything a magical girl mage does is coincidental. While things that work against these tropes would be vulgar.

It handles Nanoha pretty decently, actually; her Barrier Jacket's appearance and resilience are based on covering it in forcefields, so Matter isn't needed, and she can accomplish the vast vast vast majority of what she does with Forces 3+ like a good little techno-hermetic. Also, much of the really fancy showings take place either on planets where the magitech is an accepted way of doing things or in subdimensions created to isolate anomalous stuff from Earthly reality.

(Raising Heart is obviously a Familiar/Device/Mentor combination who counts as a teacher for Forces, Dimensional Science, Prime, and Correspondence.)

More traditional Magical Girls are better modeled with spirity stuff, of course. Which means they typically end up fighting werewolves and ghostbusters.

And most of the rest can be handles with Correspondence for her scanning, long-ranged attacks and teleportation, and DSci for cross-dimensional things and scanning for Lost Logia (unless that comes under Prime).

(Unlike most magical girls, Nanoha definitely uses DSci)

Nah man, you trap everyone in an artificial world you created in a video game.

That way they can contextualize all the hilariously vulgar magic as just video game shit.

"Thank goodness you back-hacked that madman's operating system and deactivated those remote kill systems, then freed everyone!"

Watcher Brown: "Happy to be of service, ma'am. This is why we expect the government to pass a proper VR regulation bill, so no one will ever be trapped in a death game again. Incidentally, our psychoanalysts spoke with your son, and we believe he needs counselling. Your daughter, too."

"But she wasn't even in the game."

Watcher Brown: "Yes, ma'am, but just from the conversation we believe her to have been traumatised badly by her brother's absence. She was acting... ah, inappropriately around him. Better to nip that in the bud, eh?"

And so once again, the Technocracy saved the day.

I think it's possible to create Magical Girl RP that borrow quite a lot of oMage mechanic, though... detail will vary.

Look, for oWoD you have Senshi: the Merchandising; for nWoD you have Princess: the Hopeful. Both WoDs have full fangames of magical girls.

And in the case of Princess, I'd rank it in playability above multiple published games. For example, it actually has a strong and coherent "What do you do?" thing - fight the Outer Darkness, beat monsters around the face with your goddamn princess wand, fight the dark magical girls of the Twilight Queens and try to prevent human misery and suffering. Geist, Beast and Mummy all lack anything so strong.

(Well, okay, Beasts are literally creatures of the Darkness from a Princess POV: they're monsters who spread fear and suffering and human misery. The best thing a Princess can do is put a Beast out of its misery through gratuitously applied Hope-empowered shankings. It probably shouldn't even be a sin, considering that Beasts show no sign of human morality)
