You brightened upon entering the assigned waiting room for the chosen representatives of House Iris. "Oh! We got the ones with the red cushions!" You promptly dropped into one of these said cushions, letting out a pleasured moan at familiar comfort from your childhood. "These are the great ones, I tell you. Much better than the gray cushions most rooms are outfitted with."
"Of all insider knowledge you could have of the splendorous Senate on Mars, this is what you prioritize?" Radana muttered while stepping around to stand behind the couch. "You truly baffle me with what you deem vital."
You gave your best friend a look that mixed hurt and confusion. "You underestimate how stiff those seats are! Come on, sit down and feel how luxuriously soft these are. Why are you standing like that?"
"Because behind the Solar Queen is where I ought to be," She explained and coughed. 'Especially when there are other representatives likely coming to see us and introduce themselves soon."
The mere mention of social interaction had you sitting up with wide eyes, the soft couch now like an iron cage. "Oh," You croaked and buried your head in your hands. "We're having visitors? Who?"
Radana sighed. "If you had actually read the briefing I gave you, you'd know it's all the ones you don't want to upset."
"Fuck!"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You plastered on the biggest and widest smile you could muster to disguise your internal screaming. It would be most impolite to upset somebody who looked like they strolled through active warzones for light morning jogs. "Allow me to express my gratitude in reassurance that the United Empire can count upon brave soldiers like yourself to defend her interests."
"Defend? That's a real riot of a joke," The scarred veteran laughed, an artificial element to their voice that likely had to do with the extensive cybernetics that they bore. "Defending's a good garrison contract, but you know where the real money is? Attacking new worlds and getting salvage terms. That's how you get richer and stronger."
You silently noted the incredible variety of augments they bore, and wondered if they had taken them all in conquest then. If nothing else, then they were at least consistent to their aggressive posturings. "I see. I'll keep that in mind in case I ever need the services of your people's famed mercenaries one day," You delicately phrased, eyes narrowing in suspicion.
Their glowing electric eyes lit up and they gave a fanged grin. "Course, Orochi's going to be worth every credit you buy us with. So long as you pay, that is."
"Which suggests that some don't," Radana noted quietly behind your back. "I doubt they seldom get away with it."
"I doubt they live at all," You breathed in the same whisper while giving a polite nod to the departing representative at the same time. Given the lack of reaction or even tactful exit, you knew then that they weren't somebody higher up in their people, likely an ordinary house troop. Was this meant to be a subtle snub on the part of House Orochi?
How vexing.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"It is a pleasure to meet the rumored Solar Queen," The woman wearing an open lab coat over a formal attire smiled and gestured. "If I might take a seat?"
"But of course," You smoothly replied while hiding your frantic cursing. What a shock now to suddenly swing from a casual lackadaisical talk to something with far more formalities, especially with the way your latest guest elegantly made herself comfortable. "Might I inquire now as to how I have the honor of talking with?"
"Assistant Researcher Veronica of mighty House Ababil," She answered smoothly, hand dipping into a bulging coat pocket to withdraw a small vial. You watched with curious interest the way she swirled about the fumes within, a kaleidoscope of color that she brought to her lips to ingest. "I see that you are unfamiliar with our refined works. Would you be interested?" The scientist offered with a sly smile that instantly had you on guard.
If that wasn't enough, Radana bent low to your ear to offer her wisdom on social interaction, "The concoction may be more potent than anything we're used to. Yet declining could be an insult too."
So you knew to play it off tactfully. "Perhaps later if we happen to come to an agreement on our shared interests," You told with a measured smile. "It wouldn't do to spoil the taste before success."
"Mmh. You do so have a point." She took another dose, then capped the mix to stuff back in her pocket. You had to admit, the messy and stained lab coat gave a striking contrast to the refined suit beneath. "Maybe the taste will be even better once we have shared in triumph on a military campaign together. I do find the fruits obtain in victory tend to be that much more succulent."
You pressed your lips together into a thin line. "I'm sure of it."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In contrast to your previous visitors so far, the woman hadn't said a single word at all ever since she was let in by your aide. You watched her sit down and partake in a cup of a tea set out before her, all the while not saying a single thing. You knew better than to initiate the conversation yourself as well, recognizing the way her cloak fluttered and shimmered to try and blend in with its surroundings.
You wanted one of those.
Finally she finished the cup and leaned back in the seat, studying you for a long while. She gave a polite cough to the side and licked her lips, likely warming up a voice that wasn't used that often among her people. "I...am Speaker Luisa." She coughed again, her vocal chords now fully engaged. "I speak for Tyto. I am this section's liaison with Tyto."
"It's very nice to meet you too," You politely matched with a small bob of the head while your mind crunched the information to help suppress the growing panic. "I confess, I hadn't expected somebody of your rank to be meeting me personally."
"Very unusual indeed," She commented with narrowing eyes. "But I am here on...behalf of another too."
Radana leaned into your ear. "Likely Archon," She whispered with a hint of confusion, indicating this certainly was a deviation from the typical diplomatic script. You caught on swiftly and masked a frown.
A very tactful approach was needed. "I am aware of the special relationship between Tyto and Archon, but did not realize it extend to speaking for one another as well," You cautiously felt out, eyes searching Luisa. "Though perhaps it is instead the norm here and we are simply unaware of it so."
"No." A long silence, then the representative of Tyto remembered they had to talk about it. "They will visit later. I only...request you keep in mind who they rely upon for protection."
Totally not ominous sounding at all. "We'll do so," You answered with a plastic smile.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"...so as you can see, it is ultimately none other than Great House York that shall pioneer the future of the United Empire!" The representative repeated for the fifth time, voice still just as impassioned as the first occurrence they had uttered the same line. "None shall withstand the mighty treads of our holy machines, and all lesser shall be ground into fuel for the next fires of conquest! Would you not agree that we alone are the chosen champions of House Sol?! So join us, swear your allegiance, and reap the harvest of glorious victory together!"
I'm willing to bet that the only chosen things you are for Sol is 'loudest and most annoying voice in the room.' You wanted to scream at that and almost did so, had Radana not lightly tapped your shoulder with her leg to remind you to behave. "We will consider it," You flatly told.
That apparently counted as a win in the books of the jingoist and they strutted out the room like you had just licked their shoe in subservience. The meeting was honestly an amazing insult delivered in a backhanded way from House York to House Iris, only a mere step away from just sending a brochure to serve as a point of contact. At least that would have been far less bothersome, you sourly reflected while rubbing at your ears.
You turned to thank Radana for helping to keep your wits about you, only to find her suddenly jerking awake and alert from where she had been nodding off. The leg nudge at your back had apparently been more from her about fall asleep to the repetitious farce of a first contact meeting. If even a noble diplomat like her found it ultimately dull without reprise, then it was clear that House York wasn't very much interested in Iris outside one thing: the bent knee.
One way or another, it was safe to say they considered you beneath them in every regard.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Last one, and thank goodness it's not any of the Great Houses," You grumbled with a stretch of the arms. "I don't think I could take another moment of blatant propaganda being delivered straight into my face.
"At least Orochi had the mercy to make it quick. York made it a special type of torture," Your best friend commented and finished off a cup of tea she had poured for herself. "Now then, try to not look like you'd rather jump out the window to escape needing to play politics. The visits will soon be over, then it'll be time for the assembly and final arguments. Afterwards will be the votes, the vote tally, the vote resolution-"
"Stop making this day drag on any longer than it has to!" You snapped, then noticed one of your bugs planted in the hallway outside the waiting room going off. "They're here. Right, let's get this over with."
First was the courtesy knock, then the courtesy permission to enter. But where it then broke from the expected routine was that two individuals entered then, instead of one. Your eyes narrowed and you refrained from commenting on it so when the representative from House Archon showed up. The man in a very fine laboratory coat took a seat on the couch while their companion, a servant by the looks of things, stood behind and to the side.
Radana was the one to voice the oddity aloud, acting on her duty as your aide to comment so. "Normally, Her Majesty," You held back a wince at that title, "only meets with one at a time. Might I inquire especially into the presence of a servant in this meeting?"
"I go nowhere without them," The man bluntly told and shifted to lean forwards almost intimidatingly. "And they come at high demand. So there."
"It is a doll," The noble realized after a moment of study. You risked a quick flick of the eyes backwards to note the calm and focused demeanor, along with finger tap that alerted you to an upcoming cue. "A rudimentary service cyberbody. There are security concerns, especially if the connection is not secured. Nor do we have a guarantee on whoever is listening on the other side."
The representative from House Archon growled and stood up. "What an unbending and unwavering attitude for a stubborn diplomat. I will take my leave now, and return when perhaps you will learn to respect the preference of other peoples-"
"That would first require respecting our preferences to speak honestly and truthfully in these talks," You spoke aloud, grabbing the attention of the two. When you were sure their eyes were locked onto you, there was a show of your eyes sliding over from the scientist to the servant. "So let's dispense with the deception and have a discussion with the real representative of House Archon."
A long pause, then the man sighed while the remote-piloted doll laughed, the normally robotic voice somehow acquiring an airy touch to it. "My most sincere apologies, but I had gotten word a most boorish individual had been sent by House York to this Senate, so precautions were made," The doll told with a wink and finger pressed to lips. "Tis necessary to maintain the illusion all throughout our stay on Mars this time."
"Not to mention that you enjoyed being able to walk freely and anonymously among others who were wholly unaware that you were among them," The man muttered while moving behind the couch. With the doll taking the seat on the couch, it was an interesting dichotomy of a professional individual now advising a servant in these talks. "Once again, I apologize for my part in the deception, but whatever the Gale orders, I obey."
"The Gale?" You asked curiously and the doll smiled, green eyes glowing in the moment. "Is that your people's title for their chosen leader then?"
"Not quite. It's one that I more or less acquired for my specialty, one that you can only appreciate if were to behold my true body. But the scale of it so makes it impossible to travel so without extensive prearrangement." They gave a haggard sigh and leaned back on the couch. "Oh, these register as being quite comfortable."
"Rest assured they are," You told with a quiet smile before relaxing slightly too. "Though I assume you do lead House Archon so?"
"Indeed, I am the self-thinking intelligent system so chosen among peers to carry out executive duties. By the by," They shifted slightly to look at Radana. "One of said peers was the one picked to be honored with installation of those gifted parts. I would pass on a word of thanks to the most generous diplomat responsible for arranging it so."
Radana gave a perfect smile that had just the right amount of genuine warmth to it. "I am glad to hear it so," She told before giving a curious look. "Though if I would ask, why did it not go to you?"
"My systems didn't really need it so much, so I decided to be nice and raffle it out to somebody who could gain far more processing cycles out of it than I would. Which in turn, did help boost my popularity just a bit."
"Gale Valya," Their aid calmly interjected, "You received the private loyalty and support of the Mountain for it so. It was a momentous step in break isolation, so please don't shrug it off that casually."
"Oh, you know my prioritization settings never save. That's why having some humans around helps." They turned to you now with a considering look. "Maybe we could do with more mortals about, especially ones from beyond our borders. That could be interesting."
"An interesting proposition," You allowed and put a hand on your chin in thought. "Though I ask we not rush into these things. Especially considering your overlord."
"Ah, right. They'd probably be annoyed if we were friends too quickly." Valya thought on it some more before standing up and dusting their service outfit. "But I do hope we do get to know each other better in time and that we can maybe open up to new friends. Just be sure to offer much, and it should help me convince others to try a shot at this 'trade' idea."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Who the Houses sent was a dice roll, and there were both crit fails and crit successes. I think it's pretty clear which one is which.
