Shepard Quest Mk IV, Under New Management (ME/MCU)

The Conrad Penalty
Conrad is distracting you all the time, so giving -25 to one of your research dice does not make sense. I'm upping the penalty slightly to -10 to each of Shepard's rolls. However, please don't hang me yet because...
So basically Conrad is penalising us nearly his entire worth in average research dice (55) {I'm ignoring the plus five as any researcher would gain that from company property} on top of the security headache and other issues he's going to cause. While getting paid a top salary.

Does he at least get some solid 'moral' bonus from 'Living the Dream'?

Can we reduce the penalty by working on the same project and keeping him focused on proving himself to us?

On a side not any more word on an up coming Mako Contract/Competition?

The decision on whether or not to accept a research hero is not meant to be a trivial one. That you're debating the merits of keeping Conrad on is evidence that it's working as intended.

Using the updated dice pool and Lagrange's Rich Startup (which Esbilon approved) I present the following:

[x] Plan: UberJJK's absolutely not alliterative plan
-[X] Rich Startup
You expand your facilities to include entertainment, food, amenities, and anything else your employees could need. The company takes care of all of life's everyday bothers so that employees can focus on work.
However, employees are not allowed to take electronic storage devices out of the research areas without letting security scan them, and are regularly reminded to not talk about their work off of the corporate campus. Text and data communications from the research area are all kept on record and may be reviewed at any time. (7,500,000 credits to pay for new buildings, 7,500,000 credits/quarter in upkeep and additional personnel, reduced risk of infiltration.)

-[x] Apply to the Systems Alliance for permission to patent the Arc Reactor in Citadel Space.

-[x] Write in: The security Vi stress testing was fun. Practice more Mock-combat with your security teams and mother (if she wants) in a few environments, but make it clear that these are not mandatory, and ensure the lab always has it's normal complement.
Research:

-[x] Micro-missiles (150): After your failed negotiations during the raid, you resolved to never fail those who have been taken hostage again. This is the best solution you've been able to come up with so far- a large battery of 10mm micro missiles, slaved to a VI and capable of maneuvering and attacking a large number of targets simultaneously and with a large degree of precision. Given the size of the projectiles, you might even be able to fit them into a pistol frame, though it would have limited magazine capacity. (10d10+105) (overflow)

-[x] Repulsors (150): You know you're close, and now that you finally have proper facilities, you're sure you can finally make the breakthrough you need to build repulsors. You're sure they'll be remarkably effective as a dual purpose propulsion/weapon system if you can just figure out how to make them work. (prerequisite to Mk 2 Armor) (30d10+20)

-[x] Improved Intelligence algorithms (110/400): Improving the most basic building blocks of your VIs allows you to make all of them better in every way. (Doubles Security and Research VI bonuses, upgrades Fire Control VI to Tactical VI, which allows suit independent operation.) (50d10+45)

-[x] Basic Neural Interface (200): A human being is their mind, and the mind is the brain. In many ways the body is just a vehicle used for moving the brain around, and really it is frustrating that one has to rely on a vehicle rather than influencing the world under one's own power. And with this lateset invention from Paragon Industries, they no longer have to. (Construct an interface that will let someone control electronics using only their mind. Outsource that actual installation.) (40d10+15)

Building:
-[x] Start construction on a factory III

I'm pretty certain that hiring heroic characters should always be a no-brainer, and the difficulty should be in acquiring them, rather than any trouble they might cause. Conrad is obviously an exception, but somewhat understandable, given that we actually didn't have to do much to get him. There's maybe one or two other characters I could imagine causing difficulty, but overall, Heroic characters should definitely be a large net-gain, in my opinion.

On a somewhat different topic, though, what would we need to solve or mitigate the following problems:
- the static build-up from using an ME drivecore
- the heat build-up from ME mass accelerators
- various reasonably well-known medical issues around the galaxy, like Kepral's Syndrome or the Quarian's Immune Deficiency

If the effort involved in getting them is high enough, it'll certainly offset their penalties.

The description of Basic Genemodding says it can cure things like Vrolik's Syndrome in-utero. Does it have any kind of effect on patients already suffering from genetic conditions (i.e. does this help Joker at all)? Will we eventually get to research solutions to medical things like Kepral's Syndrome or the quarian's weak immune systems?
No.
Yes.

Just announcing that I edited my vote, keeping the same name as before so people do not have to change their votes if they still agree with me.

-[] Write in: The security Vi stress testing was fun. Practice more Mock-combat with your security teams and mother (if she wants) in a few environments, but make it clear that these are not mandatory, and ensure the lab always has it's normal complement.
Research:

-[] Micro-missiles (150): After your failed negotiations during the raid, you resolved to never fail those who have been taken hostage again. This is the best solution you've been able to come up with so far- a large battery of 10mm micro missiles, slaved to a VI and capable of maneuvering and attacking a large number of targets simultaneously and with a large degree of precision. -[] Basic Genemodding (200): It is a terrible tragedy that Humanity is still troubled by genetic diseases like Vrolik's Syndrome. The genes of infants are the building bricks of adults, and if you know what they all do, you can improve them. Time to pick up your LEGOs again. (This will let you build special facilities where people can get better babies. High upfront investment, decent pay out down the road). (Overflow 2)
Building:
-[] Start construction on a factory III
Changes: Switched to the rich start up, as the cost is worth the benefit.
Changed my dice allocation due to the changes listed by esbilon. Dice allocation now matches UberJJk's but I took 5 from my song bonus in the micro missiles to bring the VI back up to 50d10+50.
Added a second overflow option.

Critiques?

I just finished another Omake and sent it to Esbilon for screening. If he okays it, we might have enough points to just buy Micro-Missiles or Repulsors outright (with Repulsors being my preference; the missiles are nice, but not as flexible or overall useful as a new type of propulsion system that can also double as a weapon).

Because i agree with not patenting it.
We're not, yet. We are just telling the alliance that we want to do so in the future. And we're going to need to do so soonish before the Asari pull something out of their Asses Beacon to compete with it.

Much appreciated. :)

And here's the Omake in question:

The Little Intruder

"Wow, cool! Hey, what's that you doing there?" a voice sounded to Revy's left, causing her to pause in her work and turn to look for the source, which turned out to be a young girl with asian features, who was currently busy trying to look everywhere at once, but stopped to wave at Revy when she noticed her attention.

"Hi, I'm Kasumi!" she greeted cheerfully, prompting Revy to introduce herself as well, just to be polite.

"So," she then asked, "how'd you get in here, anyway?"

"Dad brought me to work 'cause Mom's off to visit her mom, who's sick, and he couldn't find someone to look after me so quickly. But his office is boring, so I took his door-card and snuck out."

"And then you went exploring and found your way here?" Revy guessed, earning a nod in return and leaving her torn between burying her face in her hands that her security team had apparently been outsmarted by a girl about 10 years old, and being amused and impressed by said girl. Probably a mix of both, and she decided that she'd definitely record her chief of security's face when she confronted him with that particular tidbit.

"Well, the simplest answer would be that I'm tinkering," Revy finally answered her young guest's initial question.
"Whenever I have some free time I come here and start working on whatever catches my fancy at the moment. Sometimes it's something we - as in, the company - are already working on, other times it's just… stuff. Things I get ideas for, regardless of whether it's useful or profitable or whatever."

"Oh," Kasumi seemed somewhat abashed. "Sorry; didn't mean to disturb you, then…"

"It's no problem," Revy waved it away with a smile, "I'd have to stop soon enough anyway. How about I show you some of what I've been working on, instead?"

That got a very enthusiastic nod from the younger girl, prompting Revy to look around her workshop what she could show her.
To be frank, it was a complete and utter mess, with tools, materials, and half-started projects, drawings, and whatnot spread around everywhere, which was also why Revy wasn't too concerned about espionage; leaving the existing security measures aside, she was one only one who had *any* idea what was what inside here.
After thinking it over, she stuck to her more "harmless" projects; things like a pair of antigravity skates (because nowadays all the kids had hoverboards, and she'd wanted something different), a fully automated kitchen that could make her pretty much any type of food she wanted and even stocked itself via drones (which actually started out as a simple coffee and snack machine, for those times she'd wanted something to drink or bite, but didn't want to tear herself away from her current project), her training-suit (which she still worked on from time to time, given how useful it'd proven itself), and more, until Kasumi finally interjected.

"So, where's your army of deathbots?"

"Deathbots?"

"Yeah! You're like some kind of super-scientist, right? Doesn't that mean that you have some secret bunker where you store vast numbers of robots ready to carry out your every command, to defend the colony or the like? Oh, or maybe you got giant mechs, instead?"

"Well, I've got my security teams; they're equipped with my suits. No mechs or bots, I'm afraid. Although…" Revy adopted a thoughtful look, "it shouldn't be too difficult to build them."

Walking over to a (relatively) empty table, Revy called up her holographic design program, while Kasumi sat down on a nearby chair, legs swinging as she watched and occasionally provided ideas or comments.
Much of those would undoubtedly never make it to a final version ("Chainsaw Katanas? Really, Kasumi?"), though she included them for now anyway. It was kinda fun to just let her inner child out a bit and run with all kinds of ideas that were rather silly from a practical viewpoint, but sounded absolutely cool, while the science and engineering part of her personality took a step back.

When they had to stop for the day, the end results looked like something more fit for a movie or video game rather than a production line, even discounting the fact that the design itself was completely non-functional, lacking various crucial systems.
Still, it had been fun, and she could probably re-use some of the ideas she and Kasumi had come up with if she ever decided to go and design some infantry-bots or pilotable mechs for real, leaving Ravy in good spirits when she returned Kasumi to her father.

"Once again, Miss Shepard, I'm *so* sorry for any trouble our behavior might have caused! It won't happen again!"

"It was no trouble, Mr. Goto," she replied, rather uncomfortable with the way he was bowing to her. "Your daughter is good company, and it actually gave me a bit of chance to stretch out my mental legs and just relax for a bit."

She took on a mischievous demeanor. "Honestly, my chief of security has much more reason to be embarrassed. And, I did kinda promise your daughter to get her a picture of his face when I told him about this…"

But now the tough part: buy micro missiles, or repulsors?

Silver sun, would you be willing to change your 50 to repulsors, so long as our research plans included a 90-something chance of finishing micro missiles?

And I think that would be the 15 meter mech, looking at it.

In my opinion we should buy Repulsors. They're ultimately more versatile and useful.

In particular, if we have them now, they'll be included in CHA's new fighter-design, which in turn will boost our profits from it. The micro-missions would have a very hard time competing with that.

my proposal would be to take the AC4 white glint and make it a power armor sized combat mech.

the 4 Answer white glint would be the piloted mech.

No one's created repulsors before us, sadly (or is it thankfully?) so we're gonna have to invent them from scratch.

I meant "buy" in terms of "let's spend the 150 bonus points we got from Omakes and guessing the name of Revy's cousin". That way finishing the Repulsors is guaranteed.

Ahhhh, gotcha. Yea, I completely agree with that.

Another question to consider woul be what to use as our Overflow option in place of Repulsors or Micro-Missiles.

My preference would be Basic Genemodding, since that might eventually allow us to unlock the Captain America serum, not to mention Extremis.

I remember someone posting a research distrubtion that had us with a 94% chance to research repulsors while pushing us up to 100/150 on the micro missles.
