You take a deep shaky breath, trying to calm your rapidly beating heart. It's magic. That's magic. Well, at least that's Budiyanto's brand of magic. And—and it's a demonstration, right? Budiyanto is fine, if a bit on the verge of panicking. You are fine, if on the verge of vomiting and having a severe heart attack. You breathe out a breath, before taking another deep one. Yes, you're calm. Budiyanto is not actually dead. She just demonstrated her own brand of magic, one that you couldn't help but feel both interested and repulsed.

"I-is all y-your magic that–that—"

"Gruesome?" for some reason, Budiyanto seems to relax as she tilts her head to the side, smirking.

You nod shakily, carefully climbing up to your feet. "F-for lack of better word, yes." You say dryly, despite the momentary vertigo hitting you. Tentatively, you lift up your fallen chair, and take a seat. Albeit, one farther than Budiyanto.

If she notices it, Budiyanto doesn't say anything about it as she chuckles. "Somewhat? Well, most of them are, anyways. It's not exactly a 'healthy' magic, so to speak."

That caught your attention. Healthy Magic. Does it mean that her magic is corrupting? Just like Dark Magic is? You scrunch your brows. "So your magic is not healty?" You ask.

She chuckles, and then chuckles more as she looks at your expression. Suddenly, her expression turns grim, a stark difference to her normally calm demeanor. "Yes, it is not. It's called 'Ilmu Hitam' back in my village, which finely translates into 'Dark Magic'." You feel your eyes widen, and Budiyanto crookedly smiles at your reaction. "Indeed. It's very much unhealthy, yes? Though it is a bit late for me."

You cock your head curiously. There's surprise, but there's no fear. Magic is magic. It comes with repercussions. Some disporpotionate, and some are trivial. You've taught yourself Equestria's brand of Dark Magic, and while you're not planning on using it a lot, you know its severe repercussions. "Too late? How come?"

She chuckles good-naturedly. "Miss Shimmer, you are acting calmer than I would usually expect, you know? Most would be begging to leave, by now." She nods. "That's good. I believe that's the kind of members I want this club to be filled with, yes? Anyway," she shakes her head softly, her smile turning resigned. "Never let it be said that 'Ilmu Hitam' is not dangerous. The only way to learn it is not by genetics or what not, but by striking a deal with a Djinn... Or a dark spirit, if you prefer."

You frown. You have heard of spirits before, in Equestria. But you never saw them face-to-face, what with being cooped inside the castle or the library, which is fine to you. You doubt the spirits are even real, anyway. One of those Occult things, you suppose.

Budiyanto scratches her cheek, the knife hanging loosely without a care on her hand. "And well, if you manage to strike a deal with them, and manage not to get eaten, the Djinn would tie up your life-force with the world's, turning you into a practical force of nature." She sighs, waving her knife-hand carelessly. "And, well, my family worked with one. Had, at least. They apparently angered the Djinn for some reason or another, and it at them. And I'm," the points the knife at herself. "Spared. Something something about redeeming my family. So, what do you think?" she points the knife at you.

You blink, your mouth flops open and shut with nary a sound. At the end, you manage to release a strangled sound. "You do realize that you're telling me more than I need, right?"

She smiles. For some reason, it brings a shiver down to your spine. "It's quite fine, Sunset. I believe I needed to say that, lest I explode from the sheer pressure." She shakes her headnin amusement, as if inwardly laughing at her own joke. "Besides, I believe I can trust you not to blabber my secret, yes? Well, also because you're new, so it's fine." The way she giggles doesn't inspire any confidence in you.

"I see." You say stiffly. "I promise I won't tell anyone about your secret."

She nods happily. "Thank you." You jump when she suddenly claps her hands excitedly, her knife resnting on her knife. "Now that that's done," she leans to you, hands clasped together, eyes suddenly large as it looks into yours. Her lips quivered, and you think you see tears forming in her eyes. "Would you join my club?"

You gulp.

We also need to see if the divination club has time travel adventures or something before we can make a final decision.

I don't get it, does that mean that making a deal with a Djinn can let you do Kanka without actually having to do the training? Because that's what it sounds like, mixing a person's lifeforce(ki) with that of the worlds(mana) is the essence of the Kanka technique.

Kartini still needed the training to actually not-die upon having her Ki tied into the Earth's mana. Of course, tying your Ki onto the Earth still has its own worser repercussions. This is not an actual secret as it is an actual Legend/Belief/Folklore in my country, but let me give you a picture: Kartini is hard to kill, but it is possible. And when she is killed, her connection to the Earth is so strong that her sould is incapable of moving on, much less from her body. By the folklore, upon her death, Kartini would suffer a fater worser than death: Soul is trapped within the body. Because of the connection, her body wouldn't decompose. In the end, she would turn into something called a 'Jenglot'. Basically a 'dead' shrunken corpse—the size of a small doll—with a soul stuck inside.

But back to the main point: Kartini still needs to train to properly utilize said power. Being raised in a family of 'Dark Mages', Kartini has been taught beforehand.

Also, have I mentioned that Indonesia's version of Voodoo, 'Santet' embodies the trope "Cruel and unusual death"? Because it totally is.

So a crappier version of Evangeline's immortality right? Or Negi's future immortality when his use of magia erebea turns him into a demon. Still if she becomes a part of Ala Alba, she can probably help Evangeline set up UQ Holder.

If you could make an ally out of her, that is.
That's actually easier then you imply. Eva for all her hard, spiky exterior is actually a very lonely softy at heart deep down. There is a reason she put up only token resistance to Ala Alba's efforts to include her in their activities or their use of her resort. She's especially vulnerable to Nagi and Negi, so making friends with Negi or one of his friends is a sure fire way to connect with Eva. And luckily for us, our roommate is Ku Fei.

Not Eva. I meant Kartini.

You gulp at Budiyanto's merciless puppy eyes. Your mind goes over the information you have recently learned: That Magic exists in here. To be honest, you want to join the club, if only to learn more about Magic. After all, isn't Occult basically means Magic in this world? And then the thought takes a turn as you consider if there's someone like Kartini in here, what are the chances of actually meeting a Seer? Still pretty low, but at least, it's not zero. You need to find something about that thing you had seen on the Mirror. "I'll think about it," you promise. "I need to check with other clubs, first."

Kartini deflates visibly, her body slumping back in defeat. "Understandable," she sighs, shaking her head. Looking at you, she gives you a small smile. "But, do know that the club is always open for new members." her smile strains a bit, and a nervous giggle escapes her lips. "I believe the club is a bit too lonely with only one member."

You blink in surprise. "Only one member?" you ask, unable to hide your incredulity as you point at Kartini. "What about the others?"

Smiling sardonically, she waves her hand in dismissive manner. "They've graduated, of course. And like I said, not a lot of people taking interest on the Occult, nowadays."

"Oh." You are about to take your leave, ready to give proper courtesy that Japanese people seem to fancy, before a sudden question pops into your mind. You look to Kartini, and you find your curious look being replied with a raised brow by the 'Dark Mage'. "Can I ask you a question before I leave?"

She shrugs. "I've told you a brief cut of my predicament, so shoot." She nods to you.

You smile a bit. "So, if I want to learn your magic, do I have to make a bargain—"

"Don't."

You stop. Kartini's eyes are cold as she stares at you, and you can feel the palpable change of temperature around you. You stare back at her eyes, none to be intimidated, even if you are feeling a bit intimidated. Something about her look just seems... dead, to you. In the end, you avert your eyes from hers.

After a moment, you hear a sigh, and the temperature returns to normal. Looking up, you see Kartini massaging her face. "I apologize for that, Sunset. I am sure that you just asked that question out of curiosity, and without a plan to seek such power, yes?" She doesn't wait for you to answer before she shakes your head. "I hope so, at least. Regardless, no, you don't have to bargain. Sometimes there's an offer." she smiles mirthlessly, dark amusement in her eyes. "But please do not seek an Evil Spirit to strike a deal with, yes? I believe it won't be good for my good conscience if you achieve a power through such method."

You nod numbly. "I'll keep that in mind." Standing up, you dip your head to the girl. "And thanks. I think I'm going to check the other clubs."

"See you soon!" Kartini's call ring as you close the club's door behind you.

You walk briskly, far away from the club room. After making sure you're far enough, you feel your shoulders slump. Goddess, that was scarier than you thought possible. Shaking your head, you feel a bit cheered as you remember the existence of magic in this world. With that happy thought, you try to find the Divination club.

With Chao's helpful direction in mind, finding the Divination clubroom is actually easy. In fact, not long after your departure from the Occult club, you are now finding yourself staring at the door of the Divination room. You can't help but note that the door is practically plastered with all sorts of drawings and notes. Caricatures, and a guide on how to read Tarot cards. A note mentioning the club president's name—one Konoe Konoka—, and a smaller one beneath it saying 'On Lunch Break. Visit After-school!'.

You blink, before frowning. Before you could do anything, the bell rings above you, signaling the end of the lunch break. Sighing in slight frustration, you turn around to your classroom.

You arrive to the class with a few minutes left as students slowly trickle in. Not one to care such a thing, you take a seat beside Evangeline. She glances at you, but returns to the blackboard. Much later, the class is finally filled and another teacher comes in. Not much of a lesson, really, as it is still the first day, but you still pay a rapt attention on his introductionary—an Itoshiki Nozumu, History teacher—but tune out as he begins to blabber about something stupid.

Periods change, and before you know, the school is finally done for the day. From where you take seat, you guess that it's probably an hour and a half before the sun goes down.

I'm pretty much set on joining the Occult Club, because there's actual magic and much more importantly because, wow, that was one hell of an introduction. Well done, SoothingCoffee, well done. But still, Konoka. She's not best girl but then, not everyone can be Yue.
