Holding out for Hope (No SV, Hold Out until the Hero Actually Shows Up)

Turn 1
Turn 1

Cain Milton Homestolk
Age: 23

Diplomacy: 3+2=5 (A Hard and blunt man by Nature, Cain is in many ways still the classist college student he was while living on Pegasus, but he's tempered his worse habits thanks to the war.)
Military: 3 (Cain, is a physically fit man, but he's no fighter, when the chips are down he will try, but don't expect a miracle from him.)
Administration: 6+4=10,(Mathematics is the Key to Science and economics and he's mastered it well.)
Intrigue: 4+1=5, (He hid his true beliefs from Communists, and the Board, not an easy feat for a man like him.)
Learning: 10+6=16, (A True talent of science and reason, he's hated for being better then many people.)

Traits:

Omnidisciplinary Scientist: You are a Scientist of at least two fields of study and as such are one of the brightest minds in the colony. (+6 Learning, +4 Administration, +2 Diplomacy)

Subversive: You have gone rogue from the Halcyon Board's direct control, and in doing so have become a dissident, by the Board's extremely broad and far reaching effects. You find it rather liberating. (+1 Intrigue, Start with the Halcyon Board actively working against you.)

Jain "Jen" Anders
Age: 22

Diplomacy: 7+4=11 (Jen is a public speaker and quite the inspirational charisma about her. PR classes only helped)
Military: 5 (Unlike Cain, she did fight on the front lines, but like cain she wasn't very good at it, student malita's normally aren't know for skill)
Administration: 5+1=6 (Jen knows Economics, basic, but serviceable, like most of Halcyon, shame she missed that last course)
Intrigue: 6+2+1=9 (Unlike Cain, she keeps secret and kept her mouth shut, properly.)
Learning: 4 (Jen got into college because of her connections, not her grades, despite her ability)

Traits:

PR Novice: You are trained in Public Relations, mostly how to look pretty and lie to people about products, but its all about PRESENTATION (+4 Diplomacy, +2 Intrigue, +1 Administration)

Subversive:You have gone rogue from the Halcyon Board's direct control, and in doing so have become a dissident, by the Board's extremely broad and far reaching effects. You find it rather liberating. (+1 Intrigue, Start with the Halcyon Board actively working against you.)

(Cain POV)

"Emerald Vale, the Backwater of a Backwater...why would anyone want to live here?" You said.

Jen shrugged. "This region was built on two things, an active Geothermal active area with a massive mineral deposit of ore...and a reasonably sized lake or is it an Ocean. Guess witch one they decided to go with?"

"The one witch makes slightly more sense without any hindsight?" You said. "Come on if they diversify the economy instead of Mono working, they'd make more money...its simple economics, instead they necessarily look to what will rake in the profits of industry."

"Cain, most of the Corps don't follow a set economic theory, and the ones that do only do it out of self interest." She said.

"Yeah but the government can't keep them in line, I mean, WHO SELLS solar systems to Corporations!! The fact the Earth Directorate doesn't even have full control over most of the Periphery is enough for us to worry! We've had Nine Wars between local governments and Corporations across the sector!!"

"Yeah because you want to know what most of them have in common? Taxing the corporations and Reforming the System's economy with a more humane manner, like Kensyan or Feildman's economic theory. Freedom and Liberty from the Corps, Government Responsibility to keep said corps in line all that."

"I didn't take you for a Neo-Liberal?" Jen said.

"I'd consider myself an Enlightened Centrest, considering that the Communists were assholes and wanted to burn down the economy in some godless desire to abolish capitalism, The Socialists can't agree on how much to regulate and most of them become Communists as a result...The Right and Far Right keep looking for enemies and they started shooting each other as a result and the Centrists...had a head on their shoulder." You said.

Jen nodded. "Yeah, well that and they didn't burn down our College dorm when they took over the University. It was fun playing revolutionary."

"Yeah, then we got pulled into the war, surrendered and watched most of our ideological friends get gassed in a public execution and well, at least we graduated." You said. "At least we did something with our lives."

"I remember you throwing a FIT, when they told us we'd be sent to Halcyon...that was two years ago now. You wanted to be sent to a Prison but you weren't involved enough in the war to warrant that, so here we are." She said.

"Yeah, ever wonder why a good majority of the people that survived the war were sent to the Deep Frontier?" You said.

"It was Cheaper than killing us, at least that's what I got from my Manager in Byzantium. It was too expensive to kill everyone, so it was cheaper to separate out and send them to the Deep." She said.

"So, we're cheap wage slaves who are expendable and they can afford to treat us like shit." You said.

"For a guy who's supposed to be smart, you're dense as a rock sometimes." She said.

"Well, you've got a face that people like, but you ain't that pretty." You said.

"How did you even manage to keep the Communists from killing you?" She said.

"I promised them I'd build them a bomb...and I did and then it detonated during a lecture getting a bunch of them killed...I warned them it was unstable...but they didn't listen." You said.

"Its amazing the Board kept you on for as long as they did." she said.

"I'm amazed that I didn't get killed by our escape."You said.

-----------------------------------------------------

Edgewater was a RUN DOWN SHITHOLE...and that was honestly the kindest thing you could say about it, tired eyes followed you as the bar seemed open.

The Bartender was just as run down as the rest of them. "Shit, what will it be?"

"Looking for work, we were robbed earlier and want to gain bits in a fast manner. We're looking to charter a ship?" Jen said.

"Oh...are you laborers the company sent us? Bunks are free, but we can start you in a week as long as you go through orientation." The Bartender said.

"NOOO! I'm a Scientist!! I'm not a Wage Laborer. I went to College!!" You shouted.

"Cain, you worked as a dishwasher in college, you can handle Minimum Wage work." Jen said.

"The Minimum Wage is 3 Bits an hour in Halcyon! I used to get 15 per hour on Pegusus." You said.

"Oh, shit...this is gonna take a while." Jen said.

Yikes, alright if we take all work actions that gets us less than 800 so unless we want 7 or 8 turns of the same stuff the only was I see of getting out of here any time soon is hoping that looting a town gives better rewards. And I don't want to do that without weapons.

Sure, if you're looking for topics, we've got two genius rebel scientists in Halcyon, I assume we've at least met Phineas.
Actually our Hero's haven't actually met Phinies Wells, as he ran off to save the Colonists in 2325, so almost 20 years ago, and Phines is about in his late 40s now.

Our Protaganists have not met the man, only know him by reputation and wanted posters.

Reason why: Our hero's were Anti-Corprate Rebels who were sent to Halcyon as the Earth's plan to break up rebel groups in the sector. If it sounds dumb, it kinda is, as it was considered cheaper to send them to other planets then actually kill them.

If we met Wells, Cain and Jen wouldn't be forced to scrounge for money to get a ship.

Any More questions?

Oh wow, I hadn't realised the timeframe was so long So Phineas was only attempting to unthaw a colonist every 2 years or so? I know the game was trying to present his actions as a moral flaw risking human life but I never quite bought that, if he's done this much prep then I'm even less bothered.

Well yeah, he wouldn't go all out on it, he'd do like 2 every once in a while with a new formula trying to get it right.

And we've got 12 years before the Unplanned Variable shows up to save or damn us.

And I'm assuming you have a question or two on "Why did the Earth Directorate leave a bunch of Anti Corprate Rebels alive and send them to Halcyon?"

and other such questions such as "Wait, how have there been NINE Corprate wars and how did the Earth Keep control!"

Simple Matter of Costs
Simple Matter of Costs

Four Years Prior...

(Harry McDoll POV)

It was never easy being one of the most powerless men on the planet. But Harry McDoll of the Earth Directorate still had some chips left to play in his corner. It wasn't much but he could still do what little Good he could do after all of this.

The Earth Directorate wasn't the Monolith of Power it had once been in the last two centuries, between the interest groups paying for planets and mineral rights, the Governors and bureaucrats sent to reign them in, barely holding onto them like a raging bull in Madrid.

You knew damn well it was all going to be going to hell one day, and the Corporate Wars were only the start of this long decay. An ever difficult process was slowly becoming more and more apparent.

The First Corporate War wasn't really a war per se, but it was large enough that enough Corps yelled at Historians to name it such. It started like all things, as a Miner's strike in the Belt of the Shadow Sector, in the Solar System of Raymond. Nearly half the colony came together to keep it running, and such. Took three taskforces and nearly four million men to put it down like a dog in the street.

The Next Two Wars were more or less the same, general strikes and worker rebellions that slowly become more and more deadly as time went on.

It was also during that point the mad rush for colonies went into a fever pitch. Colones kept springing up in nearly every star the Directorate could manage to get their hands on, terraform it, and then shove people into it.

More ships were being diverted from large regional defence forces to be claimant ships to prevent any wildcat colonies from sliding through the cracks like all good things. It wasn't a bad time to be in the Directorate, the Corps had been on a Leash at that point, the Monopoly on power had firmly still been in Earth's hands.

Then the Great Political Shift came, and with it came the rise of old ideological foes from earth's past.

Communists...an old foe that had left to ferment somewhere else had risen, also the political center left had ran off to the colonies to escape the corruption of the rest of Earth and the situation slowly became more and more radical.

Like the Fifth war, during the siege of Dumas, where the Communist murdered all their allies, seized the means of production and then got orbitally bombarded to the stone age and massacred by Corporate conscripts.

The Fifth War was really the beginning of the end for the Directorates ability to hold the Corporations on a leash.

Or the Sixth War, where they literally crashed ships loaded to the brim with explosives and fuel and get key government buildings across several colonies...leading to the Corperations putting down the uprisings before the Earth could even respond...and the outcry against the government grew more and more as Governors were becoming virtual prisoners in their own manors to interest groups and sets of Corporate backed political puppets.

It was by the Seventh War, things began resembling the Old Business Plot America, the prototypical Corporate Backed State. The One that "Won the Second World War," "The One that Defeated Communism…"

The One that sold out America to the American Facist Party, formed a one party corporate state and got overthrown by Nixon and Kennedy in the 50s.

You stretched your hand as you read the reports of what happened at the end of this Corporate War.

Student Movements, Defection of Military Personnel to the Rebels… Independence Movements all across the Deep. And were was the Earth Fleet? Busy staking corporate claims on a dozen worlds watching their brothers in arms fight for the costituates you and many others had long abandoned.

The Corporations wanted blood, they wanted to send a message, they had won this war, not the Directorate, and they were the masters of the Earth and her Colonies.

This would spark another war and you knew it… You'd give at least Five or Six years of false peace before it happens but there would be a Tenth Corporate War, and it would finally be the one that breaks something.

It would be the one that Breaks the Corporation's Hold upon the Colonies...or Destroy the Earth Directorate as you knew it.

You knew you couldn't do anything to stop it.

But maybe, you could control the outcome?

Afterall, the Corporations care only about Profit...why not give them something of a Poison Carrot.

Afterall, if you present it properly...they would be none the wiser.

You looked at the old earth, old and tired.

You smiled.

"Yeah, I say fuck those Rich Bastards to." You say with a smile.

-------------------------------------------

The General Amnesty and Work Relief Act would give all combatants on the opposing side a work away from their debt program and scatter them across the Deep Periphery.

You said it was practically getting free workers to them... and they didn't even bother to read it further than a simple flip through.

It wasn't much...the soldiers wouldn't have the support base, the officers would be distrusted, the idiolouges hated and the Students depressed of their future.

But the light of hope was still there...it could be a better world...one day.

All you needed to do was Hope and prey this seed, this last seed of Government power to save the citizen's you had been sworn to represent, would sprout.

It was something you could do.

AN: The reason the Protagonists are even alive is because a Earth Bureaucrat hated the corporations so much he sabatoged them with Federal Policy and disgused it as giving the Corps free Workers to torture.

Ah, well that makes more sense than flying up out here cost less than a bullet.
Do you know how expensive it is to kill off all the radicals in a rebel region?

Quite a bit when your a corporate. Much simpler to let the government pay to send the ones that don't cause trouble to you. Much Simpler then just shooting them.

But It's going to bite them in the ass.

If not in Halcyon then somewhere else.

because your not the only colony in the Periphery ready to explode.

After all, the Earth fully expected this next war to be Corps vs Everyone, they have no dog in this fight.

They have to collapse in about a decade due to…Disagreements boiling over.

At least that's my idea on what goes down.

I figure the expensive bit is rounding them up, and that would still be a problem either way. I doubt the government has a great amount of trust.

Rolled: D100 => 80

For one thing, Cain was good at Dishwashing. It had gotten him through the bad days on Pegusus for one thing, they ALWAYS needed someone as a dishwasher.

The Communists needed him, The Social Democrats Needed him...even the homeless needed him to clean their shit after eating.

And he optimized it...by making a Robot do most of the work and letting him do the part he's actually enjoy's.

BUT...the pay was good.

Reward: 200 Bits added to the Finances.

-[X]Work (Accounting): Surely you can use your superior education in economics to run the numbers...and maybe get a chance to, you know...take from the till. Cost:0, Reward:Reward: Run numbers for the Township, if they even listen to you. 210 bits, plus what you can steal.

Jen managed to work the wheels and get the Job as the Paymaster of Edgewater giving her one of the Great Pillars of society in the Board controlled Halcyon.

The Payroll...the most powerful force in TERRA 2 outside of the gun.

And she not only got her pay...but took a more progressive showing of her power.

She cut the pay of the Administrator and his cronies, raised the wages of most of the Working Class and a few of the Lower Managers.

It not only felt good, but it would also open the eyes of everyone else on how badly they were being treated by their employers.

So it was a WIN WIN.

Reward: 210 Bits added to the stash.

Stealing Bits (DC: 40): D100 + 5 + 9 => 103 (Critical Success)

But wait...THERE's MORE!!

(Jen POV)

"Wait...how much unsecured currency do these idiots have lying around?" You said.

You went deeper. And DEEPER and DEEPER.

And then Cain pointed out their Password for their Finances was EdgewaterBits123.

"This security SUCKS!!" You said.

"Yeah, this is a company town, and while the Physical currency is under lock and key with guns...they do have things that can be sorted about...like the stash of money they get from selling power from the Geothermal plant. Or the Tax money they don't pay to the Directorate." You said.

"They don't pay taxes to the Government?" Cain said.

"With everything going on in the Wider Periphery and how bad certain officials are, bribe money is taxes and Taxes is just a tithe to the Corps now." You said.

"How the hell did this even get this bad?" Cain said.

"We are in the boonies of the Boonies Cain, I'm surprised if Earth gets any real news at all." You said.

"So...I'm beginning to hate this place even more." You said. "And Pegusus had Communist run Gulags by the Dozens on every asteroid and planet."

"I still wonder how we avoided every bad thing that happened during the war?" Cain said.

"I question that too." You said. "Oh...say here when the war occupations calm down they're going to be sending a new Minister for Halcyon."

"Neat...now Money." Cain said.

Reward: +900 Bits added to the accounts.

[X]Work (Mechanics): Ahh you remember the College Shop and Mechanics class, good elective.
Cost:0 Reward: Work on what keeps the world running, machines. 190 Bits.
Rolled: D100 => 95

(Cain POV)

"Hot Damn...Mr. Holcomb. I've never seen a group of Automechs sing this good…" You said

"But it can be better." You said.

The Now Half dozen working robots were now handling much of the overall grunt work they can be programmed to do. All they need is simple instructions from the Maintenance or Admin terminal to work for the next two days.

The Admin even gave you a bonus.

Reward:+220 Bits in the Account.

-[X]Buy Guns: The Two of you need Iron on yourselves, if not for the Board then for the mess of Canids and monsters running around. Cost:500, Reward: Buy some guns for yourself and Jen.
Rolled :D100 => 72

You paid for 2 reliable revolvers with a hundred or so rounds each to keep the Canids and worse away.

Even shot off a round or two at the range just to see if it works.

It did.

Reward: Jen and Cain Gain +1 Martial due to Possessing the Second Amendment given firearms.

Current Finances: 1030 Bits.

------------------

Disaster Roll (Because it's Halcyon it can always get worse) : D100 => 61

You looked up and saw the small gunboat falling through the Atmosphere and knew damn well that it was one of the stolen gunboats from Monarch.

Painted Red...Communists.

More then likely what happened was that the Commies overpowered the crew and took the ship and lacking a skip drive, decided they would bring their dumb ideology to pollute the stars.

And they crashed it into the Valley...Shit.

Reward: Communists have crashed into the Vale, and will cause a problem...if not dealt with.

AN: Enjoy.

She cut the pay of the Administrator and his cronies, raised the wages of most of the Working Class and a few of the Lower Managers.
What idiot gave the intern that power?
And then Cain pointed out their Password for their Finances was EdgewaterBits123.
Oh well I guess thats that.
Reward: Communists have crashed into the Vale, and will cause a problem...if not dealt with.
A problem for the company more than for us. Guess there might be bounties available, extra glad we bought the guns.

What idiot gave the intern that power?
This is Spacer's Choice, Intern's have more power then God sometimes...most of them are too dumb to use it. Jen isn't Dumb, therefore, she has more power then the Admin.
Oh well I guess thats that.
Again Spacer's Choice is not exactly a company known for good things, the only thing they are good at is making things Cheaper then everyone else, shame almost everything they make is a piece of Shit.
A problem for the company more than for us. Guess there might be bounties available, extra glad we bought the guns.
True on many accounts...but one thing to keep in mind is...Cain and Jen hate Communists.

and The Communists hate them.

It was during the war and Cain sold almost all of them out to the Government and the Corps in exchange for Jen's life.

Not that Cain needed much to sell them out anyway, His family have been fighting communists since the Days of the Wars on Earth.

Emerald Vale Stories

Subversives of the Board Have Fled Byzantium: NEWS FLASH!! Subversive elements have escaped Byzantium's maximum security Lock up and escaped.

Dr.Cain Milton Homestolk and Jain "Jen" Anders are wanted by the Board for Spreading Anti-Corporate Propaganda. Aiding and Abetting enemies of the Colony and unethical experimentation.

Jen Translation: Cain started to make connections with other people and tried to subvert the Board and establish a political party of scientists (which is illegal, as well as forming a Union) to make their own personal projects.

As for the Aiding and Abetting part? Who knows what the Hell he did this time?

Communist Rebels have Landed in Emerald Vale: Communist Pirates have crash landed in Emerald Vale, hoping to bring their foul poison and ideology to the hard working folk of Edgewater and the Surrounding Colony.

Jen Translation: Damn Commies, they make things worse for everyone...Cain and I should know, they tried to kill us for having an opinion and believing in the free market.

Subversive News Network...your source of Real News in this Corporate Hell…

Do MSI Retain Control of their Fleet?: D100 => 48 (No The Admiral's a Social Democrat and wants to put them on a Leash, he'll trade and use their Facilities. Graham is more than pissed. Sanjar is a bit more understanding of the Situation at least.)

Fleet Strength: D100 => 88 (More or less Fully Equipped and Able, Minus Some Communists running off to do their own thing so, yeah)

Commander Quality: D100 => 95 (Yeah...The Boards Gonna have a Bad Time!)

-----------------------------------------

(Akande POV)

"Open the File on our Opponent and tell me what happened?!" You gritted your teeth in anger and frustration as the variables across the desk slowly coerced you into action against this adversary of Skill and Valor.

You had hoped Tartarus would have kept him locked away or have him face a Firing Squad for treason, but NO...MSI had to get their greedy little mites on him for their Anti-Piracy Fleet.

Now it was going to bite the Board firmly in the ASS, So what if he doesn't have any ability to resupply and repair their ships. This was expected, but you expected years before he made his more, the Admiral was Cautious , deliberate and above all smart.

He'd won wars...he'd given victory and he'd given his men hope.

His defection to the Rebels in the Ninth Corporate War shattered the Morale of the Earth Directorate forces, leading to them handing the reigns of the war to Private armies.

And the fact he nearly won despite being outnumbered at least 5 to 1 against superior numbers and armies.

He had Gunboats...ONLY Gunboats and fast assault crafts and whatever he may or may not be able to build.

An unlikely possibility, but given his reputation he is nothing if not resourceful.

"The File Ma'am." A secretary said.

You opened it and prayed that Halcyon's Board can weather the Storm.

Vice Admiral John Carlile
Age:50

Commands: Seventh Corporate War, Shadow Sector (Captain of the EDS Frigate John Young), Eighth Corporate War, Shadow Sector ( Commodore of the 3rd Assault Fleet, Commander of the EDS Carrier Adam Smith)

Defection From Earth Directorate Forces in the Ninth War, Shadow Sector (Admiral of the Pegasus Defence Fleet in the League of Independent Planets)

Commanded 30 Ships against a Fleet of 151 Corporate Affiliated Vessels, held for 5 months before surrendering after the Fall of his Government.

Surrendered after capturing the Fleet Admiral and much of his Command Staff on their Asteroid command center.

Request to MSI's Anti Piracy Flotilla after a stay of Execution and Pardon brought upon by The General Amnesty and Work Relief Act...which allowed him to retain his rank and transfer to Anti Piracy and Peacekeeping duties in Halcyon.

"This is All MSI's fault." You said firmly. "We should have shot him, everyone knew he was against the Board and its practices from the beginning and was a proponent of Colony Autonomy. If only for cost reasons."

He was a formidable opponent, but now he was cut off from any resupply, a port wouldn't take his ships and his forces are outnumbered 10 to 1, not counting the small Shipyard on Eridanos, you could drown him in ships if need be.

But that presented its own problems.

Reward: MSI has lost control of their Fleet, and they can no longer act against the Board in space. The Board is now dealing with an Active Hostile force, and while it has the manpower and resources to deal with it, it must mobilize anything they can use.

AN: Yeah, This is big enough the Update REQUIRES The MSI situation to at least be mentioned to an extent.Plus the Blockade isn't up yet so you can get a signal.
