Parkour might actually have somewhat interesting interactions with "A Little Crooked" now that I think about it.

Just like, "I am a liar" and "ambiguous gender" sorta synergize.

Edit: Also, Re: Death Note acquisition, there's a reason this is a detective Quest, not a Death Note User Quest, because the latter would probably wound up rightfully banned within a startlingly short period of time. :V

Oh! And @Lilithium , Hardy Boy/Nancy Drew synergizes pretty well with People Watching, actually. Making up stories about people and why they're in a supermarket in a fancy dress at three in the morning, etc, etc. :p

Edit: As part of being evenhanded, I looked at all plans for interesting places of synergy, and I found that!

My plan is pretty much entirely based on characterization, with a bit of a strategy (being underestimated) in mind. If anyone who knows more about the setting wants to suggest changes?

I could see a hobby write in that's focused on body language (the people watching thing someone suggested earlier, or something like it?) instead of puzzles.
People watching as a hobby is already in my plan!

edit, AND IT HAS SYNERGY WOOP WOOP

OOC: A...warning or something?
Okay, and, uh, just another thing. Not sure how to make this obvious, but this is a Quest that's going to involve death.

...and notes.

Discussion of morality, motives, etc, etc is all perfectly fine and good, and kinda the grist for the mill of a Death Note Quest (well, that and the mystery.)

But going, "Burn, burn! Kira! Kill All the Unworthy and Make Them Suffer!" might, uh, bring mods down upon this thread. So keep that in mind. Commenting on the nature of a specific death, or even saying, "This means that they are better/worse/equal to Light" or whatever is...fine, I suppose?

I'm not sure how to put it. I just know how badly this can go.

...I read Worm fics, so I know how much hatred of fictional people and desire for fictional justice can warp a person. :V

I understand! Just remember that you can always ask the mods beforehand!

I dunno. It feels like you are trying to sell us a really niche skill simply because you like it/find it cool, when there are way better methods available that are not just more effective, but similarly establish a fun/interesting character.

Climbing over to different locations? In a school? Do you realise how insanely specific that situation is, and how useless those skills are if we never encounter another such situation?

Further, just because things are changed around by QM does not automatically mean that parkour is a valid method of crime-fighting. You are pretty heavily assuming that this story will be changed to a conventional action thriller, when that is likely not going to be the case (Or at least, it's a single possibility among hundreds)

Other than climbing around the crime scenes more effectively (which is incredibly impractical for a drawn out investigation anyway), What exactly does parkour offer that can't be achieved by more generalised hobby choices - Choices that are just as unique and entertaining, but also offer a broad range of additional applications that will aid our survival?

It's fine for you to vote parkour because you personally like it or whatever reason (However understandable), but to claim that it's more useful than other choices is simply false. There are so many more useful choices that we would miss out on because of this, that i'm not willing to let go of right now.

A little rude I think.

Yes? I want parkour because it sounds interesting? I don't see that makes the choice lesser than the other ones. This is character creation, not a test. There isn't only one right answer or any one choice better than any other. I know Kung Fu or Online Savvy aren't any lesser than the other options there.

There isn't only one way of playing a quest, and as Laurent just said, this is more a detective quest than a Death Note Quest. I want a character that is more physical and this is what I ended up with. The character, whoever we end up with, is still going to be very good at all those things. He would still have police training. That means self defense courses, observation training, front row seats to any news that pops up, and yes be generally fit. Not choosing Sudoku wouldn't automatically make him dense, he would still be a prodigious detective.

Parkour and A little crooked actually open up to a thief/burglar background now that Laurent makes me think about it...

If we got the Death Note, my vote would just be for giving it back to the Shinigami. That or keeping it for the sole purpose of being able to see other Shinigami.

I feel like my plan could easily combine with yours or Nemo's. And I want to win enough that I'm considering it.

My main thing is that I dislike both of your names =v

@Andelevion @ChronOblivion @Kelirapc @matthew badger, @pantherasapiens, @Qoel, @tricholysis, @veekie, @wingstrike96, @Lilithium

How would you feel about Plan Nemo switching from:

-[] Puzzle Me This: Sudoku? That's easy. Word searches? So last year. Your talents are enough that you have a certain skill for decoding patterns and ciphers, as well as generally having a fun, relaxing hobby for the long, boring stakeouts.

to:

[] People Watching. The crowds, the little moments of their lives, each one as rich and detailed as any book. How could you not want to see it all? If it helps you see what makes people tick then all the better.

It could synergize with the disguises, too. And watching people and figuring them out fits the overall theme about as well as puzzling, I think?

...and I will also take suggestions on names. I mostly went with a single letter because that's what L had, and it works nicely for being gender neutral?

Edit: Revised potential plan:

[] Plan Nemo
-[] Name: Alex.
-[] Write-in. Vetos, again.
--[] Ambigous! No one but your boss knows what you are on paper, and you like to keep it that way.
-[] I am a Liar: S/he is remarkably good at deceiving people. Playing games with costumes and props, with sympathy that turns out to be nothing more than a ruse. It certainly doesn't make one popular with the criminals, but...what can you say?
-[] A little crooked: You aren't corrupt, but you do know some pretty bad people, and you have a decent bevy of what others might call CI's (Confidential Informants). Though, considering that they're junkies and the like...well, it isn't as if they're that different from who your parents were, all things considered.
-[] People Watching. The crowds, the little moments of their lives, each one as rich and detailed as any book. How could you not want to see it all? If it helps you see what makes people tick then all the better.
-[] A Drink In Hand: You admit to having a drinking problem sometimes! For instance, sometimes you can't get the alcohol down fast enough! It does help people underestimate you, among other things!

I suppose it's worth it to include the desires of those who didn't vote for plan Nemo. It's no less effective than the puzzle option, yet includes themes of investigation that other people want to see.

I approve.

Would not mind the switch to people watching althought one would think that it would shift the character even more towards the social manipulator build. And puzzle me this? will most likely be of great help discovering any paterns in random nonmurders.

Either way sure go ahead.

If you did swap, I might be tempted to switch to Nemo. Lithium would still be my first choice, but if it was between Nemo and any others, People Watching would swing it in your favour.

And for the name, how about Alex? Gender Neutral, has both the letters L and X in it, and reminds me of Alex Rider (a spy).

@The Laurent

Does 'I am a Liar' and 'Ambiguous Gender' Synergise with the Drinking addiction hobby, as we chose it for that reason.

I am a big fan of that! Nice homage to L, as well! :D

My thought on Drinking is that it explicitly says it helps us be underestimated? It might have a bit of negative synergy with disguises, because we're going to be finding reasons to drink a lot and so some roles won't fit, but we'd want the unassuming disguises a lot of the time.

Alex seems fitting to me, good idea.

[X] Name: J.Doe
[X] Gender: Whatever's Convenient
[X] Hardy Boy (Male)/Nancy Drew (Female): With a certain obsession for details and constructing narratives, your cases have best been served by your ability to delve into means and motive, constructing elaborate timelines and careful examination of the human heart.
[X] Fortunate Son/Daughter: Born to relative wealth and political connections, your money does sometimes make it hard to relate to other people, but it does mean that you have a few useful contacts, even in the mayor's office.
[X] Emotional Vivisection: You love peel apart people's motives and ambitions and ideals bit by bit. To reveal their true nature is really what you love doing best. This is like the least emotionally healthy thing you can do to a person you dick.
[X] LOLOLOL I Troll U: You just love it when people get angry. That's why you've made it your life goal to tick as many people off as you can.

full izaya i guess

That's true. I admit i was looking at it from all positive angles previously, but that is a valid concern.

@The Laurent

Is there a way to change our drinking habit from one that controls us, to one that we control but display as controlling us?

Something like the ability to knock down our drink and pretending to be a drunkard, but staying sober when it counts. I say this because all of the other options seem entirely positive comparatively, yet this one has negative connotations.

Am totally fine, because the important parts are still there. Also Alex is a cool name.

?

They all sound like they have bad connotations. Removing the desire kinda completely removes any negative it would have completely. Especially since I am a Liar would already cover that.

Bit of Munchkinry don't you think?

Great Scott, a social build on SV!

I'm cool with the change.

The way i envision the drinking habit is that we know exactly how much alcohol we can take, and drink the perfect amount of it for individual situations.

When we want to give of the image of a no-good drunkard, we drink the perfect amount required to get drunk, yet lay down preventative measures to stop ourselves from getting drunker. (Tipping off the barman or passing off our money for the moment to a friend, so that we have no access to alcohol)

Furthermore, if we want to give off the image of a drunk whilst staying conscious (To fool suspects or something), we use our social smarts to pretend inebriation, so as to appear harmless. I'm sure we are skilled enough to pull that off easily, in fact.

When we want to appear drunk, we act it out.

If we actually want to actually get drunk, we plan things out carefully so that we don't go too far.

If we need to stay sober, we have no massive addiction.

As a result, we can stay cool as a cucumber in any situation, despite having a reputation (Depending on the specific disguise) as a drunkard. Remember, if James bond can do this, so can we.

?

Bit of Munchkinry don't you think?

This is Death Note and we are in what amounts to L's position. I think a bit of munchkinry is warranted here, surely?

Edit:
Also, what bad connotations do the others have, besides a liking for certain *Harmless* activities?

No? Not if it completely nullifies the con of the choice. That would be going too far in the opposite direction of what you were complaining about. As I mentioned, if you want to just look drunk, I am a Liar already covers that.
