Music and puppetry I expect.

Which you note is an option for the journey Emiko hinted on.

She also sent us to meet a musician
Right just noting that it is framed rather oddly.
We never really get an option to focus on music and Shizue will be there for about a week, we'll have time to do the homework later in the name of Fuinjutsu practice.

[x] Practice her music for the meeting.
[x] Focus on talking with her teammates.
[X] [XP] Plan Hearing Out The Court

Edit: Added XP plan, it works for me now.

1) Important for the meeting.
2) Important for Shizue, Genta, and Saya.
3) Touches upon all the things I wanted, and Wall of Sound is good for when the puppet can't defend her.

[] Listen for gossip/gather information

I'd leave this for Genta and Saya to do. Shizue has other tasks.

[] Study the books Emiko will be having them read, and work on Fuinjutsu.

Can be done later on the trip.

[] See if there's anyone interesting along the way to talk to.

Mystery box and pretty interesting, but not a priority.

I'll vote on XP after the first vote tally comes out. I'm feeling lazy to parse through them at the moment.

"Hey, just...don't worry, we can go to a sushi place nearby, it's of above average quality and I'd give it four out of five stars if I reviewed things for a newspaper…" he was babbling.

"And I bet it serves coffee?" Rika asked.
Sushi and coffee. What a mad world.

Saya tumbled and recovered just enough to land on her knees, panting and trembling, her body a mass of bloody wounds, including a deep cut across her neck from early in the fight. Saya panted and Shizue stared at Stinger, moving the strings and managing to get him to stand, but only just barely. Something in the legs had given out, or perhaps the mechanism that connected the legs to everything else.
Oh yeah, this reminds me of something I brought up before--I do think that Shizue should keep around an extra powerful poison/paralytic and its antidote from Saya or Emiko. I don't quite understand why she'd only use poisons she could make herself, considering how much more effective the other people's poisons/paralytics probably are. Using them would allow Shizue to specialize more in other areas.
Saya frowned, looking briefly disgusted before admitting, "You did well."

"You fought well too," Shizue said, "If I was going to fight again I would have tried to keep my distance longer and used the water gun to irritate your skin."

Saya looked at where Stinger was for a moment, as if thinking through just where a water gun would have been hidden, and finding no hints in the tangled mass of puppet.

With quick, practiced motions Shizue sealed it up and stood, "I apologize for any pain I caused you, Saya-chan."

"...your puppet too," Saya responded as she took the antidote Emiko offered and drank it down, looking at her bloodied body with even more disgust than before.

"We should get you to Rika-chan soon, Saya-chan," Emiko said, completely distracted. "Are you going somewhere, Shizue-chan?"

"The fight is over, and at the moment I have to think about who I'm taking along when I go to the capital to meet the Daimyo," Shizue said, sounding as innocent as she could manage.

"Daimyo?" Saya asked, and the eagerness is rather hard to miss.

"Are you interested?" Shizue asked with a smile, "It'd involve spending a week with me."

"Sacrifices have to be made," Saya slurred.

Shizue smiled and shook her head as she left into the bright morning.
D'aww :)

This is the fluff that I'm here for.
"This place is a powder keg, or at least it's far more complex than you'd think," Shizue argued, listening close for Ginjiro and Sanosuke's approach, "Just try it. I can't do anything more than try to help you by telling you to take what you can. We're going to be leaving soon anyways, so if you're so worried about that…"

"Really?" Ginchiyo asked, "This is… interesting news."

She sighed, "I can't continue like this. I hope we don't meet again any time soon, if we're going to be going off and doing this… courier stuff."

"I can't promise anything," Shizue said, "I don't know where we're going, but wherever you wind up, I wish you the best of luck."

"You too, Shizue-chan," Ginchiyo said gruffly, crossing her arms.

"I had feared that trying to talk to you about this would have been…"

Ginchiyo shook her head, "Hunger is a hell of a motivator. Keep safe, and get stronger." She shrugged her shoulders, and said, "If we meet again, I hope it's not too soon."

Shizue nodded, realizing full well that it was at least possible they could meet on opposite sides of a mission, but in that moment, sure that Ginchiyo might find a way out of her problems, she could only smile and say, "Would you like to eat lunch with me? If you want you can owe it back to me at some point in the future when we meet again."

Shizue took a breath, "You and your teammates."

Ginchiyo hesitated and said, "When they get back, yes."
And this too. Aww~ :)

While the scenes themselves are already pretty good, it's all the characterization and context outside the scenes that set up these superb fluff moments to really shine.
There was only so much that could be talked about as they ate their noodles. The present was tricky and the future was vague, but the past had room for everything, and when Sanosuke asked about the investigation that'd ended up exposing the Water Snake, Shizue found that while she was very careful to not step on any toes talking about what happened, she actually was comfortable enough to discuss it.

It seemed as if enough time had passed that the Archipelago had again become a topic she could talk about without fear, and even if she had done and said plenty of things back on Reef that she didn't want to discuss with Ginchiyo, detailing the way they had investigated the matter and how it had all gone down.
Huh. This part also felt quite heartwarming. So much has happened since then, but it's chatting about these kinds of shared histories that can help people bond.
I'm going to be on my own for a week or maybe a little more soon, you can hardly steer events from halfway across Tea."

"I'm working on it," Emiko said with a smile and a laugh, clearly trying to ease the tension that had entered the room.
Eh, she already is steering events from halfway across Tea. ^_^
"If you really wanted me to stop," Shizue pointed out, "You could have done so any time in the last few days."

Emiko frowned and said, as if testing out the words for the first time, "It was a matter of seeing how you'd react, but I'd been planning on reeling it in earlier."

Which made sense, but did still feel a little off. Shizue nodded though, and wasn't even surprised when Emiko melted into the shadows and disappeared.
Uh-oh. Emiko went into an expected conversation without having fully planned out how the conversation would go. Then visibly had to think about what she was going to say to make sure she said the correct things. Emiko needs a second-in-command to handle more of these auxiliary problems. =/

It was incredibly stressful, far from the last night she had expected, but in another way she almost enjoyed it. In another life, Shizue thought as she went through lines she'd spoken dozens of times before, she might have enjoyed being an actress, especially like this.

She was a kunoichi though, it was her lineage and her family.
Ha, I wouldn't be surprised if some of Shizue's ancestors were also performers.
Of course, that scale also included the fact that repairing Stinger had turned out to be quite expensive, and she assumed that all sorts of other resources…
Ah yes, a reminder of the expenses of Shizue's craft, in lieu of us needing to plan actual budgets.
"They forget how many shinobi were involved. One of the three main founders was a shinobi, and a man I respect if he lives still. Uzumaki Hikaru was grandson.., or great grandson, not sure which, to Naruto-sama... he was young when I met him, and idealistic. He founded the Home with two civilians who could use chakra and at its height there were more than a few shinobi in Konoha and elsewhere who supported it."

Abe paused, "When the time came, he went to Naruto-sama and begged him on his hands and knees to get involved. He told me that even if he could not truly change the results, his voice would matter, people would listen and know and in the future perhaps they'd take heed. The stories vary on what happened then…"

Shizue listened, enraptured.

"They don't vary on his refusal, or on the fact that his grandson sank to his knees in the dirt to do it. They don't vary on what he did after that."

"What?" Shizue asked.

"He left. They found his forehead protector with a slash through it and his apartment empty. As far as I know he's still out there," Abe-san said, "He left because Konoha had betrayed what he believed in, and while others didn't leave, some retired."
Hmm. For some reason, most of this conversation didn't feel as compelling as I'm used to. I'm not sure why, though. Anyway, we got a few new details about the True Home anyway, which I always find interesting. Naruto and his family too.

I also wonder what Hidden Road has been up to in the meantime.

(Minor note: considering how important Naruto is, I'd think that Abe would know exactly whether that guy was a grandson or great-grandson.)
"That accent. There's a radio clip going around of a civilian talking about how badly Island treated its people, and the woman sounds like you," Abe-san said. "I've been following the matter pretty closely."
Ah, something for us to remember.

Also, I guess this is a reminder that radios and newspapers seem to be the main forms media.
but if you want to know what it was like to grow up in the Archipelago, or about some of the people I knew that are still there… I can tell you that."
Aww, I liked this fluffy end to the scene. Maybe Shizue can hear about an Archipelago play someday.
Shizue had seen it once before, the night after the premier, when she'd seen Emiko-sensei in the best mood she'd ever been in despite the clear signs of a hangover. Again, there were a few signs, and the circles and the slight indications that she'd dressed hastily, the wrinkles that could be from clothes picked up off the floor…

"Apologies for being late," Emiko said, "I fell asleep."

"Darling, how could you?!" Saya asked, "In a bed, no less?"

Emiko laughed, "Yes, indeed. In a bed."

"I'll forgive you just this once, Emiko-sensei," Saya said.

"Good, because I'm not sorry," Emiko said, and Genta was very carefully looking away.

Shizue felt she was missing something.
:o

Scandalous!

Though, now I'm wondering how Emiko thought of the provinciality of Reef.

"I had the information written down, and I'll give it for you, but Kawanishi Takuma is a very skilled chunin level missing-nin who is currently in the capital on some sort of espionage mission, something involving the court, going by what he's said. He's not quite a friend, but he owes me a few favors and he should be able to keep an eye on you."
Yay, a person to meet. Though, I wonder if this is really the highest-level person she knows in the capital. Eh, maybe.
"There's one more matter. If you want, you could meet witha court musician I know, through Abe-san. His name is Nobusuke, and if you tell him about Abe-san, perhaps you could have an interesting conversation."
Sweet, someone to talk to about either the arts or the True Home. Or both! Definitely looking forward to this.

[x] [Xp] Plan Run Your Mouth.

I'll go with those for the journey for now. Practicing music is important for the meeting and I think taht Shizue didn'T have enough time for it lately anyway, so it will probably do her some good mentally as well. We should defineteyl talk to Saya and Genta and get to know them even better, as I think we've been making some headway in that regard lately and we should consolidate that and further improve our relationship with each of them.

Don't know about the Exp plans yet. We should definetely take full advantage of the taijutsu bonus and buy Suna Ryo to become slightly less pathetic on that front and puppetry and Fuiunjustu sound good as well. Since most proposed plans already do that I'll have to think about what else to buy.

I like @Bakkasama's plan even though it involves no new jutsu, although I don't know if going full on social is the best idea. It will definetely be important for courtly matters and I think we'll have to handle social ourselves seeing who we brought with us, but I don't know if it will be enough. There are bound to be some social powerhouses at a noble's court. Maybe some more points in agility instead, as you already suggested?

It's already been explained bfore I think.
Poisons and antidotes are not static mixtures, especially not fast acting organic poisons, which often degenerate even when sealed after they are mixed to active. Applying them and then using them also carries risks, in that you don't know how to handle possible complications and interactions. Note that Shizue is already using 'disabling' poisons that are eventually lethal in a friendly spar. Anything stronger is liable to kill you unless you know about the drug interactions and precautions.

So a paralytic stronger than Shizue knows how to deal with is basically a deadly paralytic neurotoxin. Just having the antidote wouldn't be enough, not without someone sufficiently skilled in medicine or poison to know what to use.

If we get a dose of extra powerful poison, we're probably best off putting it in a hidden blade on Stinger, sealed until we really need to murder someone. On Stinger, there's little chance of accidentally dosing ourself or having the weapon turned against us after all, and Stinger can't be poisoned either.

Note, what I meant by those limits was not that you couldn't spend XP on any other things, merely that I was trying to place some caps on the things that I'd placed modifiers on so that you didn't say, "Cool, I have a 1.3, let me buy myself into a Taijutsu master in a single week."
So you're trying to avoid another situation like we had with Power, and us upping it by over a dozen ranks in less than a week.

I'll vote on XP after the first vote tally comes out. I'm feeling lazy to parse through them at the moment.

[][Xp] will vote on this a little later.
Currently, I think Puppet by 3, tai by 5 and fuin by 3, as well as Suna Ryu 1 are basically locked in.
66-34=32
For the remaining 32, I'm thinking along the lines of :
1. socialization
2. perception, persuasion
maybe a cheap jutsu.

Oh whoops. That's actually exactly what I was thinking she should do. I forgot to say that part.
Thank you very much!

Though, now that I look at them, it's actually your sketched out plan that looks most appealing. I dunno how much The Laurent rolls for social interaction, but considering how often this quest is focused on that, I'd like a little more focus on socialize, perception, and persuasion than the current plans. ^_^

(I know, I know...plot is incoming and combat is likely. But for IC reasons for the upcoming updates, I'd like the social stats to be leveled up a little.)

I'm really not convinced at all that keen ears is the right move here. I think Perception would be far better for that job at this cost bracket.

What are your thoughts on switching Socialize and Perception there? Socialize was important for veekie's plan but he wanted to spend a ton on jutsu to help in what Perception does.

As to the music, does everyone realize it's for this passage and not the Daimyo?
""There's one more matter. If you want, you could meet with a court musician I know, through Abe-san. His name is Nobusuke, and if you tell him about Abe-san, perhaps you could have an interesting conversation.""
We picked our companions partly because we wanted to talk to these specific people more, so it seems silly to ignore that in favor of doing better on a side quest.
I also think it's rather important for Shizue to keep up her work - note that fuinjutsu progress is somewhat divorced from skill level and that there are narrative implications with Emiko with the studying.

I'm really not convinced at all that keen ears is the right move here. I think Perception would be far better for that job at this cost bracket.
We got a +6 boost to Perception at the first rank, and if it improves as expected, it'd eliminate penalties from ambient noise as well by focusing on specific sounds on top of another perception boost. It's actually cheaper XP wise, to buy it with the 1.1 discount than Perception without the discount.

"+6 to hearing Awareness/Perception" Perception covers a good bit more than just hearing, doesn't use chakra, and doesn't require us to anticipate the need.
I suppose I'm not clear on the exact differences between rank 1 and rank 2 of it, but I certainly don't see 9 points of perception in value from it - not to mention that I'd favor buying more like 3-5 points of perception so it would have to do better than the 9 points since I favor something else over that.

After checking the discussion for the xp plan, I see a few things that I think are mistaken. So here is my versión of it and I would like to be corrected if there are any mistakes.

Here is how I see it.

[X] [Xp] Plan Run Your Mouth.
-[X] Purchase Suna Ryu Rank 1
-[X] Priority 1: Taijutsu, Persuasion
-[X] Priority 2: Puppetry, Agility
-[X] Priority 3: Socialize, Chakra Control, Fuinjutsu
-[X] Priority 4: Ninjutsu

This way we get +5 taijutsu and +6 Persuasion (priority 1), +3 to puppetry and Agility (priority 2) +2 to fuinjutsu, chakra control and socialize (priority 3) and +1 ninjutsu and Suna Ryo.

Which leaves us like this:

Suna Ryo first form (DODGE!)
Puppets from 45 to 48 (1 point away from changing the relevant stat from dextery to chakra molding)
Taijutsu from 13 to 18 (one of our weak spots)
Fuijutsu from 23 to 25 (continues our progress)
Ninjutsu from 27 to 28 (minimum ninjutsu for second rank of D-rank sound jutsu)
Persuas. from 22 to 28 (mostly to take advantage of the bonus)
Cha. Co. from 26 to 28 (same as above)
Socializ from 21 to 23 (same as above, could be replaced by Intelligence or poisons. The stat might be more useful to be honest)
Agility from 25 to 28 (DODGE!+stealth)

We got a +6 boost to Perception at the first rank, and if it improves as expected, it'd eliminate penalties from ambient noise as well by focusing on specific sounds on top of another perception boost. It's actually cheaper XP wise, to buy it with the 1.1 discount than Perception without the discount.

@veekie there is something I think you are misunderstandinging about Keen Ears. The description in the update is the one for Rank 2.
Ninja Art: Keen Ears (D-rank, not known)

Rank 1 - 25 XP (Chakra Control 20, Ninjutsu 24)

By using this jutsu, the user can improve their hearing considerably. At Rank 1, the bonus is relatively moderate and not selective. Loud sounds when heard with Keen Ears are likely to hurt, and it makes all sounds louder, not merely some targeted specific group of sounds. Gain +5 to auditory perception rolls, but face problems with loud noises. It's as much used for sneaking around and listening in on conversations as anything else.

(Self-target, +5 to hearing Awareness/Perception, improves ability to listen in on conversations in general, some other minor situational/narrative bonuses)

Cost: 20 chakra per minute.

(1.1) Ninja Art: Keen Ears (D-rank, Rank 1)

Rank 2 - 30 XP (Chakra Control 23, Ninjutsu 28)

By using this jutsu, the user can improve their hearing considerably. At Rank 1, the bonus is relatively moderate and not selective. Loud sounds when heard with Keen Ears are likely to hurt, and it makes all sounds louder, not merely some targeted specific group of sounds. Gain +6 to auditory perception rolls, but face problems with loud noises. It's as much used for sneaking around and listening in on conversations as anything else.

(Self-target, +6 to hearing Awareness/Perception, improves ability to listen in on conversations in general, some other minor situational/narrative bonuses)

Cost: 18 chakra per minute.

Which means that even if you buy it now it would still be indiscriminate and cost too much chakra. If you check the difference between Rank 1 and Rank 2, what it improves is the chakra cost (From 20 per minute to 18 per minute) and the bonus to hearing perception and awareness (from +5 to +6). Now, considering that, IIRC we roll on a d20, that +1 is nice but the improvements you are speculating about are not as good as your projections. It neither progresses in chakra cost as good as transformation nor it increases the bonus as much as you expect. The whole getting rid of the loud noise limitation will need a few more ranks so it won't come anytime soon. As is, its main advantage for us are the narrative bonuses from listening to conversations but we already have that.

Basically, you are overestimating by a lot the improvement we would get from it.

Now, a concern about my plan is the focus on persuasion (which is basically because the bonus allows us a big increase that saves us 3 points). I don't think we are going to convince the Daimyo or get contacts in court no matter how much we increase our social skills this turn as we don't have enough xp to get that big of one but this is a rare chnce to improve skills that we have barely touched yet we use constantly. I had talked about increasing Agility instead but we have no bonus on it. We will have to see if more taijutsu training will help with that.

Oh, and I raise fuinjutsu by 2 instead of 3 because it saves an xp every 5xp spent.

[x] Focus on talking with her teammates.
[x] Study the books Emiko will be having them read, and work on Fuinjutsu.

By the way, I have been wondering for a while but, does Dextery influence how good we are with our instruments?

[X] Lord of the Sound
Ninja Art: Sound Dampening - Rank 1 (50 xp)

I like it because it's an original jutu, not something off a scroll. Something that will belong only to Shizue. It'll be a great benefit to stealth... and killing people without a sound, if necessary.

[X] Practice her music for the meeting.
[X] See if there's anyone interesting along the way to talk to.

While nothing is at stake but our pride, our pride demands that we put on a great performance. That means a little extra music practice.

I'd like for the social activity to be practice talking to random strangers. We've gotten good about talking to our teammates and we'll have chances to talk to them in the future, but we're on a journey alone and unsupervised. This is a chance to reach out and talk to people we would never ordinarily meet; really expand our horizons. Who know what could be in the mystery box? Something fun I bet.

EDIT: Admittedly, it's also because I still don't like Saya and Genta and don't want to read more scenes with them. (More Genta than says; Saya is merely overexposed.)

I don't dislike the jutsu, but I don't see how getting the next rank of it now would be terribly helpful in the near future where are current rank of it would not be sufficient.
edit: If we had a secret message we needed to deliver, I could easily justify it, but as is I don't see the extra 15 ft of range as good investment for this mission.

@veekie there is something I think you are misunderstandinging about Keen Ears. The description in the update is the one for Rank 2.

I don't see that we need to focus on persuading people vs noticing things about them and socializing well. I would rather invest in other parts of the social paradigm over persuade - it doesn't fit what I want to see from Shizue.

Because whenever we need to reach a desision as a group and reach a concensus we will need to use persuasión, which is important so that what is decided to do in those situation is what the players think is best. We will also use it when we need to negotiate and convince people to see things our way. It also has a greater discount than socialize so we can save more xp by investing on it instead and while I put a heavier focus in persuasión, the increase in socialize is still the same as in the other plans that raise it. Also, investing in persuasión doesn't mean we won't raise socialize but that it is convenient to raise it now; it is not an indication of a want to focus on it instead of persuasión but that it most more economical to raise it first.

Hey umm @veekie ? Bakkasama raises a good point that the benefits of Keen Ears are minimal, would you be amenable to changing it to Whisperings ((1.1) Ninja Art: Whispering (E-rank, Rank 1) Cost-- 8 XP (Chakra Control 24, Ninjutsu 28)) and/or using the XP to buff up the Socialize and Explosives skills? Or upping the base Stats such as Perception?
