It's something the academy already teaches a lot of.

Genjutsu, lateral thinking and stealth are areas the academy sucks at.

Partially, though she is condensing it down some, and some of it is stuff the academy can't have covered because it's too advanced or even, usually, a matter of instinct. Like how to close and open distance is one thing she'll be covering that's not really much of a spoiler.

-[x] Try to sign up for a C-rank escort mission for a small merchant group. Short, boring, just guarding them as they travel from one island to another. It will take Shizue out of the village for a day or two, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

*Raises hand*

Question! Does Emiko count as a jounin we can pester for training? I know she is offering the courses but I mean one on one.

...that has the potential of being extremely stupid or extremely awesome. It is probably not the best idea, I am just curious whether that is an option. In which case it might be best stay away from it and shily stare at it from behind a post.

Okay, so, the vote closes in pretty much exactly a day! So get your votes in, people! I did have another matter to ask about, though, in general as I'm doing some rolls for what everyone else is going to be doing in the next week/outside events. And that's combat. How should it be handled? There are three models, pretty much.

1) Like in KCS and in some other systems. The voters make some basic decisions of goal/policy, but then from there I run the actions of the player character as I imagine they would do. I'd say, "Hmm, what would Shizue, based on her stats, skills, and personality, do at this point in the fight." And then see how that goes. It would make updates during fight scenes longer, since I would be doing at least enough of the fight to get to another decision point, but it would remove some 'voters deciding exact actions' from the mix, though it also likely might speed updates.

2) Like in NSMS's Ninja of the Leaf Quest. During combat each vote was [] Write-in, and you wrote in a plan. That plan might be worse, or might be better, than what the character would do themselves. Both outcomes have been seen. But the plan basically covered a smallish snatch of time in a fight, and once it got to the 'what now' part, that was posted and then another plan, etc, etc. This would increase players being able to make plans, but would mean shorter updates and fight scenes would take longer since voting would need to be done between each update.

3) Some sort of modification of two. Instead of making a plan from scratch, I'd provide 2-3, or so, ways that Shizue might go about doing something in a fight, then a write-in, and people can vote.

I'm not really asking/soliciting some sort of vote on which method to use so much as I'm just asking for opinions, thoughts, and so on. Which might influence my decision.

Option 1 works best, seeing as the plan method actually excludes voters more than adds agency. You get less vote diversity with 2 and 3 methods.

Let's learn as much as possible while we have an expert helping us. These three all mesh with our sneaky/tricky build.

This seems the best to me. Definitely goes towards the theme we're wanting.

Vote closes in one hour, get your last votes on! Also, can someone post a tally, both as an answer and in order to break me up from triple posting if there aren't any last votes.

Vote closed slightly early, but hey! However, my own predictions as to the length of this update are that it might be a while before I'm done, even if I get a full night and have the day off tomorrow (fortunately). So I won't be able to do a 'vote closed, update in 10 minutes' situation. Too long and too much, as it were. And so, in order to make it up and so that the thread doesn't sit around for 2-3 days empty, I'm again opening up IC questions and the like, now that you've gotten a first taste at some of the Genin and a little bit of the village.

@The Laurent

How much different is it for Shizue when she interacts with the Civilians as compared to the other ninja? Is she still a pariah even among the civilian populace?

Are the civilians as adamant about the whole honourable combat thing as the shinobi of Reef are? Do they generally 'hate' the citizens of Tide and Island as much as we 'hate' their shinobi?

Is there any amount of trade between Reef, Tide, and Island?

edit:
When you get the chance, could you put our Puppets info onto the Character Sheet?

She's not a pariah. The proper way to see it is like this. There might be a baron that isn't liked by the other nobles, but she's still not a filthy mud-flecked commoner with no rights. So they might be a bit cautious around her, and uncertain since some shinobi are jerks, though also *somewhat* friendly, since she's *their* ninjas, as it were. But no pariah stuff.

And, sorta...there is plenty of propoganda, and they understand that if Reef and its Ninja lost, especially here but even in other islands under Reef's domain, their lot wouldn't be that happy, and they'd at least get a lot poorer. Plus, the Ninja *are* fighting and dying...well, not for them, but at least in ways that give them benefit.

And yes, but the more intense the war period, the less trading there is, and never in anything deemed 'militarily necessary.' For instance, this spring (now passed into summer) was relatively low intensity after a rather brutal late summer (Yaramachi Jonin dies), Fall (Another Special Jonin killed), and early Winter.

Are we the only puppet-user in Reef?

Where precisely did we learn puppetry and obtain the needed supplies?

Yes, she's the only one, and that will partially be explained IC in the next update, but to note, Testbed is a stripped down version of Shizue's first puppet, which she obtained third-hand, along with a small, rather battered and only half informative, scroll. How it is third hand and how she came to get it...well, I do plan on telling that story IC through comments and maybe even flashbacks.
