Distance Learning for fun and profit...

I believe someone calculated the energy density of electron degenerate matter as 10^22 J/m^3, so 91 cubic meters of it would be ~10^24 joules.

That's BIGGATON yield... as in twice the energy released from the Chicxulub impact, so I don't think it actually came anywhere close to EDM status.

The blast probably was something closer to Sedan Crater, which was a ~100 kT yield subsurface nuke. Still more than enough to vaporize everything within a mile.

some of which will go through a very interesting fusion process.

It actually won't as it's almost entirely silicon and oxygen (rock) which need quite a bit more 'oomph' to initiate fusion than near degenerate matter collapse. If there was a lot of water (hydrogen) around then you'd get a much bigger boom than expected, but that's why it was done in the Nevada desert.

Now i want to try and work out the actual blast yield.

note that that's the crater from the implosion, where somewhere around 90 million tons of rock got crushed into a sphere less than 20 feet across.

if we assume a hemisphere 250m in radius, we get 32724923.4m^3 of rock.
average crustal density is 2800kg/m^3, for a mass of about 91.6 million metric tons.
the compression achieved is stated to approach electron degeneracy limits. White dwarfs are limited by this, and their density is on the order of 10^9kg/m^3.
using this value gives a compressed volume of 91.6297855m^3. including the air only adds another .04m^3.
end result is a sphere with a radius of about 2.8m, or just over 18 feet across.
*note i'm using a burst height of 0, not the 1.5m offset mentioned. it doesn't change things that much though.

this is where i hit a wall in attempting to work out just how violently the sphere explodes once confinement collapses.

So if I'm understanding this correctly, the math would be similar to that of a star going nova?
Gravitational Potential Energy.... lets see.... Mass of 91.6 million metric tons, gravity at 50,000g, focused into a ball 2.8m in diameter, giving us.....125,760,479,600MJ of potential energy.

Again, scaling UP the weapon isn't the problem.

I'm relatively sure that if I lived in any town within 100 miles of Ellisburg as described, that I would move. Quickly... Away... Crossing state and international boarders if necessary. I think, perhaps, there may be less witnesses than you think.

No no, those towns are withing 5km of Ellisburg. And yeah, I'm sure they have long since been abandoned. The larger cities nearby, not so much.

"No radiation worth speaking off, very little outside damage, and no chance of biological contamination," Robinson noted. "The heat of the detonation is far too high for anything to live through it. Unfortunately, scaling up the same weapon to deal with something like Ellisburg would be… impractical. We'll need a different approach in such cases."
Did you change the "dead mans hand" details?

I was under the impression that Parahumans like Bonesaw and Nilbog had a fail deadly Dead Mans Hand rather than a fail safe. Instead of requiring a signal, it requires a lack of a specific signal for a length of time - in otherwords, the person has to live, else hidden caches containing the apocalypse will open when they fail to hear their masters heartbeat.

Speak for yourself. I'm perfectly willing to pick up a rifle and march across the country to defend it. I was in JROTC in HS and the main reason I didn't go into the military is due to medicinal needs.
*Looks at Zeon's location* Is Texas still even part of the US? And obviously I was talking in a generalized "we" not a literal definition "we".

Also, the edit button exists, and four minutes is not the minimal time limit for multiple posts back to back according to what posting etiquette I am aware of. And yes, two posts four minutes apart with no other posts in between is still multiple posts back to back. Pedantic, I know, but still.

So what you're saying is "Not Enough Boom"? Because that's what I'm hearing.

I'm saying that they can't use a weapon like that against Ellisburg because what they just did to Jack and company was probably as small as they COULD make it. And making it any larger increases the yield much, MUCH faster than is acceptable.

Using a dinosaur+ killer on the Goblin King isn't a good idea.

You know this is one of the few actions that RCB might actually be quite happy about. She will be overjoyed, remember these are the people that killed hero. She might just send DARPA some nice liquor for this Service.
maybe already mentioned, but didn't cauldron WANT the s9 around? Part of their cause as many triggers as possible plan? Even if she personally would be glad to see them dead, having "the plan" messed with isn't gonna make her happy. Also, if "regular" people start taking out dangerous capes, the "feudalism with parahumans at the top" thing wouldn't work either.

Of course those could both be fanon, my memory is all kinds of messed up....

Oh I'm fully aware of that, but what about Zion? Pop open a portal, throw an ultra-high-yield GravBomb(TM) through, and watch physics cower in fear as the Golden Idiot gets c r o n c h e d.

I'm pretty sure Cauldron or Simurgh are either to blame for Nilbog still being alive. Any of the triumvirate can solo Nilbog and his creatures if they wanted to.

There are probably a lot of solutions not involving gravity bombs. Heck they should ask Taylor if they can't think of anything else.

Texas is indeed still part of the USA. I find it amazing that California and New York still are considering how horribly expensive the cost of living is in either state.

As to my posts being back-to-back... I replied to posts from 2 pages and 1 page from the end of the thread with 4 minutes between them. Am I supposed to be omniscient? How would I know that the posts went up that way and nobody else had posted in 4 minutes? I don't read every post of the entire thread, usually I just reply to the author and then to anyone that quotes me.

Bonesaw and Nilbog had a fail deadly Dead Mans Hand

Bonesaw whips up her plague bombs during actual runs. She probably keeps samples of things like Ebola+ and Gamma Anthrax on/in her just in case, but actual things like her canon prion plague she doesn't keep around.

Even if she did have something nasty in the RV, it's very much not an issue anymore.

Thanks for the math input everyone!

So we can instantly see that this thing isn't pushing the Chandrasekhar limit since there's still a habitable planet left. There's probably a design note somewhere saying "do NOT use more power!!!"

Though i bet this is the only device they're going to be allowed to use before the devices get added in with the nuclear test ban treaties.

Considering basically everybody in CA is moving away, to the point former Californians are calling it "The Exodus", I doubt CA will stay that way for more than another decade.

What device? The town got hit by a meteor impact. /s

In all seriousness, nobody except people very high up the chain will ever know it wasn't a meteor. This is classified all the way to the top, and will be for decades at minimum if it's ever declassified at all.

It isn't hidden caches, it was "you have to basically reduce her to component atoms or their corpse will release the zombie-virus and face huggers". They don't have anything set up that gets a signal from them, since that signal could be tracked. Anything they come up with to transmit the signal, some other tinker can figure out as well. All apocalypses are local, just with a rapid-enough airborne spreading to be deadly on a continental scale at minimum.

As to Nilbog, it was less a fail-deadly system and more semi-sentient creatures going made when their parental figure dies, combined with specially designed reactions for certain events. If Ellisburg got nuked, then there were creatures and plagues that would release and grow based on the heat and other radiation released. Nilbog also created creatures so he could survive a nuke inside them. Remember, Nilbog was actually getting close to dying of old age and poor nutrition by the time of Golden Morning.

The problem with the Triumvirate trying it is that Nilbog by canon can and has made a bunch of goblin hyper-viruses and bacteria and fungus that do crazy shit like super multiply if exposed to fire. So they could kill his macro-monsters, but then his micro-monsters would spread through the atmosphere as a dead mans switch

Well okay - a one time disarming signal that they use when they decide to renew or replace the cache.
But I do get what both of you are saying. The emphasis on "deadlocked cause M.A.D." by Wildbow made me think that it was elegantly designed to take as many human lives as possible in all circumstances. Instead, if you sufficiently incinerate them and the surrounding areas the threat is neutralized. What a fucking joke.

Instead, saturation-carpet bombing with nukes could probably deal with it. This is what I get for going only by word of Wildbow I suppose.

Guest Omake - Becky Has A Snit
I actually don't do this. Like at all.

However, I can't wait for mppi, so I'll have to write it. Here's an omake.

The assembled members of the Joint Chiefs, the President, and those of his cabinet looked on as the mushroom cloud cleared. Secretary Robinson had a small grin on his face as he looked at all the dropped jaws surrounding him.

"As you can see, gentlemen, this is a practical demonstration of the technology that is available due to the research that Gravtec is involved in. While only a prototype, the device was nonetheless effective in eliminating a group that has been a constant thorn in our sides for the last twenty years." Robinson's smirk grew as his gaze fell on Rebecca Costa-Brown. Her scowl was sufficient to curdle milk. I wonder how long she'll last before giving herself enough rope to hang herself? He didn't have to wait long.

"I was under the distinct impression that handling parahuman groups was the responsibility of the PRT, not the U.S. military." Costa-Brown leaned into the table to drive her point further. "I have had just about all I can take Robinson! First you abrogate my authority by hiding the evidence of parahuman involvement with Gravtec! Then you go over my head and get approval to detonate an untested nuclear device on American soil! I'm no long willing to settle with whatever answers you've given me concerning these issues. I want the truth gentlemen. I'm no longer willing to accept the stonewalling I've received since that tanker in Brockton Bay was moved by what is obviously some form of tinker-tech."

Doctor Calhoun took this opportunity to interject. "First of all, as these readouts demonstrate, there was no nuclear material involved in the deployment of the device. Just application of the same sort of physics that lifted the tanker. As to the rest; as repeatedly stated, Gravtec doesn't have a parahuman on staff. We've repeatedly told you that Costa-Brown. You refuse to accept that; you refuse to accept that someone is telling you 'no', and making it stick. We had an opportunity to deliver a weapon to deal with one of the worst domestic S Class threats on American soil, and we took it. Your approval wasn't needed, and wouldn't have even if parahumans had been involved."

Rebecca's scowl only deepened. "So, you all decided to approach the President on this, without even informing my office that this was being considered." The Chief-Director let out a huff of anger. "I'm far too used to the other Alphabet Soup agencies leaving me out of the loop. It's all part of the political game. What I'm not used to is decisions concerning my goddamn remit being made without my involvement. If that's something you're all willing to do, then why does my position even exist?"

"Why indeed," President Lawson stated. "In all honesty Costa-Brown, I've been asking myself the same question." The President typed a few lines on the laptop before him, bringing up a far different graph on the holographic display. "A proper examination of past actions is demonstrating the fact that your organization has been doing its best to sandbag against parahuman threats." He raised a hand to stop Rebecca's heated response. "Granted, they do provide the benefit of being canon fodder for the Endbringers, something that I no longer find acceptable."

"Frankly, Rebecca Costa-Brown, you're a relic of a prior administration that I've struggled to deal with since I was elected. Judicious inquiries has led me to confirm that you were involved in lobbying to pass many of the draconian laws that are forcing parahumans to work for the PRT. I don't like that. I don't like that citizens of this country have been denied gainful employment due to the NEPEA-5 laws. Laws that you were a driving force behind."

Lawson swept his arm at the assembled brass. "The reason I called this meeting was to discuss more options in effectively dealing with the S Class threats. One of those is to treat the PRT as a part of the military, as should have been done from the beginning. The Congressional Committee on Parahuman Affairs has already given the approval I need to make the changes needed, starting with yours and Tagg's dismissal from the agency."

Rebecca's scowl could have fractured glass. "You have no idea what you're doing, sir. Dismissing me is a mistake." He only smirked.

"I suggest you take your retirement in stride. Just be lucky that I'm only giving you a dismissal; I actually have classified grounds to have you arrested. Which will happen if you make good on your implied threat." Lawson waved to the Secret Service detail that was in the conference room. "Would you gentlemen kindly escort Ms. Costa-Brown to her car? Her office is already being examined under warrant." They nodded, moving towards the woman. Her glare intensified as she was led out of the room.

"This isn't over Lawson; not by a long shot."

An artificially generated gravitational field instantly sprang into life, exerting a force of nearly fifty thousand g over a zone more than two hundred meters in radius. Everything in that zone was pulled towards the center at over four hundred and ninety kilometers per second squared, the entire spherical zone collapsing into nearly degenerate matter almost instantly. It happened so quickly that to the outside observer it was as if a crater close to half a kilometer across and a quarter deep simply appeared in the ground.

I think the time is too short or the gravity field too weak. 50,000 g's at 1 ms is a final speed of 500m/s, and objects only move by .25 m. It sounds horrifically fast since humans die at 50+ g's, but nowhere near fast enough for degenerate matter or exotic effects. The 9 would hit each other and everything within 200 m in less than half a second, so they are very dead, but I don't think it would generate enough heat/plasma to sterilize Bonesaw's plagues

... Soooo, does Taylor's S9 killer prototype have a name or identifier? Something like "Graviton-Thermal Fixed-height Ordnance"?

"This better be important, Contessa." Rebecca groused as she emerged from the Door. "I think I was finally making some headway regarding all the stonewalling I'm getting from the Pentagon."

"The Slaughterhouse Nine are dead."

"What?"

"Seventeen minutes ago every Path I had running that involved them abruptly ended."

"They're ALL dead? Even Manton?" As much as she wanted to kill the bastard who tore half her face off, Contessa had ensured her time and again that he was critical to the Path. "Any idea as to how?"

"I believe I know." Kurt said, emerging from another Door. "It seems Jacob and his current crop of associates met with a spectacular bit of bad luck." He sat down and turned his laptop toward them, the screen showing live footage from a news helicopter.

"This is Troy McClure reporting live from the KUTV news chopper. I'm flying now towards the site of some massive explosion to the northwest of the city. Seismometers have recorded the epicenter approximately 20 kilometers southeast of the small town of Jackpot, Nevada." A map of the area showed the site, before switching back to the camera facing forward, showing a distinct mushroom cloud in the distance. "Officials from the Utah Test and Training range are ensuring us that this was NOT a nuclear device, and several scientists from BYU have said that based on the seismic records, this was in fact a meteorite impact."

"A meteorite?" Rebecca gaped in shock. "Is there any evidence that that dammed bitch floating in orbit was responsible?"

"No, Dragon's monitoring of the Simurgh has shown no indication of activity since her latest attack. Totally quiescent." Kurt replied.

The strongest woman in the world collapsed bonelessly in her chair, running the implications for this through her mind. "Well. Fuck."
