Deedeequest or The Wonders of Mundus: Be Careful Who You Pretend To Be - A Genderous Isekai Quest

How Dice Rolls Work
Character sheet is here.

Dice rolls are 1d10 + Stat + Proficiency + any applicable bonuses, such as Boons.

You may spend 3 Tension to Overdrive for a retroactive +5 to your roll (a Determination Overdrive), or +3 to an ally's roll (a Teamwork Overdrive). I will also automatically overdrive to avoid exhaustion or unconsciousness.

It is possible to critically succeed (on +5 on skill checks and +10 on combat rolls) or critically fail (by the same margins), but rolling a 1 or a 10 does not automatically crit in either case. It is possible to crit retroactively by Overdriving.

Your stat bonuses have names:
  • Vigor grants a Strength bonus.
  • Agility grants a Dexterity bonus.
  • Spirit grants an Aura bonus.
  • Mind grants an Intuition bonus.
  • Resolve grants a Guts bonus.
Dice are rolled on a first come, first serve bonus. You only roll for Deedee.

When we need to make a detour, we should go:
[X] [DETOUR] Down a riverboat. (Uses Sekhmet's Intuition+Stewardship, with a setback if you fail.)

When we need to stop at an inn, we should get on the village's good side by:
[X] [INN] Learning and participating in the harvest rites. (Mandatory; vote for this and one other. Uses Deedee's Aura+Mysticism.)
[X] [INN] Helping with a broken machine. (Uses Hikaru's Intuition+Science+Gnomic.)

We'll spend free time training, and talking with (Approval voting, best three win, there are more opportunities to talk than these):
[X] [TALK] Ace. I really need to thank her for helping me, and teach her a little char-op.
[X] [TALK] Hikaru. I like him, and he knows more about this world than the rest of us combined.
[X] [TALK] Tayeb and Shadi. This trip wouldn't be possible without them, and they've made this trip before; they know the way.

No. No, it's exactly what Jules would have done, once they knew that the rent was paid up, the fridge was full, and there was enough after this to sock away for an emergency. It's not that this isn't like them; it's that this is the first time they've had cause to relax or celebrate since they got to Mundus, and they'll be damned if they pass it up.

*Toasts them in 10$/5th craft gin and $1/L tonic.* Mood. Mood and a half, lately.

Oh, Lord. I know this song. I love this song. This next bit is going to frog punch me right in the fucking heart, isn't it?

There's a moment of unbearable tension,

That moment really is the absolute fucking worst. At least if it goes poorly you know. You can find a place to mourn and start to move on. Or at least try.

And then she laughs.

"Uh?" you say, helpfully.

It starts tense and unhinged

And there goes my heart into the bit of my stomach.
but only for a moment before it becomes actual sweet laughter, golden bells tolling out mirth.

And then she's hugging you, and you aren't sure why, but it is nice, and hugging her back seems like a good enough idea so you may as well?

Jesus H. Titty-Fucking Christ!
I wish all coming out went that way for queer folks. Also, if not for the no chan-posting rule, I'd have to dust of my old "They had us in the first half" reaction .gif there.

She smiles at you, and you have to take a step back at it. "Thank you for walking with me, Deedee," she says.

And that feels incredible. "Thanks for inviting me," you say.

Well, I'm crying now, but in a good way. <3
Between this and the Berserk last chapter leak earlier...fuck.

Thank you again, so much, for writing this story.

SIAMÉS continues to be a mood for a lot of this; I've been running a lot of their album Home while I've been writing it, and the OP for this volume has been All The Best in my head.

Chapter title followed by more of the song it's from said:
Shining high, rumbles in the dark
Torn apart devil in disguise
There's no lullabyes
In this nowhere land.

What's the meaning when you have a broken home? (Home, home)
Where's the love when you were left on your own? (So alone)

Thank you for being the audience I didn't know I'd find. For a long time I thought this story would have an audience of one; I'm glad that my estimates were extremely conservative, and I posted it anyway.

I've had too many moments of that fear, even if most of it was unfounded, like this was.

[X] [DETOUR] Through the woods. (Uses a guide's Guts+Survival+Thornite, with combat if you fail.)

[X] [INN] Participating in the festival games. (Uses Ace's Dexterity+Athletics.)

[X] [TALK] Ace. I really need to thank her for helping me, and teach her a little char-op.
[X] [TALK] Sekhmet. We should catch up more with our roommate, and take a look at our finances while we're at it.
[X] [TALK] Tayeb and Shadi. This trip wouldn't be possible without them, and they've made this trip before; they know the way.

I've had too many moments of that fear, even if most of it was unfounded, like this was.

A core part of the transfemme experience, for those of us not so lucky as to transition early and smoothly, is that exact fear: that no one will relate to or understand what feels like a completely alone and alienated experience. Ironically, that sense of isolation and alienation? It's one of our biggest commonalities.

United in isolation, a right bunch of paradoxes we are.

EDIT: It's why we live for found family tropes. Because at the end of the day, that's what we want.

Charge Question: what kinds of techs do Hikaru and Sekhmet have besides damage? Are they pure DPS or is there some control in there? We've more or less seen Ace, Alesha, and of course Deeds in action, but I could use a refresher on any more esoteric abilities our squishies have.

Hikaru:
Can set buffing magic circles that increases the spell power of those within it. His Fireball is Persistent, setting down a damage zone; his Frost Lance is Immobilizing, and his Chain Lightning breaks shields. Elfshot Barrage just hits multiple targets very hard.

Sekhmet:
Has multiple debuffs, including a Clinging Smoke Bomb that shrouds an area in darkness (as well as the darksight to use it), Dirty Tricks to throw foes off-guard, and Ennervating Poison that confuses and reduces the evasion of foes struck by it.

Ace:
Actually has a debuff in Guard Crush, which reduces enemy armor.

[X] [CHARGE] In terms of assets, we have three skirmishers/close DPS, a ranged DPS, a ranged DPS/Control, a tank, and two half-healers. In terms of liabilities, we have the non-combatants and the cart. Obviously to start with, the merchants stay with the cart, and our archer friend and, if possible, Hikaru should also stay with it, using it as a portable platform and serving as the last line of defense. Deedee, Ace, and Sekhmet should form an outer ring of combatants, ideally striking down any monsters or bandits before they can get close, or failing that tying them down so Hikaru or the archer can pick them off. Alesha, being the main defender but lacking mobility, will need to be between these two groups, moving to cover or heal as needed. Conveniently, everyone I'm putting on the perimeter is either specced for stealth (Sekhmet) or immune to surprise (Deedee and Ace thanks to their racial), giving us a good chance of the outer ring being able to counter any ambushes.

For specific tactics, Deedee needs to make sure to stay inside the ranged characters' tech range, so no Kaiser Kick as an opener - use it for mobility instead. Her current Flaw combo means that she's not going to heal/cleanse/buff much without burning a lot of tension, but hasting Alesha is also a very good idea if she can spare the action/breath. Hikaru is the central artillery piece and can self-buff and control the flow of enemy movement with his spells. Sekh can blind and surprise groups, although she needs to be careful with her darkness since I don't think anyone else in the party gets Darkvision. Alesha should focus on defense and gathering threat, while Ace wails on things in measured form as threat allows.

[X] [CHARGE] Separate into two groups. Alesha, Hikaru, and the archer stay close to the cart - Hikaru can probably stand on top - with Alesha blocking for the ranged fighters (and providing healing if needed) while they snipe. Ace, Sekhmet and Deedee are on interception duty - Ace and Sekhmet will range out around the cart as strikers, while Deedee hangs back a little in support, at a midpoint between them and the cart/sniper team; Deedee can then move to back up the strikers, engage and distract other mobs if they're busy, or run back and forth between the two groups to provide healing/other support as needed.

I must emphasize my love for Ace and her creator a little more strongly than usual with this image that got into my head.

Also, I must apologize, not for my lack of skill with Paint.NET, but rather my patience to actually get the lines perfect. If I'm making a weird joke about this, I feel wrong committing too much effort to it.

As for my votes...

[] [DETOUR] Up a hill. (Uses Alesha's Muscle+Athletics+Auroran, with exhaustion if you fail.)

While I am interested in what the setback would be if we failed the river, exhaustion feels like the least severe risk and thus we're better off playing it safe.

[X] [INN] Learning and participating in the harvest rites. (Mandatory; vote for this and one other. Uses Deedee's Aura+Mysticism.)
[X] [INN] Participating in the festival games. (Uses Ace's Dexterity+Athletics.)

Honestly, I'm going festival games just because it'll likely be the most fun.

For conversations...
[X] [TALK] Ace. I really need to thank her for helping me, and teach her a little char-op.
[X] [TALK] Alesha. Things are still tense and she needs to know she's doing fine, and can lean on me a bit.
[X] [TALK] Tayeb and Shadi. This trip wouldn't be possible without them, and they've made this trip before; they know the way.

Obviously, I'm an Ace fan - enough to make that thing up above. But also, I feel like helping both Ace and Alesha out will be good for party cohesion - and also just make Ace become very good at hitting people in the head with things much harder than very strange fruit.

Tayeb and Shadi... Well, I've noticed something with Tayeb I'm hoping Deedee will also notice.

[X] [CHARGE] Write-in combat tactics given what you know about the party. We will be gaining an archer, as well as two non-combatants and a supply cart we can't afford to lose. Ask me any questions you need about this. The best plans will be discussed ICly with Warmaster Alesha.

We've got a few probable scenarios to deal with based on this prompt. We'll presumably have two objectives:
- Defeat or drive off any attacking enemies
- The two non-combatants and the cart MUST be fine at the end of combat. We do not know, and ideally do not want to find out the hard way, how much damage the noncombatants can take before falling; we can safely assume that if the cart takes significant damage, our journey WILL get delayed while it gets repaired (Deedee logically can't heal the cart with healing hands, as funny as that image is in my mind!)

The basic scenarios are "Being attacked from one direction" or "Multiple directions"; each must be dealt with in a different way. I'm also making an assumption we're not up against an overwhelming force; from a meta standpoint, we've got a six-person party. Assuming enemies of equal level (in Valor, you should generally assume that - just +1 or -1 level is vastly larger than in most D&D editions), an average level-appropriate force is a combination that adds up to the party's size:
- One Master enemy counts as four
- One Elite enemy counts as two
- One Soldier enemy counts as one
- One Minion enemy counts as one-half

Masters are usually reserved for major boss fights, which doesn't seem to be the case here. So, we've got a force of anywhere from something like three bandits who each fight as good as a PC, to twelve idiots that get KO'd in one hit apiece. All this is meta-knowledge, though it's not entirely out of realm Alesha could spot a vaguely similar pattern based on gameplay norms and put them to bear when crafting the baseline tactic.

A similar base pair of tactics applies regardless within this range:
- Focus on keeping enemies away from the cart, where we place our noncombatants; place our archer friend and Hikaru on the cart, where they can see in multiple directions and focus on punishing those trying to slip up to the cart away from our main press.
- Alesha in front, Deeds and Ace to either side, and Sekhmet starting in the back in a basic diamond formation, form the start of a straight up press on the main wave of enemies, Alesha's shield up to cover initial strikes. Deeds prioritizes healing Alesha over Sekh or Ace - when the straight-up fight starts, there's a nonzero chance Sekh will be out of range to get the right angle for sneak attacks, while Ace is a Berserker and wants at least some damage to get to full force. Deeds also strikes as she can, but conserves stamina - keeping the team, or if things start turning bad, noncombatants, up is more important than bringing enemies down.

All of this assumes the archer is Known to be friendly; if there's any risk of not trusting them, then we want to leave one person on backline near the archer and Hikaru - Ace is probably the most logical pick, being armored and, especially if we get that conversation, thoroughly capable of a punishing maneuver.

We may also want to split Ace off if we expect a two-pronged attack where the enemies will first show up near the cart; in that situation, we also have to fight near it, which is decidedly not optimal, but necessary for Deeds to be in a position to get in healing range of all involved.

If we're up against a force well larger than what I'm describing, we either need to find and quickly take advantage of an opportunity such as a chokepoint to reduce their ability to leverage those numbers on us - or we need to do an active flee, everyone on the cart, blast our enemies while we retreat. Presumably, this will involve enemies jumping onto the cart and us cooly punching them off of it, because that's just the standard for this type of fiction if you actively flee while on a horse-drawn cart.

I like that we're at least all on board with using the cart as mobile high ground for the wizard and archer, although Inc's interpretation is by far the most thorough.

Also I want to bring up while we're talking that I think we should **Overdrive our Aura roll**. It's a high TN task we can hit and I think it's something that could be a real benefit given how kind the gods have been thus far.

Ace! Obviously!

But also, given how, uh, Everything is going, I actually am having a small concern about our finances, and between cattefriend and merchant grandpa, we may get good knowledge.

Also, since we're posting shitposts anyway:

Agree about this. More god help is always good.

And for votes:

When we need to make a detour, we should go:
[X] [DETOUR] Through the woods. (Uses a guide's Guts+Survival+Thornite, with combat if you fail.)

When we need to stop at an inn, we should get on the village's good side by:

[X] [INN] Helping with a broken machine. (Uses Hikaru's Intuition+Science+Gnomic.)
I like the idea of carnival games but I think if we can help fix something we probably should.

We'll spend free time training, and talking with (Approval voting, best three win, there are more opportunities to talk than these):

Mostly just me operating on my own gut feelings about who I want to talk to most.

Sekh's been very reliable so far. Boat for me.
+1 to the Futest of Bol

In the interests of keeping our DC/AC social links balanced, I'm going to give these my approval:
[X] [TALK] Ace. I really need to thank her for helping me, and teach her a little char-op.
[X] [TALK] Sekhmet. We should catch up more with our roommate, and take a look at our finances while we're at it.
I like Hikaru and I like Alesha but they've gotten a lot of spotlight recently. Hobnobbing with Tayeb and Shadi sounds like a good idea in theory, but my intuition, for inscrutable reasons of its own, says "not right now thanks".

For the same reason, I'll get behind plan
[X] [INN] Participating in the festival games. (Uses Ace's Dexterity+Athletics.)
and let Ace contribute in her domain of strength.

And finally - once again with DC/AC team cohesion in mind - I want to give Sekhmet a chance to show off, and so I'll vote
[X] [DETOUR] Down a riverboat. (Uses Sekhmet's Intuition+Stewardship, with a setback if you fail.)
as the detour mode.

Also I want to bring up while we're talking that I think we should **Overdrive our Aura roll**. It's a high TN task we can hit and I think it's something that could be a real benefit given how kind the gods have been thus far.
+1 to this. I suspect that this TN15 Aura+Mysticism roll has something to do with "learning and participating in the harvest rites", since it's already established that Deedee will be doing this. And letting it fail puts the entire "can we make a good first impression on the town" issue in the hands of a single roll that'll be harder to Overdrive than this one (since we can only put +3 on it with a Teamwork OD).

Also, if not for the no chan-posting rule,
I thought that was only an SB rule? Then again, I wouldn't put it past Squishy to put it on the books for selective-enforcement harassment purposes.

Anyway, I don't even like soccer that much, but since Ace likes it...

I'm actually going to dissent on this one!

With no other information on what to expect than "idk things that exist in the world," fireballs are a part of our threat profile; it may only need to be if someone looks a bit fireball-y (or whatever), but I think skylining two of the most vulnerable members of the party on top of the escort objective makes too tempting a target.

It's possible I'm conflating the two? I usually only differentiate the three main sites as "The one that lets me hug people, the one that doesn't, and the one that permabanned me.
