I apologize for the lack of an update this afternoon. I managed to complete one half of the update, but before I could finish it I was drawn into an unexpected trip into town for errands and then a late dinner. I'll be busy tomorrow -- my aunt and cousin are taking me out for a belated birthday lunch and movie -- but hopefully I'll be able to finish writing the update that afternoon.

Bang Baby
Episode 010

November 11th, 2001

I turned around a corner and stopped in front the door to Erika's room before I knocked on it. I waited for a couple of moments until I heard shuffling on the other side.

"Urgh." I heard Erika mutter through the closed door.

The door opened and I stared at the person standing in front of me. Erika looked horrible: her hair was sticking up in odd places, there were bags underneath her eyes, her eyes themselves were read and she was wearing the same clothes that she had been wearing yesterday.

Erika stared at me for a moment before she stepped back to allow me to step inside her room. I followed her inside and shut the door behind me before I took a seat on top of a stack of boxes next to the workstation while Erika plopped down on the chair in front of it. Erika leaned forward and buried her head into her arms.

".... How much sleep did you get last night?" I asked.

"I didn't sleep at all." Erika muttered and then looked up at me. "I spent a lot of time on the Internet searching for information on the Martian Manhunter. I thought that I would be able to find something that explained how his power worked -- or something that would allow me to figure out how his power worked -- so that I could start to figure out how I could build something that would allow us to get around it somehow. But... I didn't find that much about him.

"The Martian Manhunter has been interviewed more than once since he helped defeat the Imperium and become a member of the League, but he has seemed to have made a point about not talking about himself. The few times that he actually a question about himself, he made sure to keep his answers short and to the point and give out as little information as he could."

I hadn't thought about it before, but now that Erika had pointed it out to me, I couldn't help but to believe her. In the few times that the Martian Manhunter had appeared in the news since the Imperium Invasion, he spoke short and to the point, if he spoke at all.

Erika was still talking. "People know that the Martian Manhunter can fly, phase through things, shapeshift, lift almost as much weight as Superman has been shown able to and the footage to back all of those things up. But, while we have to have footage of the times that he has used his telepathic powers, it is hard to tell when he might have used them."

I frowned.

"Since I couldn't find much about how the Martian Manhunter's power worked -- I started to search for superheroes or supervillains that had telepathic powers and see what I could learn from them." Erika said. "The problem is that there aren't a lot of superheroes or supervillains with telepathic powers -- and those heroes and villains that do have those powers haven't told people about how their powers worked.

"The only place that I can think of that might have that kind of information is the Scientific and Technological Advanced Research Labs. People say that S.T.A.R. has done a lot of research into metahumans since metahumans first started to appear -- so one of their facilities would be our best bet to find information on telepathic powers and how those powers work." Erika let out a breath. "but S.T.A.R. doesn't have any nearby facilities that we can break into to get that information anywhere near us: the closest S.T.A.R. Labs facility is in Gotham City and that's--"

"-- Batman's hometown."

Erika nodded solemnly. "...Yeah." She remained quiet for a couple of moments, staring at the wall in front of herself, before she turned toward me. "... But you didn't come to listen to me complain."

"I don't mind." I said. Erika shot me a look that told me that she didn't believe me. "I really don't mind. i need to know what kind of problems that your having so that i can try to do something about it." I frowned again. "I might not be able to do anything about S.T.A.R. Labs or the whole telepathic power thing right now, but i can be there for you to bounce ideas off of. And if listening to you complain can help you with that, then I'll listen."

Erika looked at me for a long moment and then smiled. "... If you're sure that you want to listen to me complain, I have a lot of things that I can complain about."

"I'm listening."

[X] Ear To The Ground: I should send one of the others out to talk to people that we can learn what people are talking about, but the news isn't. Most of it will probably turn out to be nothing but gossip, but there's a chance that we could learn something interesting.

[X] Recruitment Effort: I should send one of the others out to look around the place that I thought I saw that purple-skinned metahuman.

[X] Soul Power: I should look around for Little Mikey. I left it alone because I didn't want to talk about it, but it's been all I have been able to see it since then. I have to bite the bullet -- I have to talk to Little Mikey about what he did to me.

[X] Spend Time With Ron: I haven't had a chance to really talk to Ron in a while. Now that I have figured out what was up with Little Mikey, I should spend some time with Ron.

[X] S.T.A.R. Labs: I should head online to see what I can find out about the Gotham City S.T.A.R. Labs facility and the other S.T.A.R. Labs facilities 'close' to Dakota City. Erika will need the information S.T.A.R. Labs has on metahumans if she wants to make something to block telepathic powers, and I want to see if there is a chance we can get it.

Thanks for the chapter. Very well written.
Also if we don't know the effects of binding a person's soul are. For all we know we could have some major weaknesses due to it. We need to know what the effects are before something happens

jeez, Erika sounds like she is well on her way to becoming crazy genius #497. I don't know if we should promote this behavior or not, but either way we need to teach the girl pacing. Jumping straight to unraveling the Martian Manhunter's Telepathy is like running face first into the final boss after skipping the rest of the game. She needs to work on the stuff she can fix, like walls that are not suggestions to anyone with strength above "eternal mook".

Anyways, I'm good with any of the options but S.T.A.R. Labs. It sounds a little too hot to handle for us at the moment. Although I'm leaning closer to Recruitment or Talking with Ron at the moment. Since we still seem to be in the housekeeping mood for the past few updates.

[x] Monetization: I should figure out a way for the gang to reliably make money legally.

:V

Probably will change this vote to Soul Power. I'm just curious how their finances are doing before they start feeling it necessary to rob warehouses again, and inevitably get Static on their tail again. ^_^

You're welcome lockingbane. It might take me some time to find time to write when things get hectic, but I love writing Bang Baby and I love hearing back from people.

Yeah.

Erika is not as smart as Gear or Tech, but when she sets her mind on something, she makes sure that she gets that something done. It usually helps her finish things ahead of time, but it also makes her tend to obsess over things that she thinks she has to do.

It would be difficult to break into S.T.A.R. Labs, hack into their database, find their files on telepathic metahumans and be able to get away with that information before Batman,Batgirl and/or Robin intervened but not impossible.

Just imagining what Erika could do with that information.... it scares me.
Since we still seem to be in the housekeeping mood for the past few updates.
Hurry up and deal with the Meta-Breed, Justice League!

The Dockside Devils' finances are a little low at the moment: if the Devils want to keep being able to buy the (snack) food that they've been subsisting on, they'll need to plan their next heist. The only reason it wasn't a vote option at the moment was because the Devils are laying low until the League deals with the Meta-Breed.

[X] Recruitment Effort: I should send one of the others out to look around the place that I thought I saw that purple-skinned metahuman.

The only purple meta I remember melted into goo, I curious about who this is.

what about the rubber guy?
band man is purple but he's also a thief. .. it might be him which is great if it's not it's probably a new guy/shapshifter
The mutagenic gas that was responsible for the mutations of hundreds of people in Dakota City is purple -- and a lot of metahumans have purple mutations, purple tint to their powers, or gain a purple tint in their eyes when they use their powers.

There are not a lot of metahumans that are shown to have purple skin in Static Shock -- there are 'Boil', 'Goo', Onyx and Tantrum -- but there are probably a lot that weren't seen.

I might hop on the Monetization train as well, Erika needs money to (reliably) get parts to work with, and we still need to fund the Dockside Devil's sweet sweet Ms. McGuffin's Homestyle Muffins diet (now in birthday cake flavor!).

... if I was there I would be going mad. I am one of those people who has to cook meals themselves or it just Isn't Right™. I just cringe at zero effort "cooking".

I apologize for the delay. I had intended to close the vote and then start to write the next chapter sometime around 12:00 PM or 2:00 PM on Wednesday after my second cousin took her second/third nap -- to make up for the lack of progress on the edits and the lack of consistent updates -- but I was alerted to a potentially dangerous situation between my mother and my step-father.

My step-father didn't take the news that his father has cancer well -- and he started to take out those emotions on my mother. It has gotten to the point where he has actually 'physically cornered [her] in the house', 'threw a glass pan at [her]', and made her feel that if she left him she would have to leave in the middle of the night while he was asleep and unprepared for it. I wanted to drive over there that instant, take my mother, sister and dog out of there and leave my step-father behind to take his emotions on something other than them.

The only reason that I didn't was because I can't drive -- and because my grandmother's hands can't handle the eight hour trip there and back would take to do what I wanted to do.

At the moment, my mother has told my step-father that he either needs to get help or she will take my sister and leave, and things have settled into an uneasy peace where everyone seems to be trying to pretend that what happened didn't happen.

*deep breath*

I don't know what is [something] to happen next, but I'm going to try to write a chapter for Bang Baby tomorrow to help me get my mind off of this horrible situation since I am not watching my second cousin. I don't know if I'll manage it, or if it will be that long of a chapter, but I'll try. and, hopefully, either the next chapter or the chapter after that will include a scene of Justice League vs. Meta-Breed.

Dude, I've been in almost the exact same situation. The only difference is that i was the one getting hit and it happened every time my step-dad got drunk. I spent years in that environment before he screwed up, and left some evidence to show my mom (a bruise on my face with an imprint of his college ring). Your family should stay in a hotel and avoid him for a couple of days. If this isn't the first time this has occured you need to go to the police (i wish my brother had) they should be trained to deal with "domestic disturbances". You don't have to follow my advice, but that is, as someone who has gone through abuse, my advice.

Bang Baby
Episode 010

November 12th, 2001
I silently berated myself. I should have seen it coming, should have known that I could not have put this off, should have known that I would have to deal with this. I had seen Thomas and Ron leave the room to talk about it, had seen Thomas send out Gabriel and Little Mikey and Erika do it, and had been sent out to do it myself on more than one occasion: I should have planned to do something about it since I had stepped up as leader. I would not have felt the amount of frustration I had felt in the last few days if I had done planned ahead -- and the others wouldn't have looked at me like they had started to either.

I had learned that I didn't need to eat unless I wanted to or needed to replace the mass I used to create a replicant clone, but I had made a lot of replicant clones in the last few days and had been hungry. I had seen the issue when I had opened the kitchen cupboards, had known the moment I had started to eat, and had tried not to think about it. But now we were nearly out of food, and the others were looking at me, and I didn't have the money to purchase food or the lack of self-preservation it would take to rob a store while the league were in town.

'Idiot, idiot, idiot!'

Listening to Ron's suggestion that I step up as the leader of the Dockside Devils might have been a little short sided: I had never had to make sure so many people's needs were met. I had been a part of the Dockside Devils for some time, which meant that I had a reasonable knowledge of their needs, but other than the time that Thomas had me fetch some groceries, I had never had to be responsible before. Now it was up to me -- and I was learning that being able to meet all of their needs was more than I had thought it would be.

And this was just food...!

Before I did anything else, I went through the foreclosed house the others and I lived in, searching for some money that I could head to the store with. Erika had a bad habit of leaving bits and pieces of her things or the things she was working on all over the place -- which included her share of the money we brought in -- and I thought that I had seen some money in Ron's room, but I didn't know if it would be enough money to buy all the food I would need with that.

It wasn't enough.

I made one of my small snake-sized replicant clones move out of my room and move towards Ron's room before I made it peak its head underneath the door. I made it look around for Ron, wait until he started to move toward his closet, and then dart out in the direction of the money on his makeshift dresser. I made it split open its head and then clamp its newly-formed mouth around the money before I made it start to move toward the door.

'... I don't know how much money that is, but it should be enough to allow me to buy a few more things.' I thought as I made the replicant clone slip under the door and start to move toward me. 'Even if it isn't enough, as long as there aren't security camera in the store, I can store a couple of things inside of me or send a couple of replicant clones in later. I'll have to be careful, but as long as I avoid attention, I should be able to pull this off.'

"What the hell...?" The replicant clone heard Ron [something]. "There's slime on the floor. Why is there slime on the floor?"

I bent down as I made the replicant clone bend upwards to take the money from it. 'Ron didn't tell me that he had this much money....' I thought as I slipped the three ten dollar bills inside my pocket. I stood up and climbed down the staircase before I started to move toward the front door. 'Hopefully, I'll be able to pay him back for it soon.'

"... Susan!"

XxX=-=XxX
"You need to watch this, Susan." Ron said as I stepped into the room, his eyes looking straight at the television. "You need to come over and watch this right now."

Ron looked like he had after he had come back to their old base after we had fought True Blu, his clothes ruffled and a little more torn than usual, as tense as I had ever seen him. I took a moment to look around the room to find that Erika and Little Mikey were also there and also staring at the television before I turned toward the television.

"Is that...?" I asked.

Ron didn't turn from the television. "Yeah. It is."

Superman flew upward and out of sight to avoid the hand of the towering shadowed figure that had attempted to grab him. The camera tilted upward to show Superman just as his fist came into contact with the shadowed figure -- a larger version of Ebon -- face and knocked him back. Green energy lanced downward from out of sight to hit ebon in the chest, force him to his knees, and then start to form a band around his midsection to keep his arms pinned.

"Is it...?"

"Yeah."

The band shook for a moment and then broke apart into hundreds of pieces.

"How...?"

"I don't know. It happened before any of us saw."

Well, you could try, but until replication is better, it'll just split Susan's attention.
