Esquestria: The House of the Sun - A pony cultist experience

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
Dear reader! Whether you are new here, archive-reading and whatnot, or you are already someone who has been with us for quite a while, I would like to say a few words that I believe are best kept close to mind.

-This is an MLP quest. And more importantly, none of us are gratuitously cruel. So good things will happen on this quest, and I hope that enough good things have already happened to prove that.
-This is also a horror quest, so bad things will happen. Bad things might happen to good characters if you are not able to protect them, and you most certainly will not be able to intervene if you lack the tools to do so.
-And finally, this is a quest in which you jostle with powers greater than yourself, with all that it entails.

Please, do keep those things in mind as you go forward. But ultimately, this is also a quest in which it is hoped we all have fun! So if any of the above points is not exactly your cup of tea, or somehow make the experience as a whole "not worth it", then this quest might not be for you. Which is fine! Individual tastes are a thing, so don't think any more about it if you don't want to read anymore. And regardless, I hope you have a lovely day!

PSA for whoever needs to hear it:

Readers should take their own mental health into consideration when voting and not subject themselves to triggering narrative elements like rape or constant mental torture of a friend just for the Greatest Good of a world that doesn't exist.

If those are fine for you or Regrettable is even more triggering, then GREAT! More power to you. But you aren't a bad or selfish person for picking the option that keeps the characters you've emotionally connected with safe. [REDACTED for spoiler warning]

This is a high intensity quest that doesn't hold back when it comes to horror and negative consequences. Take care of yourself.

You're forgetting that we can use an Artifact as a focus, as well. A Level Four Artifact would let us act as we had Level Four, as well as sacrifice the Level Three, which together would create a base of +70. Add Jade's cadre for +10 and whoever is providing the magic score—which should probably be at least +10– and we'll have at least a +90. More if Jade actually does improve her cadre. Meanwhile a Level Four Edge focus would just give us a straight Sixty, no sacrifice required.
Nah, I wasn't forgetting it. I was just thinking that the extra 10, while it certainly helps, is also not strictly necessary. and in any case if we're going to sacrifice one heartifact for the first ritual, we'll likely have to sacrifice the +40 for the second one, unless we can also get a THIRD heartifact by then.

And about Edge... well, I wasn't considering sacrificing it. Its value comes from the bonus, the scraps, and its effect. we don't need to sacrifice it for anything, luckily.

about the cadre's +10, we can use it for healing us, but we have no idea if we'll be able to use it for healing SELENE. Maybe, maybe not. It really depends on how openly we want to act, as we won't be able to keep everyone present silent about this, so the Master will IMMEDIATELY (or close to it) learn that we have sheltered Luna all this time.

He'd probably learn of it anyway, but this way we don't get much time to prepare. After healing her, IF ALL GOES WELL, we basically have to immediately plan for the near future (likely a "teleport away, talk to Luna in private, then decide if to go to Master or Celestia for the next step)

Just something I'll say.

By no means am I implying that some choices are more correct than others. But in some cases, some choices are certainly more optimized.

Having someone (Rarity or otherwise) perform the "search for artifact" roll will have them roll for a search, for an artifact of random(?) Lore. Said roll can be a 2 or a 100, and the Lore can be any(?). Plus, if said character does not have an innate Secret Histories to them, they won't get as many bonuses as SV would like for our renowned min/maxing habits.

Having that same character ask the merchants will lock the Lore and the Level (up to 3). You don't risk having a bad roll and finding a level 1 Lantern artifact, for example, but you also don't risk critting and finding a... something better.

Anyways, said judgement is up to you. Just saying.

Also.

Also, @BirdBodhisattva, what happens when we sleep, if we don't add the Mansus to our 5+1 actions that turn? Do we still dream? Do we just sit in the Crossroads planning our day? Do we go into a trance where Velvet better aligns herself with the will of holy SV?
You haven't had a normal dream ever since your Knock Revelation. You haven't "accidentally" entered the Mansus again either, but now it is as simple as "sliding" into it, without performing any mane-cutting ritual or otherwise.

You still opt not to enter the Mansus without wanting to, because you very much rather mentally prepare yourself before doing that.

That said, entering the Mansus every single night is narratively possible, all things considered. But it is also very foolish, and something Velvet knows better not to do.

She could cradle a book to sleep while continuing reading it!
This is equal parts likely, adorable, and somewhat disturbing enough to show those slight (and worrying) signs of lunacy.

I love it.

From the last update, it sounds like she will only pay us until we get back the 300 bits we spent in the first place.
It specifically mentions that Jade is pretty sure she won't stop there.
What Ericwinter said.

And I DEFINITELY want to get a share of that. Our father quite literally CAN'T deny we deserve it.
Somewhere, far far away, your father raised a questioning eyebrow.

@BirdBodhisattva what would be needed to reach lvl 0 and lvl 1 edge? number of books and of what level? Is each book capable of removing only a -1, or can the edge 3 book bring us all the way to lvl 0 or 1?
Bird previously stated that the -2 bonusis applied after everything else. So to get the cult Edge 1, we would need to reach level 3 by normal accounting.
What PrimalShadow said.

That said, acquiring enough Library levels to reach level 2 will land your cult on level 0. So you will "have" Edge cultists, but they won't really be able to do much.

about Plan Cooling Down plus family and rituals, if Jade is doing the ritual on her own, wouldn't she use her own SH score? that means she has to pass a DC 60 with no bonuses, right?
Correct. Bar her cadre and innate magic, she has no other bonuses.

Other possible places Velvet could know of... I suppose she might use it on historical and/or legendary ruins, possibly to learn WHERE they are starting from the name. Or we could use an action to look for interesting legends in books, and then decide on the most interesting ancient lost artifacts the books talk about.
I'll just mention this.

Many turns ago, when you did a book search but didn't have the bits to buy them, you actually found a book that would reveal three Expedition sites. It was a high roll and a good book.

Just reminding you all of this obscure piece of information.

..you know, from the sacrifice bonuses, we gather that a pony life isn't really worth that much.

+ 10 to both rolls is more or less equivalent to +20 on a single one (with the +20 being actually slightly better as one DC is usually much higher than the other), and the price of a lvl 2 artifact is 100 bits.

So, for a ritual sacrifice, a pony is worth about the same as a lvl 2 artifact, which is 100 bits.

That's.. a bit sad.
Correct.

Eh~... sort of. Functionally, yeah, we don't get much bonus out of it right now, but in reality the problem is more that we can't use it's full worth, rather than it not actually being worth much. Remember that it gives +10 to every Lore. That's including the ones we're not invoking, and comes out to +90 total. Which is quite a lot. The only problem is that +70 of that goes to waste.
Also correct.

And again, the Master explicitly said that going higher in the Mansus will reveal a circle to "summon minions to aid your cult", so that's no secret. Anyone who knows a bit about summoning from the game also knows how many Lores that involves.

And on a completely unrelated note, today I have learned that tomorrow will be one of those incommunicable work days. Votes will be closed on wednesday as soon as I return home.

presumably Rarity, with her good diplo and GRAIL, might also get a discount. :V

Somewhere, far far away, your father raised a questioning eyebrow.
oh, He can. He'd be wrong in doing it, but then again it's not the first thing he'd be wrong at.

Then again, if he doesn't share the bounty, he's disincentivizing us from searching for other good investments. He is, I think, pragmatic enough to consider a few more bits our way a low enough cost.

As you said, we usually move around thousands of bits. Even a doubling of our income would be pretty much nothing to him.

I'll just mention this.

Many turns ago, when you did a book search but didn't have the bits to buy them, you actually found a book that would reveal three Expedition sites. It was a high roll and a good book.

ok, now I have to look for it...

-A treatise on the relationship of Equestria and its neighboring lands – SECRET HISTORIES Level 3, costs 30 bits

-A dramatic reading of an ancient war – SECRET HISTORIES Level 2, costs 15 bits

-A historical atlas of Ponyville and its surrounding lands – Reveals TWO places for expeditions, costs 15 bits

It's the roll that had us find Twilight's library.

On that note, shouldn't we get a book search bonus in ponyville or something, due to Twilight? or maybe.. yeah, we could add a write-in to book search in ponyville, and have our servants search with Twilight's help!

Or we could ask Twilight directly, really. We know the titles of the books, shouldn't they still be in her library? or, if by mechanics, we are not allowed to do that, we can still ask her for books about a specific thing, and she should reasonably grant a pretty good bonus to the search, and maybe an higher chance of getting a specific kind of book.

We are good friends with a LIBRARIAN, damn it! do we even need to mention that yes, we want her help for Ponyville book search?

We can even pay the usual 15 to 30 extra bits that are usually used to boost some social actions (like we did when we bought a dress from Rarity basically. In this case it can be considered either a tip to Twilight, or a donation to the library I suppose.)

I'll be honest here - I'm not sold on spending our Bits on an Artifact right now. I'd like to have money saved1 for opportunities as they come up, and also... well, I'd kind of prefer to work towards a level 4 artifact.

It should be noted here that finding a level 4 artifact probably isn't that hard. An unnatural crit should do it, but with Attention of the Laws we have +30 to searches on top of our 14 learning; we get such a crit something like 44% of the time.

And a level 4 artifact is meaningfully better than a level 3 one. For one, if it is Heart/Edge/Forge/Grail, it is worth two scraps instead of one. For another, it grants an extra +10 to rituals of that subject, and it is kinda hard to get that boost any other way. And of course we can expect the base effect itself to be more potent as well.

~~~
1Remember, a level 3 artifact cost 200 bits (and a level 2 costs 100). And we are going to have 342-60=282 bits after our latest purchase; combined with Turn 10's book purchases, this would entirely wipe out our reserves. If the opportunity for a big spending event comes up (e.g. what happened with us regarding the Rarity investment), we won't have the money to act.
that's true, and I said as much before. But I think you're underestimating the ease with which we can find a lvl 4 artifact.
To put it simply, I don't think we'll find one with normal searches, unless and only MAYBE if we do it in person, and with SH doubled bonus and/or influences. And then we'd likely have to pay a lot for it.
On the other hand, the whole point of buying the SH 3 artifact is that we can then use Jade's actions to use the ritual to find the actual lvl 4 artifacts instead (or expedition sites, which come with either artifacts of books usually)
even if we find a book with mentions of expedition sites, the ritual can be used to check them for dangers, so that we don't go for the too dangerous ones, and know how much help we need with them.
by the way, going to bed, but I'm probably going to add a write-in to the book search adding how we ask Twilight for help in finding right/interesting books tomorrow. That's something that I think should be done with all plans, really.
It's actually funny how we didn't consider asking our LIBRARIAN friend to help us find BOOKS.
First, my math is literally what we end up doing with a personal action and SH doubled. I agree that that is a good assumption for something like this; otherwise getting above 100 is pretty tricky.
I suppose it is possible that I'm underestimating the DC for finding a lvl4 artifact, and that it would take a higher roll to get there. I'm kinda doubtful, though; if a 66 was enough to get us a level 3 artifact, it is hard to believe that a 100 wouldn't manage to get us a level 4.
We quite literally don't know, like we don't know if we'd find lv4 books with 100+ in book Search. It's certainly possible, I won't deny that. Maybe even probable.
Or maybe we get a discount, or a 2x1. Who knows.
Shame that we don't get to use our location bonuses like we can for the books.
Right now all we know for certain is that
1) we can likely find lv4 things on expeditions and with ritual
2) We can buy up to lvl 3 specific artifacts at a higher than normal cost.
3) the only time >lv3 artifacts were mentioned in story, it was a possible reward from Celestia (a lvl 5, to be precise)
[X] Plan Cooling Down plus family and rituals V2
I don't really find this kind of plan-vote very engaging in quests, too much work to consider all the options properly. But I don't see anything wrong with it, and it's winning, so I guess I'll vote just to participate?
ok, there's still some time, but right now the v2 plan is winning.
After the last few talks about it, I'm mostly convinced that if we really want to buy artifacts, it would be better to search a specific one for optimal action use (basically what I changed in my SH artifact edition plan), even if it's likely to cost more. Usually artifacts stay on sale if we can't afford them, so we don't even need to buy it immediately!
If we don't want to buy artifacts because we're not willing to spend the bits, wouldn't it be better to use Rarity's action on something else? Introducing us to Applejack, Gossip about the Filthy Rich's problems with his wife, making merchant contacts...?
Because I honestly think that Rarity, without any SH bonus, is more likely than not to find a artifact BELOW lvl 3, and lvl 4 (edited in) is probably very unlikely, as in 90+ at least required on the roll.
Other than that, as we're searching for books in Ponyville, I'm going to add a write-in about asking Twilight for help in finding books, in particular books about Heart or interesting Expedition sites (I trust Velvet to word it properly).
IF WE BUY THE SH ARTIFACT LIKE IN MY PLAN, WE CAN THEN USE THE RITUAL NEXT TURN TO "INVESTIGATE" AN EXPEDITION SITE (or if we don't find mention of one, lvl 4+ artifacts), AND THEN GO ON AN EXPEDITION THE TURN AFTER THAT IF WE SUCCEED).
sorry for double post, but I also wanted to mention something else:
Even if we find a lvl 4 artifacts with a crit or something.. we're likely not going to be able to afford it.
Right now we know that normal prices for artifacts are
lvl 2: 100 bits
lvl 3: 200 bits.
and for books it's
lvl 1: 7 bits
lvl 2: 15 bits
lvl 3: 30 bits.
extrapolating, then, lvl 4 artifacts would likely be 400 bits, unless a crit resulted in a discount or something like that. We don't have them right now, and even if we get them that's a MASSIVE investment. and if the lvl 4 artifact is for a lore we don't care that much in?
I'd rather get a certain SH 3 artifact instead, and then we use THAT to have Jade scry for lvl 4+ artifacts. Still expensive, but long term it's probably better. We might have a turn of two in which we'll need to save money, but that's acceptable.
By the way, as a reminder, the scrying ritual is 35 bits per attempt. An expedition requires a cost per day per pony (presumably no less than 5 bits per pony per day, possibly more, and likely no lenght below 5 days, if we consider our first expedition as a minimum difficulty example).
So, we can expect to pay AT LEAST 25 bits per pony on an expedition, and we'll want AT LEAST 2 ponies, simply because we have only two health points and can't afford the risk of going alone.
...so, in conclusion, an expedition would be AT LEAST 50 bits. More if we bring more than one more pony. Our current choices are mostly Velvet, Rarity, Jade and maybe Twilight, at least if we don't want to involve the cult.
Technically, if we get enough good expedition sites, we might send multiple expeditions, possibly some with the cult involved and some as private ones. That might be even easier if we got a few followers though.
Why especially Heart? We're almost to Level Three in that already—or at least have methods available for getting there—shouldn't we focus on Forge? Or are you already preparing to try and reach Level Four quickly after we get All-Three? Which admittedly might be useful, but still.
Because I honestly think that Rarity, without any SH bonus, is more likely than not to find a artifact BELOW lvl 3, and lvl is probably very unlikely, as in 90+ at least required on the roll.
Turn one, we sent our servants artifact hunting and they found our trusty rug on a roll of 66 after bonuses. At the time we had SH0, not that it matters much given that our servants don't use our lore bonuses.
The idea is that, if we find at least 2 lvl 3 2 Heart books, we can save the Heart 3 book for 3 to 4. Also we need AT LEAST one other Heart 2 book to level up anyway, unless we want to use an action on a lesson (which I'd rather avoid).
...admittedly I might change the priority to sites>heart>edge instead...
as you said, our SH score doesn't matter on Rarity's search. but, even if we, say, can find a lvl 3 artifact on a 60+... then what?
What if we get an artifact for a lore we don't want? do we buy it anyway? the chance of a lvl 4 artifact is low/unknown, so I'm mostly ignoring it, and if we want a specific lore more than another, I'd rather pay the premium and get to choose instead of possibly wasting a research action.
As I said, I want SH specifically because it makes Jade capable of performing the scrying ritual by herself, without using our actions. We're basically improving her value as a confidant, giving her a +30 to the SH DC 60 for the ritual to actually succeed (+ her cadre, + her magic), probably giving her something like a >90% chance of the ritual succeeding.
What would you hope to find with Rarity, exactly?
If it's a lvl 4 artifact, it's a gamble with bad odds. if it's a lvl 3 artifact or less, you might as well ask for it directly, no matter what lore it is, unless you're literally fine with any one lore. and in any case the odds of finding a lvl3 artifact are probably 50/50 at best, and possibly a bit worse.
[X] Plan Cooling Down plus family and rituals, SH artifact edition
Recent arguments convinced me that this is a better option, and besides my plan wasn't going to win anyway.
I added the underlined part in my plan, in case you didn't notice it.
-[] Shopping
--[] Books
---[] In Ponyville. (servant action)
----[] ask Twilight for help in finding good books. That's her job after all, isn't it? (preference: Heart lvl2+, expedition sites, Edge lvl2+, in THAT order, if it matters). If it improves the action offer a tip/donation to the library to improve the results.
In short, the idea is to take advantage of our GOOD FRIEND who WE'RE TEACHING ABOUT THE OCCULT and IS A LIBRARIAN to... well, FIND BETTER/MORE BOOKS
what a shocking idea, right?
but seriously, I'm a bit embarassed It took me 2 days to think of it :V
