XCOM: The Long War [We're back in action]

If the mooks are going to be getting names, the I put mine forward. If by some miracle I earn a nickname, I would like it to be Killet Queen, also.

On another note, Long War? Are you mad?

We have helmet cameras? I thought the budget ate those?
Bradford donates the entirety of his... already small salary to the project's cause. (Then again, the man practically lives in the base anyway after his family got abducted.)

It's enough for two helmet cams per squad.
Why exactly are we doing that job instead of the girl-scouts?

Oh, right, 9 pm bedtime can interfere with the ops. Though, if we could call them for support at times...
Actually, that was the SAR team that did this. Girl scouts are just as ineffectual as our regular troops.

Why our veterans got assigned to SAR duties, I'll never know.

Okay, I need to stop. I'm getting off-topic here.

Operation Banished Knife Part 2

Your rookie Hassan Amin takes the first shot, targeting the Sectoid in the center.

He quickly steps out of cover to take the shot. Many years of experience in the military kick in and...

He lands the shot. The alien is severely wounded.

After witnessing his squad mate's success, Mordecai Rosenberg follows the example and also steps out of cover to try and land a shot on the aliens.

He targets the sectoid on the left...

Aims...

And successfully kills the Sectoid.

Hopefully this will be the first among numerous kills for XCOM.

As the alien dies, you can't help but notice that the alien's strange plasma weapon explodes along with it.

When I first tried XCOM EW, my rookie missed a Sectoid point blank despite having the flanking bonus. :jackiechan:

He died the next turn....

Operation Banished Knife Part 3

The aliens seem to have snapped out of whatever trance they were in.

Their first action is to use the esoteric psychic powers you've heard so much about.

One of them advances and aims for squaddie taking shelter behind the gravestone on the right.

It however fails to kill her.

Just as you think that perhaps this will turn out fine, you hear someone hyperventilating over the coms.

"OH GOD SOMEONE GET ME OUT OF HERE! I DON'T WANT TO DIE! PLEASE I'M BEGGING YOU!"

Looks like she already broke. The first mission hasn't even finished and someone is already panicking. You ignore the sobbing and the pleas to start a retreat to focus on something far more important.

Reinforcements have arrived.

So I'm going to wait for you guys to give your advice on what to do next before making another update.

It appears to be a very tricky situation right there with a high chance you're going to lose some people.

Ok, get the solider left of the panicking one to chuck a grenade at the Sectoid that initiated the mind meld so it kills it and the Sectoid it's connected to.

So that leaves you six other soldiers to use.

Try to move the two Rookies in full cover next to the stairs to the right so they have a clear shot at the Sectoids attempting to flank you. If they have a low chance to hit, throw a grenade to destroy their cover so your hit chance goes up and take the shot and hope you kill it.

Now after that is done, move the Rookies in half cover to full cover and see who has the best chance to hit and who has grenades.

Toss grenades if you can at the Sectoids in full cover and fire with the rest of your soldiers and see how any you kill.

Just my take on it.

GET. INTO. FULL. COVER.

Whoever is out front needs to lock themselves down. Ive beaten Long War, its all about full cover and grenades early game.

Operation Banished Knife Part 4

After hearing the various objections from the war room about their choice of cover, all the soldiers (except for the panicked one) quickly run to the full cover provided by the wall.

Luckily, almost all of them had enough time to fire back at the enemy or reload their guns.

Rookie Stephanie Owens aims at a Sectoid standing near a statue...

fires...

and kills it in one shot.

Rookie Hugh Murphie targets the Sectoid that used its psychic powers earlier...

aims...

fires...

and kills it in one shot like Rookie Owens.

The psychic backlash unexpectedly causes the Sectoid being supported by the deceased Sectoid to die as well.

You can already see Doctor Vahlen taking notes in hopes of using it later on in her projects. Doctor Shen also seems to be rather interested. No doubt he will try to get his hands on the video later on for research purposes.

Rookie Amin reloads his gun and the aliens make their move shortly afterwards.
