Xander [Quest], Thread Three: The Way of the Raging Boar

[X] Ki sight and visual enhancement, for maximum clarity. Will use about 10% of your remaining ki, leaving you with 50% of maximum.

Although I wouldn't mind saving it for any possibly flight, if that'd work.

You know on the whole flight vs Teleport. Why not get both. Teleport for really long distances that flight can't cover.

Some people have been saying we shouldn't learn Teleportation since were on he hellmouth. I think we should just leave it first then teleport.
Agreed. Exactly how much territory does the Hellmouth influence? I'm sure there are regions outside of that where we can learn and train things to dangerous to do in Sunnydale itself.

Well, we also shouldn't learn teleportation on the Hellmouth. Since messing with space there might catapult us into another dimension.

Somewhere else is fine.

I've been saying flight is better than teleportation while within the hellmouth.
If we can learn teleportation, outside of the hellmouth, sure, let's go for it.

[X] You have enough mana to cast a divination spell that would let you study one match from a magical perspective.
- [x] Second match, another might-be-a-ninja boy versus a really cute girl.

[X] No divination spell.

I'm hesitant to use the divination spell as of yet. I'd prefer to hang on to that magic until the final match.

As for the weapon debate... if we can make them Magic Weapons, since we're using the D&D rules even a simple +1 enchantment doubles the hit points of the average sword and increases its damage resistance significantly, so we can make them out of whatever materials we need within reason. We can cast Magic Weapon to toughen up our weapons for short periods, and call on Briar to use Align Weapon to make our weapons of the opposite Alignment to the opposition, too.

Hm, yeah, I've been convinced - I was a little unsure about spending mana as well.
Let's just go with enhancing ki sight...
At least unless we find out someone can do one of the movement options we want (flight or teleportation), then we should probably look with magic.

Worth noting that the more magic we have the faster it regenerates. So the longer we leave off using a spell the better.

Hold off on the spell for the moment for reasons discussed earlier on this page.

As the first two fighters take their places, you once again channel ki to your eyes, causing the shapes and colors that fill the world to become sharper, brighter, and more distinct, even as the riotous rainbow haze of ten thousand living auras shimmers into view all around. Considering the amount of ki you have left, the amount you're likely to use monitoring these fights, and the fact that, in the worst-case scenario, Briar can top off your mystical tank one more time today, you see no reason not to use your abilities to the utmost - especially not when the prospect of learning new and/or improved techniques beckons.

In the first bout, the wooden sword wielder faces off with one of the boys whose use of the Body Flicker technique would seem to imply ninja training. Whether he's a shinobi or not, the boy in question seems to have been thinking along the same lines as Altria, for after a few early passes that amount to him ducking and weaving around his opponent's weapon - a bokuto, you think is the technical term - the ninja disappears in a blur, and reappears directly behind his target. Sword-boy must be familiar with the technique, however, for he moves into a counter almost instantly, whipping around where he stands and using the momentum to swing his blunted blade across his body with more force than normal. You fancy that you can hear the impact of hardened wood against bone as the swordsman strikes his opponent down. The other boy manages to roll with the blow and then away from his canny foe, but while the fight continues for another minute, the swordsman holds a clear advantage the entire time. After a couple more hits, it ends with the now-stiffly moving ninja conceding his loss.

Altria, you note with a sidelong glance, seems pleased with her fellow blade-wielder's demonstrated proficiency.

When the second bout begins, you can't help but notice how the entire ring rapidly fills with a pale, sparkling red aura that emanates from the girl - a remarkably cute girl, you realize, easily the prettiest you've ever... wait, no, you can't say that. Didn't you already tell Kahlua that she was the prettiest girl you'd ever seen? Yes, you did, and it's still true - so why do you want to say otherwise, when you know that it would be a lie, and moreover, one that would likely get Kahlua upset at you when (not if, but WHEN) she found out about it? Plus Cordelia would get ticked at you for saying another girl was better-looking than her... seriously, why are you even considering saying that? You spend the rest of the match staring blankly ahead, seeing nothing while your mind wrestles with its confusion and a growing ache somewhere behind your left eyeball.

"Alex?" Briar asks curiously, as the fight winds down with a win for the girl. "You alright?"

"What is that girl, Briar?" you ask, closing your eyes and reining in your ki, which has been burning away steadily for the duration of the match. "And why did looking at her aura give me a headache?"

"Huh?" The fairy looks at the ring for a long moment, and then snickers. "Oh-ho. Little Alex is having funny feelings about a girl, is he?"

You sense Cordelia's sudden attention in a way that has nothing to do with ki sense. "What was that, Briar?"

"It's nothing," you say quickly.

"Yeah, if by nothing-"

"Briar!"

"-you mean Alex getting a headache courtesy of that junior league succubus."

"Wait, she's a demon?" you burst out, eyes opening wide in surprise. "But her aura-"

"-didn't look or feel all that demonic?" Briar guesses. You nod wordlessly; okay, the pallor of it did suggest non-human heritage, but not to the extent of the girl being an actual demon. "Yeah, that's not surprising. I'll explain later," she adds, as the Announcer declares the next fight of the round, and the crowd once again begins to cheer.

After how the second match messed with your head, you're almost afraid to watch the third, but when a mind-warping rosy aura fails to manifest in your vision, you start to relax. That lasts until the older ninja-girl and her male counterpart start blitzing each other with Body Flickers, all of which seem to end with the "victim" disappearing in a flicker of his or her own - or in a couple of cases, bursts of smoke that leave behind broken tiles, ripped up from the floor and apparently exchanging positions with one ninja at the moment of impact. Seeing THAT makes you bolt upright in your seat, Briar yelping in as you nearly dislodge her from your shoulder in your shock, because it's another ninja trick that you'd swear was teleportation. The two ninja chase each other all over the ring for a solid minute of blurring, half-visible exchanges. That phase of the match ends abruptly when the girl doesn't wink out, instead accepting a hit to the shoulder in order to get a shot at the base of her opponent's throat, which leaves him wheezing for several seconds and easy prey for a hold. It almost ends the match, but the shinobi recovers and gets out of the grapple somehow, after which the fight shifts over to more conventional martial arts. The entire match remains very close, but it ultimately ends with the kunoichi getting thrown out of the ring.

"You were saying how a demon with a non-demonic aura wasn't surprising?" you ask Briar.

"I was saying that a succubus with a non-demonic aura isn't surprising," Briar corrects you. "They don't get along very well with the males of their kind, so they tend to have kids with guys from other species, and for some reason I never heard explained, when the father's human, the daughters nearly always inherit all of Mom's powers. Which among other things, include supernatural good looks, shapeshifting abilities, and the power to turn most guys into drooling idiots just by smiling at them."

You can hear the smirk in the fairy's voice.

"Naturally," she continues, "succubi who live on Earth and are aware of this little fact try to hook up with humans when they feel the old biological clock ticking. If that goes on long enough - mother to daughter to granddaughter to great-granddaughter, and so on - they eventually stop being 'demons' in the technical, extradimensional sense, and start being, um, 'naturalized supernatural resident entities,' or something like that. Plus the social influences they grow up with make them a lot less psycho-bitchy than their cousins."

The last match of the round sees the ninja-boy with the indistinct ki blasts waging a ranged battle against the young demon of interdeminate gender, who counters each attack with a sizzling orb of sorcerous fire. You don't learn much from watching the demon, whose aura is as alien and demonic as Gorn's was, if not as threatening; it registers to your senses like a greasy fire, with a faint sizzle as of frying meat. The human fighter is not that much more instructive. If his ki blasts were actually invisible, they'd be very interesting, but by this point you've realized that the reason they're so hard to see is because they don't carry a lot of energy; you can do much better with your current attacks, even if the results are blatantly obvious to anything with eyes. Ninja-boy makes one attempt to skip the clash of energy bolts and close to striking distance, but he's no sooner flickered into range and thrown a punch than he recoils with a pained cry, cradling his striking hand against his chest. There was a waver of hot air at the moment of impact that you suspect had nothing to do with the boy's own ki attack - the demon's unpleasantly fanged grin is too telling.

Despite what must have been a nasty burn to his hand, the shinobi keeps fighting. In fact, the pain seems to help him focus, for his next attack is no vague shimmer, but a fully-formed bolt of blue-white ki, which takes the demon by surprise and smacks it directly in the face. The demon doesn't appreciate this at all, and retaliates in kind, unleashing a veritable wall of flame that leaves the young ninja in a smoking heap on the tiles. There are a few minutes where it seems as if the match may end with a disqualification for excessive force, but after the first aid team declares the young ninja to be only "rare" rather than "charred," a win is awarded to the flame-wielding demon.

And that ends the third round.

How will you spend the break?

[ ] Question Briar about succubi. Is your reaction at all typical, and if so, are there ways you can prevent it from happening again in the future?
[ ] Look for Kahlua and her family. Surely Akasha could offer some advice on how to deal with boy-controlling demon-girls?
[ ] Although he didn't fight like them, there's a chance the burned ninja is related to Kasumi and Ayane. Perhaps you should look for them and inquire after the older boy's health?
- [ ] Don't mention your newly-discovered vulnerability to mystical female mind-control. It might give the ninja girls ideas.
- [ ] Take a chance and ask the ninjas for advice on not getting your brain hijacked like that.
[ ] Something else? (Write-in.)

OOC: So, that whole thing about the previous post being the last story post in the thread? Turns out that was a total lie.

I would like to point out that I called the Girl having an Aura. Not at all surprised she turned out to be a succubus. I wonder what would have happened if we tried to magically scan her.

[X] Question Briar about succubi. Is your reaction at all typical, and if so, are there ways you can prevent it from happening again in the future?

I somehow doubt mental lockup is normal. Normal response should be what Alex started with, the whole "cutest/prettiest/whatever girl ever", continuing and getting worse..

...not going to think about what is "normal" for an eight year old to react to a Succubus.

At a later age, I think knowing Cordy would be a pretty good shortcut on the "who's the prettiest" loop.

And no idea on the vote right now.

Edit: Okay, I can get behind [X]Plan YOg.

-[X] While talking, just look around to see if you can spot Kahlua and her family. Surely Akasha could offer some advice on how to deal with boy-controlling demon-girls?

Asking Briar first, and also seeing if we can spot Kahlua and Akasha (we wouldn't have to go there, but I want to know where she is, and maybe let Kahlua know that we've seen her, so she won't be too upset with us - would help with getting a moment to ask Akasha about that, if possible)

WOO! Finally read through all 3 threads up to current events. This quest is awesome, and that's from someone who's only ever seen the first season of Buffy.

Nice, glad to see someone agreeing here: I mean, personally, I'd be fine with just turning around and watch where she'd be, maybe wave or something (so she doesn't get annoyed before we get to talk to Akasha), while we have the conversation with Briar.

No. No Kahlua. I'm not sure why people are obsessed with the very dangerous vampire that irritates our good friend Cordy.

I agree we shouldn't go and talk to her - just try and look if she's there.
Especially since I want to question Briar about succubi, so we've got something early on for defense.
