Xander [Quest], Thread Fifteen: "Stranger Than You Know," 2.0

Blech, I want to apologize to everyone. Looking back, I got angry and I started an argument and messed up the thread again :(

As penance I'm going to be updating and making the OOC posts list look cleaner for the next bit, so it should be done by the end of the day.

As to Lu-sensei we shouldn't bring him up as it's clear he doesn't want to go.
If he doesn't go I'm against going as well. That said, I he was against it, and he said that he would require our parents permission first, but I don't think he outright refused to go.

Tempted to go with,

[ ] "For what it's worth mum I could probably just teleport to Japan if money is an issue, I couldn't do it before the tournament but watching some of competitors that used magic showed me how to pull it off, either way I won't be going with out your permission Mum just wanted to point out it is an option."

Might be better going with a less specific write in and just keeping the intent of the above.
*sees all the moaning about the heart container*

Fucking really? :/

It's over and done with months ago. In hindsight the standard container would almost certainly have been a better choice but I think you are vastly underestimating how useful having fire resistance and earth resistance will be in the future.

Fire is basically the most common energy attack that gets used having resistance to it will be very useful.

Am I correct in assuming that we only have earth and fire resistance due to the heart of fire and would not be able to get it with out it?

Also voting for this.

Edit: Also does acid come under the earth elemental resistance? I think in DnD acid maps to earth which makes some sense but it's kind of an odd duck compared to the other energy types in dnd.

I hope we can pass this years soon.

It's almost feel like one year in real life too.:p
It's been 17 months since Alex started year two of school.

That said I don't mind (much) if it takes another 7 months to finish the year as long as Judge manages to make it as interesting as it has been so far.

Actually fire use is pretty rare in this setting, most people just throw pure magical energy around. Also endure elements would still be better protections, than that waste of a heart container.
Endure elements gives you no protection at all from damaging elemental spells it just lets you be comfortable is very hot or cold areas.

You are thinking of 'resist energy' or maybe protection from energy

I would also disagree with your idea of pure magic/force attacks being the dominant method of energy usage. Willow ran the full gammut of fire balls and lighting use along side force magic as well but lighting and fire have definitely made fairly extensive appearances in BTVS.

Well, I don't want to play Alex' high school times in my retirement... ;)

I think this quest is interesting but I want our alex to pass this year.

Maybe this will be plot point in Alex characther and we can flshback to this longest year of our life.

Like shounen protagonist.:p

Off hand I can think of only 2 people that used fire, Dark willow, and Wesley. So its seems pretty rare. While nearly all magic users, can and do throw around force energy. Likely result of how magic works. Anyone with a source of magic, can throw it around, to throw fire around would require a specific source of magic that allows for that.
Well off the top of my head we have the sorcerer that hit us with a wave of lava as an example in quest. There are five elemental energies in dnd. Cold, Fire, Sonic, Lightning and Acid.

We have a permanent resistance to two of the five and whilst those resistances right now are pretty minimal this wont be the case for ever. Having resistances that need no maintenance is pretty useful tbh.

OOC: Heart Containers add directly to life-force when used in the normal manner, and life-force is what provides the "power" aspect of ki, so yes.
What other benefits or drawbacks are there in greater life-force?

Edit: Could create a new thread? If this continues we won't be able to properly discuss and vote, again.

[x] Let Mom get her thoughts in order.
--[x] While mentally preparing your own arguments
----[x] The kid in question is from a very powerful family, in all meanings of the term. Declining the invitation may have negative consequences on your long-term relationship, which is something to be avoided.
----[x] Your safety will be assured by the inviting family. And they are fully capable of doing so, being very powerful
----[x] You would really like to go, as meeting both the girl in question and other kids from the tournament is something you look forward to.

You guys can completely change the arguments themselves, but I think that adding the "While mentally preparing your own arguments" is worth it, as it focuses Alex on what to do while waiting.

We have confirmation that Fire is the number two most common supernatural attack vector:
Judge Mental said:
When it comes to mitigating injury, one of the most basic lessons is "don't get hit," followed by various methods of redirecting and absorbing force, so that unavoidable blows which would otherwise be highly damaging end up reduced to stings and bruises. It's hard to do that kind of thing with elemental attacks unless you pull out spells and enchanted items, both of which require investments of time, energy, and other resources that you may not have to spare. Not to mention that Fire - in all its various aspects - is one of the prevalent offensive vectors in the mystical world, second only to supernatural levels of raw physical force. It's pretty common on the mundane side of things, too, for the simple and abiding reason that Fire Kills (Almost) Everything. If it doesn't, you're just not using enough.
It is admittedly an IC narration rather then an OOC statement but it's good enough for me.

We could actually invert the comment about teleportation if we wanted. Try and make our mother feel better by letting her know that if we wanted to come back home early, we totally could, even if having to make multiple teleport hops would be a big pain. Reassure her in a way that doesn't make it seem to her like we'd have reason to want to leave in a hurry, even though that's exactly what we're trying to reassure any worries about.

We have greater teleport open to us.

It's a 7th level spell and we can cast it ritually.

We might want to open a temporary thread, because it's looking likely that this is going to get to 100 very soon.

Again though, sorry for starting another argument like that :(, especially so close to the end of thread. I apologize to everyone for bringing it up.

I'm not sure what to vote for right now. Right now she is mostly afraid I think, for good reason, and talking about the politics isn't likely to make her feel better. Talking about teleportation is risky; it may help, but it could also hurt. We have to keep in mind that Alex is eight and all the associated risks inherent that his parents are correct to be afraid of.

Here is the OOC list with a few new additions. I tried to clean it up a bit but it was a bit difficult finding good subdivisions for stuff, so I just left it as is for now.

Why don't you just put that into a googledoc?

This is a good argument.

I'm kind of confused why the dresden files can't be a thing. I mean it's possible for them to be out there. Just not on Alex's earth. After all According to Bob spiderman is real somewhere. Along with star wars. They just are stupidly far in away in the nevernever that you would die before you get there. Of course we can get around that cause our magic allows for long distance plane traveling.

I might in a bit, but Judge did say something about appropriating the OOC posts for his own use.

Can we wait till the next thread to talk about this guys?

I know I don't have any room to talk but we don't want to get maxed out so people can't vote or bring up good ideas before the end. We could still open up a temporary thread or something, but I don't know if Judge would like that at all.
