[X] Buy a ticket offworld on a dimensional ship (8000 Cordamar currency)
Taking a chance, you buy a ticket to travel on the dimensional freighter offworld.
You are still unsure how methods of travel work in this civilisation. On one hand there are fixed dimensional gates, and sufficiently capable mages can simply teleport people and goods across dimensions.
On the other hand, there are spaceships that travel between worlds and dimensions. Wouldn't the gates belay the need for all that? Hang on, would that mean your world walking ability isn't that special once you get a working device?
Perhaps there are other factors such as difference in wealth, tech levels or power consumption in play. You look at Metatron helpfully.
I am not your exposition genie Alice.
Why is it so grumpy?
Wait, is this some next level ploy to make you socially interact with more people? You are not a shut in!

[X] Buy something before you leave Cordamar
-[X] History books
-[X] Travel guides
-[X] Clothes & luggage
[X] Covert funds to TSAB credits
-[X] Three-quarters of remainder after shopping.
Regardless, you spend your remaining time in Cordamar buying various goods with your newly acquired local currency.
You enjoyably spend several hours getting a variety of comfortable clothes that won't make you stand out on various former Belkan worlds. Several sets of clothes are bought along with a suitcase for travel to keep it in.
The fashion is strange and unfamiliar but nothing too alien.

You also buy a selection of books, focusing on history and travel guides for various worlds. The paperbacks you obtain aren't too shabby for a world that has a total population barely above that of your native country.
450 Cordamar currency spent
There isn't much time to read the material before the ship arrives. Though there should be plenty during the journey itself.
You opt to convert most of your local currency into something more universally accepted in this corner of dimensional space like TSAB credits.

There is no dedicated spaceport facility in Port Recontis, just a large open field of concrete. You are told one existed but was destroyed a century ago and never rebuilt. Metatron also tells you that if the world was developed enough to be visited by better passenger ships you could have been teleported up to the ship. You assume its similar to being beamed up in Star Trek.
The dropship that comes down has large doors that quickly have futuristic pallets and containers filled with supplies and agricultural products pushed through them. You're given an uncomfortable seat next to a big box.
You get the feeling these people don't get many passengers and you strongly suspect you share the landing craft next to butchered animal carcasses.
The journey up has its bumps but is smoother than common knowledge led you to expect. You can't believe how casually you're going to space. There are no windows which does lessen the sense of wonder and the heat is causing you to sweat, but you can't shake the feeling that you are in space.
Eventually the dropship reaches the location of its mothership in high orbit. The freighter is an ungainly shape in space, it dwarfs the dropship by several orders of magnitude.
After being escorted in you are promptly dumped in a cabin and told to wait until the transit is complete.

There is several hours of free time during which you open and read through a couple of the history books.
It's good to have another point of view, just to make sure Metatron isn't feeding you a line of wild bullshit.
You skim past the wildly incredible claims in the early chapters. Mankind somehow stumbled into magic and advanced technology in prehistoric times is something you find hard to believe. It feels vaguely like the plot of that television show Stargate you guess.
Apparently a Belkan empire did exist like according to Metatron's claims. Established after the fall of the Al-Hazard civilisation a few thousand years ago and it was around for a very long time. You are unsure how long the years they are referring to are in relation to Earth years, but the range is somewhere from several hundred to a few millennia.
Another feature is that it was expansionistic, almost ludicrously so. It seemed to find any excuse to invade another dimension or world. There is a claim that the modern TSAB is much smaller than the empire at its height, being based around its core regions.
You have conflicting viewpoints from the two books in your possession. One book claims the conquests were a tragedy, a senseless loss of life in the pursuit of jingoistic goals. It bemoans the loss of culture and calls on people to move on from the dark past. The other book is different, it claims the empire brought civilisation to humans who were in many cases stuck in the stone age. Uplifted and assimilated them into Belkan society for their betterment. At times it seems almost nostalgic about the past.
That brings you to the reason why it's not around anymore. Another pastime of the empire were periodic civil wars and brushfire conflicts between constituent parts. Turns out basing power on personal strength has some flaws.
One such civil war was so disastrous it plunged the local dimensional cluster in to a new interstellar dark age. The Belkan empire collapsed a few hundred years ago and the time since then was labelled the Warring States period.
There were several different players in this period, many of whom were former constituent states in the empire. One of them is this Commonwealth that Metatron claims to originate from.
The succession wars came to an end through the sacrifice of some woman who went on to become Space Jesus. The Time-Space Administration Bureau was an organisation that was established around fifty years ago and has dominated since. You don't delve deeper into this chapter as an announcement comes through the speaker signalling the voyage is shortly about to culminate.

The freighter docks at a starbase deep in space and you soon leave with your luggage. Apparently this is a way station of some sort and from here you must choose your ultimate destination.
Metatron recommends three worlds that are promising. Dimensions that should have the advanced technology and temperament to repair the device.
Lausanne. A former Commonwealth world that was quite developed and populous. There should be friendly elements here that would be well disposed to you due to your last name and lingering sentiments toward your family. Metatron indicates that it should be able to access some secret bank accounts here. The only problem is that it is a TSAB Administered world. The political class is broadly in favour of membership and the Bureau's armed forces maintain a strong presence. Metatron says you would be wise not to act openly lest you draw attention. The price of the ticket would be 4000 credits.
Elysia. A Non-administered world that was historically fought over by the Hegemony and Commonwealth. It maintains some degree of wealth, and is the closest of the worlds. Metatron also indicates that it should be able to access a secret bank account here. While the TSAB would not be on your back, the world has had some instability in recent decades as it plays host to large scale refugee camps from the Warring Period. You are unsure what Metatron means by that. The price of the ticket would be 3000 credits.
Josamine. Officially known as Non-administered world 86, the world is situated in one of the border dimensions of the old Belkan empire. It is the poorest candidate and the furthest away. There is a decent amount of civilisation but Metatron is unsure if it would have any relevant bank branches to collect hidden funds. It has the least amount of people, such that it is not certain you would find the suitably qualified technicians you need. One advantage would be it being completely below the Bureau's notice. The price of the ticket would be 5000 credits.

There are two people in the waiting area you are currently in. This part of the space station seems practically empty but you do note that it has gravity, like the ship did.
The girl around your age, perhaps a few years older with a wacky hair dye. She seems to glance at you from time to time, making eye contact and is all smiles. It seems she wants to strike up a conversation.
The man is a decade older and isn't paying attention to either of you. He seems reading some kind of pad and periodically putting his hand in his coat pocket. Having a chat with him would be a nice snub to Miss Sunshine over there.
Or maybe you should follow his example and ignore both of them. You are not sure how solid your backstory is, though you guess you could use practise.
Do you try to make conversation with one of them?
