Wolf Spider (Worm) (Complete)

I liked this chapter for several reasons. Firstly we got a fight with the E88 rolling out in force in which Team Wolf-Spider flexed their muscles and captured three capes, iirc, and injured more. Getting the twins and Rune are a pretty big get, though the Empire is still kinda stacked with heavy hitters.

The fight also didn't have a cliffhanger anywhere in it! Having read so much fan-fiction I was honestly kinda surprised that the chapter didn't end with the 'They're here' moment. It's very nice to have something like this fight happen and be resolved in one chapter, even if the over-arching conflict is very much not resolved yet.

The character interactions were great in this chapter. I enjoyed Rachel during the conversations jumping in and trying to get through all the 'dumb talky' bits faster. Felt in line with her characterization. I didn't as much enjoy Parian. I wasn't entirely sure for her reasoning in not wanting to leave Dolltown. Maybe I overlooked something, but I just didn't grok her motivation well.

The art of Pelter's costume is a bit off to me. Her costume is very understated and I don't feel like sandals are acceptable footwear ever, especially when walking around an Endbringer-destroyed city. I also expected some kind of mask, or at least eye-makeup. Something to obscure her features. It seems a little too un-cape-like that it could be hard for the lay-person to pick her out as a cape.

Some of it is that, in the camp, she doesn't really have a secret identity? Like, and there's nothing to really protect at this point. I could imagine eye-makeup, actually, as working.

Did he? Fog was still around post-Slaughterhouse Nine and that's after Leviathan. As far as I know, we never see anything hurt Fog in his gaseous form.

I double checked the wiki, then checked the citations and all that. Wiki was wrong. Edits were made.

Fog was never a casualty in the entire fight, which honestly is pretty impressive since he joined the group fighting on the front lines alongside all the other brutes, and his powers make it difficult for people to pull him out of the way of a tidal wave, considering how in 7.10 it seems like it took some time for him to pull himself together once he is in his gaseous form. He didn't even go down when that massive tidal wave caused so much casualties, seeing how he was active and blocking Leviathan's path almost directly after. It's increasingly looking like his gaseous form lets him tank being slammed by massive amounts of water outright.

So yeah, we really haven't seen him hurt ever, only ever contained with Shatterbird's help.

Nobody tried an open flame on him either.

You know what happens when a flame encounters a fog of organic particulates?

WHOOOMPH.

Is he even organic though? Nothing seems to indicate it at all.

Because seriously, Changer/Breaker 8, and before Wildbow changed his mind about it he was a Breaker 9. As much as the fandom likes throwing 9s and 10s around, in the classification ratings 8 and 9 are well within the realms of 'let's not fuck with this dude and focus on evacuating civilians'. If he were as easy to take out as bringing a pyrokinetic or flamethrower he wouldn't be nearly as highly rated, especially when you consider the lack of options of why he was rated so high seeing how he is neither exceptionally fast nor damaging. More likely than not he is flat out invulnerable while in that form.

Plus the dude operated for months, if not years in the same city as Lung, so he'd be dead if he could have been dust exploded.

Yeah, something like football players use to keep light from reflecting into their eyes? Or she could even be wearing sunglasses to help see through glare, though that would be off brand. Maybe the need to see for her power would outweigh the aesthetic?

Doesn't need to be organic. Aluminium dust does exactly the same thing. Look up 'thermite' sometime.
Just to clarify: no, flames don't work.

Lung already tried this.
Canonically, or in this story?

Or a roman style helmet with lenses. That could work.

Also OP I looked up some pictures of peltasts and a lot of them seem to be wearing those leather sandal things which cover their entire feet, instead of the ones that the Pelter in that artwork is wearing.

Well aware, love a good magnesium explosion myself, but that still doesn't mean that Fog is flammable in his cloud form. For all we know he could be something similar to carbon dioxide in that flames within him are snuffed out, and really if he were so easily flammable he would have long since died from someone firing a gun while inside him, or hell even from a flashbang detonating within him. Flashbangs which his partner herself uses. And that is not even including the potential sparks Night would make from scratching any metal with her claw-tentacle-blade-thingies at the speed at which she moves.

Considering how much respect the PRT has for his abilities it's really more believable to say that Fog doesn't have a magical super weakness that would allow someone to cripple him instantly.

It would take a chemical tinker to take Fog down quickly, I suspect. My first choice would be tossing C-stoff into his area, and if that fails, move up to the ever-popular FOOF. Of course, in either case those sort of attacks are as likely to severely damage the attacker as the intended target, so it would be of dubious value in a normal field of battle.

Don't you mean T-Stoff since that is the oxidant? Regardless a chemical Tinker could probably figure out some bullshit that could contain the chemical within Fog's area and not have it leak out killing everything and everyone.

Grue could actually slow down Fog's advance. Too bad we have no idea what Grue's darkness is made of either.

Hmmm.... Given the described action of Fog on things his gas form contacts, I think you're right, T-Stoff would likely have a higher chance of reacting to his composition. FOOF is still likely to be the compound that has the best chance of ruining his day, but then it sort of ruins everybody's day at the same time, so it's not anything I'd want to be playing with.

To be frank, I'm not sure I'd want to take the risk of having to transport FOOF to the fight in the first place.

At two people's prompting, I have binge read this wonderful fic. Much like Go Gently, I did not know I needed this ship until I read it.

I'm also enjoying how Bitch has re-socialised Taylor, but that has had it's own impact (Taylor not smiling, instead bearing teeth, et cetera) upon Taylor.

Also Pelter is great. Great cape, great power, someone give her shot puts.

Hammer throw or discus could be pretty devastating too.

Maybe a Parian interlude? Don't know if I've actually read one of those in all my time reading Worm fanfic.

Her canon one is kind of a high bar there, and I think people don't want to reach it. (Although Dire Worm had an interesting portrayal of her? I think?)

I'm oddly more a fan of the Foil character, though that may be mostly from fanfic portrayals. But I'm still 100% in.

Oh? Just because as Foil she's changed some, or?

I legit forgot about her interlude, haven't read canon since last year. Went back and skimmed it and yeah, seems kinda hard to compete with.

I like the character change of 'Not as a partner, a lieutenant.' It's just... kinda corny and wholesome? Like a knight sworn to their lady. I also kinda dig the musketeer image of Foil.
