Wolf Spider (Worm) (Complete)

I kind of wonder if he's also a cape. Although, it would have to be a pretty subtle power for Taylor not to notice anything on him with her bugs.

Hm? What kind of powers would she even notice? Like, if he had a thinker power there's not much (him looking drunk and sleepy could be him viewing other places or getting precog visions). If he had a weak Brute power, there wouldn't be that much to notice unless her bugs were trying to bite him. Breaker powers are pretty much invisible except when active, if he was a Tinker there'd be some odd smells but given how long he works there's a lot of time to hide evidence, for him.

Heck, he could have his rat QA power and it wouldn't be immediately obvious unless Taylor was noticing all the rats in the basement or something. :p

Whoah, there was another update? Excited! Seriously, I've been kinda quiet in the forums lately but this is one of my fav fics and since you've been asking for reactions… usually I do reaction posts as a second read through, but this time it's raaaaw.

But really, back when I was friends with Emma, I would have been all over a place like this. It was a way to stretch what little money I had while being as fashionable as Emma. Now, well. Rachel was right. Clothes really mattered for their function. That meant that I could probably use some more sports bras, since I'd not wanted to spend on them for my jogging before. But with all of the hero business I was doing, all the running around and danger, well it made sense.
It's been really interesting to see Taylor starting to adopt Rachel's attitudes and outlook. I mean, in some ways it was almost more overt earlier with her having to remember to use ordinary human facial expressions, but still.

I flushed, and said, "Um, she doesn't care that much about clothes."

"Does she?" Lisa asked. "After all, all sorts of guys say they don't care about clothes, and then they do. It's sorta the way of the world."
Shouldn't that be Doesn't she??

Lisa turned, and I saw that I'd said something wrong. "Don't talk about yourself like that. Especially since you have a lot fewer reasons to be so down on yourself. Rachel probably would."

"We're friends with benefits," I pointed out. "Maybe best friends with benefits."
No one does denial like Taylor does denial.

They were very nice smiles, and maybe I was spending too much time with Rachel, but it was a little harder to just 'switch off' the social cues, at least compared to earlier.

Oh hi there self awareness, I read some many worm fics I was starting to forget what you looked like.

"We have… well, we have a mission of sorts," Lisa said. "Can you promise not to tell the Protectorate? For one, they can't do anything and we aren't that important, and for two, it'd put your girlfriend in danger."

"...Okay," I said, taking a breath, aware that she was dragging me in deeper to this, and also aware that there was nothing I could do about it.
Sweetie, you're in love with a villain. That's about as deep as it gets.

In the cart were two cases of beer. Dad had gotten both, saying, "I ran out on Friday."

Because now, where he would have drank two beers, he drank three. Or four.
Oh Danny. :(
I knew for a fact that as socially awkward as Greg was, he didn't actually think that romance worked like it did in western RPGs. Which meant he was making a joke. And that should be encouraged.
lol!
"Good," Greg said, sounding a little nervous, as if it was in doubt that I was happy. "So, uh, um. Can I meet her sometime?"
*blink* *blink*
This time I actually kept my mouth shut and thought about whether it'd be a good idea or not first, because you could make the same mistake time and again, yes, but eventually you had to learn from your mistakes or you were a fool.

"I… maybe. We'd have to find time, and I'm not sure how she'd react to that." I also didn't know how he'd react to Rachel. And what if he recognized her or looked her up a little more? I wasn't sure whether things would get out of hand.

It wasn't that I didn't trust him, but this was, honestly, something I didn't want to mess up, and I knew I'd messed up relationships before. Friendly and otherwise.
Wow, at some point this fic got me not find Greg loathsome, that may be a first.
Oh. Uh. Crud. "Taking care of the dogs is basically a full-time job when you have as many dogs as she does," I said.

"That many?" he asked, sounding almost suspicious.

"Dogs are cool."

Greg did something halfway between a giggle and a snort. "Of course you'd… sorry. Anyways, so, we should talk more about games. I never taught you that game you watched, did I. I could do that this weekend?"
I laughed :p and he's not wrong, of course she'd say that.
The Merchants were disgusting, though also smart at times. They moved their stash houses, I thought, as I went from one fast food joint to the next, dressed in baggy jeans and a crop-top shirt that made me feel as if I were on display.
She wore it! Lisa's having more of an effect than I realized!
"Yes. This is my house," Dad said. He was well on his way to a fourth beer, in what seemed to be under an hour, and I knew it wasn't a good idea at all. I had no idea what had set him off, but I'd never seen him like this. There was anger, yes, in his voice, but the exhaustion didn't fit well with it.
Geez this isn't going well…
She wrapped her strong arms around me into a hug that was almost crushing, but not quite. I breathed in, and out, and smelled soap. She must have washed just before I got here. Washed the sweat of a day off because she knew I was coming here, and however much my brain might throw up attractive images of her lifting weights or running, that didn't mean I liked sweat or anything.

I wasn't crying, not even close, but I did sort of feel in the kind of place where I could have. I hugged her back, not in the mood for anything more than that.
Aww, I love the emotional support!
"What celebrities?" Rachel asked.
Rachel is of course, far more perceptive than we usually give her credit for and that can be seen here with her changing the topic just when Taylor needs her to.
"Nothin' to talk about. Some weird homeless lady, year ago or so. Said she liked my muscles, asked if I wanted to fuck. I did," she said, as if it didn't mean anything, "and we did. Then she kept on coming around, and I think she was part of some gang or shit, but I just scared her off. Plus, there's been a few people I run across, they're straight and all. So I made sure before asking you."
There's some nicely done bad grammar here.
"Well, you know. I think I appreciate that. Or I could, right now. Better than giving up," I said.

"Course," Rachel said.

We stayed like that for a few dozen more minutes, and then pulled apart and talked about books and video games, or rather she listened to me ramble and, I assume, appreciated it at least enough to nod along.

I didn't feel great, but I did feel better.
All the feels

Wow, at some point this fic got me not find Greg loathsome, that may be a first.

It's silly, but for me it was mostly him playing a MtG analogue. Makes him a lot more relatable somehow. :p

But this seriously is a very well fleshed out Greg, while also being one who would fit his canon characterization pretty well? I could still see him being a little harsh on Greta or like, being oblivious about Skitter stuff, it's just that with Taylor she's actually talked back to him enough that he knows her and is more comfortable with her instead of trying too hard constantly.

Don't worry, I'm sure that he'll eventually disappoint everyone. :p

Ok I'm gonna reread this as I love this story but I've got to ask.
When did Danny start disapproving of Rachel? He hasn't even met her right?
He was actually excited to meet his daughter's girlfriend and invite her to dinner, as I recall.
I mean, we are seeing Danny's life stagnate while Taylor's improves, he is tired and frustrated with work.
Why did Taylor assume he is angry with her and her relationship?

Hm? What kind of powers would she even notice? Like, if he had a thinker power there's not much (him looking drunk and sleepy could be him viewing other places or getting precog visions). If he had a weak Brute power, there wouldn't be that much to notice unless her bugs were trying to bite him. Heck, he could have his rat QA power and it wouldn't be immediately obvious unless Taylor was noticing all the rats in the basement or something. :p
Remember, Taylor has been specializing in tracking down gang members and supervillains when they're out of costume. It would be a real stretch for her to miss one in her own home.

As per 3.1, Taylor has been training herself to spot contraband, so anything brought home from a cape life, she'd notice. Guns, drugs, cash, probably even just the smell of drugs. She'd notice a costume, definitely. And if he's working with other capes, she'd notice things like odd-hours excursions or weird phone calls. That goes double since Taylor herself is keeping odd hours too – if she gets home at 3AM and Danny isn't there, that's a big tipoff.

Plus, lots of powers have big tells when you're in such close contact. Rats tend to have fleas and other insect parasites, so Taylor should immediately notice odd rat behavior, especially if they come into the house. The same goes, to a lesser extent, for any other minion-master type power; her bugs can clue her in easily when his minions don't think they're being watched. Any power he'd be tempted to use when alone, Taylor will spot him using when he thinks he's alone. The only new Tinker in town has been that Merchants Tinker, who Taylor has been specifically tracking; no chance she'd miss the smells there. And hiding evidence wouldn't help – he'd smell unusually clean, which is also out of character.

And, in behavioral tells, Danny certainly isn't acting like a working-class man who's just come into a whole lot of money. Supervillain and Protectorate hero both seem extremely unlikely.

I feel like it would be stretching things pretty badly for Danny to be a currently-active cape without Taylor noticing. He may, of course, be a new trigger, still preparing to go out for the first time. :)

It's been really interesting to see Taylor starting to adopt Rachel's attitudes and outlook. I mean, in some ways it was almost more overt earlier with her having to remember to use ordinary human facial expressions, but still.
I'm still waiting on her to adopt Rachel's attitude toward her own powers. Lair covered in spiderweb and bees plz? :D

Sweetie, you're in love with a villain. That's about as deep as it gets.
I disagree here. I think most capes keep love and business separate.

She wore it! Lisa's having more of an effect than I realized!
It might also be that she's considering how few fucks Rachel would give...

Yeah, I like this Greg too, and I'm normally no fan. Well done! :D

What about dog races? I'm legit curious.

If BB had a greyhound track it would have shut down about three days after Bitch showed up. That shit be inhumane as hell. She'd legit beat the motherfuckers with other motherfuckers.

Great chapter, I really want to see Greg, Danny, Taylor, and Rach having the awkward dinner from hell now.

That is to say, if I released 2888.1, then I should be done with 2889.1, or whatnot. And then move onto doing 2889.2 before next Monday.
I know it's just an example, but given your average in this fic of 28.8k words per arc, if you've written ~83,078,133 words (or 141.5x the length of War and Peace) you can probably take a break. :p

Yeah, I have to agree. In canon, Taylor ran away from home, and then Leviathan happened, and he didn't react anything like this – as a matter of fact, Taylor wound up running into him on a job site, working. Here? It almost seems like he didn't go to work at all. Danny really ought to be better off, and yet... :(

I kind of wonder if he's also a cape. Although, it would have to be a pretty subtle power for Taylor not to notice anything on him with her bugs.

The slightly awkward part for me in figuring out what could be causing this is there's enough subtle difference from canon (see stuff like Taylor being into games and having a legit friendship with Greg) that I'm a bit hesitant in guessing what particularly is up with Danny. Hoping he's not a cape though, both because I'm not sure how well that would work and because frankly, that would be an amazing amount of drama for such a weirdly fluffy fic for me. :)

Lisa seems like she's trying to stab Taylor in the back here. Shortsighted, since the PRT is trying to do the same; whoever pulls off the backstab first loses as Arachne joins the other guys.
It's like there's some kind of competition to see who can alienate Taylor the most! The supervillains, the heroes, her dad... there might actually be some truth to him being a Cape after all. :p

EDIT: Missed a page of posts before replying, this fic does indeed have best Greg. This is not a high bar. :p

To be fair, it's not a bad idea? Lisa's.

It's sorta part of a narrative, kinda? On its own it doesn't matter, but combine it with clothing and habits and looks and everything else for a moment.

Taylor: *getting into a fulfilling relationship and self-actualizing more than she has in months or years*

Emma: "lol u smell like a dog u stupid poor person"

Man, bullies suck.

Though I don't remember her noting him being enthusiastic. Dad was skeptical and low-key.

And yeah, that's the gist of the criticism.

Actually, let me correct you.

I've wanted a Merchants!Taylor Yuri fic for ages! :V

Okay but what Taylor ends up in a relationship with Squealer... and Squealer doesn't turn out to be a hopeless damsel under Skidmark's abusive thumb?

Drugs are the third member of the poly triad, Taylor/Squealer/Drugs OT3. There is nothing wrong with this idea whatsoever! :p

Also, is anyone who reads this an artist/knows an artist? I was just thinking that when it gets revealed, some sort of Arachne-Bitch pic would be good. Of Arachne's costume, and of Bitch's new costume to come.

I don't know anything about dog racing, how is it inhumane?
