Whitewashed (Experimental Quest)

Yes, trust. First you'll start doing one thing we advise, then another, then some emotional support. Soon you'll start to like us. Then, right at the critical moment you'll be given a piece of advice that you follow and his trap springs and we all laugh at you for trusting us.

Paranoia is good...but in healthy doses. You were the one who called us. It's true that some of us aren't quite... as...hope inducing as I'd like, but... we are here for you.

Should my trap spring, its jaws will close on this "lord" who dares still call himself a demon after betraying our every ideal.

I bear you no ill will.

Yes. In a room where all her other magic doesn't work right and seems hell bent on keeping her in the room and destroying her hope. But this spell is surely the exception, right?

It's true that some of us aren't quite... as...hope inducing as I'd like, but... we are here for you.

Sure. We're here. Maybe we're only here because HE allows it. Maybe he wants to raise your hopes only to dash them.

Even the possibility of your hopes being dashed is better than despair.
I have been there, and it ain't pretty.

Have you ever heard of mothers that can lift cars, to save their children? Desperation and adrenaline can do amazing things - and more to the point, she can do amazing things - after all, what is magic if not amazing? If you put all of your power into something, and fight and struggle with all your might...sometimes you can do it.

And perhaps that's true. But even so... you can't give up hope. Hope is what keeps us going, and hope is what makes the worst of circumstances bearable. And it's through that hope, that one can find the strength to surpass their limitations and overcome whatever challenges they face. Even if hope is false, if it makes the darkest of times brighter, it's still worth having. And hey, who knows? Sometimes, hope is rewarded. Sometimes dreams do come true.
So, uh, can you hear this?

Evil wins sometimes, you know. It's already beaten her so far, apparently killed everyone she loves. You think he didn't have greater magics? Better magics?

And sometimes your hopes are dashed so thoroughly that you fall into even deeper despair. Despair from which you can never rise again. Don't bother with hope, girl. Hope is worthless here.

Do you want to avenge your friends? Do you want to destroy your enemy? Then abandon hope. Abandon everything but your seething rage, your HATE. I know you feel it. Condense it into a ball and lock it away deep inside yourself and make yourself cold inside. No hope, no despair. Just cold calculation. Do you think HE bothered with hope? No, but I bet he was cold. I bet he was calculating. If you want to beat him, you'll need to become more like him, as much as you might detest it.

Think about it, girl. How often did you hold onto hope and friendship, only for him to rely on your feelings to have you and your friends make decisions that would have you fall into his traps. How many of your precious people fought with strong emotions, only to fall when they could have stood. There is no room for that anymore, girl. That time has passed. You have only yourself. Don't think of us as friends, no matter how much you might want to. We're tools, at best, enemies at worst. If you ever want to feel hope and friendship again, you have to destroy him first. Do whatever it takes.

Great progress guys, if your goal is to try to drive her utterly mad than you're doing a phenomenal job.

This is not a good thing.

I told her not to listen, but she didn't not listen enough. She's still listening. Fine, if she wants to go mad, then she can go mad. What does that matter, if she makes HIM dead? What is a little madness, if her friends can rest knowing their foe has gotten the justice he so richly deserves? Us being here is clearly HIS fault to, so let's help her make him dead, shall we?

Oh, and the pizzas are here.

And sometimes dreams do not come true, and that is often even better. Sometimes the dreams born of imagination and fear, the torturous bugbears that plague us, never come to pass.

Evil wins sometimes, you know. It's already beaten her so far, apparently killed everyone she loves. You think he didn't have greater magics? Better magics?

See this is the sort of shit I was talking about when I said "whispers of madness".
Your enemy is overwhelmingly powerful, not because "hate makes you stronger", and he is a hateful wretch, but because he was handed out a fair-sized chunk of divine power at the making of all things, back when he bore a different face.
Attempting to emulate his character will not give you that power.

You're utterly insane. This is a place where we type things in and the girl hears us. You're not "Trapped" here, you're just trying to make her feel guilty on purpose so that she kills herself and "Sets You Free" so that you can laugh at us all failing to help her in her time of need.

Evil wins sometimes, you know. It's already beaten her so far, apparently killed everyone she loves. You think he didn't have greater magics? Better magics?
And that's exactly why she can't give up. It's always darkest before the dawn. So he's won before? So what? Are you going to let that happen to thousands of others? She can train. She can find a weakness, or find allies. It's never hopeless.

And sometimes your hopes are dashed so thoroughly that you fall into even deeper despair. Despair from which you can never rise again. Don't bother with hope, girl. Hope is worthless here.
And yet, when you hit rock bottom, there's no where to go but up.

No. There's always a better way. Becoming like him isn't the answer - after all, he's probably better at it then you. You can't beat a swordsmaster by fencing with him; you beat him by shooting him, or trapping him, or poisoning him. You disarm him, and make it so that he fights in a field where he hasn't the experience to properly adjust. Being cold and calculating... that's a path to ruin. If you go down that route, then even if you succeed... you'll still have lost. I mean heck, I bet he didn't get power just from being an asshole.

And yet... if you become truly ruthless, then would he not be able to manipulate that as well? If you "do whatever it takes" to defeat him... then, well, you'll have already have lost.

Oh, and the pizzas are here.
Whispers of madness aside, killing her tormentor does sound like the only way out. but do not give into hate and embrace the creeping ice in your heart.

Become enraged, and draw strength from the fire of anger!
The world is not as it should be! You have been hurt unjustly, as have the thousands slain by your enemy.

This cannot be accepted.
This must not be accepted.
You must fight!

And yeah, from my end of things, I'm sitting in a chair doing the equivalent of writing and sending (hopefully) encouraging letters to you while arguing with the one guy who seems to think that he's been physically trapped in the orb that you yourself made. You know what your orb does. Did you design to enslave people...? Or did you design it for the sake of communication, and reaching out?

but because he was handed out a fair-sized chunk of divine power at the making of all things, back when he bore a different face.

And how the hell do you know his power is divine in nature, or that he had a different face? She hasn't told us that. Know something the rest of us don't? Are you his agent? Or are you just making things up because you enjoy deceiving people?

Liar. I don't want her to kill herself - I advised against that, if you wish to look back at the record. What I want her to kill the person who trapped us here, and she wants to kill him too.

Besides, you're crazy too. All of us are.

And that's exactly why she can't give up. It's always darkest before the dawn. So he's won before? So what? Are you going to let that happen to thousands of others? She can train. She can find a weakness, or find allies. It's never hopeless.

I didn't say she should give up. Just that hope is foolish. Cold calculation will be more likely to bring victory than hot blooded nonsense.

And yet, when you hit rock bottom, there's no where to go but up.

Fool. You think she's at the bottom? Far from it. The abyss goes far deeper, but to plunge further she needs more weight that can be used to pull her down.

You can beat a swordsmaster by becoming a better swordsman than him. I don't claim it'll be easy, but he's clearly already beaten her prior methods quite soundly. Only a lunatic tries doing the same thing over and over again, expecting the results to differ. Try something else, girl.

You know what your orb does. Did you design to enslave people...? Or did you design it for the sake of communication, and reaching out?

We have been over this. Her magic does not work like it should here. Because of HIM. She intended her teleport spell to get her out, but it doesn't. Why should this spell work as designed just because she intends it to?

Now I'm going over to the pizza table and getting a slice. I'll be nomming for a while. Be back later.

And how the hell do you know his power is divine in nature, or that he had a different face? She hasn't told us that. Know something the rest of us don't? Are you his agent? Or are you just making things up because you enjoy deceiving people?

I can ask you the same thing. You claim that by becoming cold and ruthless that she'll be able to beat him - but if his power is so great, that won't work. Why do you want her to give in, then?

She could just as easily improve what she already knows - which would be faster, since she wouldn't need to learn the basics.

Okay, now we're getting somewhere.

He claims we're trapped in the orb. He also says he's going to go over to a table to acquire a slice of pizza, and that he'll "be back later". Quite frankly... he says we're trapped, but states that he is about to leave to go get food, as well as saying that he can and will come back...of his own free will. Seems kind of sketchy. Look right here, when he says...

which clearly contradicts he said earlier, as well as what has already been indicated about the communication networks on our world.
-claims we're trapped
-says he's going to go get food
-says he's going to come back later
That...really doesn't sound like someone who's trapped.

You don't beat a vastly more powerful opponent by being hot blooded and stupid. She isn't in an anime, so unless she's going to tell us that somehow hope fuels her magic then I don't see the point. Charging forward like a raging bull won't solve anything. She needs to fight smart, not blindly giving in to her emotions. Be cunning, be ruthless. Do whatever it takes.

And yet, it won't be a victory worth having. If you tell me that hope is foolish, then I'll tell you that you're wrong every time.

Then she won't have any victory at all. Her friends will have died for nothing, and he'll win. Even a hollow victory would be better than that, better than letting him live and do what he did to her and her friends to someone else. You know he will, if he isn't stopped.

She could just as easily improve what she already knows - which would be faster, since she wouldn't need to learn the basics.

I would presume that she and her friends where quite good at what they did, but they still lost.

We have already established The Asylum is quite large. I also can't hear her everywhere in our prison, which is why only some people can hear her, I presume. Not all seven billion of us are talking to her. Now, I'm going to bed. Good night to you, sir.

Have a nice nomming. Can I has pizza too???

Yes.

Enjou, mate, where do you think demons come from? You think the stork brings us?
On our creation, at the making of all things, we were entrusted with a crumb of divine power each, by the Big Man himself.
We all bore a different face, once, before it was stripped for us for our disobedience.
Hell, I probably saw him get it, although since "Demon Lord" could refer to anyone from the rank of throne up, I have no way of knowing which was him.

Being cunning and ruthless in no way entails embracing despair and hatred, as you seem to advocate. being cunning and vicious is a fairly obvious shortcut to total victory. Just don't sell your soul for it, nor abandon hope.

They can't read my mind. They can't!
You think I'm not real? "I'm real!" I declare. "You hear me, you talk to me! Don't dare say I'm not real!" This has been so tiring, but it's been so long since you heard anything but the sound of your own heartbeats and his voice.

They want to know my name.

My name? What is my name? I can't remember my name! I don't have a name? I don't have a name. No, surely I have a name.

"W-what is my name? Someone tell me..." I look down at myself. I look fully grown, as far as I can tell. No wrinkles on my pale white skin. So white, how long since I've been outside?

How did I get here? "I ended up here after the fight between myself...the fight between the Hero and the Demon Lord." A Hero who loses is no hero...

So now I'm here. I exist until the time that he ends me. It's inevitable. Fate.

Hope? No...I don't have hope any more. What can I hope for?

"Trapped in my own mind?" Could he have done that to me? But he came here, when it pleased him, and brought food and asked those questions...

But I never needed to sleep. I never felt hungry. That can't be normal. I-If I was in my own mind, how do I get out? Wait, trying to teleport something else? "That's brilliant!" Of course I wasn't in my own mind. I shouldn't be so ready to panic. I quickly pull the white blanket from the bed. I was never cold in here, so it really wasn't necessary. Concentrating on my magic, I forced my will into the blanket. To send it away from me, up, up as far up from me as I could conceive. I open my eyes to see that it has vanished. I can't help but dance about the room.

"My magic still works!" For the first time since I woke here, I feel something like happiness. I ignore the bickering over what voices are demons, and what voices should be trusted as I laugh. It's such a wonderful thing to laugh.

Maybe...maybe it was okay to hope for something? To escape from here, and....no, she dared not think of it.

Fighting was what had gotten everyone else killed. The Demon Lord's magic and power were just too strong.

I notice a clang from the door. He is coming. Teleporting the blanket must have set off an alarm! Another clang. I can't die yet! I can't...I need to get the blanket back, but-

Wait. The blanket's on the bed like it's always been. I'm alright. A third clang. The door's almost unlocked! "Goodbye for now!" I say as the light between my hands dims and flickers.

Darkness

"Good luck", I whisper into the dark, even knowing that she cannot hear me.
