Where the Kami Blow (L5R Minor Clan Gaijin Land Quest)

[] Kuni Fumiya
Excellent advisor for anything supernatural. Unfortunately, we already have two shugenja (incuding us!) somewhat capable of handling that. I'm unsure how big of a deal the Taint will be here such a ways from the Shadowlands, but it's covering this base at least. Warding Magic is also a major asset.

[] Asako Juzo
ALL research rolls is a particularly broad bonus, and the magical bonus is nice as well. Offset by the anti-gaijin malus, as we're literally squatting in refurbished gaijin ruins, on a gaijin continent.

[] Miya Nanako
What's the two biggest problems in a foreign land? The foreigners speak in foreign tongues, and the land is foreign. She'll go a long way to mitigate both. The pragmatic choice.
Why the hell is she doing heimin work though?

[] Suzume Masaji
Kind of niche. Matchmaking is a big courtly thing, but the other things are relatively minor. Also a mudfarmer Suzume.

[] Tsi Isao
A nice option, if we had a functioning mine and the necessary infrastructure to support making steel weaponry. Not a priority.

I'll go with
[X] Miya Nanako
for now. Though I admit the Kuni is a more exciting choice, and having backup when creatures of Jigoku start knocking would be nice.

Autumn Year 1
Crossing the threshold into the House of Sweet Mercy, you are confronted by a oddity, silence. The usual revelers are absent and the sisters themselves seem sullen and withdrawn. The tables have been cleared back to the walls save for a larger central one, around which your advisers are arrayed. Farthest from you stand Junko and Ichirou, the Lion and Crane drawn closer together through the difficulties in the walls construction over the past season. Nearby Ryuu sits, legs pulled up under himself, atop a low table sipping a thin soup. To Junko's sword hand, Doji Hiroki leans in towards them; hands gesturing grandly punctuating some joke. Nearest the door, waits your newest ally. Miya Nanako, a muscular young woman with long brown hair pulled back her waist, is leaning against the wall speaking calmly to Sakura. With her familiar long coat rumple and her hair loose and in array, Sakura is far from her normal composed self. A slight darkening under her eyes hints at a lack of sleep, but he stride is a confident as ever on her approach. "My Lord, if we are to find Kaho-chan, we need to start searching soon. I've never abandoned one of my girls before, please don't make me do it now." With that fervently whispered, Sakura slips past you to assume her place at the foot of the table.

"Well, Lord Rinkusu, not the state I expected to find the infamous lady Sakura in on my first real meeting. It's good a man of your honorable nature is willing to put up with such impetous help as us. She your spy and myself... it's complicated. After you, sir." With that Nanako gestures for you to proceed you to the table.

[] Train Ashigaru
Cost: 50 Koku + 1 Yari

With no more than a bare and ruined hut on the slopes aside it, no further sign of habitation was noted. -We need more basic infantry first. So in they go.
-A port village where our ships are beached would give us the facilities to start repairing them, and with actual docks we'd greatly improve the productivity of fishing expeditions
-We need the language, and she's more cooperative now that we've left her to stew a bit.
-Never give an order you know won't be obeyed. Get the lost girl
-Organizing the monks under one banner is necessary for productivity.
-Personal wise, settle the obligations of a liege lord and a shugenja both.

Weather: D100 X2 = 53 Heavy Rains, 36 strong Storm Off Bay

With the change of the season came a change of the weather, catching your small community off guard. The early months of autumn greeted you with heavy rains and chill fogs descending from the northern mountains the rains onset was sudden enough to catch your heimin off guard in the fields as the harvest was being brought in. Being of sound rokugani stock, the harvest continued with some loss in the early days do to the downpours. The true hammer blow descended during the final week of the harvest with an immense storm having swept in across the bay. The waters were transformed into a seething cauldron of white tops with swells washing far beyond their normal tidal marks. Winds tore trees from their beds and stripped tiles from rooftops, but your humble township stood strong. Stout Rokugani construction faced the wrath of the kami of sea and sky and stood strong.
Harvest Collected: Food Gained +60 – 1/3 (Weather Damage)= 40 Food; Wheat Seed * 8 Gained

Down at the shoreline, your small navy would have faced a far harsher fate, had it not been for yet another miracle of design and labor by the indomitable Kakita Ichirou. Calling upon the same heimin that constructed the improvements within the walls of the settlement, he has once again worked wonders. What you had anticipated as three month ordeal, Ichirou's Engineers ,as they have come to call themselves, managed in a bare 6 weeks. Whether setting pilings as whitecaps crashed, crafting quay and slips in sideways rains, or hammering scaffolds as gust bent the very trees; his Engineers never once allowed the very rage of the kami to cease their efforts. While wind whipped and thunder rolled, the piers and workshops of your new harbour grew from mere charcoal sketches to solid edifices tucked safely behind a low wall.
Harbour Has Been Constructed, Three Slips Constructed, Multiple Piers Constructed, Small Warehouse And Workshop Built. Ichirou's Engineers Formed; A Dedicated Team Of Heimin Construction Crews Who Suffer No Weather Penalties.

When you asked Nanako to decipher the speech of the barbarian woman in you care, this was not the response you expected. You found Nanako laughing alongside the young woman on the outer walls, overlooking your mud-soaked fields. The liquid burbling of her mysterious language sent a shiver up your spine, as the young blond wild woman began to sing a mournful tune.

Having noted your presence, Nanako descended to speak with you. "Rinkusu-dono, our guest has chosen to unburden her care upon myself. Apparent Hanmaru-san, gave her a bit of a shock. Apparently the Caerdywn, the gaijin to our north, practice bridal kidnapping. Until I spoke with her, she had convinced herself that Honamru had decided to lay claim to her. Saraid, our guest, has had an odd reaction to finding this untrue. I must admit her offense at not being captured as a bride compared to her embarrassment at being captured at all was amusing to say the least." With that segue, Nanako proceeded to pummel you with a barrage of odd grammatical terms and digressions about dialogues, all the while your eyes becoming more and more crossed and your headache stronger. (4d10k4= 25, bare success)

Within the walls, things fared far worse among the construction crews. By the end of the month of Bayushi or, Rooster as the heimin term it, a solid functional structure had been crafted. Well polished and spacious, it appeared to be a building to weather the ages. Then came the rains. Shortly through the month of Dog, the storms began. At their height the new court collapsed into it's own basement. After a few more attempts to repair the original design, a new solution was determined. Instead of building out of the basement, the basement has become the court. It is claustrophobic and rough, but it is warm and enclosed. With further work, perhaps it can be improved upon.
Undercity Court Constructed, Court Expansion Option Opened, Minor Penalty to Diplomacy Actions Involving Rokugani Until Improvements Are Made

Throughout the first storms, the monks spoke with honeyed words and considered arguments. As the heavier weather roared through, the monks arguments became more heated and often more physical. Ryuu ambushed you from among the crates while you had been inspecting your ship. With his right eye blackened and visible bruising visible beneath the neck of his kimono. "Ah, Kihei-chan; I do hope I find you well. When the sea meets the cliffside, it is not the shore that wins. This one is uncertain where he stands on this beach." As Ryuu then wondered off, you find yourself curious; who's blood was on his kimono.

Within the walls of your new home, you have found a calm haven against the stresses of your office. Within the center of the settlement, you have laid claim to what once may have been a nobles manor house. With a worked stone ground floor and extensive basements dedicated to storage, servants quarters, and kitchens; your personal quarters begin on the third floor. Between the working and reception spaces on the first floor and your private quarters on the third, you can find a number of well furnished guest quarters. Among your private quarters, you even have managed to set aside room for a private shrine and small research workshop. Sitting quietly in the comfort of your home, you cast your thoughts back over the weeks of meditation on the kami of this land. The kami of wind and rain allowed themselves to be calmed to an extent as you spoke of your peoples acceptance of their purpose and power. The voices of the earth spoke to you of a permanence to your peoples story in these lands. And fire spoke to you of an upwelling of heat both deep beneath your streets and a short distance beyond your walls to the southeast. The oddest moment came during the dark of the new moon, with a tap on your window. To your surprise, your gaze was met by a pair of emerald eye. Thinking back on the night, you still are uncertain why you chose to do what followed.

Your training grounds are complete, with both stretches of local hills, forest, and even below your streets being made use of. And within these fields Junko has been working further miracles. Despite being from peasant stock, these young men have taken to life as ashigaru like a ronin to sake. These men have out performed Junko's expectations by far. She has trained enough men to provide you with up to 4 companies of Experienced Spearmen. Any you chose to not call up will be available in the future, but may have lost some of their edge.

Damn, that was close. We nearly lost all the remaining ships.

Middleman got hit huh? Ow.

Uh....is this supposed to be literal? Because that sounds like there's geothermals. Which means vulcanism.

Seems to be a bit of a bandwagon. Let this be a lesson. SV never applies rational caution when it comes to mysteries or moderation. Allow me to demonstrate:

Do we really need four units of spear infantry? Spears counter cavalry, but I don't think that's going to come up a lot here? Arming two units with parangu or such instead would be a lot more versatile I think? But the boat seems to have sailed already.

EDIT: we don't even seem to have parangu in our expedition inventory. Who thought it would be a good idea to not pack machetes for the expedition?

Parangu weren't necessarily not packed, you just lost a number of supply ships enroute. That ship sadly didn't survive the roll off. And unlike other supplies that might be out in the wrecks, parangu rust.

Ach, we'll have to make do then. I'd prefer a more diverse infantry portfolio than four units with long spears but eh, consensus is made.
