What Makes A Good Man [Young Justice Quest]

Week 3.1
Basic AI DC 60: 9+30(Int/Tech)=39 (Failure-DC Lowered to 21)
Exoskeleton DC 45: 16+30(Int/Tech)=46 (Success)
Miniature Computer DC 35: 9+30(Int/Tech)=39 (Success)
Shock Gloves DC 40: 18+30(Int/Tech)=48 (Success)
Jammer DC 35: 7+30(Int/Tech)=37 (Success)

With your strings of success in the lab, you were definitely feeling confident that you were going to steamroll the rest of your projects with no trouble.

...You were kinda right.

The exoskeleton was simple since the only difference between it and the undersuit was the power output and refining the suits connection to your muscles.

With the miniature computer, the only real trouble was shrinking the hardware down so that they fit inside your smartphone. The shock gloves were a cakewalk and the jammer was finished in an afternoon. So by the time you started on the AI, you were on cloud nine.

And then you hit a wall.

Creating an AI, even one that isn't that intelligent was harder than you thought. Making it 'aware' of the environment and giving it a 'cognitive' mind was a task that required more time than you thought and it didn't help any progress you made felt insignificant.

Sighing, you decide to finish the AI another day, today was the day you're supposed to learn from Luthor's independent contractor. It was recommended that you wear clothing that would conceal you and your identity, so you ended up wearing black jeans, a black hoodie, and a black balaclava. Not exactly the most advanced outfit but it'll do.

With your shock gloves equipped, the jammer clipped to your pocket and the miniature computer in your pocket you leave the lab and leave for your mission.

Hopefully, you don't mess up.

With a grunt, you finally pull yourself up on the roof of the apartment building where you're supposed to meet the contractor. Looking around you weren't surprised that the guy was already there. And the guy was certainly intimidating, and the way he looks at you as though you were beneath him made you regret agreeing to this.

"So you're the brat that Luthor wants me to babysit for this entire mission. I'm Sportsmaster, make sure you keep up, I don't want some kid slowing me down."

Initial Impression (Sportsmaster): 15
Initial Impression (Artemis): 92

"Who?" In that moment, you knew you made a mistake. The moment the word slipped out, Sportsmaster's body language became hostile and he stared at you as though he wanted to tear your head off.

You heard a stifled laugh to your left, turning your head you saw that there was someone else on the roof. Like you, her uniform was rather simplistic. Green hoodie, jeans with a utility belt and a domino mask protecting her identity. Before you could say anything, Sportsmaster grabbed you by your neck and lifted you up so that the two of you were face to face.

"Listen here you little punk, I worked for some of the most dangerous people in the world, I won't be disrespected by some snot-nosed nobody. I don't care how much Luthor pays me, next time I'll make sure you remember who I am." With that, he drops you to the floor a walked to the other side of the roof. You rub your throat and stand up while glaring at his back.

"Are you okay?" Turning to the girl, you notice that she's smiling, apparently amused by the event. You just nod, not wanting to make another enemy. She just shakes her head and then looks you over.

"Honestly, you don't look like much newbie but I guess we'll see. I'm Artemis, what's your name?" That reminds you that you didn't think of a code name for yourself. Thinking on the spot, you quickly decide on the code name...

What's Your Code Name?
[] Write-In

Before the two of you can continue the conversation, Sportsmaster interrupts.

"The target is on the move, let's go." With that, he starts running across the roof and jumps onto another apartment roof. Artemis follows almost immediately, though she does pause to make sure that your following.

Not wanting to be left behind you follow suit, silently hoping that you don't fall to your death.

Keeping Up DC 15: 20+4(Agl/Acrobatics)=24 Success

Somehow you not only manage to not only to keep up with them, you even catch up with Artemis. You're not sure if this is due to the nanomachines, some innate talent you just discovered or just dumb luck but you're not complaining.

"So what are we suppose to be doing?" You ask Artemis, just for the sake of starting a conversation rather than really wanting to know.

"We're just following some lackey of Lexcorp and see if he's selling company secrets to competitors. You mean you didn't know what you were getting into?" She looks at you as though you're crazy and you don't know what to say to that so you just shrug.

She stifles another laugh.

"Okay, word of advice newbie, always question authority." And that's all she says, with a stone-faced expression.

"I'll keep that in mind." Before you can continue Sportsmaster stops and looks over an alleyway. In it, there's a man in a lab coat holding a briefcase, and a woman in a business suit. The two look to be talking to each and judging at how aggressive they're becoming, it's not going well.

You see several armed men coming out of hiding and judging from the way the women gestures to them, you figure that they're her insurance.

"Time to interrupt this little shindig." That's all the warning you get before Sportsmaster and Artemis jump down into the alleyway and start fighting the bodyguards. Not having a choice you join in and as soon as you land you get confronted by two of them.

Verses Two Mooks DC 20: 13+10(Shock Gloves)=23 Success

Right now, you're glad that you built your shock gloves before this mission, otherwise you would've been screwed. You didn't need a mirror to know your stance was sloppy and that your punches were easily telegraphed. The fact the punches landed at all was probably due to their arrogance or stupidity. After the first few punches, they seem to realize their mistake but it was too late. Their movements were so sluggish and slow that even someone as inexperienced as you could beat them.

After your lucky victory, you look around to see how the others did and when you saw what they did your blood went cold.

Everyone they fought against was dead, laying on the floor in a pool of their own blood. Some of them even look like the had their heads crushed. You feel bile come up your throat but you notice that the scientist was still alive and that Sportsmaster was about to stab him in the chest with a javelin.

You take a step forward to stop him but you hesitate, you remember his warning earlier and you know that if it came to a fight between the two of you, you'll lose outright. But can you really let someone be killed in front of you?

Haha that's funny. He probably wouldn't kill us, even he doesn't want to piss off Luthor, but he would totally wreck our shit and beat us to a half inch of our life.

Artie friendship = YES.

Don't do this. Having every crit lead to stat gains means we'll be super human in months. It's going to break the game even harder than min-maxing intelligence and tech.
I disagree. Its a good way to avoid a commonly hated "Grinding, The Quest". Incentivizing doing shit rather than always sitting in our lab. Especially since it only happens every 20 rolls.

Did I miss one of the people we're following finding evidence of this guy selling secrets? Luthor doesn't strike me as the type to ice an asset on mere suspicion. Sportsmasters actions don't match our mission description. He's ruthless, but usually a proffesional.

I'm thinking either he's either lossed his cool from how mad at us he is, or this is a test from Luthor to see if we can be mission focused.

Either way we should say something, and there's a decent chance Artemis will back us if we say that and don't just bleeding heart it.

I'm weirdly paranoid that this might be a test because it's something lex luthor has the mc doing.

On another note do we seriously need to have a tech based name? Even if it wouldn't give away or motif it'd be cliche.

It's just how the setting works.

Batman, Superman, Aquaman, The Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, Joker, Scarecrow, ect.

Heroes and Villains just have a name based off their power, their origin, or their theme. For us the former is the same as the latter, and we don't really have an Origin as such, so why not have it be Tech based?

Give me examples from the last 20 years that aren't legacy characters like the robins or flashes.

And you'd be fundamentally missing the point. There are already incentives to do things, namely, that we're employed by Luthor and he has expectations. Handing out stat increases like that breaks the scale. When the pov character, in any quest, becomes so powerful that only the most ridiculous of challenges can pose a threat, the quest dies. Look around the site and you'll find them.

You may be thinking, "oh come on, it's just a tiny increase, it's fiiiiiiiiiine." You are wrong. The quest is already going to rapidly escalate based on character creation choices. The QM should be doing everything in their power to try to smooth out that growth by giving us interesting social links, jobs, and side quests. Not accelerating it. Any additional free increment that feeds into the escalation is bad.

Oh, I see what you mean, I thought you just meant new people in old suits.

At this point I'm reaching so far it's a different setting, but Marvel's Freakshow is another
If a character is in someway connected to another preestablished character they're generally legacy characters. Captain marvel to carol danvers to khamila khan, Richard Ryder to Samuel Alexander, batman to his entire family. Honestly most of heroes you'd expect someone to know is either an original or someone who came into being because of an connection to them.
