I doubted most of it would be worth my time, let's see schools, universities, the vital stuff keep it, but I was pretty sure most of it was useless crap. It made sense after all, the creation mirrored its' master.

Nope. Most of those plans aren't crap. Just underfunded. Like urban renovation and road improvement.

Look, there is, in Japan, a full scale international airport that has never been used. Roads to it, almost as unused.

In Ireland, entire neiborhoods of housing that has never lived in.

Spending on infarstucture can be a incredable waste.

I think I'm supposed to know what's going on here, but since I never studied Indonesian history I'm feeling a bit at sea. Everything I know about what just happened is inferred from context in-story and a quarter of the things I've 'figured out' are probably wrong.

I walked alone in the darkness of the nerma ally ways upset that my life was being dictated to me, upset, no fucking enraged about the violation of my privacy. I punched a wall in anger and screamed to the sky.

"Hey."

Sensei sat on a cardboard box eating some noodle concoction.

"Want some?"

I continued punching the wall and I looked at him.

"You knew this would happen!"

My vision blurred.

"Not going to lie, I knew it was a possibility, I always knew it was a possibility. To be a powerful man is to be surrounded by people trying to control you. Either through flattery and other carrots or through violence and other sticks.... hm actually come to think of it that's just a part of being human in general, dealing with asshole control freaks."

"They had no right!"

"To do what?"

I leaned against the wall.

"I'm engaged to Ukyo."

He nodded.

"And you were not given a choice?"

"FUCKING NO! Why me? Why not....."

He raised an eyebrow.

"I'm sterile, I can't have children."

I blinked.

"What?"

"I can't have children."

"But you said you had a family."

"My first wife was a powerful bio-manipulator, we didn't have children in the traditional way."

"What's wrong with..."

"There's such a thing as too much power, I got greedy and I grabbed so much that I became less a human being and more of a conceptual one. I'm functionally immortal but it came at a cost, I can't have children, and believe me kid I have tried, a lot and with-"

"I get it."

He looked somewhat sad.

"Maybe that's why I like to teach so much, I can't have kids of my own so this is as close as I can get to it. So yeah, I fully agree with you what they're doing is fucked up and they had no right to do that. Question is, what are you going to do about it?"

"What can I do?"

I felt frustrated.

"Leave, it's a big world Ru, if you're that raw about this then I will pack up my shit and we will go where ever you want.... except France, seriously not France."

"But my family?"

"There is always a price Ru, anyone who tells you that you can have it all is lying. If you want freedom then you're going to have to give up things. If you want money, you're going to have to give up time. Way I see it you have two paths, well more then that but I'm generalizing."

"What are they?"

"Renegade and Paragon, The paragon path is doing what society expects from you. Theres a downside, less freedom, you have people hassling you all the time and you have to deal with a lot of bullshit, but the upside is that you will have a pretty good girl by your side. Parenthood while hard has some serious upsides and you will have financial stability. It's not a bad life if you go into it with both eyes open."

"And let people walk over me?"

"No, not that, fuck that noise, look society is a game and in every world I've been in it's always been rigged against the common man. Thing is? If you don't play people get all fucking pissy because how dare you not play the game?"

I remembered my childhood.

"So all that shit about me living my life how ever I wanted was a lie?"

He smiled.

"Nope the other side is this, as long as you're playing people will overlook it if you cheat, they will over look you if you change the rules, and thats what this is about finding out how the game is played and changing the rules. If you follow that path, make demands, make them work for it. Duty, honor and all that jazz is a two way street."

He paused.

"Good isn't dumb, and being a good person doesn't mean taking shit from lowlives and petty dictators, the other path is renegade."

"And that's?"

"You say fuck it and leave, or you go on strike. It's a legit option, I have seen entire civiliazations end when things get too oppressive and people just say fuck it. Not playing your game anymore."

I blinked.

"Wha, people just um..."

"Walking away? It happens quite a bit when cultures decide to use too much stick or don't use enough incentives, they collapse. It's going to happen to the soviets within our lifetime no matter how the war pans out. It might happen to Japan too if they keep this insane culture of overwork."

"And America?"

"If the leadership gets divorced from the public or if the petty dictators left or right take power it can collapse. Democracy is pretty good at throwing out the garbage, but if both parties get fosssilized then it's pretty damned possible. Point is you can say fuck it, it's a very valid option, and if you want to do it then I'm right behind you."

"But Suburu?"

"I will miss her, and value the time I spent with her, but I have your back."

I got up and looked at the sky.

"I'm going to need to think about this."

"Do what you have to do."

I took one of his offered noodle cups and started eating, I continued on to Ranma's place, deep in thought about the future and what it meant.

If there was anyone of value in France, they all either went to the Americas or died in WWI.
Now, no exaggerating. There were some badass French people in WW2 as well.

Not their military of course, but the civilian resistance were brave as hell.

It's just since then that the whole country went to shit.

Nice to see Hikaru is going to actually think, rather than just react.

reminds me of a side character in Wheel of time who reminisced that she had to lose her husband (arranged marriage, decades of life together) to realize she had loved him.

regarding life in France, i'm always endlessly fascinated at the public image of my country. i mean, a dimensional traveller, exposed to the squalors of entire worlds, warzones and dictatorship included, specifically refuses to travel to that little piece of Earth? Damn, i really should check outside my Windows, don't i? :p

as always, thanks for sharing your stories cherico

So, does this chapter count as confirmation that he was Fate-Zero?
Fate-Zero died after one night with Panacea and moved onto the next world. I think I remember an earlier post where this guy said he spent several years with his wife and raised children with her. Maybe this is an alternate Fate-Zero? One who, while still odd, didn't alienate most people away from him and scare them?

Ranma's place was a mess of maps, jotted down ideas and random supplies.

"This is stupid."

It was a statement of fact.

"And what is stupid?"

"It's an actual warzone Ranma, complete with guns and bullets and...."

"I know."

He seemed somber.

"We will head out during spring break, sneak in, sneak out and-"

"No."

A plan cycled through my head.

"We're going during the summer."

"Huh?"

I blinked at my idiocy and continued on.

"Everyone's going to need more training, we need to gather money, supplies, contacts. It will give us more of a window of time to get there and back if everything goes to shit."

"Ru, I-"

"Can continue to take cold showers, I'm going to go with you, but we can't do this half-cocked."

He smiled, looking touched.

"Thanks man."

I looked over the maps.

"I'm going to go home then we're going to take a long look at these plans, we're going to have to be flexible, have back-up plans, get in, get out."

I held out my hand and we shook, I then created a cloud and flew home, Ukyo was there with my mother.

"We're not holding the wedding during spring break."

"Ru?"

"I need time to think things over and Ranma has to do something during the summer, something dangerous and stupid and I can't have our relationship hanging over my head while I do it."

"I didn't realize I was a burden."

"You're not, it involves going to China."

"Isn't that a warzone?"

I nodded.

"I know, it's dangerous but he's my friend, and I can't have you being a widow at 17."

"Oh."

"I will decide on when and whether we get married once I get back from China."

"Ok, but don't take too long."

My mother got up.

"Hikaru, I-"

"No... these are the affairs of wizards mother, you might be my mother, but I will do this."

We glared at each other until she got back into her seat.

"Stay safe."

"I will try."

"No... these are the affairs of wizards mother, you might be my mother, but I will do this."
Nice, pulling out the Wizard card.

Although, I'm still a bit off about why they are going at all. Hikaru is working on curing him right? He is removing all his curses while working up to removing the girl curse. Why is this suddenly so urgent that it has to be done now that it's worth traveling and fighting through a war zone?
