Visions of Bronze, Visions of Brass: Setting and Mechanics

Wait... Are you telling me that I pay 1 point for a 2-dot effect or what?

Because in that case, I am going to enjoy myself.
1 dot.

Yes, it's confusing as hell. T.T.

A 2-dot effect is worth 4 background points. A single dot of Device, the background, gives you two background points to spend on Devices - it's the real reason it's double-cost. A single dot of Enhancement gives you two dots of Device.

So one dot of Enhancement is four points.

Oh, I finally reached Enlightenment.

I should totally go stat up your Enhancement rules as a Primer, because holy shit I've played Mage for years and what the fuck am I reading?

Trying to understand these rules may or may not lead to a Technocratic Enlightenment. :V

So the scale goes like this:

1-dot effect: 2 background points.

2-dot effect: 4 background points.

3-dot effect: 6 background points.

4-dot effect: 8 background points.

5-dot effect: 10 background points.

@NonSequtur - the intention with Principles is that you just add up the dots - you seem to have assumed that the first dot doesn't count. 1-dot's don't, it's true, but each Principle still counts for their full dot value.

Also, Love and Serve the Technocratic Union is not a free Principle, you just are allowed to take it at 5-dots when you would otherwise not be. While I haven't seen enough play to be sure, I strongly suspect that 5-dot Principles are somewhat powerful in their effect, as they make it much easier to essentially through out a willpower every round until combat ends, multiple times a chapter.

The Progenitor starting Enhancement means 1 point of permanent paradox AND a Paradox Flaw, right?

Character Sheet is Largely Complete

Name:
Lucie Axelle
Convention: Virtual Adept/Iteration X

Character Concepts: Former Reality Deviant/White Hat/Sufficiently Analyzed Magic is the Exact Same Thing as Science

History:
Not everyone gets to be slotted neatly into one mold or another, picked by the ideal master from an early age and subsequently indoctrinated into the fold with all of the information they need to fit in their pretty little mold. Lucie is one of these drifters on the waves of fate--even if using those exact words is probably a good way to get laughed at by your peers who are explicitly not supposed to use those phrases.

Probably why she's not higher ranking than she is.

She was born to a comfortable upper-middle class household, your standard Young Genius who could easily grasp high level mathematics and data processing--and was subsequently slated to be tested and recruited should she turn out to suitable. That never actually happened due to a Virtual Adept data-raid on the server that this information was spotted on--and she was picked up by those Reality Deviants first, educated in their ways and molded as yet another good hacker to Bring Down The Establishment. If they hadn't been in such a hurry, it might have even worked out, and she'd have joined their numbers once and for all!

But they pushed too hard, too fast, and exploited too many opportunities for Lucie to feel entirely comfortable with it. Oh sure, they said they were trying to bring down a corrupt system--and a quick look out the window in the World of Darkness is enough to prove that they're not wrong to lash out against it. But the means they were taking to do so? Crashing stock exchanges? Bringing down pharmaceutical companies? Even if each of these was a strike against legitimately shady interests (And she was educated enough and nosy enough to realize that this was true, and many of their targets had done terrible things), the number of innocent people who got caught in the crossfire vastly outweighed this number.

And then they finally slipped up--they got a tip that a major propaganda push was on the way, as a major hospital was recently being renovated, using some potent experimental medical technologies. They got an opening to cause the whole thing to backfire and set back progress in that field by years--and the little cabal was chomping at the bit to seize it.

Lucie had finally had enough by this point--the number of people who would suffer from this was enormous, and it was more than she was willing to stomach. She finally worked against her former master and his agents--delaying them just long enough for the Authorities to arrive.

Fortunately, whoever was in charge of that particular operation was more of the "Convert Assets" then "Salt the Earth and take no prisoners" viewpoint--and Lucie having a crisis of conscience and doing the right thing allowed for the snapping up of a cell of potent Reality Deviants. Finding out her philosophy was largely compatible with Technocracy mores as well? With a focus on the well being of society as a whole? That was something that could be salvaged, and worth the expense of time and money to try.

Today? Lucie Axelle serves as a network security advisor and datascape researcher for the Technocracy. She's never been more satisfied with her life.

Personality: Lucie has a strong sense of justice, resenting the idea that ordinary people can do nothing but serve as collateral damage in the clashes between the Mighty. She takes immense satisfaction in outwitting criminals, and holds great pride in furthering the inevitable advance of humanity. Though of shady origins, and perhaps not prone to using approved terms, her eccentricties are within tolerable parameters, and it's not like sufficiently analyzed magic isn't identical to science anyway.

Physique 2 Cognition 3 Persusasion 3
Endurance 2 Reaction 3 Poise 2
Trainings:
Magical Girl Hacker-tan 3: Lucie has an eclectic mix of foundational skills pulled in from her initial period with the Virtual Adepts, refined with the polish with her subsequent time with Iteration X. She's equally good at breaking through security as she is building it up--and when she doesn't have a solution on hand, she's also a fair hand at improvising in a pinch.

Virtual Adept Trainee 1

Iteration X Ensign 2

Princess of Adequate Bullshit 1:
Technobabble, fast talk, and more than a small amount of charisma give Lucie mythical powers at seeming like she knows exactly what she's doing and any disasters are definitely not her fault.

Security 3
Hypermath 3 (2 BP)
Martial Arts 3 (4 BP)
Hyperphysics 2 (2 BP)

Those of you looking for Enhancement expenditures may be interested to know that this write-up for prosthetics and cybernetic limbs exists and are generally canon for this quest. Naturally, replace "boosted Strength rolls" and the like with the equivalent condensed Attribute.

So one has 15 dots of principles at Willpower 5?

That seems pretty limited. 1 motivation leaves you only enough space for 2 major and 2 minor principles (and 1 dot spare).

Or, perhaps more illustratively, an average willpower 3 person will have a 4, 3 and 2 dot and can't have any more.

Mm. Point, but I've given Principles a mechanical effect in conflicts...

... Okay, you can shave the first dot from the cost, that's fine. That still kind of leaves the poor Sleeper in the cold, but at least he can have up to three close friends now. :p

If you want we could cross over backstories a bit? Because a unit like Blackwell's would have the sort to respond to Lucie's coven, and Blackwell herself does give a last chance to surrender before the murder starts.

I wouldn't do that as a base assumption. Only two people beyond the 3-4 that have 'guaranteed' slots are getting in.

I didn't say you couldn't, just that it should be a default setting. Make it a multiple choice thing if you must- one version is connected, one isn't.

Well one character or the other could still exist... they just don't end up in the same amalgam, and end up as a contact or something

The second group will be run in the same setting, ultimately - in theory they could even meet up, though that'll never happen because OOC I don't want to coordinate that many people at once.

(Saves me from having to keep them distinct. One set of major consequences and background events, I just have to keep track of where people are locally.)

Also I assume background crossover and narrative work impresses the GM. *eyebrow waggle*

@NonSequtur, a thought occurs: you may wish to spend your last Enhancement dot on nonstandard perceptions. Being able to see ana and kata of reality are not precisely normal capabilities, after all. :V

Second ones being trads or technos ?;P
And clearly the reason for not interacting is that the other Amalgan is taking our budget!
