Visions of Bronze, Visions of Brass: Setting and Mechanics

Name: Allen Armstrong
Convention: Progenitor/Void Engineer
Character Concepts: Unstuck in Space-time, Weird pre-'99 Project, Paradox Backlashes Include Turning into a Picasso Painting
History: Remember those weird things from inside the altered space associated with Jupiter? Yeah, the Progenitors decided to make a combat construct using stuff taken from them. Subject 413-VGBND - Allen - was the result. The good news: phenomenally effective at manipulating space-time. The bad news: pretty unstable, biologically speaking. Still, they think they've ironed out the kinks that lead to him breaking down last time, and he's still a combat construct, even if he's rusty after a few years of rehab. He's been assigned to this amalgam as the heavy as a sort of last stage in his rehabilitation.
Personality: As an unstable experiment, you learn how to deal with boredom. Allen is widely read and has a passion for stargazing. He has applied to transfer to the Void Engineers but their increasing militarization and repeated rejections have soured him on the current state of the convention. His loyalty to the Technocratic Union was once a matter of programming but is now a matter of long habit, even if service in Ethical Compliance and run-ins with the glass ceiling have made him less than enthusiastic about his home convention. Significant amounts of time spent in rehabilitation have made him intolerant of extended confinement or lack of activity. Nervous about blatant hypertechnology due to a bad experience with a prototype dimensional tap. He loves the open road and tends to wander. When not wandering, he keeps to himself.
Voice: Allen rarely sees much need to talk a great deal. Habitually honest. Doesn't swear or use technical language, but prone to metaphor. Can be surly.
Appearance: What, you thought I was going to put an image here? Screw that. With dark, wavy hair and skin tanned brown, Allen can, if not vanish into the crowd, not seem too out of place most anywhere in the world. Though technically of average height, his perpetual slouch makes him seem shorter, and his musculature tends to be hidden underneath baggy clothing, either combat fatigues and cloaks or civilian wear. Unlike many of the more transhumanist conventions, he's not visually stunning, and his round face lends itself better to descriptions like 'cute' than bedroom fantasies. His body language tends to be open and relaxed, if not expressive. He moves like he's in front of a mirror at all times, making tiny adjustments to posture or pace. In combat he is professional and experienced, bordering on robotic - at range. When in close quarters he moves like a dervish and strikes like a monster, and often wears some manner of excessively billowy cloak to impede others' view of his motions.

As I said, I'm completely unfamiliar with oMage, so I can't really make a character until I the synopsis is up :(

Here she is:

Name: Amelia Rosewater
Convention: Iterator/Kinda NWO
Paradigm: Expert hacker-physicist, all answers lie in data and statistics, people are numbers with enough calculation
Spheres: Entropy, Forces, Correspondence, (Against her will, Spirit)
Foci: Computers and other information technology, statistics, and of course implants and augmentations

Character Concepts: Self-conflicted Iterator, Hacker with a NWO-complex, Paradox Backlashes Include RDisms and severe headaches

History:

Amelia Rosewater is a strange woman. To most of her peers, she is the very model of a Technocratic Agent, she is curt, disciplined and polite, she is knowledgeable and a bit of a workaholic, and might have something of a love for the NWO. Amelia is thirtyone years old and has worked in the Union for quite some time, she has a bright personality and often smiles when talking to friends, but inside, Amelia is quite different.

Amelia was born to a mother working as a prostitute and a father that ran away before he even knew whether she would be a boy or girl, her mother was not able to support a child and she left Amelia at an orphanage when she was three. As she grew, she quickly learned that she was generally weaker than the other children, and that the primary way she could make things happen was by making others do things for her, thus she learned that a higher authority was good, for there was nothing to make the authority do something like a crying girl. She was Enlightened by the age of 8 when she first encountered statistics in the form of a castaway math exercise. As the concept of predicting real events through numbers was a completely new concept to the young mind of 8-year old Amelia, she quickly became obsessed with it, often calculating statistics and propabilities for completely irrelevant things, like the chance that someone would throw away an apple.

And to her great surprise and happiness it worked, her statistics were right and could really predict the future. Using this knowledge, she became the orphanage-equivalent of a fortune teller, using her nascent knowledge of hypermathematics to predict the rise and fall of things like the economy of rare bottlecaps and the chance that someone would bully someone if a certain action were to be taken.

At the age of 9, a kind man in a pretty suit came to take her away, he had slick hair, and expensive suit and an even more absurdly expensive car, but Amelia cared not for any of these things, she only cared for the fact that none of her statistics had predicted this, that her unfailing predictions had been wrong. The man's name was Jordan Atkinson, and he was a member of a certain Union, and a certain Syndicate.

Jordan taught her some rules of social interaction and then sent her off to be enrolled at Damien Academy for Exceptional Youth. At that time she had of course no idea how significant this was, but she lived on through Damien and endured the harsh regimen of schooling there, endured the pranks and bullying for not being from a background as fancy as the others, but at the same time, she found friends who found her interesting, or just people who liked her personality. It was here that she became enamoured with the New World Order due to the stories she heard about the Operatives that would go out and confront Reality Deviants, working equally well through proxies as directly to take down the enemies of the Union, now matter the challenge.

She was so sure that she'd be an Operative when she graduated, and kept holding on to that idea through all of her education, growing from a petite girl to a smug know-it-all who was easily one of the contenders for her class' "most popular girl" spot. She was one of the best when it came to statistics and hypermath, and thus when it finally came to the Future Convention Evaluation days, she was found to be most effective as an Iterator, and she was assigned for Special Iterator Classes. She was heartbroken that she couldn't be an Operative now, if she couldn't become an Operative and get her awesome JB name, how could she become as cool as those Operatives she had read and heard about?

Then she saw the Iterator curriculum and was sold. Hypermathematics, hyperphysics, computer classes and much more. She studied dilligently and worked her way through her classes with happiness, to her mind, statistics was like relaxing, and if she got to work her way through classes relaxing, she had absolutely no problems. She quickly grew in love with the advanced computer classes, though she was challenged by them, for unlike her other studies, they didn't come intuitively to her, though she was completely in love with it.

She graduated and became a Statistician of Iteration X, she got her DEI, later upgraded to an ADEI and her other augments, and was then set to work, on loan to the NWO to her great happiness.

She worked side by side with an Amalgam of Operatives, they dismantled Reality Deviant operations and worked their way through the Cabals of Traditionalists with pathetic ease, predicting every move and turn they might make through hyperpsychology and hyperstatistics. But no good thing can last forever, and most of the Amalgam was killed in combat against a Hermetic Chantry that was far better prepared than it should be. Since she worked in the background with Julia Richardson, an Ivory Tower member, the two women were left alone in the Construct to face a Hermetic on the warpath.

One person died that day, and two people lived.

Unfortunately for her, it was not the Hermetic that died, but Julia. Amelia, worked through desperate measures and used her knowledge of hyperstatistics to make an almost impossible shot, wounding the Hermetic so he had to flee.

She passed out after this, and dreamed of empty plains, a shining city and death on wings in the shape of an eagle. She dreamed of another woman's life, of calling rain with a dance, and making the gods manifest with a song. She woke, and has been cursed with a Demented Eidolon ever since.

She knows that she could reach out and listen to the eagle, but she won't let it win, she knows that for the good of the Union, she must defeat it.

Meanwhile she puts on her mask of smugness and pretends that nothing is wrong, for when she is awake she can control her thoughts, thus she binges on KeepAwake and other drugs that allow her to stay awake for the night and keep working, for sleep would mean to face the eagle once again.

Amelia often works with the New World Order, whom she has been on loan to for several extended periods of time, and thus her methods are very much like those of the Boys in Black, she keeps herself incognito, she works in far-reaching plans that destabilize her opponent so much that the killing blow can come from a source unconnected to herself, she makes sure to work through proxies and deniable assets and is very much a spitting image of an Operative of the Cloak and Dagger Convention when she is working.

But despite her similarities to the New World Order she is still an Iterator at heart, and would have absolutely no issues where the Pogrom to restart.

As long as the Dreamspeakers are hit first.
_

Personality: Amelia is a haunted woman, who pretends to be fine, she likes wearing formal clothes on all occasions, is slightly obsessed with New World Order and idealizes the idea of theunflappable Operative. Though she won't admit it, she has an unreasonable hatred for Dreamspeakers and instead rationalizes it away as just keeping tabs on a threat to the Technocracy, she was one of the Iterators in the control room with Comptroller Schiavelli on that fateful day of the Dimensional Anomaly and has acquired a minor fear of illusions and mind-trickery, though she was only there to aid more experienced Statisticians in their work, she's deeply proud of the little help she provided during the Anomaly . She is a bit of a control freak and she especially despises EDEs.

Physique: 2 Cognition: 4(Calculating) Persuasion: 2
Endurance: 2 Reaction: 1 Poise: 3

Amelia is smart and perceptive, she has been described as a genius before and she thinks with calculated precision, but she has never really been in serious combat situations before except for once where she was almost murdered in combat against a Hermetic which she very much doesn't want to repeat thank you very much. She knows how to speak up for herself, though she has no silver tongue, she always attempts to be disciplined and polite, which she tends to rather successful at. Physically she is rather average and wouldn't really be impressive on any tests.

Backgrounds: Resources 3 (From Technocracy), Enhancement 3 (From Iteration X), Genius 4, Conditioning 5, Allies 2 (Old collegue from Damien, will stat up later), Laboratory 2

Enhancements:

Universal Nanotech Interface (4pts)(Attatch to technology to reduce the difficulty of use by 1/success)
Neurochemical Clarity Implant (2pts)(Raise Cognition or by 1/success.)
Skin-Mounted Holographic Projector (4pts)(Raise the difficulty of hitting you by 1/success)
Emergency Medi-Gel Injectors (4pts)(Heal 2L or 2B per success, only works when health is brought to Mauled level of hurt.)

(All of these have been designed by taking a Rote, and doubling it's cost. Skin-Mounted Holographic Projector and Emergency Medi-Gel Injectors both cost 1 Quintessence to use.)

Enlightenment: 3

Willpower: 7

Spheres: Entropy 3 (Unique Focus, her ADEI is specially designed to work better with statistics), Data 2 (Computers), Time 2 (Constructing theoretical models)

Trainings: Accurate Statistician 3, Reality Deviant Researcher 1, Unfailing politeness 2, Computer scientist 1

She's trained as an expert Statistician, and if one were to look at her records, very few errors in her predictions would be found, due to her Demented Eidolon she has acquired quite a lot of knowledge of Reality Deviants and their methods, she likes to stay polite and disciplined in order ot much better convince people, and finally she very much likes to remind her fellow Enlightened that the Virtual Adepts are not the only hackers around.

And the Adepts don't have access to the resources of the Union.

Talents: Hyperphysics 1, Hypermathematics 2, Working through proxies 3, Desperate measures... 2

Amelia knows hyperphysics and hypermathematics like the back of her hand, she is an expert at working though proxies, and she is at her prime in desperate situations.

Principles:

Completely restructured and overhauled... (The Bio is actually about 80% less autobiographical than it looks : P) Change some stuff up here and there.

Name: Jennifer Blackwell
Convention: ~NWO~
Paradigm: Jennifer Believes in Human potential. Not in magic and will working but the fruits of dedication and cleverness. She believes in pushing the body to it's limits through discipline and the fruits of the human mind: technological augmentation. She believes that the mind can acomplish great things when harnessed correctly, especially in the social sphere; the right nudge here, the right words in the right ears at the right times. In studying a problem, all the parts of it and how they interact and form patterns, until the right solution is found.
Foci: Intense NWO Operative training, Technocratic Nanotech biological augmentations, and Enlightened technology (Such as her Smartphone)

Permanent Paradox: +
Paradox Flaws: Must regularly take Hormones and other biological supplements

Character Concepts: Fanatically Loyal Technocrat that believes in the Technocratic ideals of progress, and has a nearly pathological hatred of the reactionary Traditions that seek to drag humanity kicking and screaming back into the abyss of History.

BIOGRAPHICAL FILE: "Jennifer Blackwell" UID BS523318
With notations from Dr. Julian Butler, NWO Psychiatrist

08/08/88: Jennifer Thompson, then known as "Carter Thompson" born in Kitimat BC, Canada to Christopher Gerrin and Caitlyn Thompson.

04/09/93 - 09/06/06: "Carter Thompson" attends School at Nechako Elementary and High School at Mount Elizabeth Secondary.

[Her marks from this time are nothing special, though medical records indicate that she received treatment for Depression and Anxiety. She also spent several years as a middling ability swimmer in the local amateur club, winning a few medals here and there. Aside from some flirtation with the local gifted programs there is nothing to indicate Enlightenment potential during these years]

03/09/06: "Carter Thompson" attends Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Enrolling in several political science and anthropology courses. She achieves good marks but nothing of note. During the same month she is also hired as a part time lifeguard.

[Again nothing to indicate Enlightened potential. It is interesting to note that our Sympathizers and Ivory Tower personnel in the University completely missed her as a potential Union candidate]

09/03/08: "Carter Thompson" comes out as transgender and identifies as female, choosing the name Jennifer Thompson. She recieves little recognition from her family, and is silently ostracized from her existing social circles, and encounters mild discrimination at her employment.

20/05/08: Jennifer Thompson Enlightens during a period of intense stress, related to Examinations, and the pre-exsisting stress of her life. She disappears from the SFU campus overnight.

[Jennifer claims that she has no memory of the following week until shortly before she contacts Dr. Zheng. We attempted to reconstruct the period during Processing, but the memories are fragmented. Comparison with Watcher data indicates that was tracking several Traditions and Union operatives via untrained Hyperpsych techniques.]

27/05/08: Jennifer Thompson slips her Traditions watchers and contacts Doctor Stephan Zheng, a Progenitor Extraordinary Citizen assigned to Vancouver General Hospital, requesting to talk with someone "In authority with the Technocratic Union".

28/05/08: Jennifer Thompson is Interrogated by Black Suit Jordan Blade. She claims to have been in contact with a cell of Reality Deviants, and is now reporting these terrorists to the relevant authorities in the Technocratic Union. Her information is positively corroborated with that of the Watchers and the RD group is identified as a cell of the Rogue Council known as the "Whispers of the Old World". She Volunteers to help apprehend these dangerous Reality Terrorists.

[Some would ask why she would turn against the Rogue Council cell, as it is an unfortunate fact that most newly Enlightened civilians contacted by RD and RT groups become locked in that allegiance. It seems to be that Jennifer's original worldview closely aligned with our own, and the violent and extremist rhetoric of the group against society itself that put her against them.

Jennifer has also said "[The Dreamspeaker's] new age-y transphobic bullshit about us being some sort of mystical link between femininity and masculinity and the "spirits" of the sexes. That might be a good explanation to someone from a thousand years ago, but we have better, more healthy explanations nowadays" also put her on edge with the group.]

29/05/08: Acting under the direction of Grey Suit Jessica Banisher, Jennifer contacts the RT cell, saying that she is ready to join them. She is equipped with Operative recording equipment and sent into the RT Chantry. After spending two hours asking questions provided by the Grey Suits and being shown the Chantry, Banisher raids the Chantry. Due to Jennifer's efforts in reconnaissance the entire operation is pulled of flawlessly, with nearly half the RTs being taken alive for Processing.

[It may seem odd that an experienced Rogue Council group would be taken in by such a novice; but it is important to bear in mind two things: 1) Jennifer has demonstrated extreme merit in Subterfuge even without NWO training, and 2) It is clear that the RTs did not even consider that a newly "Awakened Mage" that they had contacted first would come to the "Evil Technocracy" at all. Typical RD arrogance.]

30/05/08: Impressed by Jennifer Thompson's courage in both alerting the Union and volunteering to infiltrate the Chantry, as well as the ability she showed in doing such, Jessica Banisher extends an invitation to Jennifer to join the Technocratic Union, and especially the NWO Operatives. Jennifer Immediately accepts without coercion.

01/06/08-31/08/08: Jennifer Thompson receives initial Processing from the NWO, and reduces ties with remaining family and friends.

01/09/08: "Jennifer Blade" begins her education at NWO's North American Operative training facility: the Mosaic Hill Facility.

07/12/08: Jennifer Blade received approval through the NWO for a full body reconstructive surgery as part of a joint offer from a Progenitor program: POLYSYLLABIC. She receives a near total rework of her body, as well as the installation of Exomuscle upgrades.

[From what I know, POLYSYLLABIC is a pilot program for a cadre of Enlightened within the Union who are enamored with Exomuscle and want to see the upgrade extended to all Enlightened personnel who will see field duty. I'm honestly not certain that I cannot disagree. Banisher seems to be a part of this group and managed to get her protege onto the list for the initial test run.]

21/01/09: Jennifer Blade is released from the POLYSYLLABIC facility and returns to MHF.

[Of course she was still being medically and psychologically monitored by POLYSLLABIC and NWO, and still is whenever she is not in the field. Though to date she has demonstrated no unanticipated side effects from the procedure. Aside from requiring daily hormonal supplements and requiring an increased caloric intake, she has not been negatively affected by POLYSYLLABIC and seems to be entirely grateful to the Union for her treatment]

01/06/10: Jennifer Blade graduates from the Mosaic Hill Faculty with excellent marks and is noted for an enthusiastic level of loyalty and belief in the Technocracy's goals.
[Especially after POLYSYLLABIC her ability drastically improves despite POLYSYLLABIC having been design to have limited effect on Cognitive abilities. The Progenitor/Iteration-X team have been unable to come up with a satisfactory explanation for the effect. NWO psychiatrists (Such as myself) have drawn the rather prosaic conclusion that without the stress of worrying about perceptions of her gender identity, and the elimination of Dysphoria, she was able to attain her full potential. Of course there is also an element of addition trust and worship of the Union driving her ever harder than before]

02/07/10: Jennifer Blade is assigned to a Black Suit Amalgam covering the West coast under the command of a Jessica Banisher. Jennifer Blade is assigned several missions breaking Traditionalist "anti-vaccination" and "alternative medicine" rings.

[Yes the same Jessica Banisher that gave her the initial recruitment offer. No there isn't anything untoward or nepotistic about it, Banisher just seems to like Jennifer and took her under her wing at the beginning of her career. It happens for promising Enlightened Unionists all the time. As far as the assignments go, Jennifer seems to have taken them somewhat personally, these RDs are hurting people, and she feels required by duty and common decency to stop them]

14/10/10: Jennifer Blade receives a commendation for turning an RD chantry against itself and inducing most of the survivors to surrender for Processing.

22/07/12: Cut off from support, Jennifer Blade and a small command of Sympathizers wage a week-long running battle against a Disciples of Kaczynski and his group of consors in wilds of eastern Oregon after an ambush goes horribly wrong and her superior is killed.

15/04/13: Jennifer Blade is behind a plan a band of Lycanthropes to nearly overwhelm a band of Etherites in the BC portion of the Rocky mountains, then sweep in with a team from her Amalgam to "rescue" the Etherites and completely destroy the entire Lycanthrope nest. The plan succeeds with almost the entire remaining Ehterite group brought in for processing and the Lycanthropes eliminated.

11/12/15: Jennifer is promoted and becomes Jennifer Blackwell after her bravery in an attack on a Nephrandic construct made in haste with few Technocratic elements on hand to prevent a larger disaster.

[Nasty bunch, they were a group of former Verbania Traditions types assembling a bioweapon out of EDE parts and some other RD nastiness. Though we were successful, a number of her colleagues in the amalgam were killed in the assault. And I believe this is why, that of late, Ms. Blackwell has indicated a need for a "change of scenery"]

[Notes on Personality: Off-duty Jennifer Blackwell is usually is usually polite and well spoken. On-duty Blackwell is cold and efficient, every inch the popular image of the Black Suit. She is by choice fanatically loyal to the Technocracy that she feels is leading humanity towards a glorious future and stamping out the last remnants of a dark and regressive past. She's seen first hand how Reality Terrorists try to turn the masses away from the infrastructure and ideas that made them strong.

Ms. Blackwell hates the Traditions and especially the technological Traditionalists that she feels damages Humanity and Reality for temporary personal gratification. Despite this, she gives each one a chance to repent, because even the most selfish and inward-looking person could still hold the ability to start thinking of others and serving both Humanity and the Union.

Her main hobby's at this point seem to be training for assignments and an enthusiasm for swimming and other aquatic sports.

And far as a social life goes, aside from membership in the NWO water polo team, Jennifer Blackwell does not have one. Despite my hints that she she should spend more time in a relaxed state, she spends most of her time preparing for the next assignment, whatever it may be. While her dedication to the Union is more than commendable, it is my feeling that if she continues this way she may end up burning herself out psychologically and require Union resources to repair.]

[Notes on Operational preferences: Ms. Blackwell usually operates by enhancing the almost always existent cracks in unity between RTs and fanning the flames of paranoia, weakening them to the point where the Union can easily sweep up the remnants. She believes that there is nothing better to destroy an opponent with than themselves. Despite this, she is not at all opposed to openly and Ruthlessly hunting down enemies of the Union and eliminating them. As she has done several times, outlasting and outwitting her opponents. (And as a note POLYSYLLABIC seems to have given her confidence that she can push her body beyond the expected, a trait which she has used to great effect against RD opponents)

As well, Blackwell seems to lean towards the faction of the Technocracy that would gleefully resume the Pogrom if let off their leashes.]

Jessica Banisher, is an experienced Operative serving as both a Black and Grey Suit, and of late assigned to a secret internal security unit, having served the Union since her recruitment from Law Enforcement in 1992.

Jennifer Blackwell is something of a favorite of Banisher's. The senior Operative has what could be seen as a soft spot for the younger woman she invited to the Union. Banisher helped Jennifer her find her feet in her first assignments, as well as helping her qualify for her augmentations, and generally likes to see Blackwell succeed

(7 base +2 from Flaws)

(+2) Flaw: Enemies 2
The friends, family, and associates of the Coven that a newly Enlightened Jennifer betrayed to the Technocracy are still hunting for "Jennifer Thompson" due to her betrayal
(+2) Flaw: Rose-Coloured Mirrorshades. (Guide to the Technocracy, page 69)
Jennifer absolutely 100% believes in the Union and the Good it is doing. She will not believe Traditionalist lies about her organization.
(+3) Flaw: Driving Goal: Destruction of non-technoparadigm organizations, and Inhumation of their practitioners
Blackwell has no truck with the live and let live attitude of some in the Union. If left to rot long enough even the most benign RDs start to decay the state of the masses (See the anti-vax rings she broke up earlier in her career). Or will over time become something far worse (The Verbania Nephrandi she helped eliminate
(Bonus!) Flaw: Compulsion: Request Surrenders
Despite their crimes RDs must be given a chance to defect or surrender to the superior Technocracy. Even the most hardened Reality Deviant should given the chance to repent and turn to the only path, the only truth that Humanity has.

MERITS:
Genius + + + (Free)
Master of Red Tape (Free)
The Merit lowers your Social difficulties by two and raises another character's difficulty by two if he tries to mislead or intimidate you
In game terms, most casual deceptions succeed automatically. Subtract two from the difficulty of any roll that involves fooling someone about something important. This Merit will not foil Mind magic, aura-reading or other forms of mystic truth-seeking, but it will deceive any mundane detection (like body language or lie-detectors).
Your mage has an exceptionally sharp natural sense, be it vision, taste, hearing, or whatever. You must choose one sense this Merit affects upon taking it. This sense does not change, and you must take this Merit again to affect a second sense permanently. The difficulties of all dice rolls that relate to the sense in question (e.g., Perception + Awareness to hear a faint noise, taste poison in food, or see an oncoming attacker) are decreased by two. Combined with the sensory Effects (first Rank Effects), this Merit allows the mage to add an additional success to her die roll. For three points, ALL of your mage's senses are incredibly acute.

So, thus far we have three NWO types and a humanoid shoggoth. This is shaping up excellently.

(I've edited my character sheet in on the front page)

@ManusDomine - I'm fairly certain that you can't take both Correspondence and Data, since the latter is the Technocratic version of the former. Even if you could they have so much overlap you're wasting valuable points.

Anyway, a very quick research check makes me like the idea of the Virtual Adepts--I'm just not sure if that'll fit given how everyone's running Technocracy submissions so far! (Even if VA were former Technocracy)

Nah, you just realised who the good guys were and hopped over to the right side! You're NWO or It-X or something now :p

Eh, being a newbie is hard when the lore is as big as Mage seems to be.

On the other hand, it's a gameline I've wanted to try for quite some time!

Most of my knowledge is form Wikiwalking the whitewolf wiki and reading all of Panopticon :p

I've only played nMage before so, I'm not much advanced beyond you

Haha.

I'm actually wondering if I can port Lucie's design over here, it was a nice piece of artwork that turned out irrelevant because the game died really fast.

You can take both Corr and Data, but as noted it's generally a bad idea. If the character requires that level of specialization, limited xp discounts are an option, but at the end of the day you'll definitely be "knitting" a lot.

Right, so @MJ12 Commando pointed out a rather relevant part of the book I was referencing that I had totally forgotten about, so Enhancements (and Devices in general) are cheaper than I thought.

Rule of thumb, take the highest Sphere in the equivalent Rote and double it; that's the point cost, end of the story. The actual result will be different mechanically depending on how big that Sphere Effect actually is, because of the way the rules are written - there's a point where Talismans get cheaper than Artifacts and your effective Arete is no longer equal to the highest Sphere, but the convex hull of the two is just a straight line, so what the hell, White Wolf, why.

Also, much simpler way of explaining Devices and Enhancements: Devices are two points a dot, Enhancements are four. You can "round up", so if you want a Device that's 1 point over or an Enhancement that's 3 points over, I don't care.

@AKuz - FYI, Eidetic Memory and Light Sleeper are both, uh, not very useful. Eidetic Memory can be duplicated ahead of time with a Mind 1 Rote and retroactively with a Mind 1/Time 2 Rote, and also come free with an ADEI; Light Sleeper can be done on the spot with Mind 1 or Life 1, since it's not much of a benefit. (If you want KeepAwake, that's a bigger deal.) If you're going to spend fp on Merits, I'd recommend something you can't do so easily yourself.

Yeah, I actually just took them out myself :p

Right Now I'm trying to figure out exactly what Enhancements to take

Yeah, I don't think I'd contribute much to this game, by the time I've learned enough to contribute on the level of the other applications, they'll probably be closed.

So it goes.

Disregard what my character sheet says.

It is attempting to mislead you! You cannot trust it!

(I'll just go unfuck my character sheet and add the things that it lacks...)

So, using an example of the rote Mind Empowerment:

I want to know gut, so I use my Enhancement to buy Mind Empowerment.

Mind Empowerment is a level 1 rote, so I pay 4 points to get it, but if I want to purchase it as a device I pay 2 points, am I correct?

How many successes, then does it count as having rolled? Mind Empowerment makes one smarter and think faster and more efficiently, based on the amount of successes on the Effect roll, but what do I do here?

EDIT: Nevermind, found the answer in Forged By Dragon's Fire.

You roll your own Enlightenment, one success triggers the effect.

Generally underpowered, actually.

Universal Nanotech Interface is a 2pt Enhancement that mostly operates as a focus, guaranteeing a connection to any technological tool. As an additional effect, the user may roll Enlightenment + 1 to generate a Data 1 augment rote on any operation with the connected tool, or else attempt to overcome countermagic wards, even if he does not possess the Data Sphere.

Neurochemical Clarity Implant is a 2pt Enhancement that permanently increases Cognition by 1.

Skin-Mounted Holographic Projector is a 4 pt Enhancement that applies a Data 2 cloaking effect on yourself when activated. Roll Enlightenment + 2: every success after the first applies as an external penalty to all opposed rolls that require visual targeting of the character, including magic, as per the cloaking rules under Wards. (Which, no, have not actually been written yet.)

Emergency Medi-Gel Injectors is a 4 pt Enhancement that recovers all non-aggravated damage the first time you are brought to Mauled in a scene. Can only be used once a chapter.

Ehh, on nagging, I'm going to try reading Panopticon Quest and seeing if that sparks any inspiration enough to overcome my newness to the setting.
