Venturing the Wild (Sequel to Mould Breaking / Zelda: BotW)

The only bit that felt odd was that he referred to a mere 100 year old sword as ancient. That's not ancient in the setting. That's barely through the life span of one smith. ;) Considering that there are tons of ruins all thousands of years old. I'd consider anything younger than 1000 or so rather recent.

The other thing that was bugging me was the name Death Mountain. I can't respect that name when you have Gorons always using it to build their village. Doesn't seem very Death like when you think about it. It should have been called Goron Mountain. Not like they ever live anywhere else.

His time with the Gorons seemed to blend as one long montage of metalwork/mining.

It's nice to see him out and about again.

The Goron section fought me hard, I honestly think I should have put them at another stage, but at the same time delaying the blacksmithing perk would have slowed a lot of things. They are the least human/hylian of the bunch so it's a bit harder to relate to them. It got actually rewritten a few times and there were a few sections that were dropped because just didn't work.

Chapter 16

Venturing the Wild – 16

Magnus easily put together a small fire and lit it in the matter of minutes, sitting by it once it was going steadily. He took a moment to lean back and look up, it had been more than a few months since he had seen the sky like this. The lava flows from Death Mountain maintained a constant level of light at all hours of the day, making the sky a bit harder to observe freely.

He set some wild vegetables to cook as he grabbed the Royal Broadsword and a whetstone before starting to run maintenance on the weapon. It didn't take him more than a few sweeps before he felt a perk slot in place. His grip didn't change much, but there was enough difference in the pressure of the stone and the angle it used to come down that the little rust on the blade's edge disappeared as if it had never been there.

The weapon was a thing of beauty, it had well earned the title of royal weapon. It was obvious some enchantments had been laid upon it, because the gold was barely marked, but it was obvious the blade had seen actual battle. If he remembered his lessons well, the sword's looks had been based on the Master Sword, making him wonder how it fared in comparison.

He put the whetstone down and stood up, grabbing the broadsword firmly with both hands and swung it a couple of times. The balance was impeccable and the weight felt perfect to slash and stab. If he was going to keep it, it would need a proper sheath, it was a bit too ostentatious to carry in the open.

He placed it down and started to run maintenance on the bow next, which mostly led to him fixing the tension of the drawstring. The rest of the weapon barely needed a good cleaning. It was leagues above his old Soldier Bow. Though once more the ostentatious look kept him from simply upgrading from his Soldier Bow.

He finally grabbed the halberd and started to clean the weapon. It was much harder than the blade, the multiple curved edges required much more care and the use of a steady hand. It was still lost to the knowledge provided by his new skill, and after a good cleaning it was sparkling like new.

"System would like to inform User the basic Inventory has been unlocked." Magnus didn't need to even gesture for the system to explain. "Inventory allows User to store objects in a pocket dimension. Basic Inventory provides User with eight cubic meters of continuous space."

"Is this shape immutable?" He asked.

"Basic Inventory doesn't provide the ability to reshape storage space. It doesn't provide time-lock protections. It doesn't provide individual storage. It doesn't provide-"

"That's enough." He cut it off and sighed. It was very basic apparently, but it would be useful. "Does it provide a way to quickly store and retrieve items?"

"Negative, Basic Inventory only provides access to pocket dimension to User." He grumbled a bit. "Basic Inventory's features will grow with time."

He just knew the answer, but he still had to ask. "How big can it get? And what kind of abilities?"

"Given User's Potential, Basic Inventory's max size is: infinite."

"What would I even do with infinite space? Store a planet?" He thought out loud.

"It wouldn't be the first time."

"What?" He quickly prompted, but received no answer to the comment. "What else does the inventory have?"

"Features available to unlock: time-lock, discrete storage, living being storage, weapon equip-"

"What would it take to unlock weapon equip?"

"Basic Inventory's normal use by an armed individual will unlock weapon equip. Given User's Potential, expected time: error."

He breathed in deep and let it out. Deciding that worrying more was only going to be for the worst, he quickly summoned the inventory to see how it worked. Instantly a holographic box appeared in front of it. It was definitely taller than him.

"I take it that the basic inventory can only be summoned in an area where I've the space for it?" He prompted.

"Basic Inventory needs a minimum of one cubic meter of free space to access at the moment."

He thought about it, better than what he expected, especially if it would grow larger with time. He grabbed the halberd and pushed it into the holographic box. The moment he let go, the weapon remained stuck in place.

"Basic Inventory's space lacks gravity."

"That will make it easier to store things… hopefully." He chuckled and pushed the Royal Bow and the Broadsword inside, he wouldn't need them at the moment, especially because he would need to properly train with the two melee weapons.

Next went a number of things he had been carrying in his backpack, like the improved alchemy set in its pretty wood box he had crafted to store it safely. It still wasn't heat-proof and a few pieces had been broken during further tests, but it worked quite well for what he had prepared.

He had more than once ended melting down the whole set and remaking it, not just because they broke, but because some use had revealed some problems with the original designs. Now they were all carefully stored, he had plans to get something along the lines of velvet to inline the box and prevent the pieces from breaking or scratching.

He didn't store any of his perishables, without a time-lock it was just asking for them to rot inside. He would have to see about preparing some long-term rations to keep inside, though.

Without a gesture the holographic cube shrank to nonexistence, taking everything he had put inside the space off the face of Hyrule. After that he sat down by the fire and grabbed the pot that had been over the fire, compared to Death Mountain, the fire felt almost lukewarm. If anything it was a familiar sensation.

He quickly chowed down, suddenly feeling much hunger he had in months. He still enjoyed the flavors, so different from the meats and vegetables he usually consumed in Goron City. Soon there was nothing left and he was scraping the inside of the pot for the last bits, and just in time, because the night was about to get interesting.

The first sign was the sudden change in the wind, not like a strong storm was coming or as if everything had stalled. Instead it was a gentle caress on his back warning him danger was close, it made Magnus turn to the stone statue that stood as still and silent as it had been a moment before.

Mija had been right about the bridge being the only way to access the island, unless you were a Rito, the Yiga came without a sound. There were suddenly three figures standing by the island's entrance, two looking practically identical to those that had attacked him so many months before, the other was quite a contrast.

They towered over the other two, even more as they were slightly hunched over while the larger one stood tall and straight. Of broad shoulders and an impressively well trained body. The hood added a strange air to the Yiga, especially as they were still wearing the same mask as the other two.

He gave a look at their weapons next. The two smaller Yiga, and only smaller in comparison to the tall one as they were still taller than him, held half-moon sickles; their wicked edges and sharp tips promised to cause great damage. He also noticed a bow on the back of one of the two smaller Yiga. While the taller one held a blade that reminded him of the Sheikah's Eightfold blade, albeit its design had been changed in a way he couldn't discern he used for.

Magnus got up, there was no need to keep himself open to attack, though he still took a moment to pat the little dust that had stuck to his clothes. There were no words to give, even when he felt a strange memory bubble up in his mind about the advantages of middle-fight banter. Though he didn't expect the Yiga to be the talkative sorts, they either wanted him dead or captured.

The two smaller ones moved first, coming at him from the sides, once more perfectly mirroring each other's movement. He didn't let them approach him unimpeded and threw a couple of his needles at one as he used Graceful to parry the other's attack.

That didn't stop them from pressuring their attack while the third just watched at the moment. Magnus quickly found himself having to split his attention between the two foot soldiers with the added pressure of the blade user's attention on him.

He was glad to have picked the mace instead of his sword, the blunt weapon was just better to deal with the two Yiga and was visibly damaging their sickles each time they made contact. Of course he wasn't going to be just allowed to parry and deal with the two and the blade user soon joined the fight in quite the spectacular manner.

Magnus' reflexes didn't fail him and quickly jumped away when a nearly invisible blade of wind cut the spot he had been standing. Looking up showed it had come from the Yiga's blade, which they were slowly rising again as they walked in his direction.

The fight quickly grew more difficult as the two foot soldiers started to teleport around and break their rhythm. And with the elite pushing from the distance he was starting to find it harder. It was especially frustrating that it was now obvious they were going to try and capture him, though not by being gentle exactly.

His breathing was growing deeper as his body tried to grab as much oxygen from the air as possible. He gave the status of the goddess a look and internally apologized for what he was about to do, she was a goddess of Light after all.

His next breath filled his lungs before he pulled hard on his Dark element. His chest started to feel cold as the air inside mixed with the element more and more. And then he blew out with all his strength, a dark cloud billowed out.

Darker than any ash plume Death Mountain had ever spouted, it spread out quickly, swallowing any and all light sources as complete magical darkness the whole area, leaving the Yiga nearly blind.

The three Yiga quickly regrouped when their target blanketed the area in darkness.

The Blademaster raised a hand and gestured to them to keep their guards up, causing both of them to nod and raise their weapons as they looked around.

It wasn't the most useful thing, they could barely see a meter away from themselves and only their training had allowed them to regroup so easily. Worst of all, it seemed that the darkness was dimming noises.

The Yiga quickly looked around as they thought something had caught their eye, there had been a blink of light in the darkness. They quickly gestured to the other two about something possibly being there.

The Blademaster looked around warily as something was weaving through the darkness, they recognized the glint of a blade or the movements of a hammer. But there were other things moving there.

They swung their Windcleaver, but whatever he had aimed blindly simply moved off the way and finally stepped close enough for them to see. It looked Hylian at first, but it was wearing some kind of body-tight armor with a flat glass-like material covering their face. It was definitely feminine and armed with a pair of long sticks that were used with ease.

She appeared to look at them and cockily ignore them, which wasn't as bad as when more of them stepped out from the darkness. They all wore similar and strange armor, and were also armed.

One of the foot soldiers pulled their bow off their back and unloaded a few arrows into the darkness. But without any reaction, it was hard to know if it had even hit something.

The three Yiga couldn't help but stiffen as more and more figures seemed to appear in the middle of the darkness, worse the three of them suddenly felt as if the ground was disappearing from under their feet when the silhouette of a massive hand reached out of the darkness.

The Blademaster didn't need a warning, it appeared they were preparing to attack, they gestured for retreat. The two Footsoldiers didn't doubt their orders and poofed away in a rain of seals before they followed through too. The emergency escape would put them far enough to be safe.

They turned for a moment to look at the cloud of darkness in the distance before turning away and heading back to base, the leader would want to know about this.

Magnus held on as long as he could before he released his hold on the elements that saturated the area.

The illusions of his family were the first to disappear, it hurt a bit to see them leave so suddenly. But it was reassuring to know they were out there and it was technically he who was lost, he could also create them again if he wanted to see them.

Magnus would have to keep the fact he could create illusions as much as a secret as possible, he already doubted the trick would work twice. It was a miracle the Darkness pressure trick had convinced the Yiga that something huge was shaking the island with its presence alone.

The darkness slowly was burned away by the light from the moon and the stars, though it also did so much faster around the goddess statue.

He dragged himself over to the fire and slowly threw some sticks into it to revive it. He hadn't felt this tired in forever, it brought up how much he had actually lost in the ritual. Thankfully it had also brought back memories of how to improve, or at least how he had done the first time, his future months would be grueling and quite repetitive. But he should much more easily recover his actual skill with magic, and possibly remember some useful spells in the process.

He took a moment to look at the arrow embedded on his arm. It was completely non-lethal and thanks to the System he wasn't really feeling it. But there was no reason to leave it there.

He retrieved the first aid kit from the inventory and carefully removed the arrow before treating the small wound. Thankfully they hadn't used any kind of poison and the wound was easy to clean. A mix of dried herbs with some water was all it needed to help it close up; given his body it wouldn't leave a scar.

He couldn't help but laugh a bit as he felt tiredness coax him to sleep. He felt safe enough, because in just a couple of blinks, dreamland had claimed him.

Magnus woke up and for the first time in a while he felt still a bit tired, this wasn't too much of a surprise after having overextended himself that way the night before. It was like the pleasurable heat in muscles after a good training and rest, slightly itching, but healing. He had also slept for more than two hours straight for the first time since he had arrived in Hyrule.

He easily revived the fire and sat there to enjoy the moment. It was still pretty late at night, or very early in the morning. He hoped Mija didn't worry too much about the lightshow… maybe he should see about going over to make sure she knew he was okay.

After a few minutes he felt enough like himself that he got up, doused the fire completely dead and retrieved his backpack before walking in the direction of the Fairy Fountain.

He couldn't help but wonder if his parents were as touchy as the fairy was being with him.

"Are you sure you're okay?" She asked for the n-th time as she handled him like a doll.

"Yes, Mija, the only severe injury already healed." He tried to soothe her, but it didn't help her panic had been shared by the smaller fairies who were slipping in and out of his clothes to make sure of his words.

"How can I not worry? That unnatural darkness covered the island and I couldn't feel anything." She said as she finally placed him back down.

"Oh… that was me." He admitted to being a bit embarrassed.

"Oh?"

He nodded and took a small breath before blowing some short-lived darkness. "It's actually more of a party-trick, but can be used to create a smoke screen."

Mija hummed and poked the cloud of darkness before rubbing her fingers together. "It's the first time I've seen darkness behave like this, it's usually such an ugly and aggressive thing."

"Oh, it can be much worse." He admitted too. "I could technically use it to consume. But it's dangerous for me to use it like that, even more so than to others. It'll still eat through light and sound quite easily unless I put a stop to it."

"Now that sounds closer to the Darkness I know of." She laughed as she checked her fingers closer.

"Well, my Light can be as bad, just as burning and harsh." He stated solemnly. "Both have their good and bad sides, their advantages and disadvantages." He explained. "But I know that, that's why I take good care of them, and they take good care of me."

Mija nodded. "That's wise of you."

Magnus nodded, internally wanting to remember where he read it, because part of him was pretty sure he hadn't thought it himself.

After a few minutes of soothing the Great Fairy, and the little ones too, Magnus thanked her for worrying for him and assured her he was okay and would continue his way now.

He passed by the bridge by the time the sun was rising and soon reached the intersection where he would be turning to head West. What he didn't expect was to find a short old man bent over panting, and complaining loud about age being a problem.

"Are you okay, sir?" Magnus prompted once he was close enough.

The first thing he noticed when the man straightened to look at him was the strange pair of goggles covering his eyes, the second was that the man was definitely a Sheikah, he had doubted it at first given that white hair was usually just a sign of old age.

"...Oh? Yes!… I'm just suffering the effects of… not having run in years." He admitted and cackled.

Magnus reached into his pack and pulled the water bottle, offering it to the old man. "It must be important if you're running in this area, there's nothing too important as far as I know." Outside of the Fairy Fountain to the South, he thought to himself.

The old man took the bottle and happily chugged from it before stopping and looking at it curiously.

"That's exactly why I'm here!" He said as he looked at the bottle. "Just last night there was a very strange phenomenon on the island to the South. As a researcher I've to know what happened!" They started and gestured to said island.

The sudden chord that sounded as he finished speaking surprised him more than the knowledge someone else had seen him. Though there was something nagging in the back of his head.

"Though I've something new to study, this bottle!" He gestured to it. "How come it can hold so much water?!"

Magnus rubbed his chin, mostly surprised the old man had noticed it. "Well, if I remember right, it's a magically created shunted space combined with an alchemical filter that utilized a bit of the water loaded into it to operate. It's effectively breaking down water into energy to power the expanded space, but its efficiency means that the cost is negligible and will actually burn through any contaminants and pollutants first before using the actual water." He recited the knowledge that had bubbled up in his memory.

"...can I keep it?" The man asked.

"I apologize, but I still need it." Magnus admitted. He had only found two in the small storage room. Though the rest of the ship may have more. "By the way, I'm Magnus. I take you're Robbie, right?" He asked after finally remembering the man's name.

"How do you know that?!" The old man turned to him, and for a moment both of his goggles focused on him. Most would have found it intimidating. His siblings were worse sometimes.

"When I arrived in Hyrule I met with Lady Impa, she told me about two Sheikah researchers, Purah over in Hateno and you sir here in the Akkala region." He answered.

"How's that old woman?"

"Busy in Kakariko Village, she's training her granddaughter Paya to take her spot in a few years. As for Purah, I've no idea, I've not visited Hateno village yet. I initiated my trip in the Lanayru region and after spending two months in Kakariko Village I moved to Death Mountain to learn from the Goron, and spent the whole winter with them. I practically left yesterday and was visiting the Great Fairy Mija."

"Ahh… I've not visited her in a while…" Robbie mused. "I've not left my home in a while actually." He laughed. "That's okay, you said you were here yesterday, right? Tell me what you saw!" The old Sheikah practically ordered and gestured at him, one of those musical chords ran again.

This time Magnus could see it came from the strange backpack he was wearing.

"Well…" He quickly told the man about his meeting with the Yiga.

"Bah! Yiga members, always bad news." Robbie shook his head.

"I managed to make them run, but I doubt the trick will work again." He admitted.

"Good, you've to fight smarter, not harder." His words were followed by a chord.

"Well, I've been slowly adapting the Sheikah techniques to my own system. But not everything works the same." Magnus admitted.

"Hmm…" Robbie gave him a good look. "Tell me kid, what are your plans?"

"My plan was to head to the stable from here, then back South and visit the Zora Domain to find a teacher to learn from the next few months." Magnus answered.

The old man nodded. "Then come with me, spend some time in my lab and I will teach you a few things about crafting. In exchange you let me study one of those bottles you have, the advances I could produce from them could revolutionize Hyrule if I manage to make them easy enough to reproduce."

Magnus thought about it, it was very tempting, and he had indeed thought about approaching the researcher at some point in the future. After some meditation on it, he accepted.

"Sounds good to me, and I like the idea of helping Hyrule at large."

"Good, good," Robbie laughed and rubbed his hands, "I'm sure my wife won't be too bothered by having someone else at home, our son left just a bit ago to explore and learn."

"There's also a few things about me I will have to tell you. But let's get to your place, because it will most likely lead to a lot of questions." The young man admitted.

"Uh, now you're making me curious." Robbie said as he turned towards the North and started walking.

Magnus chuckled and followed the old man. He was just as curious about what kind of knowledge they could learn from each other.

Yeah Good Choice of Sheikah researcher. Purah is about to hit her Great Breakthrough in Runes and you don't want to get caught up in that.

Chapter 17

Venturing the Wild – 17

For being nearly a hundred and twenty years old, Robbie turned out to be quite a spry old man and they only needed a few hours to make their way back to his place. Well, first they made it to East Akkala Stable at the foot of the hill the lab resided on top of.

"Director." A dark-skinned Hylian of blonde hair approached us. "Did you find what the disturbance was all about?"

"Ah, Aya, yes, yes. Seems you were right, getting out of my lab for a bit did lead to some interesting discoveries." The old man admitted with a wry smile.

The Hylian giggled and turned to look at Magnus. "And who is this? A traveler?"

"This is Magnus, he will be learning at the lab for a bit." Robbie said, making him nod in greeting.

Aya looked at him, measuring him up, after a moment she nodded. "I see, then I will see you around, Magnus. And please come out more frequently, director, staying cooped up all day in there, don't make me talk to your wife."

Robbie's goggles rolled as if they were his eyes and practically dragged him up the hill. Magnus could only smile and follow along, it was nice to see the area wasn't as empty as he had thought at first. Just because there was no 'settlement' didn't mean people didn't live in the area.

The building was quite impressive. If Magnus had to guess, it had been a lighthouse in the far past given just how solid the construction was of what had been left. On top of a massive telescope and crane set had been built. On the side rested a pile of destroyed, disarmed, rusted and abandoned guardians, on the other there was some kind of forge glowing blue and holding a similarly blue fire going.

Robbie approached it, pressed his hand on the side and nodded.

The old man turned to look at Magnus. "This," he gestured to the glowing totem, "is the secret of Sheikah technology, the blue flame!" A chord marked his words. "This is not magic, but still powers all the Sheikah technology, all guardians, the divine beasts and even the shrine of resur- nevermind the last one." He grumbled and continued. "My ancestors created it in a way I have still not revealed the secrets from, but I've managed to use it to create new things. Come, follow me and I will show you the fruit of my research!" Another chord sounded as he headed into the lab.

"Robbie, is that you?" A blonde Hylian woman prompted as the two of them entered. "I heard your silly accompaniment." There was warmth in her voice.

"Jerrin," he answered in a similar manner, "I've brought a visitor, and prospective student."

"Greetings." Magnus bowed his head to her. "I'm Magnus."

Before Jerrin could say anything, Robbie started speaking. "He was the source of the disturbance… what did you do exactly?" He turned to look at him.

"I used some darkness and light to trick the Yiga attacking me into thinking I had more people as support."

"Can you do it again?" The old man prompted.

Magnus nodded. "Yup, just remember it's not real." He breathed in and blew through a nearly closed fist, as if he was using a trumpet.

A much more controlled cloud of Darkness spilled out, it easily held a vague oval shape, sagging towards the bottom. The room visibly grew darker as the Darkness cloud swallowed all light that hit the ethereal construct.

"Very impressive." Robbie observed it closer.

"It's not done, that's just the first step." Magnus said and concentrated on the element of Light.

This part was a bit harder, especially in such restricted space, and one so well illuminated. But after a bit a pale hand with nails painted green reached out, grabbing onto the edge of the cloud of Darkness to open it up like a passage. The hand was connected with a similarly pale skin, the only color that showed all the way to her shoulder were the green tribal-like tattoos decorating her skin.

The young woman that appeared to step out of the darkness was his sister Claire, who shared his mother's blood. She was about his height, as noted before her skin was practically chalk white and almost glowing, the green tattoos she had gotten did glow, same as her eyes, though that only came up when she was feeling emotional. His most recent memories of her were of her hair having turned orange, so he went with that, honestly he didn't remember if she had ever set a color for it.

A moment later the illusion collapsed on itself as his control over the Darkness slipped, once that happened, the Light was free to break away from the construct and dissipate.

"Who was that?" Jerrin prompted.

"My sister Claire, or well, half sister since we share a mother." Magnus explained.

Robbie stepped forward, approaching the spot the illusion had been cast, his goggles moved around, inspecting everything. "Very impressive, I don't think I have seen light and dark used that way."

"It's a trick I remembered not too long ago." He admitted. "And works mostly because both elements are sourced from me, their interaction can get particular."

The old man nodded. "So you created a much larger one." He stated.

Magnus nodded. "Yes, it was also night so it was much easier to saturate the area before creating as many illusions of my siblings as I could. The hardest part was messing with their sense of balance to induce vertigo, which was done by brute forcing a pressure change with Light and Dark, which neither are good at."

"Interesting… it does give me some good ideas." Robbie mused and Jerrin rolled her eyes.

"Still, I promised to tell you my story once we arrived." Magnus said and once the three of them had sat down he proceeded to tell the married couple of researchers about the nature of his arrival to Hyrule.

Once he finished talking the two older people kept their thoughtful silence for a few moments.

Jerrin once more felt like the voice of reason. "That sounded very irresponsible of you, and your family to allow you to do that."

"Maybe, but it honestly feels mild compared to something I remember getting into with my siblings. There was one time when we were eight and decided to see what it felt to be in each other's bodies, so we got our minds switched around a few times. Or the time we got turned into mice, the time we decided to live a whole day with inverted gravity, or the time… well, you could say my life even before coming to Hyrule was very interesting, and I still don't remember all of it." Magnus told her.

It didn't seem to ease the older Hylian's impression.

Robbie, instead nodded to himself. "I was right in offering you a chance to study under me, not only do I get a student with a high potential," Magnus chuckled at the word, "but I can also throw it at Purah's face for not wanting to teach my son." He nodded to himself, followed by one of those chords.

He then seemed to remember something. "Also, let me show you my work." He laughed jovially and jumped off his chair to move to the center of the room. "This is my creation, the ancient oven, I managed to build it using what I learned from the ancient Sheikah technology, fed the necessary materials it can reconstruct old parts and even create some new ones I designed myself."

Magnus looked at it, he found it pretty similar to Dogu figurines, which fit given the Sheikah's very Japanese aesthetics. Robbie picked something off the table and showed it to him.

"This is an example, the Ancient Arrow." He explained and tapped carefully on the oversized head, causing it to open and project a glowing blue edge reminding him of the same blue flame and energy the Sheikah used. "It was originally designed to deal with the Calamity once it awoke, now it's just measurably more effective against Guardians and similar threats." He added regretfully.

Jerrin interrupted the moment. "If you'll be staying we will have to talk about accommodations, you can stay in our son's room since he's traveling." She stated and soon they were discussing some other subjects like the division of chores and such.

Magnus was quite hopeful for his stay at the lab, he already had a few ideas to discuss with the two of them for things to do.

Kohga, leader of the Yiga clan, was grumbling to himself, maybe a bit louder than he should. But he was the damn leader of the clan and everyone knew better than to open their mouths just because he was being loud. He would be as loud as he wanted!

He kicked the ground a couple of times in frustration before he resumed walking, part of him already dreaded meeting the elders he was going to visit. The mission had been a failure, but in that failure something important had been learned.

He had been sure that sending two foot soldiers and a blade master would have been more than enough to capture the traveler. Maybe it was because he had given the order to capture that they had gone easy on him.

Not only had the traveler fought back, but apparently managed to summon some kind of back-up they had never seen before. He still didn't trust the comment about summoning a giant of some kind.

He would have called them cowards for running away instead of fighting like proper Yiga. But bringing the news of the Traveler's abilities was indeed a boon, the idea that they were capable of creating such unnatural darkness and summoning some kind of ghostly knights. It was like Calamity's abilities.

Kohga stopped walking and fixed his clothes and mask, made sure his hair was in place and faced the door in front of him. He breathed in deep to tuck his belly a bit before he pushed the door aside and entered the room.

"Elders, I bring news about a way to possibly revive the Calamity." He stated triumphantly.

If he played things right, maybe there was still a way to profit from the Traveler's presence for his clan.

Magnus found it very easy to click into a new routine with Robbie and Jerrin.

If anything he had quite the amount of free time during the morning and nights, meaning he had resumed his morning routine of training.

After that came a few chores for the day, cleaning both the laboratory and living areas before preparing some food for the day. After that Magnus' job was to go through all notes the two researchers had and utilize his system to organize and archive them.

While the two of them were quite organized, there were decades of research notes, papers, annotations, ideas, commentaries, observations, experiments and who knows what else. It had only taken an offer from him to utilize the System to put things in order to be practically ordered to do so.

Not only helped a lot in familiarizing with things, but also pushed him quickly into acquiring a new perk that fit the situation like a glove. It provided him with knowledge and experience for proper scientific documentation, not just organizing it, but understanding and more easily drawing correct conclusions even from fragmented clues of information.

He was glad to have learned to speak and read Hylian, though he was also quickly learning the meaning of Sheikah runes as he transcribed all the knowledge in. It was also around the third day of just inputting knowledge that he decided it would make it harder later on if he didn't start to organize things as he added them.

This quickly devolved when the effects of his latest perk were noticed by Robbie and Jerrin. There was no actual visible effect, but the multiple screens projected in front of him.

"Uh, I barely remember having written that." Jerrin commented as she eyed one of the entries concerning the input system of the Ancient Oven.

Magnus looked at it. "Oh, that's because you didn't write it about the Ancient Oven, you see the different background color? That signals it's actually been added from another point," he tapped on it, causing a second screen to open up, "as you can see, it comes from this study of general input systems in Sheikah tech, I just felt it complemented very effectively the description of the system." He explained. "Especially because it explains something you go over a few paragraphs below while also giving the reader a good direction if they want to know more about the subject."

He was actually pretty proud of how he was managing to organize things, the joys of digital media and its advantages over physical storage when dealing with large amounts of data.

"You know, we never thought about adapting the Sheikah Slate to provide this kind of function. It would have certainly made a lot of note keeping much easier." Robbie said out loud, though it appeared to be mostly to himself.

"Sheikah Slate?" Magnus asked as he continued working.

The old man nodded. "It was one of the pieces of ancient tech we managed to recover during the initial excavations and get it working. It's a handheld tool that allows its user to interact with all other Sheikah Technology along with providing a number of useful abilities." He said and drew a rectangle with his fingers. "In a way it's much like your System. Can't tell you much of the specifications as Purah took the lead in getting it working, but I can tell you we wanted to reproduce it as its use would have been invaluable in the efforts of fighting Calamity Ganon."

"Can't you use the Ancient Oven for it?" He prompted.

Both adults shook their heads. "No, even now Cherry's not advanced enough to reproduce the Slate." Robbie answered. "Maybe if I had Purah's notes I could get it to cobble something very basic together. But the Sheikah Slate was on the level of the Divine Beasts in complexity, too advanced unfortunately."

While the subject of reproducing the slate was put aside for the moment, the two researchers had regained a sort-of fire and taken quite the interest in not just Magnus' work with their documentation. But also finding a way to generate some method for accessing the digitally stored information.

He was a bit surprised when a week after he arrived the Ancient Oven suddenly turned off during a maintenance routine.

"Ah! The flame went out." Robbie stated.

"It looks that way." Jerrin asserted.

"What does that mean?" Magnus asked.

Robbie turned to him. "You remember the flame I showed you on the first day? Well, that's not a source of blue flame, more of a receptacle, the actual source is on the hill next to it." He answered. "If you go out at night you can make it flicker in the distance, one trip lasts quite a bit, but it was our son, Grante, who used to take the trips over. Since he left to travel I forgot we had not set a replacement."

The old man grumbled and continued. "I will have to go do it quickly."

"You can't go, Robbie, you're too old and there are monsters on that hill." Jerrin reproached him.

The young man thought about it and pointed at himself. "So I should go instead, I'm definitely capable of fighting monsters and I can easily run away if necessary."

He certainly had no problem about it, plus it would be nice to go out and stretch his legs, back in Death Mountain it had become a bit of a problem to find a good moment for himself given how busy he had gotten himself.

Jerrin nodded and without a word grabbed a torch before handing it over. "Thank you for keeping this old coot from hurting himself." Robbie just flinched embarrassed.

Magnus laughed a bit and took the torch before nodding to her and walking out of the laboratory. Looking in the direction of the other hill he could actually make the faint flicker of blue.

The distance between hills was a bit too far for him to blink across, forcing him to head down by foot to a better position to do the jump. He really hoped there was a monster on the other hill to make up for the trip.

Prince Sidon was feeling more than a bit nervous. He had expected Magnus to arrive at the Zora Domain a few days earlier, but time had passed and there had been no news of the traveler.

He had sent some of his people out to confirm he had left Death Mountain and many had confirmed to have seen him heading down the path and even stayed in the Foothill Stable for a short time afterwards. But after that he seemed to disappear.

"My prince." A Zora guard approached him. "We have er… news about the traveler."

"Tell me." He ordered as gently as possible.

"He hasn't been seen in any stable South from the Foothill Stable and there's been no news about a purple-haired traveler, but we did find signs that the Hinox West from the Akkala Falls was felled not long ago." The guard explained.

"Did anyone in the stable to the North from there see anything?" He asked.

"No sir."

"If he didn't head there, then where he…" Sidon stopped as he connected the dots. "The Great Fairy Fountain! She must have seen him." He turned to the guard. "Spread the message that I will go look for the traveler myself, I think I know where he went."

"Prince-"

The words were lost as the Zora prince rushed off the edge and into the waters below. He swam quickly North and used one of the underwater channels that fed the spring for Toto Lake; it was the fastest way to get to the falls on the other side of the mountains. He would have liked to ride the water all the way to the lake, but the elevated East wall on the lake would make it pretty hard for him to climb.

Instead he stopped before taking the falls down to the lake and took the road East, it felt frustrating for the prince to have to walk when he wanted to rush. But at the same time he knew there was no rushing, a few more minutes now didn't change Magnus hadn't been seen for days.

Soon he had to step off the road to head in the direction of the Great Fairy Fountain. Instantly he noticed just how lucious the area was, there were blooming flowers everywhere and animals scurrying all over the place. The sound of dozens of tiny feet splashing in puddles and rushing through moist bushes.

He felt a bit guilty for not having visited the Fairy in a long time, especially when she basically made sure the area thrived. Though he did remember the area being a bit more sparse, and it hadn't been long enough for the Akkala Maples to have grown so much, he actually was pretty sure these trees didn't grow to more than ten meters in height, and these were easily reaching double that and growing thicker.

In comparison he wasn't surprised to see the fountain in full bloom, surrounded by plants, critters and more than a few small fairies flickering constantly. Sidon stepped up the mushrooms, Mija didn't make herself wait as she emerged in full glory.

"Ah! If it isn't the little Prince, my oh my, how have you grown." She greeted him jovially.

"Greetings Great Fairy Mija, I came to inquire if a traveler called Magnus came around in the last few days." He decided to go straight to the point.

"Oh yes, the little man," she laughed softly, "he came around about ten days ago, he filled me with so much energy…" Mija shivered, causing her accessories to tinkle, "you can see the results of that."

He nodded to her words. "I can see, it's good to see that Magnus could help. But I came because no one has seen him after heading in this direction."

"He arrived late in the day and headed to Tarrey island to pass the night, apparently he was attacked by Yiga there." Sidon stiffened and Mija just laughed. "Oh, don't make that face. The young man got away safely, he even made sure to come back and reassure me he was okay after it happened."

That eased his worries, though it didn't completely exclude the possibility he was attacked again shortly after.

"Then do you know what he did after he left the second time?"

"He told me he was going to head North and then West to go around the lake towards the stable before heading towards the Zora Domain. But if he never-" She stopped talking when one of the fairies fluttering around forced itself up towards her ear.

Sidon knew that technically all fairies could speak, it was just that none could understand their voice outside of other fairies and similar beings.

"Oh… oh… I see...You're in luck, young prince. It seems this little one decided to follow Magnus after he left the second time, apparently she was a curious one." Mija started and poked the fairy, the glowing being tinkled around happily, playing with her finger. "She says Magnus met an old man where the road splits and headed further North after talking for a bit. She didn't dare go closer, so she didn't hear, but it appeared it wasn't forced."

Sidon nodded. "Thank you for the news, Great Fairy Mija, and you little fairy." He smiled honestly, feeling a sense of relief.

Mija laughed softly. "Don't worry, little prince, you're just worrying for a friend after all." He nodded to her words and once more thanked her, but as he prepared to leave she stopped him. "Don't rush, I do have a little gift for such an honorable worry."

Sidon stopped confused and faced the fairy.

"As you can see, Magnus really provided me with a lot of extra energy, enough I can bestow a little boon upon you to make your search easier." She explained and leaned down, her hands gently wrapping around his body and pulling the Zora closer.

From outside it may look like a kiss, but the prince's been modestly trained in the basics of magic. He can observe the Great Fairy's blessing wrap around him, reinforcing his clothing in multiple levels. It's also a very relaxing and personal experience.

"There we go." Mija placed him down again. "It should provide you with some of the speed you enjoy in water on land."

"Once more you've my gratitude." Sidon bowed. "I will be going now, though I promise to try and come around more often, I think we Zora have forgotten the services the Great Fairies provide to our region."

Mija just rolled her eyes and giggled, wishing him well.

Sidon quickly returned to the road before giving the blessing a try and started running through the road. He was used to going fast being one of the fastest Zora in the kingdom, but that was in water, on land he was as fast as any Hylian, maybe even a bit slower given how moving in land felt almost awkward and forced.

Now he felt the same comfort on land than in water, it allowed him to swim through the air without actually swimming. It made its way to the East Akkala Stable very quickly.

Chapter 18

Venturing the Wild – 18

Magnus wasn't being lazy in his way to the source of the Blue Flame, and while he would need to work on the distance of his blinks to make it across the valley between hills, it was still pretty useful to safely climb up and down said hills.

It still took him a bit to get there, in part because he was being careful about the possibility of coming across a monster. There had been a number of wild animals, even some very nicely sized boars, which was surprising given it was early in Spring. He made a mental note to keep an eye on them because one could provide a good amount of meat for a long time given their size.

It almost surprised him that there were no monsters in the area by the time he reached the Ancient Furnace. But maybe it was for the better, he wasn't bloodthirsty. Even if he certainly enjoyed getting into blood-pumping situations.

The furnace was strange. The design was very similar to the one that was installed just outside of the laboratory, it brought to mind three garlic bulbs stuck together; meanwhile the one at the lab appeared closer to a balloon. It glowed considerably more than it appeared in the distance, maybe it was the fact that it was partially buried under stones, or simply the fact that the blue light seemed to lose against the natural sunlight.

The blue flame had an almost liquid quality to it as it waved slowly. It was nearly hypnotic as he moved closer. In his opinion, he had done it fast enough that he could spend a bit observing it.

Closer inspection showed that it was cold and seemed to ignore wind. He didn't dare to touch it with his bare hand, maybe once he had gone through all the information and documentation he would see about experimenting with it.

Though before he could reach it with the torch, the sound of something moving quickly in his direction stopped him. He quickly moved away from the furnace and hid up one of the trees, waiting to see what it was.

It didn't make itself wait and Magnus felt his mouth twisting when he saw it was an old Guardian, impressively it was one of the models that could still move around; though this model seemed to have suffered damage and never recovered. It was moving slowly as it's missing one of its six legs and two of the others seemed to be having troubles moving too far, there were also multiple pockmarks all over its surface and the turret seemed to be having troubles turning three sixty.

It stopped moving just a few meters away from the furnace. In his opinion, it either knew he was hiding around, it needed the furnace to recharge, or it simply had decided to be as much of a pain in the ass to him as it could.

Unfortunately, it didn't matter which it was, after a few minutes it became obvious it wasn't leaving and most likely would try to follow him. On slightly better news, he had read the introduction on Guardians Robbie had written, and while the laser cannon they had was dangerous, it was more or less the only weapon this model had.

This opened a chance of dealing with it safely, and it was as easy as immobilizing it by cutting off its legs and attacking it from the angle it couldn't look at. As many would say, easy-peasy.

Graceful would be his best choice to deal with its legs, though he was feeling a bit frustrated for not having picked the Cobble Crusher as the large, heavy blade would have been excellent to decimate its legs. The only other weapon he trusted to be effective would be the Royal Broadsword as he feared the Eightfold Blade would crack before it managed to properly damage the machine.

Magnus took a deep breath and prepared himself before jumping at the Guardian. His mace swung down and utilized all of his weight plus the speed from his fall to hit the closest of the machine's damaged legs. The section broke off nearly instantly, it caused the machine to let out something that sounded like an angry electric warble as its light coloration turned red and started to turn its head to find him.

Luckily it tried to turn in the direction of its dead spot and simply bounced against it a few times before finally changing the rotation direction, by then Magnus had swung his mace at another leg, this one having been intact didn't break and he was forced to blink away to hide from the machine's attention.

Whatever passed as an intelligence in the robot was very basic, because after failing to find him it seemed to soon calm down and power down its laser. Using another Light Step to relocate as close as possible to another of its legs turned out to be a bit more dangerous than expected. Because it seemed to be able to see the flash created by the ability, forcing Magnus to rush his next attack.

This time it didn't catch the robot completely unaware, and even if he managed to break the targeted leg, the turret turned to face him much quicker than he expected. Quick thinking saved him by jumping towards the dead spot in its turning and causing it to get stuck during shooting.

The beeping sound of the targeting laser stopped, and was quickly replaced by the loud explosion as the laser hit the spot he had been just a moment ago. Hot air blowing away a large cloud of dust and wood chips as one of the nearby trees was reduced to burning bits. There was little time to think about it as even with just three intact legs and a broken one, it was quickly moving to aim at him again.

He rushed at the broken leg to finish it before moving to deal with the intact ones. Thankfully the reduced number of limbs had caused the machine to have problems for both moving and aiming down, this created a safe zone around the Guardian's body; one he quickly abused.

Once he was safe from its main and only weapon, it was easy to deal with the machine's limbs, leaving it incapacitated. It also caused the machine to panic, or at least try and recover mobility, it was almost sad.

"System, any way we can turn it off?" He questioned.

"Unfortunately System lacks the necessary information and the communication protocols to enact take-over of the magitech unit."

Magnus grumbled a bit, it would have been nice to finish it and recover some useful materials from it. He would have to finish with the documentation, the researchers had a pile of scrapped Guardians, it was obvious they knew how to turn them off to dismantle them.

Though there was a way to hopefully turn it off. He retrieved the broadsword from his inventory and jammed it in the indent between the body and the turret's head. Once he had it deep enough to get the turret locked in place he started hammering it with his mace, only stopping to push the sword deeper before finally forcing down hard enough.

A loud whine and the sound of bending metal filled the clearing before the cannon popped off and the whole machine warbled before the lights went offline.

Unfortunately his inventory was too small to store all the parts he had broken off, even less the whole thing. He also didn't feel like moving Guardian's now turret-less body without a cart. He did pick a few small things that had fallen off, screws, springs, three of the legs, the rest would have to be retrieved in the future once his inventory was large enough. Or maybe accompanied by Robbie and Jerrin to scrap the good bits out.

He turned back to the Ancient Furnace, he still had a job to do. He grabbed the torch out of his inventory and lit it up before starting his way back.

Carrying the torch back made it impossible for Magnus to Light Step, this made his return take a bit longer than expected as he had to properly go down all the way down to the bottom of the hill before climbing the other one.

Thankfully the torch was fueling the Blue Flame going without a problem, he even stopped to light a few of the stone lanterns that dotted the area. Made him wonder if they were meant to be connected to the furnace through some system acting as relays. He would have to ask Robbie, it may be possible to fix that and have a constant and steady supply of Blue Flame instead of wondering when it would go out.

Though he also wondered if he could utilize said flame for forging weapons, it certainly was used in some way by Cherry to produce things.

He finally arrived at the lab and lit the Ancient Furnace that rested outside of the building. The familiar blue glow spread quickly. A quick flick of the torch extinguished the flame that had been burning on it before he entered the lab.

"I'm back." He announced, though he expected them to already know since the Ancient Oven would have turned back on.

Before he could even react, two strong arms wrapped around him and lifted him off the ground. "Magnus!" A voice boomed by his head and practically stunned him momentarily.

"Inside voice, Prince Sidon." Jerrin chided and Magnus was put down.

He looked up. "Sidon, what brings you here?"

The Zora gave him a confused look. "I came looking for you, there was no news of you for days when we had expected you to arrive only a few days after your departure from Death Mountain." Sidon explained.

Magnus couldn't help but wince a bit. "I…"

"Just apologize and go from there." Robbie said from his spot by Cherry, the man had apparently waited not a second longer to run maintenance on the Ancient Oven.

He nodded. "I'm sorry for worrying you, I can't imagine what you've been doing to look for me. I think I got into old habits, I've been remembering things, and one of them is that me and my many siblings are usually connected." He explained. "We tend to be a question away to know what the others are doing, so if no question comes, we just…" he shrugged, "we just assume things are all okay."

"Oh- wait, you've been remembering things? That's wonderful news." Sidon laughed as his mood did a quick turn.

Magnus chuckled awkwardly. "Mostly about my siblings, and even then I don't remember all of them, though given how many siblings I actually have…" He added the last part mostly to himself.

"You'll have to tell me more, though most likely another day, me being here wasn't exactly a programmed thing." He admitted rubbing his cheek.

Magnus couldn't help but feel guilty about it. "I apologize for having taken you away from your duties."

"It's okay, Magnus." The prince's hand felt heavy on his shoulder, but it was also quite reassuring that he was being honest. "It's true that you never promised you would come straight away to the Zora Domain, though I expect you write sometimes, especially to keep us apprised of when you will be finally coming."

He nodded and assured the Zora he would be talking with the people in the stable down the hill to see about doing so.

Sidon thanked Jerrin and Robbie for their hospitality, though Magnus was pretty sure the old Sheikah had stopped paying much attention to the events going around him. After that the prince headed out with his well wishes.

Jerrin chuckled. "When I first met you all I saw was a young kid, one who quickly surprised me by having a very varied experience in life to the point I forgot your young age. But this shows you still have plenty to grow into." There was warmth in her words.

"I think that even now, months after getting here, I still haven't realized how many friends I made." He admitted. "I will have to write to the Gorons on Death Mountain and the people in Kakariko Village too." He added after a little thought.

"That would be the mature thing to do." She agreed with a small, motherly giggle before she headed to join Robbie.

Magnus took to his usual chair and grabbed the next book he had on the list to archive, he would write to his friends and acquaintances, but after he was done with his work for the day. Though it felt like he was forgetting something.

Magnus wrote two sets of letters that night. The first would go to Death Mountain, it would be the shortest as it would be mainly apologizing to them for having worried them in his actions. The one that would go to Kakariko Village would be much longer in comparison.

To Lady Impa he wrote more generally, about what happened and also to apologize for worrying her. To Paya he wrote a bit about what he remembered about his family along with some funny anecdotes. To Tasmon he wrote his findings in refining medicines along with his best explanation of how to reproduce his findings. And to Dorian he wrote about his experience fighting, though he left out how much he was enjoying getting into tussles with monsters.

The next day he only waited long enough to make sure he wouldn't be waking people up before he headed down the hill once the few chores around the lab had been completed. Thankfully it didn't take too long to learn all he needed and set up the two letters to be delivered with just a modest fee.

After that he quickly fell back into a comfortable routine and quickly working through the insane amount of notes and other studies the lab had done in the many decades it had existed.

There was more than just notes about the Blue Flame, Robbie had studied a lot of things along his life, and Magnus was more than happy to learn about everything. There were extensive notes about different places in Hyrule where ancient Sheikah ruins and artifacts had been found over the years.

He saw to add them to the list of possible places to visit even if the records were quite old as Robbie hadn't been in the field for decades. He didn't expect to find anything new in any of them, but there was a pretty strong and normal desire to find something new in them. Maybe he would luck out in a hidden chamber.

And so his routine continued till the night of the full moon. That day went through without much problem, even when the sun set the night appeared to be normal.

The first sign was how the temperature lowered more and more, none considered it too strange since Winter had ended just a month before and a cold front wasn't out of the question.

The second sign was how quickly the clear sky became cloudy. Thick, roiling clouds that made the night sky look purple. By then Magnus could feel something was stirring.

It was when the red moon rose that things became worse.

It wasn't unusual to see banks of Malice float across the land like fog during Blood Moons. But on this night things became worse, everyone could feel the evil presence as the monsters on Hyrule stirred up once more.

Everyone had quickly looked for shelter as the thick Malice in the air seemed to try and snuff all lights and sap all heat.

For Magnus it felt like he was drowning in dry land, his body practically refusing to breathe in the Malice-tainted air as his two stars tried to burn it all away. Light circulated inside of his body as Darkness oozed from his skin to create a safe area around him.

Robbie and Jerrin had been quite surprised when they found him buried under a thick cloud of darkness. But the combination of full moon and Blood Moon seemed to have turned the night worse as the red disc was visible even through the darkest clouds.

A common misconception about Blood Moons was that many believed Malice turned the satellite red, but that wasn't exactly true. What happened was that during these nights the Malice in the air grew to such thickness in the skies of Hyrule that it reacted to the image of the moon and superimposed a dyed image of it, visible even through the clouds as the Malice was below them.

And for a few minutes that night, the sky had a red, wrathful eye watching down.

A few hundred meters away from the laboratory rested the Ancient Furnace, its blue flame flickering weakly under the weight of Malice in the air, and a few meters away laid the broken remains of a Guardian.

When the Calamity had escaped its seal one of its first acts had been to take over the system overseeing the Guardians and Divine Beasts. While the latter had taken longer given the Champions fighting, and unfortunately losing, to keep them away from its control, the Guardians had fallen practically in the first minute.

While the Calamity had turned them against the inhabitants of Hyrule, it had never truly done anything special with them.

This night was the first time in a long time the sleeping Calamity stirred, many would consider it a sign of bad things to come, of Zelda's seal starting to weaken, of the monster finally working to free itself. Or maybe it was simply the sleeping giant moving in its sleep.

It didn't matter, with so much Malice in the air the twisted energies looked for a vessel, one they found on this broken Guardian. While the machine couldn't feel anger, hate or any sort of emotions, it had felt frustrated for failing, for being incapable of completing its duty to destroy its enemy.

There was something in the basic will of the magical machine that had developed into a sort-of need for revenge after having been defeated by exploiting its faults.

Malice was more than eager to 'help', so much magical energy around the air tended to lead to weird events. And in this case, it all was quickly siphoned into the machine.

Liquid Malice seemed to pour from its broken chassis, congealing in a twisted sort of armor. Since it was missing its original, slick legs, it sprouted new limbs. These were twisted and monstrous, maws and eyes decorated them, and at the tips ended in wicked hands, a single eye opening in each palm.

It tentatively moved in the direction of its head, viscous tentacles of Malice reached for it and dragged it back in place. A mane of a substance that looked like blood-drenched air grew to cover everything but the main eye. It looked around before skittering it away.

Only the Blue Flame and the Blood Moon high above witnesses of the abomination that had been just born.

Jerrin handed him a mug full of hot tea. "Feeling better?"

He looked at his hands, some Darkness still lingered in the tip of his fingers, it made them look as if he had been playing with ink. "It was… bad tonight."

"It happened before?" She asked.

"Last Blood Moon during winter, it felt like I was being watched, can't tell you if it was Death Mountain taking the brunt of it or tonight was especially bad. But it was like I couldn't breathe, the air was thick and impossible to go down my throat."

"Today was especially bad, kid." Robbie pointed out. "The worst it has gotten in a long time." He added.

"You mean…" Jerrin looked at him.

The old man sighed. "I don't want to be a pessimist, but I fear Zelda's seal may be starting to weaken, it's already impressive she held it for nearly a century."

"Let's hope he wakes up before then." Jerrin said, though mostly to herself.

"...excuse me, but I take it you're not talking about Malice." Magnus prompted.

The two older researchers exchanged a look before Robbie spoke.

"You know about the Champions, right?" Magnus nodded to his question. "Daruk, Mipha, Urbosa and Revali died in their respective Divine Beasts when the Calamity corrupted their systems, meanwhile Zelda sacrificed herself to seal the Calamity with her in the castle, then there was Link…"

"He was the wielder of the Master Sword, no?" He asked gently. "From what Sidon told me, he passed away protecting the princess near the end of the battle."

"Yes." He said. "But that wasn't the end…" the man lifted his goggles for a moment to rub the bridge of his nose. "One of the Sheikah sites we found was located in the Great Plateau, it was built upon a very particular spring. We named it the Shrine of Resurrection."

He let the man continue.

"Link was, for all intents and purposes, dead when Purah and I placed him in the Shrine. The Great Plateau's particular in the fact that it's quite difficult to get onto given its elevated edges." Robbie explained. "Though something else happened, we don't know why, but there's a constant cloud wall around it now, not even the Rito can fly into it, so we have not been able to check on the process' progress."

"How would we know if he wakes up?" Magnus asked.

"That's actually the easy part." Jerrin spoke up. "To leave the Shrine Link will have to take the Sheikah Slate we left there for him, that will initiate a process that will activate the Sheikah Towers."

The old Hylian woman moved to the map on the wall and tapped a few spots.

"I'm sad to say we don't fully understand the purposes of the system besides being a network meant to coordinate something." She exposited.

"Purah's main theory was that they were built to coordinate a war against the Calamity, acting as a sort of control for Guardians. People would be standing up the tower and utilize their Slates to control the armies from a vantage point." Robbie explained. "We also know they provided a sort-of transportation system, but we only found some references to it, and without actually activating the tower, they are all buried and offline."

Internally Magnus found it a bit funny that they were as buried as the pieces of his ship.

"There are also the shrines, but we have never been able to enter any of them. All of the information we found points to them being some sort of trial for the hero. But even back then Link never managed to activate them." Robbie said and shrugged.

"Don't even think of trying to get into the Great Plateau." Jerrin quickly shot Magnus.

"I wasn't thinking that." He answered, maybe a bit too weakly.

She rolled her eyes. "If I didn't know my son wasn't interested in fighting monsters I wouldn't have let him travel, but you're not like him, you sure like to fight, no?" She chided.

"… maybe a bit." He chuckled.

The woman sighed as Robbie laughed on the side.

Magnus smiled as he drank his tea, it had gone a bit cold, nothing a small bit of prestidigitation couldn't fix. The experience from the night had been bad and nothing assured him it would be the last like this, especially if the seal was weakening. He would need to find a way to deal with the pressure or get used to it.

He finished his tea and leaned back, he would need to start using his time to advance, there had been enough knowledge on chemistry and similar sciences in the notes that he could most likely acquire the perk in a week or two, hopefully.

After that he would just keep on studying, learning, acquiring perks and improving himself. And if Link was coming back, the hero would need help most likely.

Chapter 19

Venturing the Wild – 19

His calculations were quite on point and just only a bit after a week Magnus had acquired a chemistry perk. And all it had taken him were a few basic highschool-level chemistry experiments.

It was very weird, the perk had given him a ton of theoretical knowledge, a lot of things he also now knew he already knew before. It was like a good chunk of his knowledge had returned, along with some interests because the perk had given him some extra knowledge, though given the amount of radioactive materials they used in its production, he may never produce any of them.

A quick, injectable heal was pretty nice, but it either had a high chance to cause cancer and genetic damage, or it was actually creating cancer to heal the person. He wasn't sure and didn't have enough biology knowledge to say. It just felt very silly to try and produce them when he could produce alchemical concoctions that would do the same.

On the great side, he now knew exactly how to produce borosilicate glass, and all he would need would be borax and sulfuric acid. He was pretty sure sulfur wouldn't be too hard to acquire in Death Mountain, he would most likely have to start his search around the hot springs. If he was lucky he would find Borax near the North side of said mountain's base. Otherwise he may have to look in the surrounding areas of the Gerudo Desert, thankfully it should be pretty common in the latter if he didn't find it in the former. There could also be some over in the Hebra region, but the cold mountains were a bit less likely.

Though that would have to wait as Magnus took a week more after that to finish transcribing everything in the lab and three more days after that to make sure everything was properly organized and double checked, this wasn't as long as he had feared thanks to the work the System had been assisting during the process..

"There's something so… fulfilling about seeing all of our work so neat and organized." Jerrin thought out loud. "Though it would be nice to have a way to access and add to it without you, Magnus, no offense."

"None taken, I understand what you mean, unless we find a way to properly store it here I will effectively be taking it with me when I leave to continue my studies." He said. "Could it be possible to use Cherry to produce a very basic version of the Sheikah Slate?"

"Could Cherry produce it? Yes," the man answered, "but I don't have the necessary blueprints for the parts."

"Could we produce the books instead then?" He asked next. "It would be an expenditure of resources, but it would be nice to know we can quickly produce books, it would make it easy to spread knowledge in the future."

"That… hmm…" Robbie hummed thoughtfully. "It could certainly work, though I imagine we would need a specially designed Ancient Oven to deal with printing more than a few pages at the same time, otherwise it would be quite slow."

Magnus nodded, thinking about how he would go at it from what he understood of the Ancient Oven's working. He brought up one of the diagrams he had digitalized and through the miracle of design software unfolded the blueprint into a 3D model.

Robbie stopped what he was doing and moved closer to look at the ghostly image of the machine. After a moment he pointed to a few spots.

"We modified these points two years ago," he corrected, "it looks like we didn't update the blueprints with the changes. The couplings were replaced by three-way ones and this one became a grounding."

Magnus nodded and quickly modified it. As he was doing it, something caught his eye and brought an idea.

"A question," he called Robbie, "this part here is what is in charge of recycling the materials fed to the oven, right?"

The old Sheikah nodded. "That's correct."

"And if I understood right you use materials like ancient screws and other similar components because they tend to have a pretty strict percentage in their components."

"Yes, it eases the process by not having to run checks and make sure it has every material the finished product needs."

"Could it be possible to make a version of the Ancient Oven that just runs the recycling process? I don't want to devalue the work carried by the Goron, but you can't wander around Hyrule and not stumble over a few rusted weapons." He explained. "It's so much material that it's just… laying there." He added as he thought about the pile of scrapped guardians outside of the lab.

The old man looked at it for a moment thinking about it. "It could certainly be useful, though we would need a way to properly deal with…" He soon grew silent and then moved to grab paper and started to make notes.

"Would you prefer to use the System?" He offered, and the man thought about it.

"Maybe later, I think better when using a pen." He answered and Magnus nodded.

It wasn't the first time he had heard about it. He left the old man to work on his project as he opened one of his own, after all recycling materials was only the first part of his idea, it was the second the one he was really looking to improve.

A body resembling that of an ant, four legs like those of the Guardian Stalker, two more limbs to act as hands for dexterous harvest of materials. The head would take care of 'eating' the materials and processing them, the next segment would act as a forge to heat the materials, finally the tail would be solid to act as an anvil.

When Jerrin called them for lunch, he saved the project as Forge Ant Worker. He doubted the design would remain the same, but he liked the looks, so he could work in maintaining the line of aesthetics.

He would need to see how to power, but that could wait for the moment.

Having practically read and organized everything in the lab had been a lot of work, but in the end it was practically just a primer. There was a lot that only could be understood with a teacher explaining it to you, things that needed practical examples, and some others that needed hands-on experience.

Learning the programming side of Ancient Tech with Jerrin was making quick work towards what appeared to be a programming perk. It was quite interesting as the Sheikah Tech was an analogue system that utilized a complex set of runes and drawings. All the glowing lines and circles on the tech? All part of the magical programming that had gone into their production and very much necessary at some level.

Unfortunately, Jerrin's knowledge of it only covered the basics of the field, enough to provide for the Ancient Oven and Furnaces, but not enough to really produce very complex things. For that he would have to get to Purah.

Fortunately, given that his personal project would cover things that the Ancient Oven already did, it wasn't too much of a stretch to modify its current functions to suite his needs.

On the other hand, his work with Robbie was having mixed results, though that may be because he was handling two projects with the old man.

The one doing worse was the study of the water bottle, most of what it did happen outside of reality in its expanded internal space. This made its study very complicated. This wasn't stopping the Sheikah researcher and instead was using the water bottle to fill in what he missed in a similar type of technology provided he had seen in Sheikah artifacts.

The Recycling Oven was going so much better in comparison, to the fact that they were printing a few of the pieces they knew it would be using already. They may even have a prototype running in ten or so days.

In comparison, his project had both advanced and gotten stuck. He was pretty sure he could get it working if they got the prototype working, the real problem was a source of energy. The problem came from the Blue Flame.

On one hand, he could technically utilize the same method the Ancient Oven, Guardians and other tech ran with. But that opened up many problems, main of all was that he didn't understand the Blue Flame enough.

The best way he could describe the source of energy was actually natural energy stripped of its nature and added something else. Or that was the best explanation Robbie had found over the years. It was that mysterious middle step that was the problem.

Towards this objective, he was following his old theory of an underground energy pathway. Interestingly, it seemed to be proving true.

"Ha! I was right." Magnus couldn't help to celebrate a bit as he put the shovel aside and checked the just uncovered construction.

"Hmm," Robbie fiddled with his goggles, "it looks like you were right. You know, in hindsight it's pretty obvious."

He nodded and looked at the node-like object at the bottom of the stone lantern he had been digging around. Thankfully this one was installed to the North of the Lab and went nowhere, now.

"How did you come to the idea that it was possible?" Jerrin asked as she sketched the object as Magnus further dug it freely.

"Back home there's a magical concept called Ley Lines, though they are also called Dragon Lines in some cultures. They are usually believed to carry the world's power around and usually important things are built above spots where multiple ones converge." He explained. "I remember you talked about the towers setting up a network. Main nodes for the network would be the towers, but there would also be subnodes, most likely only acting as connection points."

He carefully heaved the node out of the hole, not as much because of the weight, but because the hole gave him a very uneasy ground to stand on. He carefully cleaned the node and was caught by how much like a dumbbell the lantern node was shaped, on one end the familiar stone lantern, on the other a very Sheikah-like sphere.

Robbie looked at it closer, running his finger to wipe some of the mud off the power lines.

"This is not just sending the Blue Flame around." He finally stated. "See this part here, it's setting a sort-of direction to where the energy goes, but it doesn't just spread the energy, it also sends something back."

"You think the lanterns also collected the natural energy and sent it back to the furnace?" Jerrin guessed.

"It would make sense," Magnus offered, "if you imagine these lanterns would be spread out you could have them easily absorb a minimum amount of ambient energy and send it back to the Furnace."

Robbie nodded. "That's most likely what they did, the Ancient Furnace's working, but it's obvious it's only barely creating enough energy to keep going and power the lab."

"Do you think the problem is in the Ancient Furnace or the lanterns around it?" Magnus prompted.

"I think what we can do is take this back to the lab and study it well, depending on if it works or not, we can extrapolate on the furnace situation." He answered.

The young man nodded and finished cleaning the object before drawing his inventory up and sliding it in carefully to take back.

"What is that?!" Jerrin asked in a hard tone as Magnus carefully retrieved the object from the inventory, revealing the few Guardian pieces floating in the space.

"Oh, I had forgotten I had put those there, back when I went to retrieve the Blue Flame a severely damaged Guardian approached the area before I grabbed it." He answered. "I had to take it out, I abused the fact it couldn't turn its main cannon around properly and attacked from its blind spot."

The woman sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose "And of course you forgot as Sidon practically jumped you when you came back, and with the Blood Moon it's most likely no longer there."

He shrugged. "I can check next time I go there." He said as he helped Robbie use a set of pulleys to carefully lift up the artifact. The old woman soon joined them in their study.

Having something new to study after so long quickly took over the interest of the three researchers, to the point that they may have skipped dinner without realizing it. Though they did have a midnight snack before the two locals passed out for the night.

Magnus also saw to take advantage of waking up earlier to prepare a hearty breakfast because he didn't believe they would remember to eat lunch at the rate they were going. And he wasn't wrong.

The most amazing thing came during the afternoon.

"If this connects to this…" Robbie mumbled as he followed one of the circuits they had revealed after opening the lantern up.

"Then it proves the theory correct, the lanterns indeed acted as relays in the network for the Blue Flame." Jerrin finished happily.

"Then the Blue Flame really is natural energy stripped of meaning and given a new one." Magnus added and theorized. "That means you could technically create Blue Flame from any source of energy, it's just that esoteric energy sources work better to carry the information provided to create Blue Flames."

He felt it as the knowledge acted as the key, opening the last lock on a door and allowing him to make contact with a new Perk. Their theories were correct, to create Blue Flames the furnace effectively stripped an energy source of what made it unique, for a way of saying.

For example the energy coming from a ruby would have its heat and burning stripped away and turned into the Blue Flame that did two things, carry information and power the Sheikah magitech.

The Ancient Furnace used the natural energy in the ambient because in Hyrule it was excessively available. But he could see how he could technically produce it in himself.

"Magnus, are you okay? You've been looking off for a moment here." Jerrin asked.

"Yes, it's just that…" He mulled on the thought before projecting a large blackboard with the System and starting to draw the technical aspect of the energy conversion he had just learned about.

He spent a few minutes putting his new knowledge in order and writing it down was very effective for this. The two most important points were the stripping and bestowal steps. And the most curious was the point between them, when energy was, for all effects and purposes, neutral and untouched.

It made him wonder how advanced the Sheikah had been to not only design this, but also to add it to their bodies.

Once he finished writing down, and with the security that the System had it all saved, he turned to look at the two researchers. They weren't exactly paying much attention, but that wasn't entirely correct to say, the two of them seemed to have fully understood what he had written and were animatedly discussing its meaning.

"This will change so many things." The woman murmured as she wrote down her ideas excitedly.

"We'll have to modify the furnace outside of the lab, thankfully it should be pretty easy to add a module to carry out the transformative process." Robbie said.

He could only watch and chuckle as both were having a conversation, but at the same they were just stating their thoughts out loud.

He decided to leave them to their own work as he turned his attention to the blackboard, he was pretty sure he could run it inside of himself. Though it would obviously need some experimentation.

The following week would be remembered as the start of a revolution in the understanding of Sheikah Technology. The three of them worked both together and apart, but the truth was that at the end all of their projects converged into one important advancement, the energy conversion system.

The EC System was actually an improvement over what the Sheikah did for two things. First it made sure the energy couldn't be taken over and corrupted, this way it would prevent the tech from being overtaken by Calamity Ganon's Malice. The second was that the resulting energy was technically customizable, at the moment it only could produce Blue Flame. But Magnus could see how it would be very useful in the future, especially as the process still had plenty of room to improve its efficiency.

The protection could still be overwhelmed, but if it was properly installed in the network, it would slow down any kind of spread to the point it could be curtailed by cutting off the section.

But it was enough for Magnus to put together a prototype of the Forge Worker Ant, it was mainly constructed with the recycled materials produced by Robbie's addition to Cherry.

The new addition to the lab certainly looked like an oven, it was square and you fed it the materials, it 'cooked' them and then produced the reclaimed materials. The main problem was its size limitation, it wouldn't be recycling more than one or two dozen kilos of materials and even then it couldn't be in large chunks or they just wouldn't fit. It still had gone through a good amount of the scrapped guardian shells that had rested outside of the lab.

Jerrin's work, in comparison, was nearly invisible as the woman had focused mostly on the programming side of the projects. She had been essential in modularizing the EC system. It was just in comparison to a new addition to the lab and the Worker unit, it really didn't stand out.

Still, Magnus couldn't deny he was having fun with his new toy.

He had managed to save up a lot of production time by utilizing the Guardian legs he had retrieved from the unit he had defeated. Even better, they had been long enough he could utilize a portion of each of the four legs to give it the two arms he had planned. Though he had to design them from the ground up, and forge a proper blade for cutting of the harvested materials.

Originally he had wanted the ant to be able to chew through material, but it turned out to be too much work and a cutting tool at the end of one of its arms was more than enough to do the same work. Though Robbie had offered one of the Sheikah energy blade-saw, the problem of it would be the energy drain presented by said weapon when added to the recycler and the forge modules.

"Seeing it at work reminds me of some projects I never finished." Robbie says and chuckles. "Back when we were fighting the Calamity I had planned to equip weapons on my tools backpack."

"And those will stay as ideas." Jerrin pointedly stated. "Still, it would be useful to have something like this to help during the reconstruction of Hyrule."

Magnus nodded. "Can always make sure you need a driver for them to work, right now this unit's incapable of working by itself as the System's running all the movements." He said and sent an order for the machine to stop dismantling the corpse of a Guardian and focus on the material it had already put aside.

"That could certainly work." Robbie said thoughtfully. "It would also keep people from fearing them if they can't do anything by themselves."

Magnus nodded, mostly thinking of magitech power tools and construction equipment. He also reached down and placed his hand on the anvil/thorax of the unit and poured some energy into the EC system. It was very useful to have the System run all proper check ups to make sure nothing went wrong.

With the tank topped, the unit accelerated its production process.

"You have plans for other models, right?" While presented as a question, Robbie was more of stating a fact.

"Yes," Magnus answered and summoned sketches of other ideas, "honestly this unit's half a prototype and half a working station for myself. I'm planning on workers without the forge and anvil modules, mainly just collecting, recycling and carrying materials. The actual production will be carried by princess units and all will be coordinated by a queen unit that will also produce the other units."

"You're taking a lot of inspiration from nature." Jerrin pointed out.

"Actually, I'm taking inspiration from my sister." He said and he laughed.

The older woman simply raised an eyebrow and gestured to him to continue, he laughed a bit again at her reaction and proceeded to explain.

"My sister focuses on controlling insects, but controlling every one of them individually would be too hard. So she delegates. It's more effective to have the work spread to those most capable."

And depending on what he needs, a queen and princess could set up the production of soldier, scout and construction units. It would certainly make it much easier to build himself a place once he decided for a spot.

"I think it's time I start thinking about moving on." He announced the other thing he had been having in mind.

Robbie nodded knowingly. "I wondered when it would happen, I take the production of your prototype made you make up your mind?" He asked.

"Yes, honestly if it hadn't been Winter I doubt I would have stayed as long as I did in Death Mountain. I need to go out and see the world." He replied honestly.

"You will be heading towards the Zora Domain now, no?" Robbie asked as he rubbed his chin. "Then after that you should go visit Purah at Hateno Village." He stated, followed by the familiar chord.

"That's the plan. I've to admit I thought about heading directly to Hateno Village, but…" He chuckled. "Well, I'm worried I may end up staying there two months or so instead of dropping the stuff and heading to Zora's Domain. It will be much more sure I head to the domain first and then head further South, at most I will stop a few days in Kakariko Village."

"Have you written to the prince yet?" Jerrin asked, in a very motherly tone.

"I've been writing to him, yes, but I've not written yet because I more or less decided today and I would like to run a few tests on this unit." He defended himself. "So I imagine four or five days before I go."

"Then we will make sure it's working perfectly before you go." Robbie stated and his wife nodded.

Magnus laughed softly and thanked them, it would be a few tough days. But there was also a pride of having helped change things around for the better. He should see about collecting some ideas to send the Goron, he was pretty sure they could get some use out of his knowledge of chemistry. Though he could also wait and see if he could get some interesting alloys.

But for now he collected all the cooled down ingots from the unit and ordered it to turn off its modules so he could walk it into the lab without fear it would set something on fire. There was plenty to check on the prototype.

Horizon Zero Dawn perk incoming.

Chapter 20

Venturing the Wild – 20

The next few days in the lab were spent refining the prototype into something more reliable. Not only were there many faults in the design that came apparent when actually running the unit, but ideas sometimes only come when you're actually using the prototype and see it working.

One of the most visible changes was actually the one that changed things the least. With his knowledge of chemistry, Magnus had had an easy time producing a copper alloy that gave the unit's body a nice and rich green coloration. In addition to that, he had used some of the gold jewelry he had acquired so long ago to create a resistance coat for the trimming.

The purpose of all of this was simply to create a distinctive palette of colors compared to the usual Sheikah technology. In the place of brown, beige and blue lights, the Forge Ant Worker was bright green and gold; Magnus may even paint some flame designs on it in the future.

That wasn't the only change, but the others could fill quite a big list of technicalities that weren't as interesting as the green and gold body of the unit.

"I've to admit it's almost cute." Jerrin said with a small laugh.

"People may still recognize the arms and legs, or possibly think it's a monster. But I doubt anyone will see it and think it's a Guardian." Robbie observed.

"It's also big enough that if we had managed to properly program it to run I would just ride it like a horse." Magnus stated and laughed. "Or at least I would if it wasn't just as easy for me to walk. I may use it to pull a similar cart if the need comes up."

"By my calculations it should be able to pull a full cart of common size, you can trust me on that." Robbie started proudly and his backpack played the accompaniment chord.

The man chuckled at his wife's reaction before he walked up to Magnus and handed him a letter. "I will write to Purah, hopefully that old hag reads her mail so she knows you're going. But just in case, take this with you and hand it to her if she doesn't want to meet you; consider it a bit of a blackmail threat." The old man giggling wasn't something he liked to hear anytime soon again.

Both his wife and he rolled their eyes at the Sheikah's antics.

"Stay safe, Magnus, and if you see our son, tell him to come around to visit." Jerrin gave him a very motherly hug while Robbie simply nodded.

Magnus thanked them both as the unit walked into his inventory and went to sleep as he started his trek down the hill, only stopping at the stable to exchange some words with the people there.

While he didn't visit often, over the weeks he had come to know the names of practically everyone who lived in the area. Between them was Aya, the young Hylian woman he had met the day he arrived with Robbie. It felt a little strange to learn she, who was a bit younger than him, was getting married soon. In a way it made sense, she was an adult, maybe the reason because it was the first time he had come across the idea of it.

Anyways, the thought didn't linger for long, though he did make a note to send her a nice gift once she got married, along with a note to keep an eye on Robbie. The old man was already a handful for his wife and the young woman did see him as a sort of grandfather.

After saying his goodbyes, he headed towards the West route as it was slightly more direct than the South path. His way down was quite peaceful, and not even the sudden Spring rain that decided to darken his noon was much of a problem. The only truly interesting thing that happened in the first few hours since his departure happened a bit before he reached the quarry that laid before the Shadow Pass.

It wasn't a sudden thing, at first he had been pretty sure the heat he was feeling was the wind coming down from Death Mountain. But it just kept growing stronger till it felt like he was scaling. It was only thanks to the System confirming the temperature wasn't rising that he realized he was feeling something else.

He felt for a moment compelled to strike it off the path, wander West and see what was the source. Would it feel hotter? Would it stop? Was he being actively lured into something?

But at the end he decided not to take another distraction, even more because from what Robbie had explained of the area, the quarry had flying Guardians and that sounded like just the most infuriating thing to try to deal with. Though he made a note of the area to explore in the future, maybe once he saw about making himself some armor, with the Forge Ant he could start experimenting.

He kept on walking, thankfully the rain stopped by the afternoon when he reached the start of the Shadow Pass. The forest was heavily populated by the same maples the rest of the region was known for. The whole pass was practically a valley with a sinuous road, it was also much more used compared to the East path.

Given how water pulled along the road, Magnus saw himself having to slow down his walk as even the packed ground had grown muddy. But in exchange he got to enjoy a picturesque forest walk, plus with the rain having ended moments prior, he may get lucky and get some good and fresh ingredients.

His walk through the forest was accompanied by the sound of water drops falling from the trees and hitting the small puddles on the floor. Though that changed an hour or so in his walk.

The sound of fighting reached his ears, the quick splashing noises of people moving around in muddy ground, that of metal hitting metal and soft grunts. It made Magnus quickly rush over, even if there was a fifty fifty chance he wasn't needed, he would lend a hand afterwards.

Given the muddy ground, he was forced to take up the trees. Even as wet as the wood was, it was easier to have his feet sink into the mud; though it felt a bit silly of him for some reason.

He arrived in time to see a young Hylian woman, most likely a year or two younger than him, fighting a Blue Bokoblin. The situation wasn't clear at first, the mud on her clothes and the monster's body showed they must have slipped down during their fight, and while the girl was doing better her weapon seemed to give up at the worst moment.

The Boko's club scored what could be called a critical hit and her sword broke, with half flying over her head. Magnus didn't lose a moment after seeing that, glad to have taken his sword out of his inventory before.

Said blade had no problem dispatching the monster, not just because of its quality, but also showing how much damage the girl had done. Magnus turned to her and offered his hand.

"Are you okay?" He asked.

"I… I'm not." Whatever fire her words had was doused instantly when she winced as he pulled her up.

He retrieved one of the small potions he had prepared during his stay at the lab and handed it to her. "It's an extract of Hyrule Herb, good for small injuries and general tiredness." He explained.

She looked at it curiously and popped the cork before giving it a whiff. "Certainly smells the part." She mumbled and downed it.

She quickly handed him the empty container back and watched her own injuries disappear. "Damn, that's the good stuff."

"Get frequently into fights with monsters?" He asked lightly as he reached down to pick up the broken blade.

"And what if I do? Any problem with that?" She shot back defensively.

"Not really, I do too." Magnus admitted. "Would you let me see?" He gestured to her sword. "I'm Magnus by the way."

"Chabi." She answered and handed him the weapon. "And what do you want to see? It's a loss."

He nodded and inspected the weapon, the break was bad, soldering them together would leave it incredibly weakened.

"It is," he nodded, "fixing this will only lead to it breaking soon. But you're in luck, I can reforge it."

"Sure you can, and where do you see a forge out here?" Chabi said and rolled her eyes.

"Right here." He answered cockily and allowed the inventory to open up enough to let the Forge Ant Worker.

She nearly jumped back, reaching for her weapon, which was unfortunately missing and glared at him.

"Don't worry, it's something I built with the help of the Akkala Research Lab." He said, though he was laughing a bit inside. He fed it some power. "As you said, it's rare to find a good forge, so I built one I can take with me. Plus it can recycle old weapons I find around."

"So you're a smart one, eh?" She said teasingly.

"I like to think I'm learning oriented." He answered. "So what brings you to fight monsters?"

"Not going to say anything about my gender?" She glared.

Magnus laughed at that. "Oh goddess no, I've sisters that could wipe the floor with my ass even before I give them a reason."

She looked a bit surprised. "Well, this is the reason." She pulled a small purple bottle from her backpack and handed it to him. "Take it, you did save my life back there. It's Monster Extract, I get it from this weird dude who's fascinated with monsters."

"I don't think I've ever heard of someone like that." Magnus dismantled the sword's handle and started to feed the pieces of the blade to the unit.

"His name's Kilton, he owns a shop as weird as him, it's called the Fang and Bone. It's some kind of hot air balloon, he uses it to fly around Hyrule." She explained. "It makes it a pain to find him." She sighs.

Magnus checked the content of the bottle carefully. It definitely was made from monsters as it gave him a similar feeling to the monster bits he had collected in the past. Though it had definitely been purified off its most noxious parts and should be actually edible.

"Uh, I will have to look into Kilton." He said. "Hmm… I've an idea that should work, it should give you a much better weapon. If it doesn't, I will give you a much better weapon I have made already."

She looked at him carefully before nodding. "Ok, go ahead."

"You won't be disappointed." He told her and quickly retrieved a few bags from his inventory, the powdered metals in them were quickly measured and mixed with the melted remains of the broken blade.

"So care to tell me what you're doing?" She asked.

"First I'm improving the quality of the metal. It's a pretty common iron alloy that most basic weapons use on Hyrule, all I need to add is some extras to prepare it for what will really change things." He explained as he worked.

He picked the resulting ingot with tongs and started to hammer it flat, pouring some of the Monster Extract and started to pour some of his own Darkness and Light to tame and order the essence, respectively. The hammer repeatedly came down, only stopping to get the ingot heated again.

"I didn't know a sword could be made so fast." Chabi said once he finished the work and cooled the resulting blade in a near puddle of clear rain water before giving it a quick sharpening with the whetstone attachment of the cutting arm.

"This baby helps a lot." Magnus said as he patted the Ant. "Since I don't have to worry about heating the forge I can keep working quickly and I'm as strong as any Goron out there." He flexed his arm and grinned.

He finished by boring the bottom of the blade so he could fix the blade back on the handle and made sure it was firmly in place. The resulting weapon wasn't too different from its original shape, though he had reduced its length a bit to make up for Chabi's arm length.

Now the interesting thing was the marbled design on the metal and how it seemed to even glow with a black light when light shone down upon it.

"I think it's a success." He told her and handed it carefully, it was still a weapon. "I'm like ninety percent sure it will be much harder to break and cut better. Though it may also be similarly harder to sharpen so don't sit on that part of maintenance."

"Whoa." She looked at it from close before giving it a few testing swings.

"Little warning," he called out, "it is a magic blade, so it may have some strange effects. But I can't tell you what it'll do without proper testing, so just keep it away from anyone you don't want to hurt or worse, and don't swing it at random."

Chiba shook her head and sheathed the weapon as Magnus ordered the Ant to start the cooling process.

"So what will you do now?" He asked.

"Well… since I gave you my last Monster Extract, I think I will have to hunt Kilton again." She answered as she fixed her scabbard in place. "Thankfully he should be arriving in the area tomorrow, he tends to land by the stone bridge to the island of Akkala lake."

He nodded. "If you go there, then you should head a bit South and visit the Great Fairy, Mija may be able to tell you something about the sword." He suggested.

"You?"

"I'm going to head further South, I'm heading to the Zora Domain."

"Then we will be walking together for a bit." She said knowingly.

He nodded. "At least until the stable." He agreed as he ordered the unit to walk back into the inventory.

"If we're going to walk together, I hope you don't mind if I ask what exactly you are? Because I'm pretty sure you're not a Hylian, and even if you're wearing the part you are definitely not a Sheikah." Curiosity won her over and she asked.

"That is a bit complicated." He laughed and dove into giving her a basic recap of his arrival to Hyrule.

Magnus kept many things to himself, there was no need to share everything. But he admitted to having woken up on the beach without memories of who he was and had simply decided to start walking. He told her about his meeting with Prince Sidon and the Yiga, interestingly she had no experience with the masked bandits and held a very neutral opinion of the group.

He told her he had decided he wanted to learn everything that Hyrule had to give, or at least do his best try at it. That he had learned to fight and medicine making from the Sheikah and then headed to Death Mountain to learn about forging. He admitted that heading to the lab at the North had been an unexpected detour and he had planned to head to the Zora Domain two months prior.

Chabi told him her family had been mostly farmers, a very common occupation in the area South to Hyrule Fields. But it wasn't rare for members of the family to pick up arms and take guard or mercenary jobs.

She admitted that it had started as a game, but soon found she enjoyed dealing with Chuchus and the random red Bokoblin that wandered too close to the farm. She had saved up for a sword, a shield and some basic armor before heading out.

Her first few jobs had been guarding the stable to the East of her family's place, usually learning the blade and shield from older guards and retired mercenaries.

Once she became an adult she had stricken out and that was her story. Of course she had a lot of stories of what she had come across the road, but preferred to save those for talks over alcohol and such.

Night came quickly given their position in a valley, especially one with something like Death Mountain to the West. With still more than a good trek till they got out of the Shadow Pass, the two of them decided to set up camp a bit off the road.

While everything was still quite moist from the earlier rain, Magnus had the Forge Ant Worker heat up and blast the area dry. It wasn't a weapon as it took almost a minute and a half for the thing to even get to that heat, but they now had a nice and toasty clearing to set down.

The heat blast had also nicely dried enough twigs and branches to put up a small fire and cook a hearty dinner. After that they got to spend the night enjoying each other's company, even if Chabi slightly regretted it the next morning.

"Are you sure you're not part horse?" She groaned as she got up. "You certainly have the stamina."

Magnus handed him a healing potion as he apologized. "Some of my siblings are weird, but I don't think there's a horse anywhere there. Though I can't tell until I remember my parents." He laughed softly and awkwardly.

She handed him back the empty glass tube and he put it away. Reviving the fire proved to be too hard, so they had a breakfast of rations before heading out even if the Sun was still too low to shine into the Shadow Pass.

Soon the forest ended and their path started to rise, it became obvious they were reaching their destination as they could see a column of smoke in the distance.

"I wish we had been able to clean up." Chabi commented and sniffed at herself.

"Here," he said and cast a few uses of prestidigitation on her and then on himself, "it's not like taking a proper bath. But it works in a pinch."

"That was weird, it felt like I got all of my skin momentarily pinched." She shuddered as she shook the sensation off.

"Yeah, it's uncomfortable and I try to not use it much, just a small spell I learned a long time ago. Thankfully I remembered it a few months ago." He explained.

"Hmm, I will see to take a bath in the lake then, I still have mud in some of my things." She mused.

"Good luck with that and keep an eye for Octorocks. I will most likely need to wait till I get to the Zora river."

She chuckled. "Oh woe is you, I'm sure you will be okay." She hit him lightly with her elbow.

They parted ways at the stable, Magnus did promise to see about getting word to her if he ended up setting somewhere. She promised to visit, or at least send a letter in the future.

Continuing along made the walk silent and lonely, making Magnus bring up the system to check a few things.

"Congratulations, User has advanced on his Job enough that he can choose an upgrade."

He was surprised for a moment, he had seen the notification earlier, but with company he didn't feel like getting distracted.

"Explain." He requested.

"Job upgrades can happen through multiple methods. First, and the one User has achieved, is progressing on their Job's path. This method will maintain or upgrade the user's abilities along with possibly adding new ones. Second is when the User decides to change into a new Job, as explained previously, the User will lose their current abilities and earn different ones. Progress with those skills will be moderately lost, but they won't be able to advance any further."

He kept part of his attention as the system talked in his ear.

"The third method is when the User's job goes through a mutation due to an external situation. This is very rare and the results are unpredictable."

He chuckled. "Like my incalculable Potential?"

"User's Potential comes from the inside."

He raised an eyebrow and shook his head. "So what's the advancement I get?"

"User can become a Journeyman Forger."

He stopped for a moment before shaking his head and resuming his walk. It felt underwhelming, but it was also true it was progress. Though it surprised him it had been called lesser Forger and not apprentice Forger.

"Anything I can do to change things for the better?"

"User can halt the advancement for as long as they desire, it will only stop them from advancing on their path. Only improvement possible is through life altering experiences or a mutation."

He could certainly wait and see what happened. But he was honestly too curious to not see what he got.

"Go ahead."

"User's become Journeyman Forger. Minor Coordination Improvement has become Minor Dexterity Improvement. Minor Learning Improvement has become Learning Improvement. Minor Magic Improvement has become Magic Improvement. User has recovered Basic Magic Sight. User has recovered Basic Aura. User has gained Basic Crafting Intuition. User has gained Basic Crafting Acceleration. User can now access Perks of higher power."

Magnus stiffened mid-step as the change started deep inside of his soul and spread out. He breathed out small specks of Light and Dark coloring the air before he breathed in and took a bit of Hyrule's natural energy in exchange. A coat of electric blue energy spread over his body before sinking back under his skin.

When he opened his eyes everything looked so much more vibrant than it had a moment before. He could feel things change about himself, even his perks seemed to shift and fit in better than they had a moment before.

There were connections that hadn't been there before, from little things about how Chemistry and Alchemy were related, to larger in the excess of ideas that had filled his mind about possible Sheikah tech models to create. Honestly, the biggest change felt like it was coming from his archival and organization Perk, it seemed to be going through his own memories to efficiently order things.

"Given User's advance and incalculable Potential, User has acquired one of the Perks he was working for. Warning, User's advance and presence was noticed by a higher entity, for more information search Wisdom."

Feeling the engineering knowledge required to work with small machines and maintain giant robots was quickly missed as he felt a chill go down his spine. It was only the complete lack of Evil pointed his way that reassured him that Calamity Ganon hadn't woken up and was looking for him.

Though without a clue of where to start, he would have to look into Hyrule's history a bit more. In a way he had already been noticed by the Great Fairies and he would end up visiting them all, maybe asking the next one he met would work, Cotera was on his future path after all.

Still, he had definitely recovered plenty. To think he had forgotten he could see magical energies this way, though it wasn't too helpful to see the red and black fog in the direction of Hyrule's Castle in the far distance. Having his Aura reactivated was also very nice, even if it was just the basic one, the improvements it gave were just additive, he hoped it upgraded next time.

It did take a weight off his shoulders, metaphorically.

He couldn't help but whistle an old tune as he walked, it was extremely familiar even if he didn't remember where it came from.

So Nayru's still around than?
As a Dragon? Probably. I am guessing it is actually just Zelda though since she is active. She IS the goddess Hylia. She is a higher being, she is honestly probably more Hylia than Zelda at the moment as she is constantly using her powers to seal Ganon.

Naydra's not Nayru, Naydra, the dragon, is the Spring's Attendant. Same with Farosh and Dinraal.

Chapter 21

Venturing the Wild – 21

The rest of Magnus' day passed quickly as he made way down the Ternio Trail, he even came across some travelers and merchants, though he didn't do much other than exchange a light greeting with them.

He made it to the Zora River as the sun set on the horizon. As he stopped to make dinner, he checked the map to plan the next stretch of his trip. The way up to Zora's Domain was very sinuous, it practically coiled on itself as it had to make up for the rapid increase of altitude.

It made it very tempting to just cut his travel time by cutting through the forest areas and climbing the steep cliffs. He would do that on the way back, for now he would follow the path, especially because it would provide him with a much better map in the future. At least until he put his ship back together and ran a proper scan on the surface of the planet.

Thinking about the ship made him wonder if he should rush it, but even if he did it would be many months of running around. He would not just need to find and get to the pieces, but he would also need to bring them together for the System to carry out the reassembly process.

From rough calculations, they were spread well over the whole Hyrule, and while they could ignore all terrains, their max speed was slower than he walked. He would also have to protect them from monsters too.

It would be better to further improve his personal abilities first, and with his list of targets it would be about a year before he could start that project.

The thought stopped him and made him pull his calendar. It had been over two hundred and sixty days since he had arrived, time sure flew by. He would most likely celebrate a year in Hyrule after getting to Hateno Village.

After eating her decided to follow the path, even if he felt tempted to go out and fight some monsters in the forest. After cleaning what he used in the river, he made sure the fire was safe before leaning against a tree and closed his eyes to sleep.

A few hours before that, a young woman walked down a road in the Akkala region.

Chabi was glad to have rushed a bit, she had made it to meet Kilton before the strange little man had moved location. Thankfully her new sword had been great to deal with the few Bokoblins she had come across and had enough drops to buy an extra bottle of monster extract.

Though thinking about how well the sword had behaved, maybe following Magnus' suggestion and visiting the Great Fairy wouldn't be a bad idea. Plus she had collected plenty of materials in the last few weeks, if the tales were correct she could use some to improve her armor, and there was no reason to pass that kind of boon.

It wasn't hard to find the fountain, the fact that there was a path outline starting near the road made it quite easy. Though it was a surprise when the Great Fairy emerged from the fountain before she even got up to the mushroom stairs.

"Oh you're not him." Mija's voice sounded from all over the clearing.

Chabi raised an eyebrow. "Were you waiting for someone in particular?"

Mija blushes slightly and covers her mouth to giggle. "I don't think you've seen a young man around here?"

"About me tall? Dark skin? Purple hair?" She asked knowingly, seeing the Great Fairy nod she spoke. "No, never seen him."

Mija looked at her in silence for a moment before she broke out in laughter. Her whole body shook as she took the joke in good humor. After a moment she calmed down and wiped a tear off her eye, she leaned down and looked at Chabi.

"That was funny. Though I can see you met with him not long ago, and...oh my~"

Her tone made Chabi have to fight a blush.

"And so what?" She didn't manage to win.

Mija hummed knowingly. "Nothing, nothing," the Great Fairy giggled, "what did you bring you by?"

"Well, I did meet him, and he fixed my sword after it broke, it's just..." She steeled herself before pulling her sword out. "He recommended I bring it to you to check since I was going to be in the area."

The Great Fairy nodded as she leaned closer to inspect the blade.

"It certainly feels like him, I've never seen a weapon made this way before." She observed.

"Yeah, he mixed some Monster Extract and did some weird things as he reforged the blade." She explained.

"Monster Extract?" The Great Fairy asked.

Chabi nodded and pulled on one of the bottles causing Mija to recoil slightly. "Where did you get something like that?"

"Bought it from a strange guy, it's good for cooking." The Great Fairy simply gave her a look.

"I wouldn't recommend consuming that." The giant woman sighs. "On the matter of the weapon, it looks pretty safe."

"Are you sure? Magnus warned me that it could have weird abilities." A bit worried, she insisted.

Mija raised an eyebrow and looked at the weapon, carefully swinging it away from them. A blade made of light shot out from the sword, flying a dozen meters and severing a thick branch off one of the trees.

"Oh..." "Oh…"

"Well then, it looks like it's indeed a magic blade. You will need to learn to put a bit of magic into it, I recommend you don't push it." Mija spoke seriously. "I recommend using it normally and try to feel how it happens when it happens."

Chabi snorted. "So what I was going to be doing anyways." She rolled her eyes. "Thank you, on another subject," she grabbed the sword when it was returned, "what would I need for you to bless my armor?"

"Oh ho ho, now that's something no one asked me for in a long time, given what you're wearing…" Mija started to explain.

The young woman nodded, thankfully she had enough stuff in her backpack for the job. It looked like following Magnus' suggestion turned out to be a good idea. She would really need to keep in contact with the young man.

Magnus didn't depart straight away after his sleep. Instead he headed down to the river and proceeded to wash himself and his clothes.

It was the first time in months he bathed in the wild like this. Death Mountain was either too dry or he just visited the hot springs, meanwhile Robbie and Jerrin had actually constructed a fully functional shower powered by magitech, even if they didn't use it daily given its expenses put on the Ancient Furnace. Honestly he had been living in luxury for the technology level of Hyrule, hopefully he could work along with the researchers to spread this to everyone.

Since he didn't feel rushed he even took the time to unmake his braid. His hair had grown quite a bit in these last few months, it was well below his shoulders, more like half-way down his back. It was only because he could keep it all controlled in a single braid that he hadn't seen the need to cut it.

A small shiver made him stop what he was doing. He had hoped to not get caught in his underwear, but a traveler would have been better than the long, pink appendage that shot past the spot his head had been a moment before.

Magnus cursed as he quickly threw his soaked clothes to the riverside to keep them from getting dragged by the current as he followed the long, pink tongue to the monster it had tried to take his head off.

He hadn't seen any Lizalfos from close before, and if this one wasn't trying to kill him he would say it's quite cute as it looked like a bipedal chameleon. It was also the second monster he had seen properly armored; the metal plates appeared to have been tailored for its body instead of salvaged.

It was also armed with a particular-looking set of swords and shields. The first was a strangely angled sword that looked designed to be thrown, while the shield appeared to be lightly designed after a seashell. Though their making appeared shoddy, they had definitely not been crafted by any of the four local leading races.

He was glad to have recovered his Aura, because his danger sense was flaring as more Lizalfos swam out from the depths. They carried spears and bows too, while he only had his soaked underwear, and while it was technically enchanted, it wouldn't get him too far.

He dodged a pair of tongues and quickly snatched a stone from underwater to send the next tongue that came at him back with a heavy gift.

He threw himself off the way as multiple of the lizard monsters squawked at him in anger and unleashed tongues and arrows. Quick thinking had him opening his inventory where he would land, reaching inside and pulling his mace out.

And it was just in time as a Lizalfos, who had rushed to his side by swimming underwater, jumped out to attack him. The surprise attack didn't work as instead of getting an easy attack in, the monster got Graceful swung at its open chest as strong as he could.

Watching their fellow lizard skipping like a stone while its body had been bent in half stopped the other Lizalfos.

Magnus cracked his neck as he glared at them. "Don't expect me to pull any punches." He growled as the blue glow of his soul spread through his body.

It only took a beat for the Lizalfos' surprise to turn into anger, screaming at him and rushing forward.

The next lizard came at him with his shield up, which didn't matter much when Magnus' swing didn't just dent the shield. It practically drove the crumpled piece of meat through the monster. It surprised the one by its side long enough for him to kick its chin. It fell back as whatever passed as a brain was shaken brutally.

Without missing a beat he snatched the spear his last opponent had been handling and launched it at one of the bow-wielding Lizalfos before they could shoot at him again. He rushed forward and hammered down on the next spear-holding lizard's head, its helmet was as effective as the hammer as he snatched the spear off his hand and dealt with the other bow user.

There was a hint of fear in the last Lizalfos, but Magnus wasn't feeling like dealing with it and gave it a quick end. Its body already broke away into Malice as it skipped down the river.

"You there!" A voice came a moment later. "You should get out of the water, this area's been having problems with Lizalfos attacking…"

A pair of Zora guards swam down stream, the male one's words died down as he noticed the floating remains around Magnus. The one who spoke was a male of blue and white skin, though he could see some kind of tiger-like pattern mixed in the blue. While the other was a female of soft violet and white, she had a set of eye-catching fangs that remained visible even with her mouth closed.

"Yeah, I noticed." He told them and walked off the water to pick up his clothes.

He grumbled a bit as he washed off the dirt off the wet clothes, unashamed of being watched by the two guards.

"You dealt with all of them?" The female guard prompted.

"Seven of them, two with bows, three with spears and two with swords." He counted as he walked off the coast, followed by the two guards who watched him restart his fire and quickly put together a drying stand with a few sticks for his clothes.

"That should be all of them." The first guard stated.

"Then yes, they grabbed me while I was washing, thankfully I had my weapon at hand." He answered much softer, already feeling that bit of anger leave him.

"That's very brave of you, most would have ran away." The female Zora pointed out.

He shrugged as he fed more fuel to the fire.

"Wait, you're Magnus, right?" The male guard suddenly said in realization.

He quickly tempered his emotions down. "...yes."

"Oh! Then the prince will be very happy to hear you've arrived in the area." He said happily.

"Yeah, I was going to head up the path today, I just didn't want to arrive all sweaty and smelling from the travel." He explained.

"We will pass the word, plus with the Lizalfos taken care of the area will be safe." The guard said.

"Would you like help collecting their drops?" The female one asked.

Magnus rubbed the back of his head. "You can keep them if you want, I don't have a use for them at the moment." He smiled softly

"Thank you! These will be used to make medicine for the domain." She cheered and quickly rushed out.

The male guard gave him a look and shook his her before following her. Magnus wished them a good day as he checked his clothes, they would need a bit more to dry.

"You know…" the female Zora, Piper, said to her partner Helim.

"Yes?" He asked as they deposited the Lizalfos horns and the few organs they had recovered.

"I think I understand what Princess Mipha saw in Link." She giggled softly.

Helim's eyes opened wide. "Don't you dare start." He groaned and grabbed the shield they had found along with the drops. "Though… he certainly is as strong as the Hylian champion was."

She looked at it and whistled. "That's… I know those shields are barely better than wood in some ways, but that…"

"Yeah, you would need quite the hefty Goron to dent a shield like this. I doubt the monster that was using this survived the impact." He thought out loud.

She snorted. "Good, the only useful Lizalfos is a dead Lizalfos."

Her partner nodded and threw the dented shield away, the two had to go inform their prince about the traveler.

Magnus finished dressing and smiled, he had managed to keep his clothes from getting smoked. He would have easily erased it with prestidigitation, but that felt lazy.

He gave Graceful a look, the mace hadn't exactly survived the fight. The head was completely deformed from hitting so hard and the staff had bent severely too. It was almost comical how it nearly had the same shape as the Lizalfos' swords.

He would need to reforge it, though that wasn't the worst, he should see about improving it in the process. Maybe upgrade it into a war club or a spiked mace, though he would need to really reinforce it to prevent it bending like this version had.

He wondered if he could add a way to increase its mass during a swing… thoughts for later. Right now he cleans up the spot he had used for his camp and headed out, he still had a long walk ahead.

He threw the mace into the inventory, which had grown quite a bit in all directions, and retrieved his Eightfold Blade. A quick inspection showed it didn't need maintenance and he simply hung it from his waist before he started to walk up the road to the Zora's Domain.

Though said walk stopped a few minutes later when he reached the first bridge to appreciate the artistry of Zora architecture. The combination of blue stone and glow stone to produce construction that naturally produced their own light was incredible. There was also the fact that it was obviously ancient and still looked practically intact.

Still, there would be much better examples to observe once he gets to the city. Magnus resumed his walk up the road, just as he had expected the path snaked around back and forth.

Over the next couple of hours he went over the Zora river two more times before the path climbed more and, for the first time, moved away from the river to dive into the cypress forest. The beautiful coniferous grew tall and thin, along with their dark green coloration made the whole area feel darker even as he continually went higher and higher.

With such a peaceful walk, he couldn't help but have his mind wander, especially when walking by the river. Given his knowledge of the land, he wondered how hard it would be to set up a system to ship goods through the main rivers. The waterfalls could be a bit of a problem, but he envisioned building a set of chambers and gates to allow the same flowing water rise any ship coming from below and similarly lower any ship following the current.

Though with Lizalfos in the waters certain areas could become troublesome to defend. Maybe a project for the future once Calamity Ganon was dealt with.

That quickly devolved into another thought, what about the monsters once the evil being disappeared? Which were natural, for lack of a better word, and which had been created by Calamity? Would they all just dissolve into the same black and purple miasma? Or would they just be left there, aimless and just lashing out?

The path soon out of the forest and once more moved closer to the river, it rose and lowered and soon he was crossing the fourth bridge of the day. He had to stop a moment and look East for a moment, in the distance he could already see the next bridge, quite a magnificent construction.

He passed a few guards who simply gave him a greeting nod, which he returned, and continued on with their patrols. Given the lack of monsters he had come across, they were definitely doing their job well.

If he had to stop at the bridge to observe the next one, he had to stop in that one to look higher up on the Ruto Lake as the Zora Domain stood like a blue piece of art hidden in what once may have been a sibling volcano to Death Mountain. The tall precipices of rock acted as tall walls and the city stood above the large water reservoir that broke into a huge waterfall.

It was all constructed in the same architecture as the bridges, blue stone and glow stone came together with golden trimmings and large arches to create a city that reminded him of both water fixtures and a crown.

With the castle in complete disrepair, this was definitely the most beautiful hand-made place on Hyrule.

He soon resumed his walk, it was past noon and he still had a third of the way through. Not that it was long until he stopped again, as he came around the bend of the road up Ruto Mountain he saw a massive dam.

If he remembered Sidon's little history lesson so many months ago, it had been the first mega structure built between multiple races and kept Central Hyrule from being flooded during bad rains. It was as impressive as it was beautiful, he couldn't imagine the amount of work that must have gone into completing it.

It also presented the possibility of him cutting his way to Kakariko Village by crossing it and heading down the mountain towards the Lanayru region. Which wasn't entirely a bad idea and could be nice to pick up the ship segment and accompany it inland towards Rutala River.

It would delay the time between his departure from the domain and arrival at Kakariko Village, but it would cut into his future time. And no one should be angry if he told the respective parties about it.

He resumed his walk, as he approached the city, he saw more and more Zora wandering around. Not just on the paths and bridges, but also a number passing in the lake below. He slowed down as he approached the blue city.

"Magnus!" He easily recognized Sidon's voice by now.

"Prince Sidon." He greeted him.

He knew perfectly well the Zora would prefer if he dropped the formality, but he would only if the Zora dropped his exuberance in everything. So not anytime soon.

The shark Zora rolled his eyes. "You finally arrive, I would ask what delayed you, but some of the guards informed me you got into a fight with a pack of troublesome Lizalfos."

"It wasn't too much of a problem, honestly." He answered as the two started to walk in the direction of the city. "And the only thing lost besides time is the integrity of my weapon."

The Zora looked down at the weapon hanging from Magnus' hips.

"Not that one." He corrected and easily slipped his hand into the inventory and pulled the mace out, he tried to open the smallest hole possible for as short as possible. He showed him the weapon. "It's definitely not rated for my strength anymore." He laughed softly.

The Zora grabbed and inspected the weapon. "Impressive making, you crafted it, right?" The young man nodded to his words. "What will you do about it?" He asked as he returned it.

"I'm planning on reforging it, but going to have to go for something larger and sturdier. I'm thinking closer to a war club." He explained. "Though I will need to get some sturdy metal to make sure it lasts. I heard Lynels' weapons use some pretty good material, but that would mean I'd have to deal with a Lynel." He shrugged and threw the weapon back into the inventory.

If asked he wouldn't lie about it, he wanted to test his mettle against a Lynel. But there was a difference between a dumb Hinox he could take advantage of, and those lion-taurs who appeared to be quite smart and resilient.

The fact didn't seem to be lost on the Zora who just shook his head and took him on a tour, more than proud to show him the city.

The city was impressive, the concept of circles and arches was practically everywhere. With what could be called the royal family's place at the center- it was hard to call it a castle when the whole city appeared to be a single building from afar- there was a sort-of verticality as stairs and water currents allowed Zora and other races to travel the multiple levels of the city.

Most of the shops were located around the main plaza, right outside of the palace, while most people actually lived further down. The Zora were a very community-oriented race, keeping their homes mainly for personal possession and privacy while they spent most of their days in large public areas interacting with others.

While there were a few workplaces in what could be called the central city, most Zora either worked down on the coasts of Ruto Lake or towards the precipices to the back of the domain's water basin; these areas accessed by two more bridges on the sides of the city.

"Tonight's a bit late, but I expect to be invited to meet my father tomorrow." Sidon told him.

Magnus nodded. "I've no problem with that. Tomorrow I will also start to look for a teacher." He said. "Also, what should I do to offer my services?"

Sidon raised an eyebrow.

"I'm good at both making medicines and healing, as you know." He added with a smile.

The Zora nodded. "I'm sure my father will be interested in that tomorrow, don't worry, you're a friend of the Zora people." His large hand smacked Magnus' on the back.

The young man could only chuckle at the good mood the prince just oozed everywhere he went. He could see that he would like it here.

I wonder what Muzu and the other older generation Zora will think of Magnus, they aren't huge fans of Hylians after Mipha died, so I am curious as to whether or not they will be angered by him as well. He isn't a Hylian, but he certainly looks close enough that they might not like him anyway.

Watsonian: Magnus' pretty charismatic and easy-going.
Doylist: Unfortunately I had finished playing TotK before writing this part of the story, so I kinda forgot the whole thing.

Actually, a simpler explanation is given in game.

They just don't like Link.

It's rather obvious that the PC is Link to them, when you get there. They for some reason, even though they know Hylians don't live that long, do age, and that Link had something happen to him. Readily believe that he's mocking them with claims of having no memory, much less of them or Mipha. And since they all, for some reason, thought that they had a chance with Mipha, really don't like Link; because Mipha was certain he'd save her, and he never showed up. Till Game time. And while they did acknowledge her "obsession" with "that Hylian"; they also were genuinely shocked that Mipha's Zora Armor was tailored to Link. As in, it was completely Left field that she was in Love with him. That grim behavior when they learn this, isn't finding out she was in Love with a Hylian. Shockingly, they weren't racist. Their grim behavior was in realizing that they never had a chance at her heart. To the point that, in her memory, they choose to aid her chosen.

Yeah, maybe more fitting than my little thought. Honestly I had forgotten about the whole Zora armor issue. I haven't played that part f the game in years.

There's also the fact that Hyrule at this moment of time it's kinda moving in slow motion, or not really doing much. Most people are just living in the few settlements that exist, Central Hyrule's practically abandoned, outside of the stables, there's a huge dead area in the center of the map. Magnus' quite effectively kicking the sleeping towns awake one by one ahead of the schedule.

Chapter 22

Venturing the Wild – 22

Magnus followed Sidon into the throne room.

It wasn't wrong to call this room the jewel of the crown the domain was shaped as. From the outside it wasn't hard to miss it given the massive fish-head above the entrance, though once more the impressive side was inside.

Every centimeter of the chamber was decorated with large mosaics to form a massive and repeating pattern that spread from floor to ceiling. The room managed to feel both enclosed and open by the use of columns and large arches that showed the outside. There were also multiple pools with water flowing from water fixtures hidden behind light sources.

The king sat in the center of the chamber, on a throne fit for his size. King Dorephan was the largest specimen of Zora he had seen, apparently the combination of his whale characteristics and the fact that Royal Zora not only lived longer, but also grew during their whole life, had led to him passing the four meters in height.

"I am King Dorephan, ruler of the Zora." He greeted the large man formally.

"I'm Magnus," he bowed to the king, "I thank you for seeing me, your majesty."

The Zora laughed. "No need for formality, you have already shown to be a friend of my people by taking care of our latest Lizalfos problem. Rise."

Magnus stood straight and smiled. "I would say they made themselves a problem for me too and I had to deal with them."

"I would still have invited you to meet me when I learned about a Star Swimmer arriving in Hyrule." The King spoke gently. "I hope you come to learn from us?"

He nodded. "That's right, your majesty. I was looking to not only learn what the Zora can give, but also provide my skills in medicine in return."

"I can confirm he's quite good, father." Sidon stepped forward and flexed his arm to show the very thin line of discoloration on his shoulder.

The king nodded. "There's no reason to reject such an offer, I'm sure we can find a master interested in passing their knowledge in exchange."

Magnus opened his eyes in surprise. "I'm more than capable of paying for these lessons, your majesty, my stay at Death Mountain was quite fruitful."

The king laughed once more. "There's no need, Magnus, my son has stated you're a friend of his, that means you're a friend of the Zora."

He couldn't help but feel a bit bashful of being just declared so important, it made him feel like he needed to give something back.

"I will not betray this trust." He declared honestly.

"I don't doubt that, you remind me of Link in a way, but you're so different from him," the king said in reminiscence, "for one you speak a lot more." He broke out in laughter.

One of the advisors standing by the king simply closed his eyes and shook his head, Magnus could hear them mumbling something about not maintaining decorum. Though it appeared like he knew there wasn't much to do when it was the king doing it.

"I thank you for accepting this invitation, Magnus, I will see to get a message to you once the matters of a teacher are decided. For now you should go, I know my son wants to speak with you and he will be quite busy in the next few days." The king declared the meeting finished.

Magnus thanked him and followed Sidon out of the chamber.

"So what was he talking about?" He asked to the Zora.

Sidon blushed and looked away. "I'm meeting with a potential fiancee." He admitted.

"Congratulations, I hope you two get along well." He said.

Sidon chuckled. "I don't know if we'll get along well." He said embarrassed.

"Hey, be optimistic and put your best forward, I've a good feeling about that." Magnus offered.

"There's also the fact that it will still take years, Zora courting can take a few years, especially since she's from another domain." He explained.

The two talked about some light subjects as they walked, Magnus mainly following Sidon as the prince guided him out of the city through the East bridge.

Soon they stepped back onto firm land and the prince guided him up the precipices through a path etched on the stone. They climbed till the vast reservoir was revealed.

"Oh… it's impressive." Magnus whispered.

He wouldn't lie if asked if he had seen larger, bigger, more impressive, he had. But those were memories that held a different weight to them, he understood that the work that had gone into creating this wasn't the same as what had gone into those. He remembered that much.

"It is." Sidon nodded and pointed in the distance.

Magnus could barely make a shadow in the water. "That's where the Divine Beast Vah Ruta is."

After he spoke there was a beat of silence, an almost palpable fear that its name would have awoken the, nearly literal, sleeping giant.

He could feel the darkness lingering under the water, it allowed him to faintly feel the elephant shape of the massive construct.

"This is the closest I've come to one of them." He stated. "Vah Rudania keeps itself to the inside of Death Mountain after all."

"And for the better." Sidon said. "Still, I didn't bring you here to talk about such dark subjects. When we met in the Akkala region you told me you recovered some of your memories, right?"

Magnus smiled. "Yes, at least some of my siblings."

"That's great news, tell me all about them."

He laughed awkwardly. "That could be a bit hard."

"Because you don't remember all of them?" Sidon quickly asked.

"Oh I certainly don't remember them all, but that's mostly because of the ridiculous number of people that fall under the category of sibling." He said and laughed.

"What do you mean? I mean, how big can your family be? Ten, twenty people? I honestly fail to see how it could be any larger." Said the Zora in confusion.

"First thing, keep in mind that I do not remember everything, I honestly remember nothing about my father but one detail. My father created me and my many siblings, actually a good chunk of my siblings were constructed, let me show you some of them."

Sidon nodded as the young man concentrated before blowing a construct of Light and Darkness. The energies quickly claimed a large prism-shaped area by saturating it to the point it became a defined cutout.

"That's so much easier now." Magnus mumbled to himself. "This should work to show you some more of them."

He concentrated and fed the construct some of his memories, five figures stepped out of the deep darkness to step onto the center of the cube. Each of them appeared as a normal human, as far as they could. He smiled as he saw them move just like he remembered.

"These five are some of my older siblings." He explained to Sidon. "Rose, Aster, Passion, Lily and Daisy." Each one waved up as he named them. "This is a bit of a lie." Their skin melted away to reveal their natural metallic nature before armor unfolded and each of them was suddenly armed with their personal weapons. "The five of them are part of a team that spends most of their time heading out to deal with problems, extremely experienced with decades of successful missions. They are also infuriating older siblings to me and my two blood-related siblings."

"So you have seven siblings?" Sidon prompted.

"Like these five I've a few million more." He stated in pure honesty. "Of course I don't really treat all of them as siblings, they have their lives, homes, families and such. But we all share a father and do treat each other as family."

Sidon simply looked at him in total shock.

"Yeah, I did say they were built, and were done so in large quantities. Of course I can't explain things well because I don't remember much." He sighed.

"…How about your two blood-related siblings?" The shark Zora changed the subject.

Warm memories bubbled up. Magnus quickly dissipated the image of the Monsters and brought up two people very close to him. A pale woman with glowing green tattoos, she wore dark fabric and thin mesh in a very punk aesthetic; he bet it had never been seen on Hyrule. The other was a young man, his skin tone between hers and his, silver hair and blue eyes. He was about ten centimeters taller than him and about as broad, he wore a simple attire of jeans, shirt and a dress vest.

"These are my siblings, Claire and Milo." He explained. "I share a father with Milo and a mother with Claire, and both share a mother."

Sidon nodded along before stopping and looking thoughtful. "Wait… if you share a mother with Claire, and she shares a mother with Milo, but you said you're half-siblings…"

Magnus chuckled. "You're not wrong, Claire has two mothers, don't ask me how it happened, the best I can tell you is my father and let's leave it there." He waved it off. "None of us is normal, Claire and Milo are technically a fourth ghost, which makes some things very weird and should not be possible."

"Would that mean their mother's half-ghost?"

"Most likely, but I can't confirm till I remember more, it can get frustrating." He sighed. "Oh well, how about I tell you some of the funny times I remember?"

Sidon was more than happy to laugh at some of his younger times, and may never look at nuts and nut-based products the same way.

The old, slightly hunchbacked, blue-skinned Zora looked down at him, and not just because of the height difference.

"So you're the one that the king wants me to teach?" He asked as pointedly as his nose.

"Yes, Master Dent." Magnus answered.

The Zora scoffed. "You learned from the Gorons, no?" He nodded to the question. "Good enough for a start, but what you will learn here's nothing like the metal banging they do at Death Mountain."

The Zora smith rubbed his chin deep in thought.

"Do you have any examples of your work?" He requested.

"Yes, but it's currently in need of repair." Magnus answered.

"Show me."

The young man nodded and reached into his inventory, the Zora showing surprise before saying nothing as he pulled the bent and dented mace and handed it over.

"Hmm…" Master Dent inspected the weapon. "Basic and serviceable, but it has no soul to it." The old master scoffed. "I will say nothing about such a brute force weapon getting bent, but I'm sure you will learn something about more delicate weapons."

Magnus listened in silence as the Zora returned the weapon.

"First lesson you will learn about Zora smithing, we don't deal well with the intense heat the Gorons thrive for their work." The old master took a teaching attitude as he talked. "That's why we have developed a method to smelt and forge at much lower temperatures, this is mainly achieved by generating a special flame by the careful burning of ground opals and sapphires into our forges along with some other components."

Magnus drank every drop of knowledge, it was such an opposite method compared to the Goron's high heat and high power crafting. Zora learned to do delicate work at very controlled temperatures and special alloys.

The main of these was a silver alloy that excelled in cutting edge and flexibility while maintaining a respectable toughness. Zoras used this alloy to create weapons that were as beautiful as they were deadly.

Lessons with Master Dent soon filled Magnus' mornings and part of his afternoons, the rest of his time being occupied by either his personal projects, treating injured Zoras or producing medicine which was just as, if not sometimes more, needed.

Though for this he was looking to finally upgrade his alchemy equipment, which had led to him learning about a possible borax deposit in the mountains surrounding the domain.

It had been a month since his arrival to the Zora Domain, time passed very quickly when Master Dent was busy cramming as much about architecture and water dynamics into his head as he could every hour he was under the old Zora.

Just out of curiosity Magnus had checked how the progress for a perk related to it had achieved, and seeing nearly fifty percent in a month felt very much like a lot. Though there was also the fact that since he rarely ever checked, perks tended to be more of a surprise unless he was actively working for them and not just learning and experimenting.

He still had enough time to upgrade Graceful into a proper full metal kanabo. The weapon had gone from a mace to a metal bat with a spike-covered triangular body. He was going to go for an octagon-shaped body at first, but he decided that less faces meant the angles would hit much harder. And he could always reforge it if necessary, or he decided he didn't like it.

The weapon had also gained about twenty centimeters in length to reach a meter twenty. Which was just below three fourths of his actual height. And better not talk about weight, thank the goddess he could cheat physics to wield the weapon without getting flung around by it. Though that was a neat idea to look into the future.

Magnus stopped for a moment to check the map, mostly out of fear of having wandered off track, even if he had a pretty good sense of direction. He had just passed under Ploymous Mountain in the North precipices and was entering the area East of the reservoir lake, his destination was a bit ahead. He turned to his current companion.

"You know you didn't need to follow me, right?" He asked the female Zora guard.

"Hey, it's my free day, and it's not everyday I get to play guide." She said energetically.

He pointedly did not say anything about the map she had seen him use, plus she had mostly walked by his side and asked questions. Just like she had done the last few weeks since she found out about his pretty firm routine and managed to always pass by when he was free.

Magnus rolled his eyes. "You just want to see how Graceful works." He pulled the straight weapon from his back and gave it a careful swing. "If you want to use it all you have to do is ask."

He grinned and placed the weapon's end on the floor, the ground sinking under its weight.

She looked at him and laughed. "I can barely move it, you know you're a monster, right?"

He chuckled in similar good humor and lifted it. It had been an experiment, but obsidian dust had reacted very well with his Darkness and created an incredibly heavy and resistant heart for the weapon.

"It's more that I'm convincing reality to look aside for a moment." He said and hooked the weapon on his back again as they stopped. "Looks like we arrived."

It was a lovely area, a depression in the mountain with plenty of green grass, a number of trees and a small pond near the center.

"Yup, though I've to ask, why do you need those stones exactly?" She asked.

"It's one of the two ingredients I need to use to smelt glass capable of withstanding high temperatures." He explained. "Though it's more like I will mix it with a particular mix of sulfur to create a component that when used in the process of making glass will give it its properties."

She groaned. "Ugh, you sound like the craftszora masters." She complained.

He laughed. "I will take that as a compliment." He shot back as she huffed.

She followed him as he wandered around, collecting any stone that appeared to contain borax, throwing them into his inventory. There would be a need to refine those, and most likely see about requesting a bag of sulfur when merchants came around the domain in a few days.

"…is that?" He mumbled.

"What's wrong?" Piper asked.

"Pretty sure there's a Talus sleeping over there." He pointed to the pond. He could feel a moderate concentration of energy just underground.

"What?" She huffed. "I thought we had managed to keep them away from this area."

"Are they really that much of a problem?" He asked.

"More or less, most Zora don't come around here, but our weapons aren't great to deal with these stone giants." She growled a bit, he had to admit it made her look cute.

"Something big, heavy and blunt?" He asked knowingly.

"Yes, something big, heavy and…" She turned to look at him. "Are you sure you can deal with it?"

"Well, I killed a fire one with less and I did deal with a Hinox a few months ago." He counted, leaving the other monsters he had fought. "So I think this shouldn't be too hard unless it's another Igneo Talus, which I doubt, or an ice one, which would be a bit of a pain to deal with."

"It's most likely a Luminous Talus." She informed him. "They are pretty rare but tend to sprout from time to time. You see how there's some glowing bits on the half-buried stones?"

He nodded as he thought about it, if it didn't have some kind of elemental quality, he could most likely deal with the monster safely.

"Okay, keep some distance, there's going to be some flying debris." He warned and approached the pond.

Now that he was closer he was sure the monster had been there for a while, because multiple, much smaller, rocks were stirring and rising. A small army of pebblits popping from the ground and water.

Though their numbers may have been great, they weren't really a problem for him. The mini-Talus were easy to dispatch if he saw to it, even just picking them up and flinging them would break them down and return them where they came from. The problem was that they would be distracting from the main problem.

The ground trembled and small waves rose from the pond as the ground that had covered the monster cracked and lifted. A large mass of stone became exposed as the dirt and grass that had accumulated on top of it fell off like a shed skin.

If there was an opinion shared by everyone in Hyrule was that Talus didn't make much sense, really. They were animated stone monsters that appeared to have a geode-like heart filled with gems. It wasn't very clear if they grew or collected them, but there was treasure for anyone willing to hunt them down. They also had an impressive control over rocks, not only levitating any rock they claimed as part of their bodies, being able to even fling their 'arms'. But they could also shift the temperature of these masses of material towards the extremes if they were properly elementally aligned.

This particular example wasn't elementally aligned, but it showed its qualities as a Luminous Talus by how there were veins of glowing minerals all over its body. Not only that, it was also definitely larger than the fire version he had fought on Death Mountain.

Water quickly filled the hole the animated stone had left after digging itself out, the pond growing dark as the loose dirt quickly mixed with the water. And Magnus prepared himself to fight as he wielded Graceful.

The swing of the weapon cracked the few unlucky Pebblits to be close to him as the young man didn't wait for the monster to take the initiative. He stepped on the next of the small stones to keep a steady footing and jumped towards the next before blinding to the top of the monster.

He barely managed to get a good hit in, and he didn't even have a good footing, before Piper's scream of warning had him jump off the Talus to keep himself from being squished between its 'hands'.

Magnus could feel the excitement rising as he moved once more, beating the pebblits that had moved fast enough to reach him and quickly dodged the flying boulder. He once more blinked onto the monster, his feet firmly on it even as it shook.

He tightened the grip on Graceful with both hands enough the leather of the handle creaked and his aura became visible over his arms as he brought it down. It sounded like a bomb had gone off, even the Talus seemed shocked at the hit.

He couldn't tell if the beast was frozen in pain or surprise, but he wasn't going to let the advantage go and swung once more. The second hit was just as strong as the first, creating a massive crack on the Talus' exposed core and making it throw him off.

It may not feel pain, but it sure showed some kind of anger as it started to dig large clumps of compressed dirt from the ground and fling them at him one after the other, forcing him to keep on moving as they just exploded behind him.

Magnus ran in a spiral, moving closer before blinking onto the beast and finishing the work. His next wasn't just backed by his Aura, but his Light wrapped around the weapon while Darkness filled it up. The edge of the weapon hit the crack and practically split it in too.

The Talus froze as the crack splintered it in half, its arms fell, unsupported. The monster was dead, breaking down into Luminous stone and other precious stone. The remaining Pebblits ran away or buried themselves into the soft ground.

He couldn't help but grin as he noticed the spot where the Talus had unearthed itself showed a large deposit of Borax, most likely the pond dried seasonally.

"That. Was. Amazing." Piper surprised by grabbing him by the shoulders and shaking him, or at least as much as she could as the weight of the Kanabo allowed her.

"Talus are destructive, but not really that dangerous. They are dumb as a rock, pun only half intended." She chuckled at his joke. "I helped with a large number back on Death Mountain during mining hours, and the hardest part of them was their bodies' high temperatures."

She nodded. "I think the worst we had here was an ice one during a pretty bad winter. The real problem came when it fell into the reservoir and started to create an iceberg, we had to fish it out, took us nearly a week to get it to the other way of the precipices and drop it towards the sea." Piper reminisced. He could only imagine how troublesome such a monster may have been.

Magnus started to collect the loot and the loose bits of the borax deposit.

"This turned out to be a very bountiful walk, even if I had to work for it." He told her. "Should I call you my lucky Zora?" He teased her as he turned away, wondering if she was blushing.

He only heard a cute huff that made him grin as he pushed the Luminous Stone into his inventory, he would have to inspect the stone later, most likely he could find a use for it.

"Should we go back?" He asked her.

"Hmm, we can try to get up to Shatterback Point, but I think it would be better to leave that date for another time." She started innocently, making him raise an eyebrow.

"If you say so." He answered and both chuckled as they started their return to the domain.

...I ship it. If Link isn't going to get into a relationship with a fish girl, Magnus should get the chance.

Magnus' actual ship won't happen until the sequel (or more like the second part of this story, yes this part Venturing the Wild is complete, 55 chapters already written and proof reader, I'm in chapter 19 of the second part).
