Just got back from my trip. ... I need to write up a chapter for Hornet Quest but I'll be back later with I guess some more examples on how Aspects and Actions work.
Mulan standing in the center of a german Town, Jafar, the evil wizard has just used his snake Hypnosis Magic to turn a crowd of peasants against her. There are a lot of Angry Peasants with a touch of Hypnosis (4) but Mulan can probably beat them in a straight fight, but she might take some hits and even if she wins, she'll be in no state to pursue Jafar, and might get into more trouble with the town. How should Mulan get out of this situation.
Offered basic action: [ ] Stand her ground as "The Hero of China" (Faces active resistance)
[ ] Write in
Player 1: Well, Mulan's a dab hand at giving rousing speeches, most of these peasants are lightly hypnotized, could Mulan perhaps snap them out of it with "Strength and Discipline."?
Me: Yes she could, but that would face the same active resistance, although a success would put her in a much better position than just fighting her way through.
Player 2: that's tricky, but not a bad option. Is is possible for her to do the same thing pulling on "The Hero of China"
Me: While Mulan could give a speech based around that, but she's unfamiliar with this country and culture, and would suffer from "Another Time, Another Place" if she tried.
Player 2: Well, that won't work then. Although, Mulan doesn't really need to deal with the mob, she just needs to get away from them so she can pursue Jafar. Can Mulan use "Mysterious as the Dark Side of the Moon" to vanish into the night and escape from the mob?
Me: Absolutely she can. Furthermore, this mob is looking for violence, not a chase, that action would only face passive resistance at great(+3).
Player 2: well, clearly that's the way to go [X] Try to escape using "Mysterious as the Dark Side of the Moon"
Player 1: [X] Try to escape using "Mysterious as the Dark Side of the Moon"
------
This is the general structure for using aspects. Figure out what your goal is, what you want the character to do in a given scene, and ask how you could apply their various aspects to the situation. I'll try to offer a "basic plan" but I'm going to try to avoid offering what I see as the "best plan" for a circumstance, and my ideas are not the players ideas, you might come up with something even better than what I would suggest. (Passive resistance is generally easier than active resistance, because dice tend towards higher numbers at -1,+1,+2)
The Chapter will be out sometime tomorrow, because I should really sleep.
Crime Scenes: Peter uses his many talents to hunt for clues and evidence. (3, 5, 6) -> +5 vs a great challenge (+3) Succeeds.
Peter Coalson and a detective stand in a darkened apartment room, carefully examining the meager possessions of the room's former inhabitant. They've been through a number of similar scenes, observing the smashed personal possessions and disarray, despite the pristine windows and undamaged doors that led into each room. The detective is clearly over his head, writing down notes on each individual item they encounter, but he doesn't appear to have connected the dots. Peter decides to clue him in. "Take a look at that lamp for me detective." He says.
"It's smashed." The detective says, taking a look at his notes. "That's interesting. A Lamp is the only item that was destroyed in every single crime scene."
"Useful to know, but I think there's something more important here. Look at the way it was destroyed." Peter says as he picks it up. "It looks like some very strong man put their hand on the top of it and crushed it down, flattened it. It's a very curious bit of damage. We've seen two small dressers, haven't we?" He asks the detective.
"Uh … yes sir. The one on Brown street was smashed in, and there was one on Epsom street that had its drawers ripped out and looked like they were hurled across the room."
"Curious. Do you happen to have written down how those other lamps were damaged?"
"Looks like, crushed, flattened, crushed… what in god's name. They're all crushed!"
Peter nods "Yes, I noticed that as well. It's clear that some kind of struggle or brawl took place in each apartment, based on the damages, but more than that, the deliberate manner in which the lanterns were destroyed could not possibly have been done by the victims. This is our connection to the perpetrator itself!"
The detective fiddles with his notes. "But then, why go through that much trouble to destroy the lanterns in the same way?"
Peter looks around again. "On that topic, I'm not totally sure. I do have a theory though …"
Barebones Evidence (1/5) upgraded to Enigmatic Evidence (3/5)
South Docks Market: Director Faith tries to make contact with the underclass. (4, 5, 6) -> +5 vs Stubborn proletariat (2) -> -1. A titanic success. Stubborn Proletariat rolls at -2 against characters with a trait that makes them familiar with the lost and downtrodden.
Amanda Haynes walks through the markets and witnesses a city beset by fear and mistrust. All around people are going about their day in a hurried fashion or dragged into old arguments and grudges flared up by the fear and uncertainty.
Amanda has spoken to a number of people around the market already, to see the shape of the impact that this case has had on the community. It started with the orphans out on the streets, people the police department don't even know about, people for whom vanishing suddenly was a sad but ordinary state of affairs. But never in these numbers, within a matter of weeks the city's population of street urchins and other displaced children has fallen by half, and those that remain are clustered close together, violently opposed to any group that approaches them. Then the kidnappers started entering apartments. Never a room occupied by more than one person, and despite the damages found in the morning, no one has heard a kidnapping in progress.
Well, almost no one. One of the butchers that Amanda speaks to informs her of a young woman who is familiar to the crowds of South Docks. This young woman began to investigate when the street urchins started to vanish, and it is by her word that people began clustering together. This young woman has tried to establish watches to organize the people of South Docks, and ensure they keep watch on their fellows, so no one goes missing in the night. This action has met with some success, but despite this, some of the grudges run deep and she hasn't been able to devote her full attention to mending fences.
Speaking more with some laborers in the eastern quadrant, Amanda is able to put together a very interesting map.
Director Faith has made contacts in the South Docks, and now receives +1 to all roles there. Director Faith reveals the aspect Suspicious Sites (?)
Scotland Yard: Mulan and the Rookies try to whip the detectives into shape. (5, 1, 2, 6) -> +2 vs Overworked and Understaffed(2, 3, 6) -> +2. Tied.
Mulan sits as the rock in the center of the storm, people racing back and forth around her as she issues directions. Crime in London does not take a break when mysterious disappearances rock the city, although the scale certainly drops. Mulan scratches out characters on a sheet of typewriter paper set in front of her, managing deployments of officers across the city and new information being sent in to the police department. While the officers are able to make progress on their backlog and improve morale across the more upscale parts of the city, the degree of mobilization is rather alarming to the underclass, and they've grown more hostile.
Overworked and Understaffed converted to Servants of the Nobility. D.I.S.N.E.Y. will no longer be opposed by Servants of the Nobility.Stubborn Proletariat increases to (4)
Later in the day, the division regathered under the roof of Scotland Yard once more. The team is making plans, and sharing what they've discovered amongst each other. Peter and Director Faith both seem very impressed at the change in morale among the police force. Suddenly, the door is slammed open and a child marches in. A girl between the ages of 15 and 16, strolls into the police headquarters like she owns the building, her eyes clearly picking out the presence of D.I.S.N.E.Y. but she walks past to knock furiously on the door to Lestrade's office. When Lestrade opens the door and sees the girl standing there he lets out a sigh and covers his face with a hand. He says "Enola, you know you can't be here. Every time you show up here you risk your brothers finding out and tying my hands for good."
The girl, Enola seems to fume at this dismissal, and fires back with "Get your head out of your arse Lestrade! We have a big problem."
The two begin arguing intensely.
Well now, You have gathered a lot more evidence on what might be going on here and have some potential points of interest to examine. At the same time The Sun is Setting and that key witness you've been looking for just walked through the door.
