Unprecedented Times [A Pokemon Ranger Quest]

Okay damn. I was not expecting the egg clutch.

At least the giant Muk was a (relatively) high note to end this part of Kylie's day on. Very cool.

Now on the topic of what to do next.

Kylie was specifically tasked with setting up tethers, but also told to not to worry as it would be a multi-day project.

So, despite Kylie already having a close call, I think I'm going to say...

[X] Start looking for invasive Toxapex and Mareanie

It is the presence of these invasive species that makes setting up the tethers particularly dangerous.
And we have direct evidence that they are already breeding.

Even in the worst case scenario, where we clear out a bunch only for more to move into the now empty territory overnight. Then, we are still doing good and necessary work.

[X] Start looking for invasive Toxapex and Mareanie

I think we need to get the rest of these.

Excellent capture sequences, OxfordOctopus.

The dead eggs was a gutpunch and the Muk was so cute.

[X] Start looking for invasive Toxapex and Mareanie

Very not want to be ambushed while tethering, especially after getting the Muk out and making them free to spread.

The Muk may well find a very busy life hereabouts - theres going to be quite a lot of chemical spills that need cleanup and Muk would just eat it all up.

Very amiable fellow, pity the neighbors are so thorny

Jeez for me this quest has gone from something I keep track of vaguely to one of my favorite Pokemon fanworks going right now so fast! I'm not even particularly partial to the whimsur line, but the story, world building, and characters are just so gripping.

Thanks for the chapter and keep up the amazing work

[X] Start looking for invasive Toxapex and Mareanie

The fate of the Mareanie eggs is a tragedy within a tragedy, but at least there was something good to be found. While the Muk reveal wasn't quite a surprise thanks to the speculation during the previous vote, it was still fun to see Kylie discovering what is basically a giant lost pet happy to find a friendly hooman. Getting it back home would be the best result, if at all possible. Though, as it's already an industrial Alolan Muk, I wouldn't be surprised if it finds a potential new job helping out in Hoenn in these circumstances, temporary or otherwise.

I'd say probably the smartest move right now is getting backup, and then looking for more invasive pokemon. Kylie almost lost her eye, there, and discretion is the better part of valor.

(Or, if getting backup isn't an option, then at least seeing if we can scrounge up a face shield that'll reduce the chance of further injury.)

I think this is the first time I've thought of a Muk as cute! The big guy was such a nice change of pace compared to the Toxapex, and I hope we get to see a little more of him before he gets shipped off back to Alola.

I'm wondering if any of the Mareanie eggs are viable. It would certainly be an interesting contrast if a Mareanie turns out to be one of Kylie's pokemon later on, what with her having had to save (presumably) their parent from heavy metal/industrial poisoning.

"Whis—!? Whismur!" B.B. barks at you, and it's definitely the Toxapex venom that makes you think he sounds almost affronted by your attempt to soothe him.
Why do I get the feeling B.B is just a little smarter than Kylie thinks he is? I'm aware this AU has most Pokemon as animalistic, but I wouldn't be surprised if they understand more than they seem.

Considering that we are short of manpower we probably aren't going to get backup unless in a life/death situation.

Seconding on the Mareanie egg, I think it's just a really good Pokémon to have in general, it's bulky and once it is strong enough wild Pokémons bar Steel types will probably think twice before openly picking a fight with it and us since in the wild getting in a brawl with something poisonous is generally a terrible idea, with the possibility of being an easy picking while recovering or being put out of commission for hunting.

Also hoping the Alolan Muk sticks around to help contain the spillage of the first boat.

Now for voting:

[X] Get to work setting up tethers

My reason for this is that

1. We just out of a big fight and we need to recover

2. This area just turned into free real estate, I think an early sweep won't do much to stop the Mareanie and Toxapex to start settling during the night, it's probably more efficient to just do a sweep with more people another day.

"Animalistic" is a pretty broad category, and a lot of animals are smarter than we tend to give them credit for, honestly. Pets responding to their owner's distress is not uncommon, as I understand it, even before you get to things like corvids using tools and so on.

Muk is such a good boy. Swept across the ocean to another continent and he just gets to work cleaning up spills like he's supposed to. I hope he gets rewarded with some extra toxic garbage as a snack when he gets back to Alola.

Regardless, if you have any tips or advice on how to approach situations like that I'm all ears. Also, if you guys really wanted the option to interact with the Muk in your own way, tell me, and I'll try to adjust for the future. I'm still learning.
For me it didn't feel at all like something was missing. We just had a tense encounter, so I would actually say that ending the chapter on this calmer note was a good fit.

Anyway, the translation of that bit of Hawai'ian roughly comes out to "these things won't cause your wife to return". It's not a reference to any actual movie, it's just like the only partial string of Hawai'ian I know and had to double check through a dictionary. If I got anything wrong, please tell me.
Why is that the one phrase you know?

I like the reasoning for this. I will say that I only think it applies to the immediate vicinity, and once we get beyond that we should be more careful. But the area around us is safe for now, and we should take advantage of that

[X] Start looking for invasive Toxapex and Mareanie

I'm leaning towards trying to find a few more of them right now. We took that near miss, but B.B. is fine and probably good for a few more fights if nessecary.

Okay, the Mareanie egg clutch was pretty horrible, but I'm glad the plan worked overall. The Mareanie is probably in for a very long recovery process (if it can) and may not be fit for release back into the wilds. The two eggs, at this point would need a breeder to care for them, they've been removed from the territory of the Mareanie and trying to reintroduce them would probably just lead to it destroying them.

I was honestly shocked to see that it was an Alolan Muk after all, even if it wasn't in the boat I expected it to be. The fact that he was just a big ol' goopy boi that was scared and defensive instead of attacking was honestly heart-melting. I really do hope that we can at least get him to someone that speaks proper Alolan to help keep him calm, if we can't get him to Alola altogether.

The Muk also made sure that the area around its hiding place was pretty much completely free of Toxapex and Mareanie, since those spines were basically snacks for it. So best to take advantage of that fact to allow us to set up as many tethers as possible. Also, it's possible that we could theoretically have Muk eat all of the contents of that other ship; but probably not feasible.

we probably don't want to be attacked by Toxapex or Mareanie while otherwise distracted, and while the boat we're on is currently clear it might not stay that way, considering the state of the rest of the place and the relative cleanliness of this boat. After all, the thing keeping the Mareanie and Toxapex away was the Muk, which is no longer a factor.

Why is that the one phrase you know?

A piece of fanfiction I read a long time ago. I can't remember the name anymore, but whoever wrote it went into great detail about the breakdown of this particular sentence and that, specifically, stuck with me. As it would turn out, I think they probably lifted the phrase wholesale from a Hawai'ian dictionary as the sentence is used as an example in a few words which belong to the sentence as a whole (which is how I got the right accents on the letters and got it in the right configuration), as far as I can tell.

Now why this specifically is used for that, I couldn't tell you, but it's fun how stuff like this gets passed along.
