Unprecedented Times [A Pokemon Ranger Quest]

I feel as though a Mantyke is a really fun idea, but is also more representative of Kylie's upbringing. There's nothing wrong with something tying into her history like that, but even so, I look at the option of the psychic rescue kind of like how Urchin was talked about in the recent update. Without being a ranger sent out to Hoenn, Kylie would have never had the opportunity - at least not realistically - to be with our favorite little Mareanie. I think it was icing on the cake that she befriended Urchin alongside the conflicts with some particularly menacing Toxapex. Especially the big one.

In that same sense, the psychic-type rescue from Noriaki is an opportunity that is only Ranger Kylie Parsons gets to see, not Fisher Kylie Parsons or whichever other characters there are from Kylie: Into the Parsons-Verse. Since that's a stronger connection to the steps of the journey we've taken with her, I'm going with Noriaki when the time comes. I love the idea of a little baby Angus Jr., but the rescue-mon is another step forward for Kylie that makes the most sense for the life she's living.

There's my two cents, feel free to spend it all in one place.

If we're going to have a cap of three, I'd rather go for the psychic friend. If four was an option, I'd consider taking a Mantyke first and going for a psychic later (if that's an option), but with the soft cap I'd like to guarantee the psychic.

Either way, I'm very excited that we're spooling up towards a new member of Kylie's little band. With two hooks having dropped (and one having a time limit attached) it feels more imminent than when there was just one "nebulous in the future" hook.

[X] Urchin has become more cunning

[X] Urchin has become more proactive

I genuinely considered voting for all 4 of these, but as much as I like all of them, I definitely like Cunning and Proactive the most.

I'm also actually super in favor of getting a Mantyke, now that it's been brought up. Mantine is a really good option for transport (which we're very lacking in) and it's such a nice character tie-in to have Angus's kid on the team.

I love Mantine. Very lovable pokemon line

I mean. Any good expedition group needs Big Sky or Firebrand for pickups and drop offs. Excellent 4th or 3rd mon to deploy a tactical Kylie and her crew

Something like BB, Urchin, a Psychic and Big Sky (Mantine) is a cool ranger team. I'd speak against thinking of BB like artillery, the lad's enough of a powerhouse to qualify as a centerpiece. I think my preferences for the vote would be Cunning or Proactive but they're all good. I love Urchin. Lovable lil hellion she is. I'm a huge fan of how she uses Aqua Jet like rocket skates!

The idea of Urchin being able to glomp onto Kylie like Power Armor once she's Toxapex gets even better! Jet boots! That's mecha anime as heck!

I know they are useful, but I am against getting another Mantine or another water type. we should concentrate on getting a non-water type. We need one for transportation and mantine won't give us a good enough reason since most of our missions took place inland even when on an island.

Pragmatically, the way I see it, there will always be that second chance in the future for a family Mantyke. There won't be a second chance to accept a particular rescue.
The flaw I see with this logic is that we don't have a time limit to get the rescue. Taking the Mantyke doesn't mean Kylie suddenly loses her chance to get a rescue.

It's possible that she won't get the one she doesn't pick by the time this quest ends, but not because she picked one.

hopefully will get more thoughts in on the update soon (very good, loved the mantine descriptions <333) but for now:

[X] Urchin has become more proactive
[X] Urchin has become more courageous

Yeehaw surf's up! Groovy chapter.

In hindsight equipping Urchin with jet propulsion is a rather risky decision. But an amphibious fast-moving missile-launcher is QUITE valuable in combat.

Regarding secondary pokemon, since Kylie caring for her party is a frequent lens through which we see the logisics of caring for pokemon, I want as much variety as possible. So I'd prefer a psychic over a mantine, but preferably one of the less human psychic types. We already have a land mammal in the party (BB).

She lunges forward, closing the rest of the distance, and smacks her tendril into a trunk. Part of it collapses into a spray of water and splinters, which and the force behind it promptly throws Urchin's tendril right back into her face. She squawks, staggering back, and begins tweeting in outrage.

She turns to look at her tendril, then shoves it into her mouth.

"MRGH!"
What happened here? Did she get a splinter in her tendril and is trying to lick the ouchie?

For the vote: Have we had issues with Urchin lacking courage? "courageous" seems like a lower priority.
"Cunning" seems the most directly useful, giving her more patience and vigilance will mitigate her hyperactivity in battle. But "proactive" seems the most entertaining option for the narrative. Ahh, hard choice!

[X] Urchin has become more cunning
For me it's between this and proactive. I like her taking a more of an interest in the world around her, whether that's by understanding of how to get what she wants (cunning) or doing more things like helping with the net without being asked (proactive).
Main one I'd dislike is boisterous, if only because it'd reduce instances of stealthy Urchin.

Mantine has a lot going for it: it's big enough to ride; Kylie's familiar with it/family legacy; it can both fly and swim. It would lean us towards a water specialty, which overall I wouldn't mind but I feel like it'd make it harder to work in Orre considering the desert. I guess we could stick to a coastal role?

One neat thing about Mantine is, all three of their potential Abilities would've helped Socks on that ride through the storm: Swift Swim for increased speed in rain, Water Veil for burn immunity and Water Absorb for healing.
In support of this agenda, I recommend pushing for Dig in the next training session.

Urchin must become a the biggest menace possible.
Still need to teach her Mud Slap first as a prereq, but she enjoys flinging mud at things anyway so I'm sure it'll be no great hardship. :p

I think she got offended at her tendril smacking her in the face so she bit it to assert dominance.

[X] Urchin has become more courageous

Mantyke is definitely more appealing to me than just a psychic type. A link to Kylie's home that doesn't really tie us further to aquatic missions because a Mantine can fly.

[X] Urchin has become more proactive

Mantine is not purple
Mantine might be loud enough

It is very important to me that we adhere to these two themes for Kylie's team.

(Which is partially why I am hoping for a Noibat at some point, it ticks those boxes while also being a flyer and possibly having some Telepathy.)
Agreed, now you mention it. Loudness is clearly more individual than species-specific, though; Urchin isn't competing with a Whismur, she's just very loud for a Mareanie. However, I would note that a Mantine is already dark blue; a bluer purple wouldn't be too out there for reasonable color variation in a domestic population.

... I hope we get "beeeeg" choice for a mantines too, I want the biggest sea carpet people have ever seen, I want our carpet to blot out the sky and be mistaken for a small island!
From your phrasing, have you heard of the cryptid (or possibly just a horror story) called the Black Carpet? The general idea is a big enough salp or siphonophore colony to eat sharks, fool sonar depth checks, and so on.

I think going for a psychic type is the right move, because Kylie is fairly uniquely positioned to shelter an abused psychic type. A Mantyke from her parents would find a good home no matter what, but there's a need for people with both the skills required to work with an abused psychic type pokemon, and protect them. As a Ranger, it seems like the right thing to do.

I like the idea of Urchin having mystery dungeon adventures. That and I'm curious as to how BB would react to Urchin mirroring Kylie.

Your descriptions of the various mantines and their body language are really charming. I've definitely been converted to getting one. Surprisingly diverse move pools too as a bonus. I'm still leaning towards the rescue from Noriaki as Kylie's next Pokemon however, even if Kylie not having her own little 'Gus bums me out.

I feel like a psychic-type would be better coverage and utility than a Mantine (I'm not seeing any moves that sing that we have to have them), and we'd have a Mantyke for a while. Would a Mantyke be able to carry/transport us and how long would it take to become a Mantine? I know B.B. was a Whismur for years and we'd be getting a freshly hatched Pokémon, right?
