-[x] Kanshou. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to gain one of the five treasure blades of China. Kanshou and its partner sword Bakuya were said to be swords without compare, there was nothing that they could not cut, and those they wound are said to never be able to recover from those wounds. While the income from the land given would be nice, your family is already very wealthy as it is. This is an opportunity to gain a weapon that is legendary in its own right, and who knows maybe someone will be able to find a use for it.
-[x] Train with the…: Your father has decided that you are finally at the right age to start learning how to fight. Among nobles it is not an all too uncommon sight to see a noble youth being trained in combat considering the times in which you live. For this task your father's chief bodyguard Souma has been appointed to teach you. Reward: Increased personal combat score and martial score. Gain proficiency with a weapon. Chance of Success: 80/60/40%
--[x] Sword
-[x] Study the Art of War: The teachings of Sun Tzu still ring true today, even hundreds of years after his death. I have always wandered what would happen if lu bu appeared in the kingdoms manga?

He did. He's part of the Zhou army.

@Satoshixkasumi

Please see THIS LINK to know what i'm talking about.

Basically the same thing. The manga hasn't shown him to be anything except a fricking BEAST of a warrior. In one omake during the coalitions attack on Qin the Zhou sneak around under the lead of Riboku. Riboku's foces attack a city and in the omake fire Hou Ken from a catapult and straight into the wall where he impales himself. Some Qin gaurds just look on in the cartoonyness wiht "...".

He's very strong though and he's basically a mountain man who lives to fight and be the best warrior ever.

Makes me wonder on who would win hou ken or Lu Bu?

Also question for the GM. is it possible to make a copy's of other ancient empire soldiers?

Makes me think what would happen if our riboku was around with ouki during the first appearance of hou ken or during the zhao war arc.

I went through the thread again and unless I've gone blind, we don't have a specified age right now. Albeit we're still considered young enough to be seen as a 'Child Soldier.' We'll probably be 14 or something come the end of the extended prologue though. That sounds adult enough to start marching towards bloodbath and glory.

You're 4, and 14 is not an all too uncommon age for you to step onto the battlefields of this era. That is why I am considering if I should ask you guys whether or not you want to change the turns from half a year turns to full year turns, both to get there faster and make it so that the stats don't end up wonky.

I don't mind giving us the option to choose activities that will cover up two entire years. That'll both help speed up the prologue as well as aid in your narrative for when you flesh out our choices. Given our current standing, I doubt a whole lot can actually happen in half a year still.

@Japanime

@Japanime

I'll just make it a vote just to be sure.

You will only be five the next year anyway. But things can happen, just not anything you can do about it.

Sounds like a plan. I'm looking forward to our little-hopefully-becomes-grand misadventure. Good luck with the writing, bossman. \o7

-[x] Sword

Rolled: 92+10 (Genius trait) +10 (Martial Prodigy trait)=112 Needed: 20, Crit Roll: 17

"Again!" Souma instructs.

With almost uncanny precision you raise your practice sword swiftly to the next stroke in the sword form.

Ever since you started learning the basics of how to wield a sword, things seemed to come naturally to you.

At first you simply went through unarmed exercises in breathing and stances.

However, after Souma noticed that you had the basics down rather quickly, he decided to take your training a bit further. With a practice sword in your hand Souma started to go through the motions of one of the most basic sword forms.

When you seemed to replicate his performance after a few tries, Souma remarked, "You are your father's son."

From then on Souma began to intensify your training, working not only to make sure you retained the fundamentals necessary for swordsmanship but also training your body as well.

In a candid moment, Souma told you, "The battlefield is unforgiving, there will always be someone faster than you, stronger than you, or more talented than you. That is why I am pushing you so hard now, because knowing the basics and conditioning your body will one day save your life against an opponent who is simply better than you."

So, over the past six months you have drilled, and drilled, and drilled the most basic of sword forms into your body so much so that you can now do it blindfolded. No matter how monotonous the training is, you persevere.

Upon seeing your dogged determination, Souma one day asks you the reason for why you are trying so hard at such a young age, when other noble brats would simply be playing around.

When you failed to give a coherent reply, Souma simply laughs and remarks, "Ah, it must be that sword that Lord Ten received from the King."

Your vehement denials don't seem to convince him as the following training session, he brings Kanshou into the courtyard where you train and leaves it dangling in front of you. Sometimes he uses it as a crutch as he instructs you, other times he cuts wood with it like it was an axe.

As you fought through the distraction, you swore that one day Kanshou would be yours to wield.

One day, after a particularly strenuous training session, Souma tells you, "Don't worry Young Master, we get to start the fun part next week…sparring."

You will swear to all who ask that you did not whimper that day…nope not one bit.

Gained: +2 Martial. Trait, "Natural Swordsman":+1 Martial, +10 to sword training rolls, +10 to personal combat rolls while using a sword. Trait, "Sword Novice (3/10)": no malus when using a sword. Further sword training unlocked.

[x] Study the Art of War: The teachings of Sun Tzu still ring true today, even hundreds of years after his death. While you are still in the process of learning how to read your father has decided to set aside time to teach you the lessons from within. Reward: Increased martial score. Gain basic knowledge required to learn more advanced tactics. Chance of Success: 80/60/40%

Rolled: 45+10 (Genius trait) +10 (Martial Prodigy trait)+20 (Double Down)=85, Needed: 20

"So, Boku, what does the phrase 'When you surround an army, leave an outlet free. Do not press a desperate foe too hard.' mean?"

After a moment of thought, you reply, "It means that you should leave a way for a surrounded enemy to escape, because if you don't then the enemy will just fight to the death, and take some of your men with you."

Bringing his hand down to ruffle your hair, your father praises you by saying, "Very good Boku, you are getting better at this."

For the past six months, your father had been reading to you the Art of War. Each day he would read a few proverbs from the text, and you would have to respond appropriately before your father considered your learning satisfactory.

At first you had some trouble parsing through the hidden meanings contained within each proverb. However, after some effort and no small amount of your natural genius, you were finally able to adequately answer your father's queries.

Gained: +1 Martial. Trait, "Novice Tactics (2/10)": can now formulate basic battle plans. Further tactics learning unlocked.

Diplomacy:

[x] Etiquette Training: As a scion and heir to a noble family you will be expected to know the proper manners and etiquette when dealing with others of your station. You do not only represent yourself, but your family, and potentially your state. That is why your mother has taken the time to personally instruct you in the proper deportment expected from a noble. Reward: Increased diplomacy score. Lessens chance of offending other nobles. Chance of Success: 80/60/40%

Rolled: 83+10 (Genius trait)=93, Needed: 20

"Now one more time Boku." Your mother says as she initiates the bow, which you swiftly follow with a bow of your own, though yours goes lower than hers.

Upon assessing your performance, she remarks, "Very well done."

This is the way things have been for the last few months. Hours spent with your mother going over the etiquette that is expected of you, whether it be how to bow to our peers, or simply the proper seating arrangement at a dinner.

Honestly, you aren't sure at which was harder: the proverbs father has been teaching you, or all these rules on noble etiquette your mother has been drilling into you.

But in the end, you manage to get through the basics of the etiquette expected of a noble child.

While it is boring to you now, it is surely better than making a fool of yourself in front of one your peers, no matter if they are simply a child such as yourself.

Gain: +2 diplomacy. Gain trait: "Novice Speaker (1/10)". Further diplomacy learning unlocked.

Stewardship:

[x] Finances: Running a fief is hard work. You have to take into consideration things like taxes, incomes, guilds, and infrastructure when it comes to managing your finances. You will not always have a steward around to help you run your domain. That is why your family's steward, Kai Ryo, has been instructed to take time to teach you the basics of economics. Reward: Increased stewardship score. Increased understanding of economics. Required for unlocking later options. Chance of Success: 80/60/40%

Rolled: 56+10 (Genius trait)=66, Needed: 20

"So Young Master, do you now understand where all the money comes from and goes to?" Kai Ryo asks you.

After thinking for a bit, you respond, "I think so. The peasants who work our land pay us in grain. The merchants who sell in our territory pay us a portion of their proceeds The nobles who answer us pay us in coin as well as soldiers. And just like the nobles did for us, we do the same for the King and his bureaucrats in Kanyou."

After having deemed your succinct reply adequate, Kairyo declares your lessons over for the day.

For the past half a year Kairyo has been working hard to teach you the basics of how your family makes its money.

Some days he would show you the books which recorded your family's finances, while other times he would take you to see the workings of the city itself, with an armed guard of course.

All things considered, even though you may not be able to calculate your family's finances, you at least understand where it comes from.

Gained: +2 Stewardship. Trait, "Novice Steward (0/10)". Further stewardship learning unlocked.

Intrigue:

[x] Workings of the Underworld: While much of the politics and conflicts within the Warring States take place during the day, there are many things that take place in the shadows which influence those in the light. Your father's chief bodyguard Souma has been assigned to teach you of the workings of the underworlds, such as the names of the different assassin clans, as well as who to watch out for. Reward: Increased intrigue score. Increased knowledge of the underworld. Required to unlock more actions involving the underworld. Chance of Success: 80/60/40%

Rolled: 36+10 (Genius trait)=46, Needed: 20

As you walk through one of the shady places within the city, you lean over to ask Souma, "Why are we here again?"

With a quiet whisper of his own, Souma replies, "To show you where to go if you ever need some…under the table services."

After spending hours walking past bars, brothels, and other places of ill-repute, Souma decided to cut his losses after not finding any teaching moments.

You weren't surprised at the outcome, seeing as your entourage of bodyguards just screamed "noble" to all of those around.

So, once you were safely ensconced behind the walls of your estate again Souma decided to just tell you more about the underworld.

In the State of Qin there were five main clans of assassins that one could call on to eliminate an opponent. They were the Kakuriki, Kensen, Gouma, Shukyou, and Shiyuu. Of the five the one you were told to fear the most were the enigmatic Shiyuu.

When you asked Souma for the reason for that he replied, "Among the assassin clans, the Shiyuu are the ones who stand above the rest. The Shiyuu are not a true clan, more of a title really, for only one person at a time can bear the name of Shiyuu. There are stories I've heard about the exploits of the Shiyuu, all involved a lone assassin murdering their way through the targets assorted guards until the target was finally eliminated."

After leaving that cheery thought in your mind, Souma dismissed you after having determined that you'd gotten the gist of what he had told you.

Gained: +1 Intrigue. Further intrigue learning unlocked.

Piety:

[x] Philosophy: Many would think that in a time with seemingly endless conflict that there would be no time for deeper thought. Well those people would be wrong as hundreds of schools of thought have arisen teaching a myriad number of philosophies for which the people should live their lives. Your family believes that it is in your best interest for you to learn at least the basics of these philosophies so that do not make a fool of yourself in an intellectual discussion. Menshi, a scholar who studied at the famous Jixia Academy, has been tasked to teach you the basics involving the main schools of thought. Reward: Increased piety score. Learn basics of the main philosophies. Required for learning philosophy in greater depth. Chance of Success: 80/60/40%

Rolled: 71+10 (Genius trait)=81, Needed: 20

"In the State of Qin the prevailing philosophy is that of Legalism, while in the states of the central plains, which are Zhao, Wei, and Han, Confucianism is more common."

Once you finally finish reciting the answer to the question Menshi asked you about the different philosophies, you simply watch and wait for his reply.

With a look that is neither approving nor disapproving, he asks you, "What about Mohism and Taoism?"

After concentrating and trying to recall the information for a few moments, you answer, "Mohism is found mostly in Chu, while Taoism is uh…present across all of the states to some degree."

Menshi, in that stoic manner of his, simply replies, "Mostly correct, but that was more than I expected for a child your age."

Beaming at the first bit of praise he gave you, even if it may have been backhanded, you decide it counts as a win.

While you are leaving the study you use as a classroom, you can hear Menshi silently remark, "Hmm, if only the Jixia Academy were still around…he could have been counted amongst the greats."

Gained: +2 piety. Trait, "Novice Philosopher (1/10)". Further piety learning options unlocked.

Learning:

[x] Education: Within the many states, an education is only attainable for those with the wealth to afford it. While they do not expect you to become a scholar, your parents understand the importance of literacy, mathematics, and the arts. Which is why the scholar Menshi has been hired to instruct you in your lessons. Reward: Increase in learning score. Required for unlocking later learning/research options. Locked for 4 years. Chance of Success: 80/60/40%

Rolled: 84+10 (Genius trait)=94, Needed: 20

Unlike your other lessons, learning how to read was a whole new experience for you. Where before, you simply sat and listened to the information your instructor gave you, now you were expected to not only listen but watch and learn as well.

At first each character looked so complicated that you were not sure if you would ever remember what each of them was.

However, after Menshi's dedicated instruction, and your own intelligence, you were able to learn how to decipher the most common and simple characters.

You consider it a personal point of pride for having gained the ability to read even the most basic characters and scripts, even if you are just a child.

Gained: +2 Learning. Trait, "Novice Scholar (1/10)". Can now read basic texts.

Personal:

[x] Spend time with your family: Considering the busy lives your parents live, their time is very important. That is why opportunities to simply have fun with them are golden to you, for you never know how long this will last. Reward: Increased relationship with your parents. Chance of Success: 80/60/40%

Rolled: 88, Needed: 20

In one of the rare moments where neither of your parents were busy, and you weren't stuck doing lessons, your father and mother had decided to take you to one of the gardens within the city.

As you walked with your parents to the garden, you were struck by how different they looked now that they weren't in a role of some kind. They appeared kinder, and more relaxed to you, since the burden of dealing with the realities was put aside for now so that you could simply be a family.

Once you got to the park you did what all children your age did, played. You ran around and hid, with your father trying to find you. And when he did he always lifted you up in the air and spun you around. Gone was the stoic expression that he wore when he was teaching you or dealing with family business, and in its place was the jovial and carefree face that you loved.

With your mother you simply laid your head on her lap as she told you stories. Sometimes they were fantastical tales about the dawning of the world, while other times they were simply stories from her own past. You didn't really care, you were just happy to be there to hear her soft lilting voice again, with her gentle hands caressing your face.

But, all good things must come to an end. With the sun about to set on the horizon, you and your family walked home, with you hoping for another chance for moments like these.

AN: So here is the results for the first turn. One of the things I was thinking while doing this, aside from how good your rolls were, was that it might be better if I made the turns last for a full year rather than just a half. Both because of timing and statswise.

14 is the age which I expect you guys will be able to enter the battlefield and see the meat of the quest, so if things were half a year long it would take another 18 or so updates, not counting interludes, to get there. Furthermore the stats sheet would be blown way out of proportion by the time you actually got there. I figure I could just make some actions cost two turns in time instead to make up for this, but I thought it best to let you all decide.

Turn length:

[] Turns are worth a full year
[] Turns are worth half a year

This won't really change much for me either way, I just thought it would be best to ask what you thought would work best.

Also discussion is encouraged and any feedback you have would be appreciated. This is my first quest and I am always willing to hear feedback about what would make my writing better or the story more enjoyable.

Anyway, here is the update.

[X] Turns are worth a full year.

As stated, we have at the minimum 18 more updates if we were to continue at the current pace. Much as we want to have as much control as possible into building Riboku's foundation, this'll put a whole lot more strain on our author. Furthermore, given our current single digit age, even if we were presented with a lot of news about the outside world, there is very little we can actually do that would matter.

At least this way, we effectively cut down the minimum by half as well as give us more in the way of narratives for every update. Something I'm confident all of us wouldn't mind.

[X] Turns are worth half a year
So far you're doing great on the writing and what not I'd say, Honestly didn't expect this to be your first time considering how good it is so far.

[X] Turns are worth a full year.

In my opinion, this is better for both GM and players.

Edit: Jesus, I just realized we're only four years old!
