TreeQuest: Magitech (Riot Quest)

At this point, do the Traders and the Herbalist know about us?
They know something's up with the area.
  • Odd magical lumber.
  • Newton Village definitely know something and definitely want to keep a secret, but it doesn't seem to be evil or malicious. Implied to be a Wizard in the area?
  • There was a flash of light like lightning as the fight began; Traders might have seen it, though they would have been in their shelter and not gotten a good look at it.
  • Weird feeling like an earthquake during the battle. Some serious noise just outside the town.
  • Herbalist knows there's a very odd Tree in the Village.
  • Traders will be wondering if that Tree planted in the middle of the village was really there for the entire fight and they just missed it in the shadows??? (Assuming you put a few points into end-of-combat tidying.)
  • Everyone heard the Bees.
  • Traders will also have seen something odd running in and seemingly taking out a Hellhound. Hard to tell what, but something, and something small probably.
  • There's a massive burning patch over across the creek. And the Newton Villagers aren't worried about it, and there's far less burned Forest than expected, so... Wizards are weird, am I right?

So,
  1. Odd magical lumber.
  2. Newton Village definitely know something and definitely want to keep a secret, but it doesn't seem to be evil or malicious. Implied to be a Wizard in the area?
  3. There was a flash of light like lightning as the fight began; Traders might have seen it, though they would have been in their shelter and not gotten a good look at it.
  4. Weird feeling like an earthquake during the battle. Some serious noise just outside the town.
  5. Herbalist knows there's a very odd Tree in the Village.
  6. Traders will be wondering if that Tree planted in the middle of the village was really there for the entire fight and they just missed it in the shadows??? (Assuming you put a few points into end-of-combat tidying.)
  7. Everyone heard the Bees.
  8. Traders will also have seen something odd running in and seemingly taking out a Hellhound. Hard to tell what, but something, and something small probably.
  9. There's a massive burning patch over across the creek. And the Newton Villagers aren't worried about it, and there's far less burned Forest than expected, so... Wizards are weird, am I right?
1,2,3,4,8,9
Can easily be explained by the village being friends with a wizard that prefers to be left alone. (1,2)
A wizard that helped the village by attacking the attackers without revealing themselves. (3,4,8,9)
7
Could also come from the anonymous wizard helping.

Leaving only 5,6.
5 is a mystery to the Herbalist. But probably not something that allows her to put it all together if she buys the "shy wizard friend" story. Meaning we'd have time to decide what we do until we do something that leaks more information to her.

6, "was that tree there the entire fight?"...
Could easily be ignored by them going "*shrug* huh, must have overlooked it in the frenzy of suddenly being attacked in the night".

Edit:
But that list means they did not see our tree slapping one snake with another. Good. THAT would have lead to interesting questions.

5 + 6 could be explained as "tree-based magic" but that's uncomfortably close to the truth of "wizard trees."

Yeah, that explanation would be too close for comfort, imho.

If needed 6 could be explained as side effect of perception based magic used to confuse the attackers. (having a minor effect on bystanders that weren't meant as the target)

5 we should let be unless we have to say something about it. Just let her have her mystery.

Plus, the shy wizard friend story is quite close to the truth (shy wizard tree friends) without hinting at the truth, meaning we wouldn't be upsetting the Herbalist when/if she is told the truth.

Arthur Scrat is great and all, but everyone seems to miss that one of the tree literally slam a giant snake with another giant snake. I repeat, a tree grab and lift a giant snake then slam another giant snake. God, that was satisfying but too bad no villagers around to see that I think.

Which just goes to show you how big a deal the Arthur Scrat thing is.

It's kind of like when Infinity War came out, and with all the big crazy things that happened in the movie, Thanos throwing a moon at people somehow turned into a comparative afterthought.

That's how big and jam packed the movie was. Moon being thrown at people was relegated to "Oh and also that happened I guess".

Frankly, the fact that I now know we can actually already move around as much as we can has me really wanting to just straight up introduce myself to the Herbalist.

That I don't already have it at the top of my "things to do when the fight is over" list is entirely because I know how upset it would make a lot of people in this game if I just arbitrarily took it upon myself to pull a stunt like that.

And even then I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to do it anyway.

Would you be ok with us trying the "i want song" method for questioning when she is away from the traders (collecting or whatever) and then making a collective decision?

Maybe save playing around with hard to block or exstinguish hellfire during a time when we aren't facing swarms of flying enemies dive-bombing concentrations of valuable allies? It just feels like there is a lot of potential for literal friendly fire in this situation. Not much point in fending off the dire bats if their flaming corpses send villages houses up in flames.

You mean like as if we were in a Disney Princess movie?
Yes,
See this post.
We have Robintons confirmation that it is possible.
You're welcome to try! Definitely a difficult attempt, but also definitely possible.
...
I might be inclined to make the write-in trigger a communication option to prompt a song, rather than the write-in be the song itself.

And i think it would be the perfect use for our Focus and all Comms trees that want to play along, once the battle is over.

Did you just compare my latest update to Avengers: Infinity War?!?
Even obliquely!?!
:D :D :D

Also, more seriously: I see your point about Infinity War. So many Wham Moments that the poor moon got mostly forgotten.

For what it's worth, in this sort of situation, I will only let things go horribly wrong - in any way the Forest could have foreseen - in case of a proportionately severe critical failure.
And even then, the people of Newton Village would likely get a saving throw.

Are you sure that you want to use Focus for stuff that player trees are already doing?
If we use Focus to elder Shield and Empty trees we get permanent bonuses.
Shield Tree:
+3.7 auto successes to raise the shield.
+10% Bonus to raise the shield.
Empty Tree:
enough auto successes to use empty veil each turn (-33% dmg (expected value))
[X][Focus] Upgrade Shield Tree to Elder
[X][Focus] Upgrade Shield Tree to Elder x2

Huh. Was hoping trying to poison our water supply would wait until next attack. Guess we'll have to improvise.

This has been happening too many times…
