Byakuya Kuchiki acts the noble
--
A wild thing.
That was his first thought upon seeing the impetuous plum-purple haired servant. No matter the clothes or the hair styling, her mannerisms marked her as a wild thing that wandered from the outer districts to company she had no place to stand with. Her swiftness in drawing the sword - blood-lust, instinct, experience - had none of the hallmarks of refined tutelage or hours upon hours spent on perfecting a proven efficient form developed by master after master over millenia of combat. Her draw was a brutish, wild, ham-fisted.... and yet, effective draw. Experienced indeed, but little else.
Of course, a simple duel to the first blood would allow him to teach the young wild thing her place in the world and the limits of her ability, while forcing those in witness to acknowledge the superiority of House Kuchiki.
Simple, elegant, and covered multiple objectives. Altogether a flawless little plan, and all he had to do now was go through the motions.
As he walk the traditional dozen paces away, he could feel the building excitement in his...foe? No, enemies are people to be taken seriously, and no wild thing, no matter her experience, would equal the finest tutors for kenjutsu and the spiritual arts that money and connections could buy especially when combined with a perfected physique crafted over countless of hours of practicing said arts.
Byakuya Kuchiki counted himself among the most dangerous scions of the noble houses among his generation, and for a good reason. Only a fool, or someone with at least a few decades on him, would actually look forward to a duel.
A fool.... or a wild thing that didn't know better.
He waited passively, giving only a simple nod to indicate he was ready.
She responded with same and fell into an admirable degree of focus.
Of course it was in vain.
A simple flash-step, trivial to execute but entirely unexpected by the wild thing based on her panic and widening eyes. Her back, entirely open and defenseless. he could strike upon any number of lethal and painful locations, but this was an honest duel no matter how lopsided. The terms had been to first blood so killing the wild thing, especially given the obvious gap in skill and technique, would bring him shame.
Something moderately painful then, and with sufficient blood-vessels to make the victor obvious to even those who had never lifted a sword, but insufficient to cause permanent damage.
His sword neared the defenseless right shoulder, the strike carefully controlled to halt before hitting the bone but sufficient to pierce half of an inch or so.
She was still panicking, but her instincts were good. She was already beginning to turn, but it would be too late. A minor adjustment to the angle of his blade so that it would not tear off her muscle entirely due to her foolish decision but this duel was ove----
His blade was slowing down.
What.
HowWhy?
Reishi
He could see it now, interacting with his blade. Getting denser the closer it got to her skin.
An automatic defence? No, nothing had changed. Therefore she must have had this technique on ever since she walked into this event. A true always-on spiritual armor, that would likely take effort to deactivate.
His sword was already skidding off the layer of reishi, being turned along with her. A failed strike, despite her never seeing it coming.
A paranoid wild thing.
Suddenly, bright flashes and loud noises came from her hair! It reminded him of...fireworks, the one time farther had--
His eyes burned, but his willpower wasn't enough to prevent the inevitable, and he was forced to blink.
This was bad. His sword was out of position, the range of engagement was now controlled by his enemy, and he was momentarily down an important sense.
An underhanded paranoid wild thing.
Retreat was the only correct option, but before he could complete the flash-step away, pain blossomed in his arm.
That was that then.
Byakuya Kuchiki does not lose to untrained wild rabble of dirty tricks and with not even a drop of noble blood-
Byakuya Kuchiki also does not compound dishonor with further dishonor.
He would need a minute to calm down and re-asses.
Yes. Retreat. Re-asses the situation.
And dammit he might need to apologize to the wild thing once he got over his massive embarrassment.
And he would do it too, just you watch. Because that's how a noble should act.
