So what do you guys think of this pic for the protagonist?

If not that then there's also this pic I found.

I have already created a description for Vardanis, unfortunately, but I like the enthusiasm.
Vardanis of Chrace

Tall and broadly built by the accounting of Asur, of a height of six feet seven inches. Hair long and flowing, most often braided in loose patterns preferred by wood workers, and a blond the shade of yellow. Eyes of aquamarine. Clean shaven, as is the style of Chrace, in defiance of Sapherian norms.

(Also I fixed the typo in Karond Kar, sorry about that)

There is a reason the Asur are transitioning from Master-Apprentice to something more university like, if still not quite one-to-one.

In that case, it's up to us to make sure the university get's this knowledge.

[X] Plan The Red Conjurer

It did say this worked on all enchantments, not just Dawi enchantments, so this is useful no matter what.

As Asuryan represents balance, so too does it fit very well with Snowmane.

For respecting the balance between predator and prey is the difference between Kurnous and Anath Raema, Chrace and Karond Kar.

[X] Plan: Dark Dancer
-[X] Loec, the Dancer. Deep is the joy He brings, even in the Wild Places.
-[X] A mighty tree of black upon a field of blue. House Nightwood, one time protector of the grove of the Nightwood, a subspecies of the Starwood of Anhara Draconis that grew black as the night. The nascent Dark Elves, of course, sought to claim the stuff for themselves, for reasons both Aesthetic and practical alike. As they did with all other sources of that famed Starwood they burned the grove to the ground when they realized they would have none of it, and so the Dragon Ships were lost to your people, slowly fading, slowly dwindling, slowly passing as yet another wonder you were unworthy of. The disgrace hangs heavy over every head bearing the name, and you are not an exception; and one day you will rip into Druchii hide for what they have done to your family. But you live too, you live, and where there is life there is hope.

  • [X] Plan Lion-er King
    - [X] Asuryan, Emperor of the Heavens. Keeper of the balance, including between predator and prey.
    - [X] A lion's head in bright white upon a field of gold. House Snowmane has reason to be proud, beyond that of other Houses, and yet a shame lies upon you too. During the time of the Sundering, Your Great-Grandfather, Thinat, may his soul rest well, was the only member of the House Blackfang not to march at the side of Malekith and Morathi, instead turning upon his own kin, brother and sister, mother and father included, and driving them away without the beasts they sought to bring with them, leaving them much poorer as they fled to the cursed halls of Karond Kar, and then granted his own House sans the shame of treachery. Ever since, the two Houses have sought each other on the field of battle, and such battles are of a bewildering intensity. Shameful that history, yes, but better the shame of proved loyalty than the shame of treachery.

    [X] Plan The Red Conjurer
-[X] Hekarti, the Conjurer. She who sings Sorcery; not beloved, but respected, in Her proper place.
-[X] A red lion whose braided mane contains woven Khazalid Runes upon a field of verdant emerald, the sigil of House Ironwill. During the War of the Beard, as the might of Ulthuan was thrown against the barbaric rage of the Dwarfs, your ancestor Cyla learned how to shatter their Runic works, breaking the inferior art of the Runesmiths like so much glass against her excellence, her skill. Ever since you have worked to further refine that art she learned to survive, and now all enchanted works need fear the magic of House Ironwill. But the Dwarfs, of course, the Dwarfs do not forget, anymore than you will forget the burning of Kor Vanaeth or the slaughter of the Spirits or the burning of the forests or the murder of the Dragons, and for all they claim the Grudge was settled with their theft of the Phoenix Crown you know in their heart of hearts they will not forget this slight. And you are not so anodyne about the notion you will never again deal with the heartless creatures again.
[X] Plan Where the Wild Things are
-[X] Ladrielle, the Veiled. Patron of those who wander the wild places.
-[X] A lion's head in bright white upon a field of gold. House Snowmane has reason to be proud, beyond that of other Houses, and yet a shame lies upon you too. During the time of the Sundering, Your Great-Grandfather, Thinat, may his soul rest well, was the only member of the House Blackfang not to march at the side of Malekith and Morathi, instead turning upon his own kin, brother and sister, mother and father included, and driving them away without the beasts they sought to bring with them, leaving them much poorer as they fled to the cursed halls of Karond Karn, and then granted his own House sans the shame of treachery. Ever since, the two Houses have sought each other on the field of battle, and such battles are of a bewildering intensity. Shameful that history, yes, but better the shame of proved loyalty than the shame of treachery.

We have become the most powerful being of all. A Nerd who actually touched grass.

You kneel before the statue of Asuryan. "And let me keep balance where others lose it. Let me ensure that predator and prey do not stand opposed to each other but each keeps the natural world in check. Let me protect it, and all members of it, from those who would forget their place." Your hands tighten and the flesh goes white as you drive your manicured nails into your palms, anger and shame and loathing playing through you as you remember. "And if it please you, Creator, let me stand before the Lord Thayus and all the servants of Blackfang, and bring the fire that is your justice against them, for ravaging this world that you alike love as a fire. I beg that in time that shall enter your plan, that I may bring all accounts to balance, in the name of my Grandfather." You rise, kneel, and turn towards the other shrines, performing the duties as demanded.

You must not hate. You must not. Hate is beneath you, hate is lower than you, hate is the weapon of the Druchii. Hate is what has lowered their souls. But it would be so easy. It would be an ease beyond ease to do it; and that, that more than anything, is why you must not. Elves are obsessive, focused at the best of times and allowing that particular focus, that passion, to fest would not end well for anyone.

[Gain trait Ancient Embers: Others may believe the Dark Elves on the long, slow, path to extinction but you are neither so arrogant nor so indolent to believe it so; not while Asuryan's Fire, Asuryan's Wrath, burns within you. For actions opposing Druchii, for three AP invested gain one extra progress. In battle against Druchii or their allies or servants, +10 to all your rolls. +5 against Chaos in combat. Gain Focus: Preparing for War. Narrative effects]

You manage to finish just in time to meet the door dressed in your amber robe and sleeveless blue overcoat before your sister can begin to clobber the poor, hardworking wood. You do not, however, manage to get a word in edgewise before she has you wrapped in the pythons she calls arms, though at least unlike usual rather than wearing her armor she is in more proper clothes, a finely made dress of pure golden silk, with mundane runes of Eltharin woven along the bottom. "Baby brother! Oh how have you been, oh I know it hasn't been that long since we last saw each other, but you don't write nearly enough! Just think, you, a full mage!"

"Gulk!"

Your sister is a Silver Helm. Mostly it has been a source of pride and contentment not only to you but your entire family. When wandering beasts have threatened the woods of your people, she has answered the call. A tour of duty with the Long March, earned on the field of the tourney as a great honor to save the world and one of the few Asur alive who has stepped foot on Elthin Arvan and seen the old colonies that were once your people's pride. She has stared down the bleak marauders of Norsca, the "horselords" (pfft) of the Hung and the Kurgan, and the savage hatred of the beastmen in order to save the waystones; and by saving the Waystones, to save the world. Eyes bright as jewels, hair of the same shade of yellow blonde, and also tall and powerfully built, it is hardly a shock to anyone that the two of you are brother and sister.

She is also slowly strangling you as she hugs you, rambling on and on. Darkness creeps along the edges of your vision as the air is forced out of your lungs.

"Fhiron, please let him go before you manage to strangle him to death." And there your brother comes in to save you, and you can feel breath entering your body once again. You turn to him to see his face is also marked with a smile, if lesser than your sister's though that says little, considering it's her. "It is nice to see you, brother." A hawkeye, a leader of archers among Chrace's militia though of course the ax he has left at home and the pristine white clothing he wears says far more for his truest ambitions: to march among the White Lions who guard the Phoenix King. But if it is to be so, it shall be many years yet. Wordlessly you hug him, considerably more gently than your sister hugged you. His eyes are alike to hers and to yours, and he is tall and strong as well, but his hair is streaked all through with a dark red like fire and there is considerably more coolness to his gait, his movements, than to either your sister or to you.

"And let me look upon you, youth." You draw away a little, though keep his forearms clasped in yours. A considerably more dignified and proper look for two strapping young men of Ulthuan, though of course the Caledorians still murmur as they pass. Well so be it, let them murmur. You cannot find it within yourself to care what Dragon Princes without dragons have to think about how you treat your family after being gone from them for so long. "It is good to see you, Merel." You look around, hoping to see flashes of hair white with age but see no such thing.

You look to your brother and sister. "Are mother and father not here?"

"They were busy."

"With what?"

"Something has the beasts of the Annulli feeling even more aggressive than usual, and they've been coming down. So far nothing too big thank the gods but, more than you'd ever like to hear traipsing about the place, you understand?"

"Any idea of why?"

"No, not as yet. But," your sister says, "though the rest of the house could not be here they have prepared a great feast for you, for when you arrive back home!" She says it with so much of her usual cheer that you almost don't notice what she's trying to do.

Almost.

Pfft. Trying to comfort you as though you were a child. As though you need your parents like some newborn infant. Like you aren't an adult grown, and a mage of Ulthuan besides! The only thing you need is a good book and endless cosmic power, that's what you need.

You hear the bell that strikes the eighth hour, and your destiny. "Well then, shall we go?"

"Against all the darkness that the Enemy can conjure we shall send against them the light of magic." High Loremaster Nathea is stock still as she speaks, clad in the finery of her position: the Moon Staff of Lileath grasped in one hand, the goddess' visage exposed to the world. The Scroll of Hoeth, in her sash. The War Crown of Saphery upon her head. It is, after all, the first time this ceremony has been performed. It would not do for it to lack in any sense. Too she wears her bright blue and purple robe and cloak. "Do you accept this?"

"I vow that I shall defeat all darkness in the world." Multitudinous voices speak as one, making the vow, swearing the oath. Nathea walks, and sprinkles holy water on the kneeling crowd, who have already heard her speak for the past hour.

"But more, Hoeth insists that you should be a bright moon of knowledge in the dark night of ignorance. Shall it be so?"

"I will be the silverest moon in the darkest night."

"And that you shall be His blade of the knowledge of good and evil."

"I shall speak of that which is right and wrong."

"Then mere students I proclaim you no more."

"Vardanis," Estoria, one of the instructors, says, interrupting your conversation with the only family—with your siblings.

"Yes, Loremaster?"

"May we speak? Privately, I mean."

"It would be the pleasure of House Snowmane, of course." You can hardly lie here, after all. Merel and Fhiron bow slightly in acquiescence to the Loremaster, peeling off to speak to other mages. Hm, as though your House shall have need of any, then. Your bow is lower than theirs, of course: you are annoyed, not a barbarian. And he is an instructor and Loremaster aside.

"Thank you for your time, young one."

"I have plenty of it, of course."

"Of course. No studies today, I suppose."

If he weren't a thousand years older than you you'd arch your eyebrows. Yes, yes you had spent your time studying magic rather than trying to make friends or acquaintances or allies. Only good sense! The students of the Inner Kingdoms had a superiority complex even you didn't want to try and dispel and those of the other Outer Kingdoms had been too tightly connected for anybody else to enter and intrude on even if they wanted to. And the only other student out of Chrace—

SHE—

Was not an option. Never not ever not ever again. Tethia was a no go, not on your life are you getting your mane tangled in that particular combination of repression and superiority complex! You burned your hand once, not again. Spurn the House of Fireheart, that is your suggestion to anybody who asks and quite a damn few who didn't once you're deep enough in the wine.

So yes, you have made few friends at the Tower. But that hardly matters, since you have the skill to make new ones (if you needed them. Which you don't). "No. No studies today."

"Well, I respect your studious nature very much. It reminds me very much of my son, for all he lacks an interest in magic." Or a talent, according to certain rumors, but you are just politic enough not to mention them."I find that as I grow older I trust his judgment more and more, enough that I would have to consider anybody he thought was a friend my friend as well. And I am a good friend, you can simply ask around to hear that much."

"I imagine you must be," you say with half-and-half enthusiasm, "to finally convince the Judges to contribute to the White Tower."

"Yes, yes that was part of it. But please, do keep that in mind after you've gotten back home. Since even the best of mages only have so much time, and I would hate to hear you have wasted yours." He nods and then disappears, which is impressive considering the bright robes he's wearing.

"What was that about?" Your brother and sister reappear from the crowd, each holding a small glass of Sapherian wine (too light for your tastes but a damn sight better than the overrated swill that pours out of Caledor).

"Fairly certain he just offered to be my introduction to the other Loremasters but couldn't be too blunt about it considering the House's history but wanted to be sure I understood even at the risk of making it obvious to anybody else listening," you say in your most noncommittal voice in the old pidgin of Tor Vernath, one of the few secrets the Chracians have managed to keep from the rest of the kingdoms.

"What?"

"Why would he offer that to you?"

"Thank you baby brother, it's nice to know somebody has so much faith in me. But he's Sapherian, they're all a little strange." You shrug. "Could be she wants me to introduce her to the Beastwalkers. Could be he's just looking for untapped talent rather than running to the traditional houses. Could just be that for all I wasn't top of the class, I was far from the bottom and he thought I had the stuff. Who knows?"

And then you feel it somewhere deep in your soul, the particular maelstrom of Azyr and Aqshy that only one presence has ever, ever carried, one you've taken great efforts to avoid for as long as you can ever since you finally left Chrace in the first place.

Asuryan, Creator, why have you forsaken me?

"May we speak?" A voice, not hers thankfully, cuts in and puts down your panic.

"Yes it would be my pleasure! Haha, oh, uh, you two please if you-know-who starts asking around about me please, tell her I need to speak to my near dear friend—"

"Ylith."

"Ylith for the next long while." They head off, leaving you with—

Oh Cadai's touch. Ylithl. Those robes. Pure Nagarythe for an accent.

This is Ylith! The Archmages are a considerably looser group than the Loremasters on account that rather than all being clergy of Hoeth, they constitute any sufficiently skilled mage outside of that body, likely though not necessarily taught at the White Tower: anything from someone who would rather only study Qaysh, to those either not fit to, or undesiring of, bearing a blade, to sufficiently skilled masters of the other kingdom's traditions, to those who follow another god and don't want to try and balance the call between both of them, to those too martially inclined for the path of a Loremaster.

But you'd bet she could call more than a damn few favors if she had a mind for it. "Dare I ask what that was about?"

"Chrace is apparently not half as far away as I'd like."

"Quite. Very well, I'll make this brief and cut to the point. In a recent raid, there were a number of treasures stolen back from the traitors, among them certain enchanted objects. I would ask you to help catalog and if possible reactivate a few of the more trifling matters, considering your own history with the traitors and that you have, according to your teachers, more than some promise."

"I will consider it, Lady Ylith, thank you."

She nods and then looks back. "You may wish to exit out of the back within the next five minutes, if you're running from who I think you're running from."

"Thank you once more!"

And with that you prepare for the journey home.

How this Works: You have five (5) AP to invest into the following options howsoever you desire.

Requests & Commissions

[] The Loremaster's Blade: The Loremaster Estoral, a high ranking member of the Loremasters if not the highest, has requested you forge a two-handed sword for his son; you are apparently not the only one receiving such a request, but it has hardly been handed out to every Tharain, Darain, and Marain either. This will act as an introduction to the Loremasters. (0/1 Progress, may Overflow, will receive at least +1 Standing and +10 Favors with Loremasters of Hoeth, tutorial crafting turn)

[] The Archmage's Trove: The Archmage Ylith has requested that you help restore certain treasures taken from the Druchii after they were killed during a raid on the Shadowlands. To do this would be to prove you are of a baseline competence, at least, as well as trustworthy in the face of Druchii and of the darkness. (0/1 Progress, may Overflow, will receive at least +1 Standing and +10 Favors with Archmages, Procs Ancient Embers, soothes Focus)

[] Monsters of the Annulii: Beasts of the Annulii Mountains have begun raiding your House's lands. Nothing too major, not chimeras or manticores as yet but your parents have requested you look into it, by examining the corpses of some beasts they've slain. It's probably nothing. Probably. (0/3, Gain House Snowmane Standing, Gain House Snowmane Favors, Gain Chrace Standing, Gain Chrace Favors, Procs Beastly Mind, May overflow)

Research & Development

[] Stellar Seeker: To be reduced to primal Elementalism like some…fumbling child! It is a disgrace and an embarrassment and you will tolerate it no longer! You will grow to understand the Heavens, to fully understand Azyr, even if you have to forge the damn telescope and grind the damn glass yourself! (0/3 Progress, may Overflow, unlocks Cardinal Magical Comprehension of Azyr, unlocks further developing comprehension for other winds, Activates Sky Seeker)

[] The Art of the Blade: To be a Loremaster, one must master the sword, at the least a bastard sword though truly mighty two-handed blades that require the grip of both are growing more and more popular. Furthermore you must forge your own blade. While it is a sign that one desires to become a Loremaster, it is hardly unknown for others to learn their art. (0/3, currently locked thanks to lacking standing and favors, does not lock you into the path of the Loremaster, is however a step on it)

[] The Art of Two: To properly mingle together two Winds is an even more arduous task than merely to develop in such a way that you can wield any of the eight Winds. You can theoretically mingle together two neighboring Winds, such as Ghur and Hysh, for their mindsets are close enough; however two oppositional or orthogonal Winds evade you as yet. The Archmages know the secret, though so do many Loremasters for all they are more likely to study the Eight Winds separately. (0/3, currently locked thanks to lacking standing and favors, does not lock you onto the path of the Archmage, is however a step on it)
Social

(Pick 1, does not require an investment in AP)

[] You speak to Merel about home, since he has been there more often
[] You speak to Fhiron about the outside world, and the Long March
[] Tethia manages to pin you down during the journey back to Chrace, your caravan and hers having traveled together for safety.

High Elf Culture Corner-The Long March: One of the few Pan-Ulthuan institutions that exist, it is an armed host including Loremaster, Archmages, and common soldiery from each Kingdom traveling to ensure the Waystones are in proper order.

(Credit to @Imrix for the Long March)

Moratorium for roughly twelve hours, I'm setting it up proper now.

Hmmm, some really cool stuff here.

I assume you're updating the mechanics so we know the importance and meaning of some of this stuff?

So... if I understand this right we can drop 3 actions in this and get a fourth, which would be overflow three times over, but on the other hand it would get us a goodly amount of favor and standing as well as making use of our increased focus. If we do this though we would only ave two other actions to dump into other things.

If we do this I think both our outher actions should be self-improvement to maintain some balance

[] Monsters of the Annulii: Beasts of the Annulii Mountains have begun raiding your House's lands. Nothing too major, not chimeras or manticores as yet but your parents have requested you look into it, by examining the corpses of some beasts they've slain. It's probably nothing. Probably. (0/3, Gain House Snowmane Standing, Gain House Snowmane Favors, Gain Chrace Standing, Gain Chrace Favors, Procs Beastly Mind)
Hmm, 3 actions would proc it but there's no mention of Overflow possibility, so it would be a waste.

If we only choose one, probably favor this given our speciality.

Hm, Voikirium.

1. How long are turns? A decade?
2. Do any of these requests have time limits? I'd presume any such time limits would be soft ones merely implied or as part of cultural subtext but Vardanis should still know them.

Regardless, I currently favor a turn-one three AP investment into The Archmage's Trove to proc our trait and a two AP investment into Stellar Seeker balancing networking plus opening up future opportunities with self-improvement. Then, next turn we can dedicate one AP to The Loremaster's Blade since it doesn't proc traits, one AP to Stellar Seeker to finish that up, and three AP to Monsters of the Annulii to proc our trait.

The second turn focuses less on self-improvement but we still finish up a project there well getting all our commissions done unlocking both the Loremaster as well as Archmage routes to explore at our leisure.

Until we know what Beastly Mind does, Can't decide whether to put Three Actions in Annulii mountains or in Archmages's trove. But unless we are going Loremaster route, I'd say putting the rest in Stellar Seeker would be best.

Again, depends on how Beastly Mind procs. If it is 2+1, for example, we prolly can complete both Annulii Mountains and Archmages Trove this turn. Completing stuff like this earlier would be a good boost, I think.
