Prologue: Chapter VII

Captain's Log, Stardate 25151.2, USS Stargazer, Captain Maryam Ajam
(EC Excelsior, Gabriel Expanse)

I have dispatched Commander Losue to escourt Ambassador na'Threx to Lydantic station so that we can negotiate peaceful passage past Dylaarian space.

-

Ambassador Sharen na'Threx steps out of Stargazer's transporter confinement beam smiling, and hops off the pad towards the waiting Dylaarians, leaving Commander Losue in his metaphorical dust.

As his feet hit the floor he bows slightly and spins around on his heels, his hands held high in the air, palms facing upwards. This little dance is met with obvious delight by the waiting Dylaarians. The Dylaarians themselves being small, almost gecko-like, lizardlike bipeds standing between a meter and a quarter and a meter and a half and, covered in shining scales, and wearing various robes.

The Federation Ambassador straightens up and adjusts his now ruffled clothing, "Greetings on behalf of the Kadeshi Homeward Fleet. I am Ambassador Sharen na'Threx, and this"he gestures to Commander Losue behind him, "Commander Losue of Stargazer. I am very pleased that you've agreed to speak with us."

Commander Losue steps down next to the shorter Andorian man and tries his own version of the greeting dance and fails miserably. Also much to the delight of the waiting Dylaarians who cover their mouths and chitter in amusement.

A taller Dylaarian, about a meter and a half in height, with glittering scales and a loose gauzy white robe steps in front of the Andorian Ambassador and does her own version of the little dance that Sharen had just completed. Though, a much smoother and more natural one, the hem of her gauzy covering spinning up into the air slightly as she does her greeting.

"Hello Ambassador na'Threx. I am Slis Clan Representative Issul, the commander of this station. We are pleased to have you."

There are some other small pleasantries,. After the lizard chittering dies down down the two men are led through the corridors of Lydantic station, Losue constantly bobbing his head to avoid light fixtures as they go. Clan Representative Issul gives them a brief tour as they walk, pointing out doors that enter to cargo bays, doors that enter to private rooms, doors that exit to science labs, doors that enter into common areas, and, on one memorable occasion, pointing out the door that enters into their station hospital.

Eventually they come to the door that leads to a conference room, and for a change of pace enter into it. Losue just narrowly missing cracking his head on the frame, merely ruffling his hair instead.

The two men sit at a short triangular table across from Issul and another Dylaarian who is introduced as "Station Security Representative Vlasic". He's shorter than Issue by a couple decimeters, but has much brighter scales, and is wearing a loosely fitted woven armour.

"My apologies Commander," says Issul to Losue as he pats his hair back down, "I am afraid this station wasn't design with other species in mind."

"Much to Cardassian consternation." titters Vlasic into his hand, "We offered to start issuing them safety helmets when they visited." he continues his chittering, Issul joining him, "But they declined"

"Ah, no worries, I'm a good dancer, I'm used to bobbing and weaving." says Losue casually, waving one hand in the air, "Think nothing of it."

Issul chitters at him briefly, before pulling out a small data tablet, "Ambassador, Commander, may I get you anything before we start? We have a wide variety of drinks and teas from both the Cardassians, their friends, and Federation space."

Tazam exchanges a glance with Sharen, then shrugs, "You know what? I'd take something that you recommend from Cardassian space. I don't know if I'll ever get another chance to try something from the Union."

Slis chitters and selects something on her tablet, "And you Ambassador?"

"I think I'll do the same as young Taz here. Give me your finest hot drink that I've almost certainly never had."

Issul nods and pokes her tablet again, "Your drinks will be here shortly. If you would care to begin?"

na'Threx opens his mouth to begin negotiations but Vlasic beats him to the punch speaking very quickly as he does so, "Sothisgiantship? Whyisithere? Wherediditcomefrom? Whereareyougoing? Reallygoingdeepspaceisawierdplacetogo? IsittruethattheKadeshiareainheritorclanoftheancients?"

Issul pulls at Vlasic's sleeve, quieting the smaller Dylaarian, "My apologies, gentlemen."

"No, as a Starfleet officer I understand curiosity. It's an admirable trait." Says Commander Losue with a broad smile, he leans forward in his chair, "Well…. YoumeantheprideofKadesh? ItcamefromtheRomulanNeutralZone. We'regoingtofindtheKadeshibirthworld. Actuallyyestheirbirthworldbutdeepspacesiprettycoolallonitsown. AsfarasweknowtheKadeshiweremovedbytheprecursosrsandleftwithanceinttechnology."

Vlasic chitters in delight from behind a hand raised to his mouth, "Delightful!"

There's a brief ding, and the door behind them opens to admit another short Dylaarian man with a drinks tray which he sets on the table with a small chittering laugh behind his hand before withdrawing.

Ambassador reaches out to try his drink, a steaming hot cup of something thick and brown. He tilts his head slightly as he takes a drink.

Issul, Vlasic, and Losue watch him considering the drink in his mouth for a moment before he swallows goes back for another sip.

"Good," he pronounces after the third sip. He looks at Losue, "It's… hmm, imagine a Human Rootbeer, but without carbonation. But thicker and warmer. Very sweet," he says as he goes back for another sip.

"That one's from Aeidi Prime. It's Dark Barkroot concentrate." Issue titters from behind her hand, "Hot! Just the way I like it."

While na'Threx is going back for his next sip, Losue tries his first from a cup of something that looks pleasingly like a normal tea. Crumbled leaves of some sort in water that now had a garnet-red hue.

Sadly the tea isn't as pleasingly non-offensive as it looks, and there's thunk as Losue puts the mug back down on the table, "That's an interesting taste." he says after a couple of moments of recomposing his expression, "It has a kick to it. Spicy."

Vlasic titters, "Red leaf tea. It's a Cardassian favorite!"

"Ah. It certainly has a … commanding presence. No wonder they enjoy it."

The two Dylaarians titter laughter from behind hands daintily raised to their faces.

"May I try a sip Commander?" asks the Ambassador, a bushy eyebrow raised.

Losue pushes the mug slightly towards him, and na'Threx takes a hearty sip.

"Ahh!" he says, lowering the glass, "Delicious. This reminds me of my time on Kronos. Those Klingons also love their food to have a kick!" He leans forwards conspiratorialyl, "Or even a squirm"

The Dylaarians share his amusement as they sips from their own mugs.

"They have a tea ceremony where you recite poetry at each other. But," he holds up his finger and points at the cup, "the tea is made from a sort of neurotoxin fatal to most species without a redundant nervous and circulatory system. Apparently it's to show that tea, like death, is an experience best shared." The old Andorian smiles and lifts a small hypospray from a pocket where it had been concealed, "That's where I learned to make sure that I never left the embassy without a broad spectrum panacea just in case a Klingon wanted to share tea and poetry with me."

"I've also learned," he says as he watches his Orion companion take another exploratory sip of the Red Leaf tea, "That things we initially think are repulsive are well worth it if we just have an open mind and give them a chance."

Captain's Log, Stardate 25151.8, USS Stargazer, Captain Maryam Ajam
(EX Excelsior, Gabriel Expanse)

The Dylaarians have proved remarkably easy to negotiate with. Either that or seeing the Pride of Kadesh arrive in system has taken the starch out of them. In any event, for a small barter in resources, we will be back on our way.

Personal Log
(Human, Female)

I understand that part of the resource cost also bought Pride of Kadesh a pair of cargo holds full of drinks from across the Cardassian Union and the Ashalla Pact.

Commander Losue has asked me to try this 'Red Leaf Tea' that he's been raving about to everyone who stands still near him for more than thirty seconds.

Captain's Log, Stardate 25240.2, USS Stargazer, Captain Maryam Ajam
(EC Excelsior, Deep Space)

The Pride of Kadesh is stopping by an asteroid belt to collect some new resources. The Federation Engineering ships are helping to build waystation platforms according to Kadeshi patterns to help improve harvesting speed.

Their ability to recover the top layers of resources is startling, I have to say that. With the new infusion, the Kadesh has also begun work on a heavy cruiser in its cavernous dock. It should be done next month.

-

Maryam Ajam, her husband Raelin, and their daughter Ayishah, step out into the clearing in the middle of Pride of Kadesh's main park. Maryam has brought her family to Pride of Kadesh's promenade to spend an afternoon enjoying her favorite place on the massive vessel.

Maryam Ajam has a set of tubes under one arm and is holding Ayishah's small dusky-blue hand in the other. On her daughter's other side Raelin is also holding Ayishah's hand, and is carrying a large wicker basket with his other hand.

"Wow, you weren't kidding Mar," says Raelin as he and Ayishah approach the small pool that lies in the middle of a clearing, surrounded by Kadeshi trees and bushes, a place which feels like its own small world green and red world.

Maryam just smiles as he lets go of her daughter's hand and turns her attention to the collection of tubes under her arm. A collection which, in a flurry of clicks and whirrs, she rapidly assembles into an easel, pulling out and unravelling a canvas from one of the tubes which she places on the easel.

"I see that you really did decide to bring an easel with you this time Captain." comes the voice of Rachel Sarjan.

Raelin starts and looks around for the origin of the voice, and little Ayishah is transfixed by the image of Sarjan projected into the water, looking between the 'reflection' and where Rachel would be if the image truly was her reflection.

Maryam chuckles, "Well, I actually wanted to practice my painting skills while we were having this family outing." she gestures to the wicker basket that Raelin has just settled down, "I would offer you sandwiches, but…" she trails off with an awkward laugh.

"My apologies for interrupting, Captain," says Sarjan as Ayishah slowly reaches out a hand to touch her reflection in the water, "I just wanted to inform you that we've finished our mining timetable and we should have completed our resourcing operations in thirty eight Earth Hours." Sarjan has moved her image, away from the ripples caused by Ayishah.

Ayishah runs around the edge of the pool and slaps the water where the new image has appeared, giggling furiously.

"Is this-" Starts Raelin, looking upwards towards the ceiling of the promenade deck, vaguely in the direction of where Rachel Sarjan is immersed in a tank full of life support equipment and cybernetic links, the things that keep her alive and 'plugged in' to the hull of Pride of Kadesh.

"Don't worry about me Knight-Captain." comes Sarjan's voice, as her image moves to another place on the surface of the water, the image sticking out it's tongue at Ayishah as the small girl raises her hand to smack the water again.

The image vanishes and reappears slightly farther away, much to Ayishah's increasingly vocal delight.

Nearer to Ajam, on her canvas appears another image of the Kadeshi woman.

"What do you know, this does work." Says Ajam, the corner of her mouth quirking upwards into a wry smile. Behind her a laughing Ayishah chases after another projection, Raelin trailing after her, a bemused grin on his face.

"It would appear so Captain. Please extend my thanks to your crew. Especially your science officer. They've enabled us to complete our resourcing operations much sooner than we had estimated."

Maryam nods appreciatively, "I'll pass that along, I'm sure that Lieutenant-Commander-

"Sepik is a very efficient officer, and appears to understand his instruments well." says Sarjan, "He's also somewhat physically imposing for a science officer."

"That he is. He's an interesting Vulcan, I think he's in Stargazer's gym more often than any other member of my crew. Always in there lifting." Ajam shrugs, "He says that one must train their body as much as they train their mind.

Sarjan's image appears inquisitive, "Models?"

"Yes. Marren spends his spare time building a lot of ship models, right down to their interior decks. You can actually pull them apart and see little figures inside, and the lighting works and everything. He uses batteries as a miniature warp core."

Maryam lowers her voice conspiratorial, "I hear that back when he was in Starfleet Intelligence, he would actually get together with the Office of Naval Architecture and build just those sorts of intricate digital models of Cardassian, Romulan, and Klingon ships so that we had an idea of how the layouts worked spatially. And I'm pretty certain that a couple of the Cardassian Union models in his quarters were brought over from T'Mir with him from back when she was intercepting Cardassian comms."

[ ] [SCI] Write In. Same rules as the last vote (see below) with 9 points, same as the above candidates.
You may vote for submitted write in plan option. A proper write in will have a brief description like that of the other officers above, as well as a name and preferred pronouns.

Keep in mind that Stargazer's launch is in 2312. So you will need to bear in mind species that would be reasonably present in Starfleet at this time. Though I am prepared to make wide allowances due to the fact that people can travel in space and the Federation has a pretty wide open immigration policy. seamstresses welcome

Once the description is written, distribute 9 SPICE points between the five categories.

Finally, go ahead and suggest the sort of Merit that you think would apply to the character. I will use my judgement to assign a specific effect once the vote is completed

I reserve the right to veto vote in options that are… terrible (Because write ins are always a terrible risk in any quest.)

I will also be leaving in write in options for the rest of the prologue until Stargazer's senior officer complement is filled out, so don't worry if your proposal doesn't make the Science Officer slot. There will be other chances.

Gotta have S:4 for the science officer. But which to pick...I really like them both, RP wise. The Caldonian would be neat for diversity of voices, though he seems to be the least...developed? of the capsule bios. And mister mini builder is near and dear to my heart (I love custom built minis). They both have good bonuses, too. More XP is always welcome...but I think I'm going to have to tip my vote to the former spook. In the main, we can gain a lot of useful ship design knowledge from instant scanning. Could be pretty useful in this game, and when we get home, Starfleet could always use the data he brings back.

Horta are extremely rare in Starfleet as a minor race, but due to their physiology, they have a very exotic mindview, perfect for a different opinion when facing the very unknown.

I did say I was going to try to vote a Horta in...

[Honed Body and Mind] +1C and +1S on away team missions that involve combat

...I have questions. Is "+1S" equivalent to Sepik having S:4 for mission resolution? Is it better? We don't have any idea how these stats relate to succeeding or failing a mission. I know in TBG's system a +1C and +1S are adding a +1 to the die roll, but for Distant Stars I can only guess at how important the difference of S:4 is over S:3 is. This ability seems really lackluster and situational, given what we know from the other quest.

More XP is a far better long-term gain than imediately knowing the exact ship stats of other ships. We're certain to have Hard S tests far more frequently than we'll make First contact and trigger Hanna Valentine's trait. Meanwhile, in TBG while it takes ages for the intel system to figure out complete ship stats, but when one of our ships actually ship-to-ship encounters a new vessel we get a partial and often good-enough estimate of their stats. Given how long the trip is, any decent XP boost is very valuable.

Ship models and an excellent bonus? Yes please

To be honest, I'm with @Derpmind about this bonus. It's not that strong. It's reliant on meeting the same ship time and again to be useful, and it's only somewhat better than what we'd already be getting.
On the other hand, we'll always need talented crew (as in Yanit Bat)... and we'll always need resources (as in Jillian Yarborough's likely merit). Plus, Maryam's the only I3 character so far, and someone's gotta GM the Stargazer's roleplaying game group.
