Or Minoru Kagenou reincarnated as a girl.
Prologue

Levelgap

Wielder of Destruction
Hello, this is Levelgap, and welcome to another fanfic that I am making. This time, it's not Worm.

This is a fanfic from the series called "To Be A Power In The Shadows" or "The Eminence in Shadow" on the Light Novel version.

This story, while retaining most of the setting and characters of the series, will also incorporate new elements, plots, and characters.

I hope you have fun reading this!~

Since I was a child, I always admired characters who moves within the shadows. They aren't the protagonist, nor the antagonist of the story. They can be considered a really important character who will barely appear on the whole series, but their presence itself are so mysterious and relevant to the overarching and jumbled arc of the characters.

I admired them so much that I pursued to be just like them. It's not just a fleeting admiration that will vanish when I get older. I truly tried to go to heights that will put me in the same pedestal as the shadowbrokers I admired.

I trained in different martial arts, used all the options to strengthen my body and mind, and even goes as far as doing live and dangerous battles against the crooks of our society. I didn't stop my training regardless where I am. Even if I'm at school, at my home, or even my bathroom, I continue my training to one day surpass everything this world can throw at me.

Still, I can't really runaway from a reality. Regardless of how skilled I am at martial arts, I will easily crumble with a shot of a bullet. If I fought against a trained military, I think I might pull it off, but if there are a squad of them, then I'm toast.

And even if I somehow defeated all of them, there is still the greatest weapon that humanity have made.

Nuclear Power!

Regardless of training, I am still a human. I'm just a being of flesh and blood. I will be vaporized in an instant if something like that hits me.

Does a Power in the Shadow dies by a mere nuclear bomb? Of course not!

What kind of a third rate hidden character they are if they just die because someone drops a bomb on top of their head?

No, I want to be the absolute strongest, the one that won't shame my image of a shadowbroker!

But I can't run away from reality and deny the fact that it is impossible to achieve with training alone. So, I tried to find some way to even the odds. After a lot of research and time, I finally came to a conclusion.

Magic!

The most mysterious and profound thing humanity fantasizes. It is something that you only heard about novels or games in this day and age.

It is so mysterious because no one knows what it can really do. Everything is just a theory, and it's really unrealistic if you think rationally.

But it's the only thing I can hold onto. I was hoping on the impossible odds that magic truly exist.

I tried to prove it's existence myself by training myself in different ways. Changing religion, going on mental training, traveling to the rumored power spots, even going as far as doing every superstitions around the world. I tried everything just to acquire this mysterious power known as magic.

I tried everything, and I think after doing this for a long time I am actually getting it.

Like, I can see the stars around me. The whole world is spinning and I think I am feeling rather hot despite the cold breeze of the night hitting my naked body.

I might have been fasting for a few weeks now, and have just spent all day naked in the middle of nowhere and hitting my head multiple times on the tree until it bleeds, but I'm sure whatever I am feeling is the prelude to the magic that I sought out.

I have been doing this for a whole day now, so I think I should wrap this up and go back home. I know I am getting closer, I just needed to think of a more efficient way to get to this heightened sense.

Hm? Light.....?

I can see two orbs of light slowly getting closer to me. My heart beats faster in excitement as I push my feet to move closer to it.

Magic! It's magic!

Finally, I can acquire the magic I am looking f--!?

Next thing I know, I woke up looking up at the face of an unknown beauty. Along with it is a rather cool-looking middle-aged guy besides her, and on the periphery of my vision are some people that obviously look like those maids I usually see on TV.

It seems like I transmigrated to this world after achieving magic. I think I heard the sounds of honking when those two orbs of light approaches me, but it doesn't really matter.

I knew my training is a success as I can see these wispy orbs of light surrounding everyone here. These light seems to be magic. I can also feel it within my body, and I can control it easily.

I don't know why I turned into a baby, but it doesn't really matter. I have magic now!

In fact, this is a great opportunity. A toddler have all the time in the world. Which means I can train my body to the fullest without thinking about anything. Controlling this magic and refining it is my first thing I need to do. After that, I just have to find all the uses of this magic, and acquire the power to become a true Shadow Eminence!

Hahahaha! I feel so elated!

..... Ah.... I just pooped....

You know, I think I should have check things first before being so excited at my own imagination.

I still dream of being an Eminence in Shadow, but truly. It's pretty hard to think of anything when there is one crucial thing that I just discovered now.

Most of the shadowbroker I know are cool and amazing guys. They are these imposing and mysterious characters who knows everything, and are so strong despite only being seen at least one or two chapter on the whole series.

I barely knew a female shadowbroker, so I don't know what to do about it.

Mostly, because apparently I discovered I am a girl!

Hope you find this satisfactory, and sorry for making another story without finishing the others T_T

Chapter 1: Mob on the Day/Shadowbroker on the Night
So how to be an Eminence in Shadow as a girl?

I've watched a lot of stories that involves one or two hidden powers, but it's rare for a girl to be the mastermind. At most, I usually see them as a really good assistant to the final boss, or a hidden love interest.

Which is bad because that still gives a "Main Character" vibe instead of a "Powerful being in the background" atmosphere!

I don't want to be a second rate shadowbroker. My ideal is someone far more grander than that!

I have learned everything I have to know to become a Power in the Shadows, but only as a guy. I haven't researched anything from the girl's side because I thought that wasn't relevant to me.

Who would have thought that this kind of development will occur!?

Right, I should try and research this thing about how to be a perfect female shadow eminence. I can't really just do my own interpretation as a male when I am a girl right now. I'll just look like a tryhard, and it won't be a topnotch product.

I only accept the best for my ideal! There is no compromise!

So it's been ten years since I transmigrated to this world. Since then I have been practicing not just my whole body, but also my acts to be the greatest shadow eminence.

Due to that, I am actually quite strong that anyone can see it..... not!

I can't be called a hidden character if I just brag how strong I am. That defeats the purpose of being a hidden power in the background!

So in front of the world, I act as the unremarkable daughter of a Baron. All my talents are average, and my academics are below average. It's to the point that my family in this world ignores me.

Actually, that last part is what I truly hope for. Sadly it can't happen because I'm the only daughter of this house. As the only daughter, I'm the one who will succeed my father when the time comes.

Which is bad because being a lord of the house is not ideal for my persona as a normal, unremarkable girl!

Why didn't I have any elder sibling? At least give me a brother, or a sister even!

Well, despite the existence of magic, nothing in this world is fair so whatever.

Anyway, being the future Lady of the house, people just can't stop looking at me. I'm really troubled because it cuts into my time of training.

Despite trying to show unremarkable feats and below average capabilities, these people try their hard to bother me for "The betterment of my future".

Also, my mother is always fussy about my wellbeing. Normally that would be a good thing because a parent naturally worries about their child. Though for me it's just annoying.

"Arisa, I told you to take care of your appearance!" Once again I can hear her chiding me on the distance as she get closer to me. Walking with an exasperated sigh.

This is my Mother, and her name is Martha Frelldyll. As for me, I am named Arisa Frelldyll.

If I have to explain how she looks like, she have long purple hair and violet eyes. As for her appearance, you can say she looks like a former heroine from a prequel series of a fantasy light novel.

Basically, she is a Named Character.

And that named character is my Mother.

"What a waste. You have a good appearance too.... here, come over." She ushered me closer to her and I can only obey her.

Look, I could just ignore her and go on my way, but that act wasn't unremarkable. In fact, being rebellious to my parents will just make me conspicuous. Which will put me on the pedestal.

And that wasn't how a female mob works!

I might be assuming things here, but because I don't have any knowledge about the girl's side of mob-ness, so I am just copying those female background characters that usually hangs around the female protagonist.

Which means I have to act like a proper girl, who only have a normal aspiration to life, and will live in the background as a decoration on the side of the road.

That's it! To truly become inconspicuous to the public, I must act like a normal girl!

To be a normal girl in the eyes of the crowd, I will have to be obedient to my parents.

As for my looks, yes, I look unremarkable. I'm not running away from reality.

Even if I inherited my mother's purple hair, and my father's yellow eyes, I'm totally as normal as it gets!

So please.... stop putting me on the main screen, dammit!

"There there, now you look proper at least...." My mother is smiling, and I was also giving back a smile of my own, but I definitely want to run away from her.

This is turning into a slice of life genre, and I feel like I am becoming a sub character.

Nope. I'll have to look for more ways to become very unremarkable to their eyes. I hope they will stop trying to fix my appearance.

You know what's cool for a hidden power in the background?

For me, it's them actually being a part of the background for the whole series. Like they were seen here and there, but the protagonist and even the antagonist doesn't know that they were an integral part to the plot.

I am trying to blend in the background of those main characters. Well, there are no main character candidates on our backwater territory, but that's besides the point.

I am failing actually. My mother with her former heroine aura is pulling me out of the background. Though they are not expecting much of me, so I think I am somewhat succeeding?

Anyway, let's set that aside for now.

In the middle of the night, I just saw a group of bandits on a ruined village. They are huddled together on the campfire and they seem to be talking about something funny.

This backwater territory, and the nearby territories surrounding here are actually a hive of scum and villainy. There are a lot of slavers, bandits, thieves, and nutcases who are squatting on these regions.

Normally, that's worrying. The public order is in chaos, and going outside the town walls are dangerous due to them. There is also the existence of monsters, so that added to the negatives.

For me though, it's anything but bad. Bandits? Thieves? Criminals?

All of them are just incomes waiting to fall on my lap. I would actually prefer if every patch of grass are bandit camps.

As someone who wants to be a shadowbroker, I need a lot of capital. Can't really just be called a hidden power if I don't have anything in my name.

The money I got from my family is not enough. I need a lot of capital to increase my eminence in shadow collection.

So that's why.... give me what is yours!

"Huh.... who the hell!?"

Jumping out of the roof I am standing awhile ago, I landed in front of them and grinned.

"Hyahaa! Give me all your riches!"

"The hell, who is this brat!?"

I can see them standing up, and scrambling to get their weapons. I let them be.

I actually need test my new prototype suit.

Currently, I am wearing a hooded black suit that covers most of my body. It have the tailcoat, and anything that makes me look so cool.

This outfit is made from a special material that no one in this world can expect is actually useful.

You see, magic can bring a lot of things on the table. They can increase your physical capabilities to an absurd degree. Their range of attack is so wack it felt like they are cheating. Using guns won't actually matter as they are that fast and strong.

Manipulating magic, you can also imbue it to other objects so it becomes stronger. Though, there is only one thing.

Unlike using it on your body, putting your magic on other objects is not so simple. Each objects have their own magic conductivity, and there is always a loss when you do it.

Like if I put this in game terms. Putting 100 MP on a steel sword doesn't necessarily give a strength equivalent to that. At most, it will only retain 20 or 30 MP within. That's already a whopping 70% loss of magic.

Mithril, which is known to have the highest conductivity to magic, only have a 50% magic conductivity. Those are really rare.

This is why people needs to put a lot of their magical reserves just to make their weapons so strong.

How about just using it in their body?

Doesn't matter. Hand to hand combat became obsolete due to the fact that people here are superhumans. Putting them into submissions and hold will just cause the enemy to throw them away. Punches and kicks won't matter because the enemy can take a step back several meters away in a single breathe.

It's why swords and other weapons are a popular choice. By imbuing magic to their weapons, the capabilities of these objects increases tremendously. It can pierce through even their magic-clad bodies like it was wet paper.

Anyway, as I am saying. Mithril is already the strongest material out there, but there is a better material out there.

Slimes are just weak ass mobs who existed solely to be eaten by the wild. The way they survived is just to change their shapes and texture to better hide from their predators. They are omnivores and can pretty much eat anything.

They are also magical creatures who lives all their lives controlling magic to change their bodies. It's practically their oxygen.

That's when I come to think, how about I use them as materials?

And lo and behold! The slime bodysuit is an amazing prototype I made! It have a whopping 99% magical conductivity!

It can change form, and I can use all the excess to strengthen my defense, or even rip some of it to turn into weapons.

Isn't that a really ideal weapon for a shadowbroker like me?

I still need to test it, and so I am letting these people prepare. I think I will need at least 2 minutes to confirm if these prototypes are good or I should tweak it a bit more. Well, they just have to survive.

"Test number one." I muttered as I saw them getting ready.

I prepared my sword too, which is sheathed on my waist. The sword is jet-black and it gleams ominously on the light of the cracking fire.

"It doesn't matter. Just kill the brat!" One of them rushes towards me.

I pointed my sword at him and just let the blade elongate. Piercing him on his chest.

"Guaaaaaag--!?"

Function number one. This sword made of slime can elongate. It also seems like it's really sharp.

I think that confirms that putting even a tiny bit of my magic makes it incredibly dangerous.

"What happened!? Who the hell are you!?"

Looking at the remaining bandits, I smirked. I'm still not done testing whether this sword can hold or not!

"Hahaha! Die you pieces of loots!" I swing my sword around. Letting it bend like a whip as I dissect their bodies into pieces.

[This is the Protagonist]

"Hahahaha..... uh?" I frowned. I just noticed that the screams have quietened a lot.

Ugh... what a disappointment. It didn't even take half a minute to kill all of them.

"You!"

Well, at least there is one who is still alive behind me.

Dodging the strike that I think might have been a surprise attack, I saw him gape at me before glaring. He takes a stance that I am somewhat familiar with.

"Test number two." I muttered.

He attacks.... and I didn't dodge.

My body tilted as blood sprays out around the place. I can hear him saying about the Royal Bushin or something, but I honestly don't care as my second experiment is complete.

"Just kidding." I grinned as I quickly raised my feet in my tilting position. Hitting him in the crotch, and my feet slicing away straight to his forehead.

With that, the third experiment is complete.

"Wow.... this gives me a lot of options."

This body suit is not just an outfit. It's also a weapon itself. I turned the tip of my slime shoe sharp and slice him in half. It's simple as that.

"Still, it didn't take two minutes at all." I sighed at that. "Well, the experiment is a success, so it doesn't really matter." I shrugged before going to their stashes of loots.

"Paintings, food, weapons... I don't really need it. Jewelries can be sold, but I don't have the time to look for someone to trade it with." I shake my head before turning to the side.

I need money, not jewelries. I don't have any interest with it, and selling it feels bothersome.

I glance at the side and saw the hanged corpses of the people there. They might be the owners of these stolen caravan. Well, that might look like it.

"Don't worry. I avenge you. I'll use all your wealth to be a successful Shadow Eminence." I said as I clapped my hands into a prayer.

Then I heard a noise just beyond those hanging corpses. Feeling curious, I walked there and saw a covered object in it.

Is there something inside it? Maybe it's where they put their treasures?

Well, I decided to slide the cover off, and grimaced in disgust as I saw a rotting hunk of flesh within the cage.

".... Wait, I heard this is what the people from the church called as the Possessed?" I just recalled about that.

I heard that it was a grave disease that causes people to become a hideous lump of meat like this. I think they said it's a demon's curse, and the church is buying all these Possessed so they can purify it.

Well, the people who are turned into these were never seen again, so I'm sure they are just being burned to death or something.

Hurray for the medieval age!

Well, it's not really interesting. I can't really sell it to the church. They will ask where I got it, and as a really normal and unremarkable girl, I can't have that kind of attention.

Right, I'll just end it's misery here.... huh?

"Huh?"

As I got a bit closer to it, I felt a very familiar surge of magic rampaging through the meaty mound of flesh. I also experienced something like this on the past.

Isn't this the magic getting out of control?

I see.... so is this what's causing the possession?

When I experienced the magic going out of control, it is when I concentrated more magic than my body can handle so I immediately stop doing that. It might make me strong, but I don't want to take that kind of risk.

So this is what will happen to me if I recklessly use magic huh... wait! I just have a great idea!

I can't really do it on my own body because I might just explode, or that's what I thought when I first experience my magic getting out of control.

This one though? It's not even my body!

I can use this to further improve my magic manipulation!

So it might look like most of the scene are just a copy paste of the original, but I assure you that it will slowly derail it's plot as the story goes on.

Also if you are curious, yes, she is from a different territory. Though the territory of Kagenou family is near them.

Hope you have fun with this story!~♪ See you later!~♪

Chapter 2: Alpha & The Existence of an Evil Organization(lol)
The following month is great for me when I acquired that lump of rotting meat. I used it to experiment on my magic manipulation.

I tried to stabilize most of the rampaging flow. It's instinctual, like knowing when something is stuck, or something is messing up with the stability of the flow. I move the flow of chaotic mess to the right, the left, or sometimes upside down, and being amused at the different effects it is showing me.

I'm very glad that I found this lump of flesh. It is tremendously helping me at becoming more stronger.

It is just a shame that I have to always do this at night. I was always needed on the day, and I can't really leave my home without my Mother becoming suspicious. Only at the time when they sleep is when I finally get to do all my training.

Even hunting bandits is just another way of training for me. Though, I think I might have gone overboard because there are no more bandits in my territory. It is why I was even on the neighboring territory. I hope more criminals appears so I can fatten up my treasury.

Anyway, it's another night of going to the ruined town and using the lump of flesh to stabilize it's rampaging magic. This time I want to try something that might work. I think this will also help me in the future.

.... Well, I tried it. Though there is a problem.

The lump of rotting flesh turned into a beautiful naked blonde elf.

Uh.....

For now, I just told her to live her life as she please and was trying to leave, but it seems like she wanted to follow me for saving her life. I tried to reject the offer, but she is pretty persistent.

That was why, I decided to take her along with my shadowbroker job.

Though, if I was going to take her along, I need to have a background for it. I can't just use a reason like "I destroyed the whole city because I lost to a pachinko" while sounding solemn and imposing. I would look like an idiot!

So I need a reasonable background.

"Do you know of the legend of the Three Heroes and the Demon Diablos?" I started like that as I take a seat on the nearby wooden stump.

That is the legend usually told to children. I also have an unfortunate time having to recall about it because my mother always told me about that story.

"Yes but isn't that a fairytale?"

"Yes. It is on the surface, but do you know there is a hint of truth within that children's tale?" I put off a mysterious glance. "It is unknown to the surface world, but Diablos actually exists. Obviously the Three Heroes have defeated him. The full details of the tale was actually obscured by a secret organization!"

"What do you mean?" I can see the girl becoming absorbed by my words.

"Before Diablos draws his last breath, he brought a curse on the Three Heroes. The heroes inflicted with the curse will slowly degrade into mindless beast, along with every descendant they have." I smiled meaningfully. "This curse will later be called the Demon Possession."

"What, does that mean--!?"

"Yes. History has been rewritten by someone. The heroes who should have been venerated were humiliated and thrown away by the society. Leaving them to suffer and be killed like trashes."

"Who are they!?"

Woah, what a nasty glare.

"The Cult of Diablos. They wanted to resurrect the Demon Diablos. The existence of the heroes' descendants are an eyesore to them, so they twisted the history so the whole society turns against them."

"How dare they!?" She stood up and got closer to me. "We need to do something!"

This girl is really fired up, though I can somewhat understand. This world doesn't have much in the way of fantasy when it comes to literature. I was forced to read some novels along with my enthusiastic mother, but all of it are just sappy romance novels, or war chronicles of great people that I didn't care to remember.

As someone who have lived on Japan, and also someone who wanted to be a shadowbroker, making up bullshit like that is actually easy.

I raised my finger at her. "Their reach covers the entirety of this world. Important people, the church, every countries, this organization have their claws on them." I can see her looking shocked. "It is why I must fight in the shadows. A stage where nothing will come to light. It is the only stage where only I fought against them."

She looks like she is pitying me, but whatever.

"You can still forget about this and live a life as a normal girl. Spend your time on the light where you can't see, can't hear, and can't speak about the darkness that lurks on this world."

"No.... I want to fight them!"

I smiled at that, feeling a bit moved she is actually going along with me.

"Then so be it. I will now bestow you the name of Alpha." I stood up, and looks down on her.

She kneels at me and bowed her head at me.

"Thank you... Lady...."

Ah right... I almost forgot I didn't tell her about my name. Well, I am still in my shadowbroker mode so.... something cool...

"Call me Shadow. As for our organization, we will call it the Shadow Garden. We who lurks in the darkness and hunt down shadows." I was internally happy at the cool line I just spouted.

"Understood!"

Amazing, simply amazing. Everything I said is actually a lie. Though this girl is sure gullible. Not like I mind it.

"Then, we should quickly find the other heroes' descendants and shelter them in our organization!" She suddenly spouted off something unbelievable.

"Uh...." What is this girl talking about?

"We must also find a way to amass capital and strengthen ourselves so we can be prepared when the time comes!"

"U-uh... just do it in moderation."

Uwaa... this girl is rather hardcore. I would actually prefer if there is only the two of us.

Regardless of my thoughts, this is the day our fight against the imaginary evil organization(lol) begins.

Sorry for the short chapter.

Hope you have fun with this story!~♪ See you later!~♪

Oh I am having fun. I was heartbroken when the translations stopped for this story.

A side note, you can find very good images of the canon characters in the manga that was made, to help visualize the characters. The art for the manga was A1.

Chapter 3: To Be Considered As A Talentless Daughter
It's been two years since I recruited Alpha. Since then I have been training her.

Actually, I wasn't planning on it but she asked to acquire the same strength as I, and I think she meant she wanted to have some new techniques so I just taught her my own style.

Anyway, within those years, our organization acquired more members. All of them are girls that were inflicted by Demon Possession who I cured.

I was grateful for it because it's free training for my magic manipulation, though I also feel troubled because Alpha kept picking up some random strangers like they were stray kittens.

I know they were victims of these Demon Possession so maybe she felt sympathetic to them and kept taking them to me. Though, I'm not actually running a charity here so I hope she stops.

The girls who were cured of the Demon Possession all decided to follow me, so I also narrated my bullshit on them. Now they are loyal followers of my shadowbroker mode.

Me and my merry band of girls goes around the nearby territories, and taking care of bandits while calling them out as part of the cult. The girls are enthusiastic at playing along, so I just kept going at it.

Really, they even expand on the background of the cult. Like how they are more than what it seems, or how they discovered some artifacts, or reading some ineligible scribbles like they are truly researching.

These girls are really amazing. I can't ask for more suitable minions!

"It's coming closer." I muttered randomly as I walk on the halls of my manor.

I'm not in my Shadow mode currently. I am just the unremarkable daughter of the Baron, Arisa Frelldyll. Currently I'm just doing normal things to look very normal to the people.

It's really hard thinking of anything to be more unassuming as a girl. I did my best being the faceless female mob who only smiles on the background. My mother kept ruining that by trying to fix my appearance, and even the maids are fussy enough that they kept bothering me for it.

Well, it's thanks to my new maid escort that those annoying attempts have become lesser.

"I apologize Lady Shadow, but what is coming closer...?" That gentle voice comes from behind me.

Behind me is a silver haired elf who have been tailing me for awhile now. The maid outfit she is wearing suits her.

This is Beta. The second member of the Seven Shadows. The Seven Shadows are just the first seven girls who became members of the Shadow Garden. It's cool so I don't mind.

I'm just saying that randomly, but I can't just say that as it would break the immersion. Let's see.... oh, I just glanced at the window and saw our farm animals.

"At the coming night, a fool would attempt to capture a sheep. Unaware that the sheep is a wolf in disguise." My eyes wander around, until I saw some of those paintings that my father likes. "On the dark forest, three pillars will be illuminated by the grace of the night. Within is the path you seek."

I can hear the sound of the pen swiping through paper behind me. I'm sure she is writing some gibberish just to look like she has been listening to my nonsense.

Good acting, Beta!

"I see.... then, we will immediately prepare." I heard her say before feeling her presence vanish.

After saying that she is going to take a leave. Truly a remarkable minion behaviour. I don't have anything to teach you, Beta!

As for why Beta is here. I actually wanted to do some secret training. As my parents won't leave me alone without a single maid looking out for me, I can't really do it. So it is actually convenient she is covering for me.

Hurray for good friends!

Now then, I should train myself while they are not looking. I just got another epiphany to further my strength as a Power in the Shadow.

Something surprising happened on the midnight.

I was just preparing to go outside when I heard some clamor on the outside. I can feel some foreign magic signatures on the outside, so being curious I peek on the windows.

I saw some people clad in black robes killing our gate guards. They are jumping on our estate, and it seems like they are coming straight to my room.

Woah.... is this real.... is it really happening!?

These guys are skilled. They easily scaled the rooftops and get to my window. I actually have to go back to my bed and pretend to be sleeping. I also quickly change into my pajama. My slime suit is flexible like that.

Still, something like this is happening huh...

I am going to be kidnapped!

Actually, I think that's pretty normal. The people here are superhumans. People that can jump on the rooftops might be uncommon, but it's not rare to be surprising. As a noble, I'm sure they are here to take me and get some money out of my family.

Normally, I would just kill them. Though I have a better plan right now.

You see, I have been trying for a long time to convince my family that I am as unremarkable as possible, and that they shouldn't really bother trying to fix me, or "Better my future" or whatever.

I want them to just let me become normal, get some child and turn them into a head. Being a head of this house is really not good for my mob persona.

In fact, I have been trying for some years for my parents to become lovey dovey and do their you-know-what, so they can finally have someone decent and they leave me alone. I want my Arisa persona to be a background character, dammit!

My father said he still has hope for me. My mother has a rather high opinion of my appearance. Despite making all the efforts to become the most unremarkable one, I can't just put their eyes off of me.

What if I get kidnapped?

It's just a spur of the moment thought really, but if I get kidnapped here. I'm sure they will finally see that I am actually talentless, and they should have another child to become a new head to this house.

After that, I can finally have more time with my training. I have already wasted a lot of my time being cooped up in my house. I have to do thrice the amount of training that I planned since I got reincarnated here just to reach my expected growth.

Also, though it is just my assumption, aren't female mobs prone to getting kidnapped just as much as the main heroines?

I'm sure those bandits are taking girls left and right just to acquire some ransom money. I will be just another name in their mark where they can have some income. Which means if I stayed for awhile on their base acting like a defenseless girl, I would actually have some chance showing off that, yes, I am not suited to the main screen.

Also also, they are really good when scaling my rooftops. That means they might be a part of a large bandit group.

If they are a part of a large bandit group, that would mean a large base. A large base means a lot of zeni.

I can't help but smile within myself.

I can easily just kill them, but it would just rise some confusion to my family. They might even think I am more talented and become more pushy at making me the head.

So, I have to be gone for a few days. It might be heartbreaking for my family here, but for the sake of my ambitions, I'll have to stay at the bandits for now.

It will be a good training ground for me too!

When the day comes, the house of Frelldyll went into an uproar.

Their only daughter, Arisa Frelldyll went missing.

So another butterfly has occured.

Slight spoiler to the next chapter. Claire will be introduced

Final chapter for today for now.

Hope you have fun with this story!~♪ See you later!~♪

Chapter 4: I'm In Prison
I'm in a prison.

My wrists were held by these metallic cuffs. These cuffs are restricting my use of my magic. So I think I am helpless right now?

Besides me is another girl who have long black hair and red eyes. She have a fair skin, pretty look, yada yada yada.

I would normally not care, but this girl is giving me some "I'm the main character" vibe.

There is always someone who is rotating to keep us in this cell, so even if we miraculously break free of our restraints, we will still be captured easily.

These magic restricting cuffs makes us weaker, and there are guards who obviously have no handicap and can use their magic.

Sounds like an impossible stage.

But actually, it's a perfect place for me.

I was looking for these things that can mess with magic, but I heard that it was impossible to get it by normal means. Bandits don't have it. Even some of the crime den that I raided doesn't have it.

I can't really go to the black market. I don't even know where I can find something like that.

So it was really a surprised to find a bandit group with these kind of thing. I really wanted to train myself while my magic is being restrained.

Let's see, let's see.... it's really impossible to manipulate the magic around me to my body. Though, with my level of control, I can somewhat pick up some of it and compressed it within my nerves.

I just have to do it piece by piece. Control it like weaving needle. It only suppresses magic that comes into contact with my body. It can't do anything from those that are small enough to get within my body.

Just by these alone, I know I am improving a lot more.

I really want to stay here for at least a week. Wait scratch that. At least give me a month so I can master controlling my magic even with these cuffs on.

These magic suppressing cuffs. I want to take it home!~

"Hey... you awake?"

My musings were interrupted by my fellow cellmate.

I was acting like I'm still unconscious. My head lowered and pacing my breathing so it will look like I'm sleeping.

At first I thought having long hair is a pain, though it's actually useful when I have to act like this. I can still glance around me without anyone knowing it. Perfect concealment technique without arousing any suspicion!

Still, I might have messed up so I should stop and respond to her. They might get suspicious if I continue acting like this more.

"Hmm..... huh...?" First, I lower my tone and stir for a bit. Then raises my head slowly while coincidentally letting my hair part for a bit so my upper face can be seen. After that, act like I'm confused for a short while, then suddenly look around with a start.

"W-where is this!?" The finale will be asking that. "Where am I!?" Then add it like that while looking at my cellmate, and making sure that my eyes are trembling and wide.

Perfect. I think I am getting the gist of acting like a female mob.

What do you think, my fellow cellmate?

"... Based on your expression, it seems like your unaware that you have been taken here. Looking at your outfit, it seems like they took you while you are sleeping." She mutters while looking at me with pity in her eyes.

Great. Though she is unusually calm at a time like this.

Well, she have this main character aura surrounding her, so I think that's typical. I would love it if she takes all the screentime while I am on the background just being another footnote for her.

"Hey.... may I know your name?" She asks that, and I just noticed that she sounds a bit weaker.

Now that I look at her carefully, I can see some dark blotches on some of her limbs. She have a really strong look with her eyes, so I didn't notice at first.

And this feeling. It seems like she also have Demon Possession, huh...

"I-I'm.... I'm A-arisa.... Arisa F-f-frelldyll...." I have to act so scared and confused.

"Calm down. You didn't have to be scared." Her eyes becomes soft for a moment. "So, your the child of Frelldyll huh..." She seems to have recognized me.

"D-do you know me...?"

"Yes. I'm really curious about the sickly daughter of the Frelldyll Baron. Now that I got a look at you, I feel more angry at our captors."

Sickly daughter? Me? Why?

"S-sickly daughter...?"

"You don't need to worry about that. I'll try to find a way to get you out of here."

I don't know what's her deal, but I honestly want to stay here, so no thanks.

"U-uhmm.... w-we can't..." I said with a tremble in my voice.

"Don't worry. I'll think of something."

This girl is stubborn. Well whatever. It's not like she can do something about it.

By the way, I still didn't know who she is.

"Uhmm.... thank you... m-miss...?"

Despite the weakness of her face, I notice her forcing a smile at me.

"Claire Kagenou. I'm the only daughter of the Kagenou House."

Ah. So this is Claire Kagenou....

Nope, I don't remember. Though at least I know she must be from that other territory that I kept visiting recently.

Unlike the Frelldyll Territory, the Kagenou Territory have a lot of bandits in it. I met some strong bandits there, but also got a lot of loot in it. It's also where I found Alpha, so that place is actually important for me.

It have a poor public order, and a lot of the crowds there always goes to banditry. It's amazing that the territory is even standing to this day.

Basically, it's a money factory for me.

Man, I really want to thank her for taking care of me(with those bandits). Maybe I should do something nice to her.

Like, what if I just cured her Demon Possession? I'm sure that will be good enough!

I don't have enough money to spare. So just the cure is enough, right?

I'll do it while no one is looking. Can't really let them see that I can just leave here easily.

"As expected, they really took the bait."

Alpha muttered to herself as she looks at the house of her beloved Master on the distance. She is crouched on the tree branch, while gazing at the windows where she can see Arisa's mother weeping.

"Lady Alpha, I'm here to report." She sensed Beta's presence appearing besides her. With her prodding, the silver haired elf continues. "Currently, the Frelldyll Baron dispatches his troops to find their missing daughter. They also asks for help from their neighboring territories."

"Just as expected, he is going to move his troops around the whole territory huh..." Alpha smiles wryly at that. Then she shakes her head. "Though sadly, she is no longer on this region."

She can't help but acknowledge the father. In just a single day, he manages to amass an army just by his charisma alone. It's actually fitting for him to be the father of their beloved Master.

Sadly, they have no knowledge about the darkness of this world. Their info about the underbellies of the society mostly constitutes of known criminals and the Outlaw City.

"What about the words of Lady Shadow?"

"Yes.... with the help of Eta, we managed to decipher the hidden meaning of her words. It seems like the second verse of her words points to the secret hideout of those who kidnaps her."

"Does that mean..."

"Yes. It's the Cult of Diablos!"

She gritted her teeth at that. "Those bastards.... so they got a whiff of our Lady..." Just as quickly as she felt her mana surging, she quickly calms herself down.

".... Should we go and launch a rescue squad?" Beta asked.

"No..." She shakes her head. "We will wait for the full moon to approach." She says.

"Huh.... does that mean...?"

"Hm. Lady Shadow have already predicted what will happen."

The two of them feels at awe at the scale their beloved Master works.

"She gave us the perfect stage to introduce ourselves." Beta felt like crying.

".... We must meet the expectations of our Lady." Beta nodded at her words. Then the blonde elf glances at the weeping mother behind the windows. "I apologize, but it seems like you can't see your daughter for a few more days...." She mutters under her breathe, before the two of them vanishes.

Short chapter again, sorry....

Hope you have fun with this story!~♪ See you later!~♪

Chapter 5: Claire Kagenou
Claire didn't know how many days it has been since she was taken to this dark and crammy cell. Though if she have to guess, it might be a week now.

At first she was alone, then learning that the leader of the kidnappers is one of the known nobles locally who is also a participant of the Bushin Festival makes her feel somewhat disillusioned about the world.

She is actually feeling weak a few months ago, and her symptoms has become much worse this last week. If not for the abduction, she knows she will sooner be thrown and erase from the family due to her disease.

The Demon Possession. She can see it slowly terrorizing her body. Making her feel weak. It is also making it hard to use her magic lately.

The people around here seems to be interested with her disease. Though she don't know why it is. Maybe they are waiting for her to turn into a Possessed so they can sell her for a high price on the church?

Regardless, she wants to act nobly for the last time. At least she wanted to die without showing any signs of weakness against her captors.

Then they captured another girl, this time is a surprising one. It is the sickly daughter of their neighboring lord.

She thought that the rumors about the Frelldyll Family having a child was just false because she didn't show on any of the social gatherings for the local lords around here. It's been many years. Children usually debuts on the noble society when they hit six years old.

Though now looking at the weak small girl besides her, she can't help but feel her heart clench at the sight. She looks so weak. She is like a feather that is close to wilting to ashes.

She inherited the appearance of her mother, and those gentle eyes of her father. Even the beautiful shade of purple hair was inherited, so it can't be denied that she is the daughter of those two people.

Though, it also confirms some of the rumors about the sickly girl and why she is not being shown to the public. Unlike the vibrant eyes of her family, hers looks so lifeless as if nothing matters to her anymore. Her entire aura is nonexistent, and she seems to exude an atmosphere that essentially rejects any notion of socializing.

'She looks so frail' is what she is thinking.

She heard from rumors that the girl have some talent, but is being held back by her sickly nature. She can't amass enough strength to destroy stones, unlike the average dark knights who can do it. She doesn't even fix her appearance, like it doesn't matter to her anymore.

It depicts a grim picture, and it makes her sad to see that gloomy atmosphere surrounding this frail girl besides her.

'I'll make sure I save her!' That's why she swore to herself.

She didn't want the girl to live her life always being in despair of her own powerlessness. She didn't want the girl to live a fate being played by their captors.

As a proud noble hailing from the family who produces great Dark Knights for some generations, she swears that she will make sure Arisa Frelldyll gets back to her family in one piece.

Maybe, because of that resolve within her, her Demon Possession is subsiding.

She didn't know why but awhile ago, she felt the deepest parts of herself becoming warmer. The pinpricks tearing down on her resistance is slowly vanishing, until they were entirely nonexistent. Looking at her periphery, she can see her limbs has become fairly smooth without any of those black blemishes.

She might not know, but she thinks she can control her magic much better now.

Regardless of the reasons, she is grateful for that. She thinks this might even be a sign from the heavens. They are guiding her to do a heroic act right now.

"Just a bit more, and we will get out of here!"

Arisa only responded to her whispers with a weak nod. Her eyes still looking downcast and her face in that perpetual gloom.

Haha, this place is truly amazing. It's a great test of my endurance and focus!

They barely give us palatable meals, and we were given limited amounts of drinking water. They even shoved those meals to us roughly.

Of course, acting like a female mob, I always cry and call for my mother. I really feel satisfied. I'm sure even my audiences here we're immersed by my own acting.

At the same time, I have been training my magic control under this suppression, and it is a great success. I finally know how to flow magic into tiny linear particles. Though I'm sure I can make it more smaller. So I wanted to do this for a few months, or maybe even for a few years.

I have decided. I will take these magic suppressing cuffs when I decided to leave this place!

At the same time, I have been healing this person everytime no one is looking. It's also a great training for my stealth so that's a plus.

It's hard at first because I tried healing her while both of us still have these magical shackles. Though it's also training so whatever.

Well, she is basically cured now so I will consider my debts paid. Now I can just waltz on their territory and take all my money(bandit loots) in there!

Please have more criminals on your territory. That will greatly help me.

[Ladies and Gentlemen, our "Hero"]

While I was being immersed with my thoughts while continuing all of my training, I felt the familiar magical presences of my minions.

... Oh... they found me huh...

Well, it is good while it lasted. Maybe it's time leave this place anyway.

Just as I was thinking that, I heard the commotion just outside our cell.

"Sir Grease! We were under attack!"

"What!? Who is it!?"

"We don't know. It is a mysterious group of people wearing black!"

"Tsk. Have someone to escort these girls out! We can't afford to let these invaders take them!"

"Yes sir!"

For a bandit, they act professionally huh... though I think I should have expected that to a bandit group this large...

As I saw most of the bandits leaving, and one of them opening our cells, I saw Claire on my periphery slipping one of her wrist out of her bindings and punching the guard in the face.

Wow, this girl is good. She willingly bent her own hand and use that broken hand to punch the guard to the face. It was even a solid hit.

The guard crumples on the ground, though I can see that he was just concussed.

"It's our chance!" I heard Claire said as she reaches out to the key dangling on the bandit's waist.

She manages to reach out to it with her broken hand, I can hear her grinding her teeth as she uses it to take off the cuff restraining her other hand, then she quickly got to me to free me too.

"Come on, let's go!" She urges me on.

Well, Alpha and the others are already here so might as well. Though before that...

"Behind you!"

With my warning, Claire immediately ducks which causes the bandit's pommel attack to miss.

Then she charges at the bandit and uses her body to pin him down on the ground.

"Run! I'll take care of this!"

That is so ballsy. Just doing that despite being weakened. Honestly I think she can at least become the protagonist, or maybe an important side character that will help the main character.

I wonder why she is trying so hard protecting a weak ass mob like me, but maybe that's because of her heroine aura. Anyway, I'll just take the way out and leave her here.

I run away from there while still showing that I am reluctant. While doing that, I didn't forget to snatch some of those magic suppressing cuffs.

.... Hmm.... it will be bad if I leave her alone and let her be killed. It will be such a waste because I healed her.

Right, let's help her for a bit.

As I got on the bend that obscures me from their perspective, I took a single piece of my slime suit, rolled it around my thumb, and then flick it to the bandit that she is pinning down.

I made sure that he won't die. Can't let her become suspicious of it.

Now then, I heard they are wearing their Shadow Garden uniforms. That means they are playing without me.

Tch tch... I want in on the action too. I think I should go to my Shadow mode and beat some bandits too.

Next chapter will be something that is very similar to what happened to the novel. Only some will have an original content on it.

Hope you have fun with this story!~♪ See you later!~♪

I honestly did he pull the Diabolus card and get it inadvertently right in canon as well because I am currently finding the whole thing hilarious

Chapter 6: Denial & Resolve
"Ugh.... I'm lost..."

Just when I got a great idea, this happens?

This place is more like a maze than a bandit hideout. How the hell did they even make something like this?

I would really like it if they are more stingy with their money. That way I will have more on my shadowbroker treasury!

Such a waste.

I was planning to show myself to the bandits, and surprising them by showing my powers. It will be cool. The one they thought they already got in the palm of their hands is actually a hidden power capable of sweeping them in a single flick of their finger?

That's so freaking cool!~

But I can't even see any bandits now. If I saw someone, they are already dead. I would be really happy if Alpha and the others ignores some so I can have some fun. It's unfair that they are the only one to play as the shadowbrokers.

"...." I felt a presence quickly approaching my position. Seeing an indent on the wall suddenly rising, I kept my cool even if I think secret passages like that was amazing.

From there emerges the leader of the bandits. What's his name again? Grass? Grief? Greece?

Also, does he really have this kind of power? He have more magical presence than Alpha!

... Meh, whatever.

"You.... how did you get out? Tch... doesn't matter, you are coming with me!"

Wait, I was looking for an audience(victim) for my shadowbroker mode. I think the bandit leader is enough for this. He might survive at least two minutes to me.

While my head is still lowered, I let his hands get a bit closer until it touches my hair, then immediately take a single step forward, lower my stance for a bit, and hit his sternum with a well place elbow strike.

"GUHAH-!?"

He reels from the shock as he takes several steps back. His eyes looks shocked at what I did, before quickly glaring at me.

"How!?"

I got back to my normal standing posture. Raising my head and smirking while looking down at him.

"Your role on this stage is over. It is time you left the stage!" I randomly spout as I raised my arm to the side, then forming my blade with my slime suit. Along with that, I also take the moment to change into my Shadow form.

Theatrics like this is cool if I say so myself!~

"... W-what... an ebony blade that shines in the darkness...." He looks surprised before he glares at me. "You're with them!?"

He jumps at me, unsheathing his sword and going for a stab. Though I meet his stab with my own. Letting our swords meet without an inch of error.

Hmm.... what a disappointment. He have all this strength, but he is just dumping all of his power without sense.

I mean, if I was force to choose between power and talent, I will choose power all the time. Without power, you can't defeat nuclear with talent alone.

Though combat without talent is very dull. It's a bit grating to my sensibilities.

That's why... right, let me give him some lessons.

"Lesson one."

I take my time getting closer to him with a casual stance. One step. Two step. On my third step he slashes at me with all of his might. Seeing that, I flow a tiny bit of my magic to my feet and use it to kick the ground, sprinting at him instantaneously and getting into his personal space.

With his blade hitting only air, I have enough time to move my sword and let the edge of my slime blade caress the skin of his neck. After that I jumped back.

With just the right usage of magic, speed, power, and reflexes can be used efficiently!

"Lesson two."

I take another moment to get near him. This time without using any magic at all. I can see him becoming hesitant whether to attack me or defend, though ultimately he takes a step back. Within that time frame I quickly dashes at him and hit his leg, going a bit deeper and giving him a light wound.

Attack, defense, and movement can't be done at the same time. There is always a gap in time to transition from one action to another. By reading the magical flow within the body, it is easy to predict the enemy's next move.

"Lesson three."

I'm just getting started!

'Just when did I get this overwhelmed?' Grease thought as he was kept being punished by slashes that only wounded him lightly. Everytime the girl moves, another small wound would appear on his skin.

This is so different than when he fought the one who is calling herself Alpha, or even the time he got defeated at the Bushin Festival by the princess. Going further by his memories, he finally recalls how he first takes the path of the sword and got beaten badly by his master.

Yes, that comparison is apt to what is happening to him right now.

Still, despite the countless wounds she have inflicted on him, she's not finishing him off.

He don't know why. Maybe she was enacting revenge due to how they treat her when she was still in captivity?

He thinks that might be it. The girl always look so gloomy everytime he comes into the cell. Though she always cries and scream when they got near her, but he receives the reports of his subordinates and always heard that she is always looking gloomy and seems to be deep in thought.

Is that it? Was she actually contemplating what she is going to do to them?

The crying can be an act, but those time when she was just brooding on her own? She might actually be hesitating?

The girl might be a member of that group that seems to know the existence of the cult, but she is still a small girl. Someone of the same age as the daughter that he have lost.

"Why?" He wanted to ask, why she is doing this?

To see someone of his daughter's age doing things like this, he can't help but become hesitant. It is fine if it's those group of girls, they have the aura of malice only people from the underworld can see.

Though the one he is fighting right now? She doesn't have it!

There is no malice on her strikes, and it's all shallow attacks. Even the way she looks at him is still so sad, like she wasn't even registering what she is doing.

He have to know. Why does a girl doing this!?

"We lurk in the darkness and hunt down shadows. That's the only reason we exist." She said that so coldly, but her voice have some solemnity in it.

He felt his heart clenched at that. Hearing her words, it felt like she was so lonely as she says that.

"Are you planning to go against them!?" The darkness that lurks on the world. He have tried to go against them, and was utterly beaten. Now he lost everything and was consumed by it too.

The girl only gazes at him, making him feel like scratching his head. Can't she see that what she is doing is absurd!?

"Regardless of how strong your groups are, you can't defeat them! The darkness of this world is deeper than the abyss!" He wanted her to stop and just leave.

He have been against this from the start, but the order of the cult asks for Arisa's capture too. He can't deny their orders. This girl looks so sickly, it just reminded him of his daughter.

If there is next life, he wanted to apologize to his daughter. He is just here trudging along on this dreadful life, and letting injustice come and go.

He can't do anything, and so does this girl. Or so he thinks, because right now he is hoping the girl can somehow see sense and hide. She have the capability, she shouldn't waste her life on something like this!

"Then we dive, no matter how deep."

That tone of finality, he can hear the determination deep within that solemn tone of hers.

He widened his eyes at that, surprised. Before finally letting out a cackle, and then a laugh.

"Hahahaha..... HAHAHAHAHA!" He laughs, as if he understood now.

He can't save this girl without showing her the truth of this world.

"I see." He muttered under his breathe, before taking the bottle of red lozenge within the pocket of his cloth, and then chugging all of it's contents.

If you truly want to oppose the darkness!

If you truly want to destroy the injustice!

Defeat me!

He let out a scream as he felt his body exploding and imploding. He can feel a surge of power that seems to break down his bones and nerves, and hold it in at the same time.

"HURRAAAAAAAH!!!"

In an instant, he was already in front of the black-cladded girl. His single swing was blocked, but the girl was thrown to the side of the wall due to the sheer force of his swing.

The girl seems to have managed to recover herself midair, and uses the momentum to step onto the wall and land on the floor, getting into the stable footing.

Though quickly, he got in front of her again and once again slams his sword to her small frame. Battering her away and away on each occasion she recovers herself.

"This is power! This is strength! You should give up now!" He screams at her, clobbering her forcefully regardless if she blocks or parries.

Though as the time passes, she is still standing without anything staining her hooded suit.

"AGH??" He got surprised when he felt another slice to his stomach, causing him to tremble in anger. "USELESS!" He let out a scream and goes for a series of wild strikes.

Regardless, he wasn't hitting her. Unlike him who was accumulating wounds. Still, she can't do anything. Every wounds she inflicted easily regenerates. His transformation is the symbol of unfairness that this world represents.

No matter what kind of talent she have, no matter how skillful she is, true power can't be defeated.

Though he will admit that he can't really touch her. As their battle goes on, he is becoming more hopeless as the girl is practically untouchable.

Why? Why can't I hit her!?

He can't understand. Even while being hit with the absurdity of his violence, she is just standing there calmly. Looking at him with that solemn gaze beneath her hood.

"Playtime is over."

And then he finally understood.

'Beautiful'

A beautiful purplish light converges around her blade, as if darkness itself has been sucked. It glows with a light so natural and perfect. As if illuminating the wretched appearance of his corruption.

"I see...." He finally understood why.

She is not delusional. She actually can do it. He is the one being taught a lesson here. The one who lost on the fight against the darkness.

As the girl swings her blade, everything was cut in it's path. The air. The space. Then his body. Without him noticing it, he was already looking at the ceiling with his fading consciousness, above him is half of his torso as the girl is walking away behind him.

"Millia...."

The last thing he saw is the recollection of his beloved daughter. Then it's only darkness.

"Hmm..... what is this I wonder?"

I was trying to loot the body of that bandit leader when I saw this dagger of some sorts. It have some words written in it, but I actually don't care about it.

"Lady Shadow. We are here."

"Oh, Alpha." Good timing.

I passed her the dagger I got from the bandit leader. I think she might like it.

"What is this?"

"Something important..." I said with a shrug.

After that, we left this place while being escorted by Alpha. Well, I'm actually following them because I can't find the exit.

That bandit leader is pretty strong. Though I am thankful for him because he gave me some inspirations to say those cool one-liners.

I think I heard Alpha mutter why I am smiling, but it doesn't matter. I'll just bask in this feeling of accomplishment until I get home.

So this is what happens when I change the dialogue xD

Some butterflies occurs in there....

Hope you have fun with this story!~♪ See you later!~♪

Chapter 7: Prologue Ends
After that incident, I came back to my house looking all dirty and sad. Then do my best acting like a minor character in front of my family. It's all crying and being relieved and whatnot.

Maybe because of it that the following day, they called me to their room and basically told me that they don't care even if I live normally right now.

They said something about feeling regret pressuring me, or they want me to become happy too or something. I don't know what is really happening, but I'm happy that it came to this.

So, I think being kidnapped to stop being the head of this house is a success?

Though, it still didn't stop my family from giving me a lot of escorts everytime I walked around. I can't even leave the house.

.... Damn, so it seems like my training schedule (playing as a shadowbroker) will still stay the same.

Then this last week, Claire has somehow taking a liking to me. Though it seems like she can't visit me because she was still recovering from her house, but she kept giving me letters talking about her days.

It talks about her health, then asking about my hobbies and some other typical things. I actually don't want to get closer to her, though I think I will be rude not to write back, so I am always replying to her letters on the next day.

I hope she forgets about me soon. Even if she is the future lord of my money facto--I mean the neighboring territory, she still exudes main character vibes.

I would prefer acting like a power in the shadow and guiding her to my nonsense. Though I don't know what kind of background I should use. I'll think about it next time.

Currently, I'm reading another letter from here. It seems like she is going to the capital soon. Apparently she should have gone two weeks ago, but because of the kidnapping it got delayed and her family forced her to get some rest on her house.

It's obvious why she is coming to the capital. Every nobles are required to attend the Dark Knights Academy on the capital. Even my family told me that I will be attending there.

I'm still twelve, so I'll have to wait for three years. Which means I have still have time to train before going to the big stage. I'm sure at the capital there are many protagonists, and last bosses scattered around there. I only need to find some, and meddle with them while spouting as if I know anything.

Right, my mind made up, I quickly decided to continue my training!

Some days later, I was called by Alpha and the others to do our usual meetings. This time all the Seven Shadows are here.

They started with their usual reports. They go with the setting that the bandit hideout that we raided recently have a lot of info about the cult. Like how it reveals the true scale of their grasps and some important bits about the structure of their organization.

They also said something about Compatibles, Children, and some other things but I was honestly not listening at all. I can't really remember it all because their explanations are always so long and a bit complicated.

I am happy at them expanding on our background, but I really hope they should take it easy and make something easier to understand.

I'm still wondering how I will tell that to them when Alpha suddenly said something that surprises me.

"That's why, this will be a goodbye for now Arisa..."

..... Huh?

That was surprising, but she quickly gave me some reason about not having enough personnel, and going around the world so they can expand on their operations.

.... Ah. I see. So they finally find out...

Going around the world and expanding their operations must have mean "We wanted to live our lives, so please let us go!"

I mean, I'm not actually forcing them to come along with me. Though it might be because I saved them so they are playing along with me out of gratitude. I'm sure they finally find out that the Cult of Diablos is not real and they don't want to play pretend with me anymore.

I knew this day would come. I knew it, but it still felt disappointing. A child's admiration to their heroes will lose when they get older. That just means they have grown up.

They said they will still go on a rotation basis on who will stay besides me. They're such good friends still entertaining me despite knowing that everything I said is just bogus.

Hmm...

I gave them my farewells and they left me alone.

In the middle of this sunset, I look up at the skies and swear to myself that I will continue pursuing my dreams to be an Eminence in Shadow. It doesn't matter even if I'm alone on that path!

Finally, time skip to the capital woohoo!~

Thank you for reading this!~♪

Hope you have fun with this story!~♪ See you later!~♪

Chapter 8: First Step.... Failed Already!?
Three years since then. Now I have arrived at the capital of this kingdom. This is the place where I can truly start going all out for my act as a shadowbroker.

As expected of the capital, it's really big. There are a lot of landmarks here, and tall buildings that I can use to look down on. I already marked some potential roofs that will give me those scenic shots.

As for where I am staying, it's on a certain apartment for dirt cheap poor nobles like me. The rent only costs 20,000 Zeni, so that's actually a steal. It's also monthly so I am grateful because I can't afford more than that.

Whatever happened on my first fifteen years in this world is just a prologue. Now the story is truly beginning. This is where I can build up my name as Shadow. Letting those important Named Characters learn about my infamy slowly.

Just thinking about it is making my blood boil. If I also spout some deep sounding quotes, I think that will be perfect!

I'm glad I came here alone.

My parents were actually heavily against letting me go alone to the capital. I was forced to break character and say that "I want to spread my wings wider" or something random like that. They let me go after some time.

Anyway, now that I got a place to stay, I think it's time to find some friends. I already have my subordinates (as Shadow), but I also need people on my daily life side (as Arisa).

And would you look at that? There are already the two perfect candidates looking at me and are approaching me!

One of them is a tall and thin man with a bad fashion sense, and another is a stocky small guy whose face looks like a potato.

I think I should give them a greeting.... huh!?

Wait, what is happening. Why am I suddenly feeling this strange chill on my skin? It felt like predators are gazing on me!?

Looking at them once more, I can see them looking very eager to approach. Their facial expressions looking very disgusting that I am instinctively taking a step back.

"A real lady is here!?"

"It's our chance!"

I don't know why but I think I should run away right now.

And so I did. Moving at speeds insanely high for my mob-ness, and hiding my presence after getting away from their sight.

"Ugh... why did I forget..."

This is such a blunder. I've become too excited getting to the capital that I miss an obvious, simple fact.

I'M A GIRL!!

What kind of female mob befriends male mobs like it's nothing?

That will only make me look like a sore thumb. It's really obvious when you look at it on another perspective.

Those guys are the perfect friends for a mob like me. The only thing is it's perfect if I'm a guy.

I'm a girl right now. Even if they are just mobs.... no, because they are mobs that they will try to hit on me.

A girl is a girl!

That's prime target number one for a mob!

This is bad. I have to fix this soon. All my plans are already crumbling before me!

It's easy. I just have to find fellow female mobs to befriend and anything will return to normal.... wait...

"Wait... what kind of friends does a female mob has?"

... Crap, I don't know about it!

Maybe I should look to other girls who have the same personality as me? Nah, no.... I'll just look like a sub character if that happens!

I need to be someone who is totally in the background. But how!?

Are there any girls here who acts like a normal girl. Now that I think about it, what does a normal girl do?

What do I do usually?

My father trains me to the sword and I always held myself back greatly so he doesn't notice a thing. Let my mother dress me up to whatever she wants with me. Go to bed. Sleep. Then immediately wake up to start my real training (bandit hunting).

..... There is nothing in there that can be considered normal, isn't it?

Like, it feels like an Eta thing to do... no, wait, she's still a lot more worse when it comes to sleeping so I'm at least at entry level!

How about using Alpha and the others as a template.... no, they are more suited to hidden powers in the background role rather than a normal girl role.

My mother is out of the question. She have former heroine aura. Claire? She's the freaking main character!

"Hmm....."

For now, let's just check out some of the rooftops while contemplating about this.

Being a female mob is tough....

"Uuuuugh..... it's over.... I can't become a mob anymore...."

I felt my soul leaving my mouth as I trudged along the paved path to the gates of the academy.

Now it is school day, and I still haven't found anyone that can fit my background as an unremarkable female mob. In fact, I don't even know what kind of person I am looking for!

Shy, unassuming girls are also popular for the main character role. Or at least they get to the main screen for some relevant arc of a story.

A loner girl is also not good, because they also have a high chance of being the main protagonist, or even an antagonist!

A friendly person? That too is common for the main screen!

What about a poor girl? That's just worse! They might be the protagonist themselves!

Curse the Japanese Media. They turned literally every templates into either a main character or a villainess one! How can I do this now!?

This is the first chapter where I have no guides to any of the materials themselves (WN/LN/Manga/Spinoff/Anime/Game)

Also, sorry for the very short chapter again....

Hope you have fun with this story!~♪ See you later!~♪

I would usually complain about simply switching your protagonist's sex isn't enough to make an actually good fic, but with how single-mindedly dumb Shadow can be, it's actually not impossible to make a decent plot with it.

I would warn about sticking too close to The Stations of Canon however. It can grow sterile. Shadow has the advantage of being akin to Suzumiya Haruhi, depending on his mood, you can alter reality. You are free to alter the plot as you wish.

The most fruitful approach for Shadow here would be to broaden his understanding of character aesthetics. His desire to be an Eminence in Shadow comes from wanting to emulate male anime characters looking badass and mysterious. Fire Emblem Path of Radiance's Black Knight comes to mind. These characters look badass and mysterious because they act alone, since their allies would reveal things about the mysterious character with their very presence and behaviour. They embody cool as solitary actors in the dark, they can look cool on their own. Shadow's issue is that this archetype is harder as a girl.

It's not the only way to act as an Eminence in Shadow. Traditionally, males can act as lone agents, but girls are conduits of higher power, whether it is channeling the authority of their parents, their husband, their lord, or their god. The knight errant and the noble lady are such archetypes.
In order to learn to be a female Eminence in Shadow, Shadow should learn how to make use of props, whether it is names, characters or locations.

The hyper competent sidekick serious secretary is defined by her relation with her boss, but Shadow can use that in a non-subservient role. Shadow could totally pull the "mysterious girl giving power to the protagonist so he can face the villain where the mysterious girl herself can not because of her mysteriously tragic backstory that enabled her to give the power to the protagonist". If it is too complicated, Shadow can simply pull the "female Anti-Pope Eminence in Shadow", a dark priestess handling sorcerous forces from beyond, as a shadow counterpart to the Diabolos Cult. It would be perfectly possible to exploit the all-female status of Shadow Garden to be thematic.

On a more direct use, using characters as props could push Shadow to use Alexia for example to truly shine as a female mob. Instead of being any kind of independant female character, implying the terrifying prospect of turning into a waifu later in the plot, Shadow could simply be that hanger-on sticking to the popular girl and be the blandless-est kind of mob possible.

All it requires is learning how to use others in your phenomenological delusions of Eminence aesthetics.

H-how....!?

How did you predict what I'm thinking, and also make it much better than what I planned. O_O

I bow to your presence! I'll praise your name starting to this day!

..... But anyway, I have a plan that somewhat coincides with it. I'm really surprised you managed to get it, and also make it better. Now more ideas are coming to my mind!

So thank you~

Everything was already written. [Dramatic hair flipping before turning away like Akemi Homura, an aura of mysterious badassery following me as everyone is in awe before me.]

More seriously, I wondered how you could translate Shadow as a girl with the whole Eminence in Shadow aspect. That's where it led me to. Trying to understand the differences in portrayal between male and female characters in the past helped a lot.

To be honest, Shadow is going to have competition with Alpha. I have given a glance to the anime, and the adaptation they did of Alpha would be the kind of Eminence of Shadow female Shadow should take some notes on.

Chapter 9: Back to the Drawing Board
Hello, this is Arisa Frelldyll. The lonely gloomy girl who sits besides the window. Yes, that's me!

It's been a week since I got to this school, and since then I haven't found anyone who can be my friends. There are some who talks to me, and I also respond back to them though I actually didn't know if I should accept them as my friends or not.

First of all, and now that I am noticing it, every girls here have their certain appeal. It's not really attractive for me, but they have this air around them that always hits every niche of any guys, mobs or main characters alike.

This is actually my first time looking at each and every girls I met carefully, and all I can say is that literally everyone of them can possibly be seen on the main screen.

So do I stay as a loner type mob? I think that's the only thing I can do! I've already mastered the art of loneliness after all!

No! It's not even an option!

I don't know why, but everytime I imagined a female mob being a loner, all I see are an interesting character that will have their own main arc in the main story.

Which is bad, because I want to be an Eminence in Shadow!

How can I be a hidden power in the background if I literally have an arc of my own!? That defeats the purpose of being a shadowbroker!

So with feelings of hesitation, I have avoided a lot of people. Everyone who tried to converse with me, I immediately shutdown with simple, and concise words that kills a conversation. As for those who are just planning to do so, I avoid them entirely.

I have to think of something, and fast. I can't continue avoiding anyone. They will become suspicious, and any hero or heroines out there will become interested in me.

So now I'm in my room on the apartment I rented, the skies are dark beyond my windows as I look at the book in front of me. It's one of my personal diaries where I wrote everything I planned and also listed most of the things I wanted to do.

Most of it are full of cross marks and chicken scratches. It is barely readable anymore because I kept taking off ideas upon ideas whenever I tried imagining myself doing it.

Becoming friends with mobs like me are already crossed out. Other ideas like being rejected by my (supposed) crush is also denied. Being beaten by the protagonist is also one thing. Etc.

I essentially have to abandon all my ideas as a mob. It's a literal blank slate now. My ideal is slowly being broken for this past week, and I think my heart is in shatters while looking at the state of my diary.

"Aaaaah....... I really need to think of something.... how to become a convincing female mob who is secretly the all-knowing, powerful character?"

Hmm... I guess it can't be helped. If I can't think of something, I should just ask my good friends.

"That's why, I want your opinion on the matter..."

So I am here sitting on my bed on the following weekend. In front of me is an elf that is slightly shorter than me. She have a slender build and have a light blue hair that is styled into pigtails.

This one is Epsilon. She is the fifth member of the Shadow Garden. Obviously she is the fifth on the Seven Shadows. This elf is seriously amazing at controlling her magic. I think if I didn't learn to control my magic through the restraints of my magic suppressing bracers, she might have beaten me.

By the way, on an unrelated note, I managed to disguise these magic suppressing cuffs into bracers. It's part of my training so I always wear it since I got it. Alpha and the others are surprised when they saw it, saying I got some sort of artifact, though it's not really useful. It's just a training tool after all.

"You want to know how to better blend with your classmates?" With my nod, she smiled. Puffing her nonexistent chest proudly. "If it's Lady Shadow who is asking for it, then this Epsilon will surely share all her knowledge!"

And so I listen to her words. Based on her it seems like girls can naturally mingle with others if they have a topic or hobbies that both are interested in. Basically I should have something that complements the other party's interest.

Hmm.... I see. That sounds reasonable.

Though that was anti-thematic to leaving the main screen. Her words are actually reasonable.

I recall some of the shows I watch on TV. Female mobs usually acts as cheerleaders for the main characters, regardless if they are protagonists or antagonists. They are always there to echo someone's words, or maybe give some useless exposition, or sometimes even there just to gush at how amazing someone is.

"Hmm.... I see." I nodded, then look at her while feeling confused. She is looking at me like she is surprised. "What is it?"

"A-ah... no... forgive my impertinence, but it is rare to see you smile, Milady..." She bowed her head a bit deeper as she says that. Her voice turning into mutter at the latter.

"I see..."

Is it really rare for me to smile? I think I always smile?

I wonder what she is talking about?

Epsilon can't help but feel her heart become warm at the sight of her Master's smile.

It's really rare. Their Master is always looking as if she is in despair. Her eyes are always downcast and she always have that solemn atmosphere surrounding her. It's not a shallow darkness that only worries about her daily life, because her gaze is telling something so deep that they can't read it.

Rarely does she smiles, and if she did it is always so beautiful. So precious that any of them wanted to eternalize it on the world.

They can only imagine the fraction of how much their Master is holding the burden of fighting against the cult. Always looking as if she is always alone, despite all of them being here.

The only times she have seen her smile is when she is curing those who are Possessed. She have the face of contentment everytime she does it. So they can surmise just how kind the girl is.

Since childhood, she have already learned of the deep corruption that seeps onto the whole world. Everything is held by the cult, and no one can help her other than herself. So she took it upon herself to go against this mysterious enemy. Taking the burden of destroying the darkness behind the shadows.

She barely have a childhood they can talk for. Every night she leaves her home just so she can train more. Epsilon have heard how hard she trains as if her life depends on it.

Even with their urging not to push herself, their Master shrugs it off and says that it wasn't enough. It pains them to see that same solemn gaze looking at them. That perpetually gloomy atmosphere that she always have that also have a hint of great resolved within it.

She admires her Master so much at that, though she really hopes to give their Master some respite.

She is still a human after all. She still needs someone to talk to. To socialize with.

So seeing her smile makes her feel so warm. As if she just accomplished a great task. More so than just defeating the cult.

It is unfortunate that the moment is brief as their Master, Arisa returns to her usual solemn expression.

"Thank you for your cooperation, you may leave now."

She says that with the same coldness that she was used to. Which means the time for rest is done.

Epsilon nodded before quickly leaving the premises by jumping away from the windows.

'I swear we will destroy the whole cult, and finally give you the peace you have been looking for!' She thought to herself full of resolve.

This time it shows some other changes from the other characters, mostly by Epsilon.

Epsilon's sole reason why she is even competing against Beta's figure is to take Shadow's attention and acquire his love. Though now that Arisa is a girl in this story, she doesn't have any reason to seduce her at all.

So this is the result. It's all admiration.

Hope you have fun with this story!~♪ See you later!~♪
